Haha do yourself a favor and go somewhere else to spend your money if you're a person of color!! From the moment we went inside, a white female employee followed my group around the entire store. When we stopped and stared at her for following us, another coworker asked her what she thought she was doing and she said she was "looking at inventory" and he told her to get away. We went to check out to buy around 9 bottles (high end if I would say) and they said they didn't accept "vertical licenses" (we come from Texas and we haven't had an issue here at all). Extremely unsatisfied. Went to another local shop that did not disappoint. Please look elsewhere if you're a person of color. read more

This af black butte porter is the single best alcohol free beer I've ever tried, and Guinness 0.0 is always great - fantastic beer selection across the board, they've got all the special hitters like Pliny the elder, black Tuesday, etc. The cons: - whisky selection is limited and expensive. My experience here was honestly amazing here! I moved to Colorado from Portland recently & was looking for a place just like this, with a great selection. I've been all over & recently just discovered Highlands. All of the employees were super helpful & knowledgeable, and were very down to earth when I had some questions. It's in a cool little area over by my gym & I really love that they have 15 minute parking for people who are just in & out quick. It's in a clean area, not riddled with trash & drug addicts & whoever does the buying of products for that store, has great taste. I will be back again soon. read more

My go-to for libelula tequila. If you haven't had libelula then you're trippin. I've yet to find a better tequila for a margarita. It's a higher end tequila but no marg hangover in the morning. Best liquor store I've been to in Denver. Super friendly staff and it is locally owned. Whenever I have gone in there is always someone who asks if I need help finding anything or a recommendation. Sprinkling salt and being done with it when it snows hard isn't good enough; keep up everyday when there is slush/snow melting from roof. it refreezes overnight. Not up to city standards on this. For me, the location is perfect- next to the gym and to Sprouts. I also like how it is laid out inside- very easy to navigate, to find what you want, and it's clean and neat! The beer selection is ridiculous. There are other places I like but this one beats them all hand's down! The staff is super helpful and they always provide me great recommendations. Where I thought this place was lacking was in the wine department. I felt like all the bottles were priced on the higher end but also there was very little guidance (point system or whatever) to guide you to what might be good or bad. In general, I feel like the prices for both beer and wine are a bit higher than other places you go to. For beer, it's a great resource because of the variety but I just didn't really care for the wine dept. read more

This is a great local liquor store. I came in for Christmas presents for my maintenance team at work, i.e. beer. I also picked up a Scrumpy's Apple cider which isn't found everywhere and a Diebolt beer for the hubs. At a quick glance, I found their beer selection to be quite impressive. The customer service was also excellent. I was accidentally overcharged for one of the cases of beer I bought and when I realized it after leaving the store, I went back in and quickly had the issue resolved. Overall, I really liked this store and will most definitely be back. read more

I most def live far from this place...15 mins or so. I'm a Sunflower shopper and was in a rush on Friday. I see this place all the time but get scared. I figured the prices were going to be high. In the time crunch I headed in and found a nice layout and super friendly staff. Prices aren't as cheap as a Costco or a bigger store but totally reasonable. I'll be back! read more

To those who have had the same experience as I have, I know exactly how you feel! I bought a bottle of wine a couple of months ago, opened it about a month later, poured a glass and it was spoiled. I re-corked it and returned it only to be made to feel like a total jerk! First they said I left it uncorked for a month, so of course it would spoil (which I had not and never said anything like that). Then they said the year of the wine was not something they stock... so now you are calling me a liar? Really? The one nice employee recommended something in exchange, but it was a dollar more so they wouldn't honor it. I ended up with a decent bottle an an exact exchange... fine, but geez, I am too busy to waste my time buying and returning wine and then being treated like a second class citizen. I read about the poor level of service at this place, and maybe they did too because when I stopped into Highlands Wine & Liquor, I couldn't turn a corner without a helpful employee asking what he could do for me. I found the service to be very helpful on several levels (on the floor, at the counter). The owner/buyer made some great recommendations and was very nice. When I stop in at a liquor store, I mostly shop for beer and this place didn't disappoint. They have a great selection of local brews as well good choices of Belgians and all the top-notch breweries that any beer snob could want (hello 120 minute IPA). I've found that their pricing could be a bit more competitive, and I was disappointed that they were fresh out of my favorite cab. I still may trek over to Mile High Wine and Spirits for their more competitive prices. read more

