This is an outstanding local operation run by a family---father Dan (who is scaling back), son Joshua, and daughter Hana. The owners are willing and eager to educate you fairly about their products. For example, there are wine tastings on Thursdays and Fridays, and they will explain the relative merits of products---not only or primarily the expensive ones, but what might be the best value for you. We go here a lot. It's our go to liquor store. And it's not about the location! Cause we have liquor stores closer to us. We live near Belmar. The owner and the help here are 1000% more helpful than any place I've ever been! Josh help me out today! When it comes to wine, he knows what he's talking about! We bought a half case, which in this case was really only six bottles. Cause that's the way it came. The corks on every bottle was dry. A little too dry for my wife. So every bottle was a pain to open. I took back three bottles to show him what the issue was. He took our three bottles back and gave us a full case. Meaning six new bottles. He also introduced me to a tool which I had no idea about. And I have bartended for 17 years. Including a country club and a wedding facility. He is by far one of the most knowledgeable people I have met when it comes to wine, who is not a sommelier. I'm pretty sure he's probably studying for it! Thank you, Josh! This little place is a local treasure that you'd probably easily overlook as you cruise down West Colfax, but they're really worth a visit. No matter whether you're looking for beer, cider, wine, whisky or whiskey, these guys probably have what you're looking for in stock. Situated at the corner of Oak and Colfax across from the Shell station, you'd probably think that it's just another one of the many average liquor stores that dot the local landscape, but you'd be wrong. From the moment you walk in, you'll see that the place seems almost bigger on the inside than you'd expect. Aisles of wine, an entire wall of beer coolers, shelves of hard liquor and a generous selection of styles in every type of libation they offer set them apart from other small- to mid-size liquor stores. Sure, they're not Argonaut, Bubbles or Applejack, but you don't need to dial a different area code to reach the back of the store so that's a nice trade-off. They really have a stellar selection tucked away in the corners, as well. Any time I'm looking for some beer for a party, some ingredients for mixers or even just a nice bottle of Irish whiskey for a gift, I've never been left wanting at Philnor. I can name a few more "specialty" things that I need to make a special trip to one of the big stores to pick up, but outside of those few times a year I've always been able to find what I want in a much more convenient place. Its confusing, but the mask mandate ended Mar. 6, according the States website. So, I was shopping here without a mask, they didn't want me to shop without one, and they offer a free pickup. The only problem is, you have to know what's in stock, what's on sale, and what you want? I did not, so the employee that confronted me, helped me find the answers and completed the sale quickly! This is how you do it, just make the sale, and move them along, happy. Instead of refusing service, and creating a negative experience. If I know what I want, I'll be happy to use their pick up service, and I'm glad they didn't discriminate me, but like I said the mandate is over! read more

I've shopped at liquor superstores Applejack in Golden/Lakewood and Argonaut in Denver, and they are great for selection and environment, but Philnor beats them for price and customer service. Philnor also packs a surprisingly huge inventory into a smaller space than the aforementioned liquor giants. You will get great service. Often, it's the minute you walk in, but definitely the moment you start browsing or looking vaguely indecisive. The staff is uniformly helpful and pleasant, and the store always has enough cash registers open to meet the demand of busy times like Friday nights or days before holidays. The store offers tastings, usually wine and usually during Friday afer-work hours as I recall, and you can find some bargain gems then. The owner Dan runs the tastings and explains the selections, and they are often great-value, sale-priced wines. My go-to liquor/wine store. I'd have to need some remarkably limited and rare item to shop anywhere else. And if I needed that rare item, I'd check with Philnor first, because Dan would do all he could to help get it for you. read more

