INCREDIBLE baked goods! Stopped by with my dad and husband and we tried several things, all were delicious! The stars of the day were the Almond Croissant and the Key Lime tart. This morning, before we headed to Valles Caldera National Preserve, we went into town for breakfast at the Highway 4 Cafe and Bakery. My wife had French Toast with eggs and bacon and I had the quesadilla with eggs, cheese and elk sausage. The quesadilla was outstanding. Everything else was very good also. This was a definitely a surprise adventure. After yelping and finding out this place was finally open by driving by we popped in. Small town , small businesses, weird hours , flexible days which is all very understandable. After eating breakfast here I was kind of sad that cafe wasn't open the other days that I was visiting. The food was just soooo good and everything ate like each ingredient was fresh ingredients. Bread that probably arrived that day still warm from the oven. Eggs just plucked from the chickens butt and so on. The fact that my travel partner who eats like a bird and always has left overs for me to sample or have top off the belly had nothing but crumbs left on the plate also says a lot about this place. Now I think about it I usually offer them a bite but I think I just kept my meal to myself also. I can't wait till I wander through this area again so I can sample more of the menu. read more

Got a smothered xmas Jemez burrito which is basically a breakfast burrito with a bunch of different meats. It was fine but a bit too salty and the salsas were a little watery and uneven. We had the Jemez burrito - smothered in Christmas. $13. It has Elk sausage, bacon, smoked carne adovada, eggs and potatoes. Mostly meat! The spice level of the carne adovada mixed with the red and green chili we're worth the drive to Jemez Springs. The staff were super friendly and helpful and made our day. Nearly nothing in the cases, no muffins at all. ALL the so-called bakery items were days and days old. What was there had been refrigerated so long it was soaked in condensation. Slathered with gobs of colored sugary frosting. The donut was actually rock hard and bone dry. When I returned it the waitress just grabbed it out of my hand and threw it over the counter at the trash bin. I cleaned it up. Exceptionally rude. The burrito had reheated fried potatoes, dry and tasteless and overcooked scrambled eggs. The green chile looked like water with a few pieces in it. Clearly, these are people who know nothing about baking, fresh, good food or hospitality.... But they think that they can run a restaurant. So wrong. read more

Absolutely worth the visit - pancake plate could feed 2 people! Huevos rancheros with green chilie were tasty. The frijoles were the best we've found in New Mexico, so far. Burrito good for a casual breakfast time - chilie borrowed from other dishes added the heat we looked for. All of our orders were correct (a complaint noted in other reviews), with friendly service. They have a wonderful New Mexican specialty- piñon tarts! They are amazing and anytime driving through Jemez, it is an absolute must to drop by and take one home for each member of the family. I always forget to snap a pic because it's such a treat but will update later. read more

I used to come here alot and was excited to bring some friends. Ordered a double latte. $13.00!!!! I clarified with the batista that I had ordered a 16oz with a double shot. He said yes, ($6. And some change) PER SHOT!). Even in Manhatten I've never even paid close to that! Was wishing for the first time ever a Starbucks was around. Got a single but they put it in a 16oz cup so it was basically frothed milk with a hint of coffee coloring. My friends were happy with their drip coffee. read more

This cafe was walking distance to my airbnb and my host recommended it. It's closed Mon, Tues, & Wed. Only open Thurs-Sun. I visited twice. Pastries: This is why you come to this cafe! The cheesecake & Pinon tart were sooo yummy. Both were $6.50/each. So delicious though and worth the price. Just get 'em. You won't regret it. Lunch: Meh. Ordered a roast beef "sub" & a regular drip coffee. The "sub" was just a sandwich between 2 slices of bread. Pretty mediocre & cost like $12.99 (also came with frozen fries). I ate half the sandwich on the patio & took the other half home. I ate it the next day after adding pimento cheese to give it a little more substance. The coffee was $3.99 for maybe a 10 ounce cup. Great place for breakfast. My wife and I went hiking in the area on a Sunday. We stopped in for breakfast. The breakfast burritos were fantastic. My only complaint was the coffee situation. They run out quickly. They brew the coffee in carafes that pump. Five cups and it's empty. Overall, we would definitely recommend this place! read more

With impending tasks for the holidays, I'd neglected to write up a quick review of this place but with a few moments to spare I wanted to let you all know not to pass up Highway 4 Cafe and Bakery. We love Jemez Springs but generally, the food is just meh! We were on our annual tree-finding trip into the forest and had gotten there just prior to lunchtime. My husband loves chai lattes but often doesn't get them because so many places use a sweetened mix. Needless to say I was so very pleased when our server said with a modest smile "I make my own here", that I ordered lunch along with the drinks we had planned on taking to go. I ordered the spinach and mushroom quesadilla for myself and the veggie burger with green for my husband. Lunch was Nom! Nom! Nom! and the salsa and service, outstanding! Didn't open right at 8 which sucked cause I was freezing my buns off. Once I got inside I ordered the Redondo plate. Which was awesome I suggest getting your egg over medium with a side of beans with cheese and green chile. I ordered a butter croissant and then went to there condiment station and drizzled some honey over it and dusted it with a bit of cinnamon and nutmeg. This made the perfect end to my meal. read more