I completely stopped shopping here. I was a fan. Shopped here weekly and probably spent around $700/year. What killed it was during the 2014 GABF, they were rolling out new releases. I asked if they had a given beer and was told "not available for sale until 5:00." As in they had it, but weren't going to sell it to me to keep some fake supply constraint in place. That will lose you a customer real fast. So I left there, drove to Small Batch and bought the beer I was looking for with no hassle. Haven't been back since. read more

Seriously the most helpful service I have received at a liquor store. I usually come here after getting my sausage fix at Sprouts. (See my review if you have questions...I know I would after reading that sentence). The people who work here always point me in the right direction. My favorite part of this store is the build your own six-pack option for their beers. If you are feeling adventurous, ask one of the counter guys to pick it for you and put a good selection in there. They are super knowledgeable and will tell you exactly why they are picking the beer they are picking. Their wine selection is ridiculous here and it is really easy to get lost and confused about what kind to get. *Cue the liquor Gandhi's! I love this place and am always exited to stop by. read more

Very friendly staff and a smaller liquor store that doesn't make you feel creeped out. Carts and wide aisles to easliy navigate for bigger purchases. Even though it can't run with the big boys like Argonaut, they have a great selection given the size. I can always find a unique choice for wine and they carry locally distilled stuff like Leopolds. Also a good selection of beer. Not what I'd hope for in my wildest dreams, but more than most. They also have a nice looking collection of single, rare bottles of beer. This place is THE best in Highlands neighborhood. You won't wonder if you'll get shot or asked for spare change like a lot of the other liquor shops along 38th. Alternatively, if you're after some rare precious gem small production wine, no dice here either. This is the place for a $10-15 bottle of wine (although there are many options over/under) or a decent six pack of beers. I dig Full Sail and they carry it, rock! Prices are better than most. They won't beat Argonaut or Applejack, but you're also not going to have to drive 20 minutes to get to those places if you just shop here. Staff is always nice and helpful and willing to talk for a while if you want help or just want to shoot the breeze. Chances are they'll recognize you the 2nd or 3rd time you come in too, and that's cool. read more

I've seen this liquor store many times while shopping at Sprouts and Simpawtico. It doesn't look like anything special from the outside so I was never motivated to go in. Recently, I was complaining to a friend about the lack of seasonal beer options available at the liquor stores in Edgewater. He recommended that I check out Highlands Wine & Liquor. I'm so thankful he did, because this place is awesome! An unexpectedly awesome selection of craft beer. I'm sure the other sections are great as well but I've honestly yet to make it past the beer. Though this place is not nearly as large as Argonaut or Applejack's, it is comparable in the caliber of offerings. And, it's a lot closer to my house so that's certainly a plus as well. They are dog friendly too! I live about 2 miles away so coming here is a great way for me to multi-task and 1) tire out my dog 2) stock up on unique booze. Although walking a hyper 6 month old puppy is not necessarily conducive to carrying multiple 6-packs it's a challenge I'm willing to accept. The prices here are a bit high so if you're strictly looking for more well known/popular brands you can probably save a couple bucks by going to a different liquor store nearby. However, if you're trying to find something more obscure--or just looking to try something new-- this place is definitely worth it. read more