What isn't there to say about Philnor?! Cheap prices for the same liquor you get anywhere else. Excellent selection, and awesome staff. I'm a vodka girl myself, and this LQ has any flair of vodka you could want/imagine. Whenever I am on this side of town, or having a party at my place, I'm sure to hit up Philnor. What a name... can never remember the name of this place but I've been here twice in the last two years to stock up on supplies for a few days in the mountains. This year our destination was Aspen so we stocked up appropriately.... half a case of white (most Cupcake Chardonnay), a handle of vodka (which we polished before we arrived to Aspen), a handle of pre-made Margarita beverage (I do not recall even tasting) and I selected a bottle of Centenario Reposado Tequila, the biggest bottle of Crown Royal Reserve that you could buy, Bison Grass Vodka (personal size)... Awesome selection of beers, wines and liquor and friendly service. The lady behind the counter told me she remembered my face and I hadn't been there in a year! One day, as I was leaving work I realized I was on my way to a birthday party and I didn't have any booze! What kind of friend would I be if I didn't offer my friend a bottle of fabulous wine on the anniversary of her birth?! Luckily, Philnor Liquors is merely two blocks from my job. I've driven past it hundreds of times, but never actually stopped in, mainly because I live 2 blocks from Argonaut in Cap Hill. I pulled in and was immediately stunned to see that the lot was nearly full. I barely got the last parking space. Shortly after I walked in, I recognized a friendly face. It was one of my co-workers who was there for a Friday afternoon wine tasting. Seriously... a wine tasting in the middle of the store at 5pm on Friday. How sweet is that? He stepped away from his tasting and gave me a tour of the place and pointed out a few of his favorite wines. He's definitely a regular, and definitely a guy who knows how much his favorite wines cost at Philnor as well as every other major liquor store in town. I was surprised at how cheap the bottles were! Beer seemed to be priced about the same, but some of the wines I regularly bought were $3-5 cheaper by the bottle. Who knew? Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The staff seemed to know most of the clientele as there were lots of personal conversations about family and people asking about each other's children at the check out counter. Don't get me wrong. I love Argonaut, and it will always have a special place in my heart. But Philnor's is really giving them a run for their money. If there is one retail experience I have more than any other, it is a trip to the liquor store (note to self-have an intervention). Small ones, Ginormous ones, ones with discounts after check ins, ones with discounts after building up "points", so many. I have a few favorites when it comes to wine selection, other favorites when it comes to beer selections, and yet others when it comes to liquors..This one has taken them all over. This little gem somehow pulls off the best prices, literally across the board, be it wine, liquor, or beer, and not just cheap brands, but mad steep discounts on mid and top shelf brands, like say $8 off a fifth of Patron, bringing it down to $17? How about some Stoli flavored Vodkas for $13-14 a fifth? How about a 12 pack of Goose Island IPA for $12? Is that a 6 year old Argentinian Malbec for $10? Why yes it is... These don't seem to be one offs, the sales tend to go on for some time, and they include a wide variety of beers, wines, or liquors. This is by far the most cost effective means to booze up your next party. read more

From the outside I always thought this place was sketchy and weird. Wrong. Philnor's has a surprisingly large selection of wine and hards along with a very attentive staff that seems ever willing to help you with your order or provide a thoughtful recommendation. Dan has created one hell of a store here - and while the store is stocked with everything you need at very reasonable prices, the big story here is wine. Dan is a huge wine afficianado, and it shows. He has a great collection and I've always suspected he stocks it with what HE likes. Somehow, in many cases with wine, he undercuts the bigger stores (rhymes with Shmappledacks) by using his business savvy and the ample space in the basement. He works the vendors for great deals, and many of those are seen on his Thursday and Friday wine tasting from 4-7. He also gets wines that are rare and that you can't get anywhere else. My friends and I have already started cellaring simply because we've tried some amazing wines we've decided we can't live without - and he'll have you try something like a 95-point wine at half off. I don't understand it, but you won't see me complain! My love of wine has expanded SO much - I never tried a Zinfandel I liked until he poured one and insisted I try it. He's good like that. Oh, and he also catered my wedding and helped me make amazing choices. Can't forget that one. Dan is so friendly. He explains the wines (over and over...) as people drop in after work and sample, and he drinks right there with you (nice job!). If you're interested, he often knows the producer's story, or why the wine is special - he also has formal sommelier training. Best part? He makes great recommendations. I've walked in and said "Dan! I'm making coffee-braised beef ribs and need something to pair and want it under $10." Done. And once he knows you and your taste, he always has great recommendations for you and has always been spot-on. You ROCK Dan! Philnor is a small neighborhood liquor store with big box liquor store prices. My favorite bottle of Gewurztraminer is always $1-$3 cheaper here than anywhere else I go. I would say some of their prices even rival Apple Jack, but without the utterly confusing store lay out. Despite the size, the variety is plenty. And I believe they have wine tastings on Friday night as well (yummy). The staff is always very knowledgeable and can make some good suggestions if your stumped on what to get. The only negative I could say is that parking lot is kinda cramped and this place can get pretty busy on a Friday night, so be forewarned. read more

