Recently, I had the pleasure of dining at 'Highly Flavored' Restaurant in Calumet City. I want to post my review on the food and service I received. Upon entering the establishment I was greeted with a friendly and welcoming hello by the lady working the register. She was very pleasant. I informed her that this was my first time visiting. She said again welcome and I hope you will visit again. The menu is extensive with the business being a small restaurant with limited seating. There was so much to choose from, it was very hard for me to decide. I settled on the catfish combo with shrimp, it came with fries & garlic bread. I asked if it would be okay for me to dine in, her reply was absolutely. I placed order that included a carry out of 12 children wings for my family. Of course, on my ride home I had to try one of them wings that had my car smelling good. The wings tasted like I made them myself; seasoned well and cooked to perfection. I nearly forgot to mention that I also ordered their South Shore egg rolls to go. I didn't eat them until later that evening for dinner; they were delicious. I am certain they were a lot more crispy when I received my order. However, I had a very long drive home in heavy Chicago traffic. The next time I order them, I will eat them upon receipt. Upon receiving my 'eat in' order it was piping hot, fresh and delicious. The catfish was real catfish not Swai fish that is now being pushed off at some local restaurants as catfish. This fish was crispy on the outside and thick and flaky on the inside. There isn't anything bad that I can say about my experience I had at this location. When I arrived at the restaurant there was only one person ahead of me and they were picking up a 'door dash' order. After I placed my order the door never stopped opening. Several customers were coming in to either place an order, pick up a call in order or picking up a 'door dash' order. One customer asked the clerk if she was the one preparing the grits and the clerk responded yes! As the customer left the restaurant she said 'you are going to have to share that recipe with me; those grits are really good'! In my mind, I said well now I have to come back for the Shrimp and Grits! If you are in the mood for some good home cooked food stop by 'Highly Flavored' Restaurant, you will not be disappointed. The young lady who takes your order, is friendly, thoughtful and runs the place like a well oiled machine . Everything we ordered was outstanding from the chicken wings, to the catfish with macaroni and cheese to the fried rice with chicken. Also, they have a sweet and savory sauce that they make in house that was absolutely delicious and it made the fish even more craveable. I was told we won't make your order until you arrive and pay. I was so confused as I'd already paid for an order I certainly was coming to get, but this is the managers edict for his black owned business. Mr. Manager, not all people are the same, don't burden everyone with policies who have had no negative impact on your food costs, I'd rather you just charge more to cover waste. Value my time please. Place exceeded my expectations. Cons are the price & the jerk chicken rolls having both zero jerk flavor & aside from the accompanying cheese having any flavor at all. When coupled with the sauces they're much better but honestly they fail in comparison to the rice & lemon pepper shrimp. It's also worth mentioning that the fries are prosaic also. With those tidbits aside this rice was amazing. Extremely similar to the rice found at hibachi restaurants but with tons more flavors. You'd be hard pressed to find a better rice dish in all of Chicago tbh. The lemon pepper shrimp were also a welcome surprise. Other establishments should take notes to what exactly lemon pepper should be because this is it. I'm writing this review because I love to support Black owned businesses whenever I can, and hope that leaving reviews helps to address customers concerns and helps to make the establishment a better and more successful business. With that being said, today was my first time trying this restaurant as I have heard so many good things about it and I was very excited to try them out. I ordered the Hot honey Chicken sandwich. So first, the menu does not indicate that the sandwich comes with onions on the online menu or in store, and had it said that I would have firmly asked for NO onions. I don't like the smell, much less the taste of onions. However, upon receiving my order it had a large amount of onions on the sandwich. I was too far to turn around, so I just picked them off, but the presence of them alone already altered the taste of the sandwich for me. The reviews I have read in the past states that food is made to order so expect a wait time around 25-30 mins, which I'm all for because I love that restaurants serve you your food fresh. My order took 11 minutes, so I don't know if that meant my food was not made to order, or if what I specifically ordered just doesn't take as long. That I'm a little unsure about. With that I will say, the food was not cold, but it was not hot either. Also, I personally am not a "spicy" girlie so I love to have another flavor to help balance out the heat. With that being said, the sandwich was EXTREMELY sweet. No "hot" to the "hot honey" at all. I would describe the sauce as having a sweet syrup like consistency. By the time I was able to start eating the sandwich, the sauce had completely drenched the bottom bun making it soggy and basically fell apart when trying to eat it. The chicken itself was seasoned well, but that all got lost by the amount of sauce that it was covered in. I will say, the pickles are what made the sandwich. They really help to break up some of the sweetness from the sauce, with a nice crunch. Now as far as customer service, I have zero complaints. The staff was very nice and efficient. They were not rude at all, and very helpful. I wish the efficiency in the customer matched what I was served today. All in all, I do appreciate the business, and like the variety on the menu and the fact they sell brunch items during all business hours. I would like to give this place another visit in the future, but I hope that I have a much better experience when it comes to the quality of the food. read more

One Smash burger was dressed as requested with no bacon, yet the other was dressed with red onion. As a restaurant, it's important to adhere to food allergies and requests to omit certain components/condiments due to dietary restrictions. Upon pickup, I verbally verified with the manager that the order was prepared as requested and he specifically said, if not, provide a Google review. Moreover, I didn't think I needed to remove the bun and inspect. So I go into this place for the first time Saturday August 3rd around 1:30 and had a horrible experience.... I ordered the buffalo schrimp sliders along with the tacos..