This is a solid solid liquor store. A great selection of beer, decent selection of wine, and reasonable (although not as cheap as you could find if you wanted to drive around town looking) prices. Based on all of these things, this is a solid four star establishment. Where does the fifth star come from? I'm a sucker for consistently friendly and consistently helpful customer service. I have never not been greeted with a smile and conversation, and that goes a long way. AND they're dog friendly! For a guy without kids, the way to my heart is complimenting my dog. I'm a regular here since it's close by and has a great beer selection. The people who work here are knowledgable about their stuff and they will try and order you stuff if you want it. They're incredibly helpful and just one of the reasons this is a regular spot for me. Their fridge beer selection is big. They have a lot more bombers than you would expect and many of the local and not so local breweries. They even have a decent import and cider selection. When I need to pick up beer, this is usually where I go. The liquor selection is a little thin. They do have a selection of higher end scotches and such right next to the counter. You can find what you need but you may not find what you're looking for. They try to keep some odd flavors and diverse brands but they're not a huge store so I don't expect the selection of some of the more popular and larger stores. The wine selection is okay. I can usually find something to grab. I certainly haven't had the experience the other people have who reviewed here but I usually know the wine I'm buying and have had it multiple times. I don't know if the wine prices are higher than usual, I don't really pay attention. The prices on the rest of the store are as expected so I can't complain. They also carry a decent selection of mixers and drink additives like soda, a few brands of ginger beer, and bitters. They also keep a bit of glassware next to the counter. read more

I have recently taken to stopping in at this place while doing my food shopping at Sunflower, as I am on a strict "one car trip a day" diet. I've been pleased with some of the sale wines, and more than once the staff has assisted me with finding the "perfect" wine for my meal that evening. I will even go so far as to say that when a staffer was doubtful that the cheap Zin I was buying would work in my tomato sauce, he was right. Dammit. I hate when that happens. However, what I do not like, in fact DESPISE, is when the guy ringing me up (usually this is weekend staff) asks me "what I'm up to for the weekend" or "what's on tap this weekend", I'm thinking - Dude, I don't even know you, I'm not sharing my plans with you. I've lately taken to making up elaborate stories about festivals, parties and trips, just to feel that I've thrown him off my actual planned activities, lest he appears. The staff here makes this a great place to buy wine. Although I have my favorites around town, this is a nice little gem that is very convenient to stop at after working out at the nearby 24 Hour or getting my groceries at Sunflower. I have had some amazing bottles of Malbec and Spanish Reds recommended to me by the staff. As another Yelper said, they do not follow you around annoyingly, but they know their shiz-nit and are more than happy to help when you ask. It does feel a bit sterile, but it gets the job done and I know that I can always get an amazing Malbec for a great price at Highlands Wine & Liquor. I have to knock off a star, and I'm somewhat tempted to knock off two stars. Therefore, I'll settle on 3.5 stars. The prices on wine here are pretty good. However, the beer prices are some of the most expensive I've ever seen (and that includes Hollywood Blvd. in LA). For instance, a 12-pack of Pacifico beer (which is usually $12-14 at most other places) is....$17.50 here. Yes, you read that correctly. It's like...come on. It's Mexican beer. It's not exactly Harp or Hoegaarden. That price is INSANE and borderline highway robbery. Many other beers there are on or close to that price point. This is not OK, and it's almost kind of comical. Attention Highlands Wine & Liquor: you have GOT to lower your beer prices and make them more reasonable overall. read more

I found this liquor store by being a Sunflower shopper as well. The staff and layout are friendly and easy to navigate :-) What struck me, and what keeps me coming back is there selection of liquors I want. They carry the entire line of spirits and liqueurs by Leopold Brothers, a local Denver distillery. It's not rare to find a shop carrying one or two, but they have all seven Liqueurs, gin, several whiskeys and they even carry their Absinthe. Without checking for absolute accuracy, they carry all of their products. These aren't nationally marketed or as well known as other choices, but they are superior. It's rare to find a liquor store striving for quality rather than profit. Their selection of absinthe is small, carrying only Leopold's and Lucid. I might, without knowing better, count this against them but the selections of absinthe in other shops are those two and also the crapsinthe. These two are the ONLY decent absinthe offerings you can find without ordering online.