Yes! Finally a liquor store that is open until reasonable party hours! Lol. This store has an extremely wide selection of beer, and an equally comparable amount of wine and spirits. I was browsing the beer for a bit, and one of the associates came to make sure I was finding everything ok. Kind of rare for a liquor store nowadays. He accurately assessed my beer tastes, and helped me choose a beer I really ended up liking. Talk about a hidden gem! I am thoroughly impressed, and it is very difficult for a liquor store to impress me. I expect a lot... from great customer service, to an impressive inventory, to being fair on prices, especially for hard to find or allocated items. Few liquor stores around the country meet my criteria. Philnor does. In a recent trip to Denver, I stumbled upon Philnor. I go into a lot of liquor stores. I'm a whiskey hunter. Every Mom and Pop I visit I am looking for something special. 99% of the time I am disappointed. Not this time. Philnor had a few bottles of allocated whiskeys. That, in and upon itself, is unusual. Philnor had these at low suggested retail pricing. That's even more rare than finding the allocated bottle. The staff was very friendly, and didn't treat my questions as some sort of interruption to their day. They were genuinely happy and interested to assist me. That's sometimes an even harder quality to find. I wish I lived in the area so I could be a regular. Unfortunately, I'm only in town once or twice a year. Philnor really is as good as the rest of the reviews state. I have only shopped for craft beer in this place so can't speak for the wine or liquor they offer. Their selection of craft beer bombers are pretty extensive and I have found some hidden gems that are coveted by craft beer geeks. They have a.... good-to-ok selection of 4- and 6-packs of craft beer. I know shelf space has become hard to come by as more and more breweries enter the scene, but I feel like there are some staples that should stay on the shelf while others should go. One thing that stands out as unique is they have an extensive selection single 12-oz bottles of beer for sale for people to test. I love this concept as I always want to try new beer releases, but before Philnor I had to pick up a whole 4- or 6-pack to try one. Their prices are reasonable, they don't seem to be much different from other liquor stores. I'd be happy to give this place 5 stars if they made more shelf space for craft beer. read more

First off let me quote, "Don't judge a book by its cover." This liquor store is a hidden treasure. From the outside it looks like any other Colfax liquor store. When you walk in it looks like any other Colfax liquor store. However, if you know good wine, liquor, and beer, you will see that this is more then your Colfax liquor store. To be honest I go to Dan's FREE tasting every week, and honestly feel that I should be in an establishment that requires a suit and tie to enter. The selection that Dan brings into his store is truly some of the hardest and rarest items to find. His selection of wine, beer, and Scotch is the greatest I have ever seen in a single location. He knows what he is looking for, and brings it in. Also the pricing of his store is astonishing. Dan has found the algorithm to buy liquor in the correct way so that he can price it for most to enjoy. I will say when I can find a $100.00 bottle of wine that Dan is selling for $60.00 is something that some don't truly understand. As well as his Scotch and Whiskey selection. I am glad we opened our business across the street, and can reap the benefits of this store on a daily basis. I truly can't find a better place. read more

In May of 2016, my boyfriend and I visited Denver from Ohio, and Philnor's was recommended to us by a server at a local restaurant. We were pleased to find a large selection of alcohol of all varieties--particularly whisky and craft beer. My boyfriend was looking for high-end bourbon, and I was in search of Dogfish Head's 120 minute IPA. We were not let down as we both found what we were looking for. The owner was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and we left knowing we'd have to return on our next trip to Denver. Today we visited again and were certainly treated by David as he presented a special, rare bottle of bourbon that we've been searching everywhere for.