At my nephew's insistence we stopped in here after a soak at the springs and a burger at Los Ojos (highly recommend both of those. This is the best enchiladas I have had in seriously my entire life! Sooo good! There's a big case full of pastries and the hazelnut cream puff is a little bit of Heaven! Do you like great coffee? Do you enjoy friendly service? Do you like ridiculously tasty bakery goods, made about 20ft from the counter they sit in? Then I'd say you should stop here...a lot. Not only is the coffee solid (as good or better than any shop in Abq), but the bakery stuff is what I could retire on (and presumably become quite fat on). Even tried a choc chip cookie that was not shabby at all, especially for only $1.50~ Finally, it's not just a coffee shop, but they have a full kitchen which pumps out some crazy good breakfast burritos, with REAL chile (really, this is new mexico, why doesn't every place use real chile....thank God Hwy 4 Cafe does!!!). Tasty but won't leave your mouth on fire...kinda like the goldilocks of breakfast burritos you could say. Oh, and for those technogeeks who can't be separated from their beloved devices, they have free wifi.....yes, you WILL have to leave the cafe at some point and go enjoy the mtns, but for the time being you may enjoy your coffee, wifi, & burrito. read more

Sadly I ordered the bacon breakfast burrito with extra green chili. I apologize. I did not care for it. The cook came out yelling at the top of her lungs. To never come back again. My mom liked the quiche. Her husband liked the Elk breakfast burrito,and my wife liked some kinda spinach egg thing all wrapped up in fello. That burrito wasn't right. I took it to the counter and told the young lady there I wish I could say it was good but I couldn't because one strip of bacon nestled in microwave eggs and defrosted potatoes. I ordered chilies inside and smothered on the outside. Extra. A very pinche laddel on the outside. Just not fresh and wrapped up and microwaved inside a store bought tortilla. We were not hostile. Stopped in here on our way down from sledding for coffee and snacks. We just had amazing pizza up the road. We came in, unknowing, 10 minutes before closing. So our course every one was upset. Which I don't understand. Why not close at 3:50pm if your upset about customers coming in 10 minutes before. We spent about $70 in their over priced baked goods and drinks. Ice chai tea which had no ice cause ice machine was out. Two milk shakes which we ordered chocolate came out vanilla. Then we ordered three cheesecakes, eclair and key lime. This is the worst part the cheesecake and key lime tasted like straight up mold. None was present but tasted like it was left in fridge with something moldy and took on that taste. I've been here before and it was pretty decent. Not sure if new owners or what. I'm sure this review won't affect them since they are the only coffee shop in town but I'd recommend you just keep going on to Albuquerque. Bad service bad food read more

Not sure why they are in Native country when they don't know how to serve the surrounding Native communities. Not very friendly (maybe because I'm Local and brown). Food is not freshley made. They need a McDonald's instead of these small shops, at least you know how you will get treated. And can serve yourself. read more

Come here for good food and terrible service. You say bacon, they give you sausage. You say red, they give you green. You say put the sauce in the burrito, you will get smothered. Expect them to not listen to anything you ask. The input your order on their IPad, so either they do not know how input the food orders correctly or just do not care. Yet the food is decent. Would I eat here again? If I got a pastry that did not require any prep and maybe a coffee. They have some New Mexican fare here that is worth trying for the price. Otherwise, it might be worth attempting to visit on one of their "good" days. read more

This place is very hit or miss. Sometimes the timing is okay, other times it takes 1,5 hour to get your food... and it's wrong. It's a small town, and only breakfast place, so you don't have much choice. 15 year olds are the cooks and don't have much care for the decency of accuracy or presentat of your food. Green chilie sauce came out watery, and made our burritos completely soggy. Was shocked they served it. Cashier was kind and eager to help us, but doesn't do much if back of house has no urgency to get food out. read more

Great place to eat! Love their food. It's a place to feel comfortable and get a delicious bite.

"The way this place right here works is, you pay first," said the generally jovial, tatted, disconnected counter person. She continued. "Some people come here and order, and then they go to sit down and so I have to tell them, you know, that they should pay first." Call this passive aggression or, more likely, just being indirectly direct, this was especially funny because we had, in fact, ordered and then went to sit down. So in a roundabout way she was saying that we were Some People. Note to management: she's great. This isn't a knock on her, per se. But I will note that when we entered, nobody said hello. We wandered around a bit before finding menus and a table, and still didn't get greeted, unless you consider the Some People bit a warm welcome. This is one of those places where it's genuinely tough to justify adding a tip. The coffee is self serve, with a note that says "one refill only". The food is delivered, but you gotta grab your own silverware and napkins. The napkins are noteworthy, too: there's another message on the dispenser that says "please only take one", and hey, why would you ever do otherwise? They have the absorbency of a doily (that's really generous, honestly). Food was generally good, but here's a note: don't place more than one order for waffles. They clearly have just one iron, meaning your waffles will emerge from the kitchen one-at-a-time. But they're worthy. My omelet was very good, I got an elk sausage/spinach/mushroom/Monterey jack composition, very nice, and I absolutely recommend the sausage. Not really anything healthy on the menu, BTW. The place felt way understaffed but then, good help can be hard to find in Jemez Springs. Final ironic note: as we were standing to leave, the girl at the counter started bussing the dishes (ah, that's why you should tip) and I noted that the tattoo on her arm said "In God's hands."
