If I could give it a zero or a negative star, I would. I'm sad, because this used to be a reliable place to go. Not last night. It was an average Saturday night and we were on our way home, so we stopped. There were two waitstaff for the entire diner side. (The main dining room was being used by a party). So, in total, there were about 15 tables for 2 waitstaff. I should have known something was off at the beginning, when our waitress started off by telling us how she hadn't been able to eat herself, while taking our order. The whole time she complained about how she was slammed. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak with a salad, veg, mashed potatoes and gravy. His came out sans salad and completely cold. I ordered a grilled cheese with chips. I think that sandwich saw the flattop for a max of 10 seconds. The cheese hadn't melted and was still cold from the walkin. AND ALL OF THIS TOOK 35 minutes for our meal to arrive from order to delivery. And, as a bonus, the light was out in the ladies room and I almost knocked myself out, going into the stall. (The light, I learned later was outside the ladies restroom). It was absolutely miserable and we will be eating elsewhere when we go to Vegas. read more

Classic diner that opened in 1949. Solid food and excellent service. I was welcomed when I entered. Amarette D was my server. I got a fresh iced tea with a lemon slice. Each entree includes a side salad. Crisp lettuce. I had wanted chicken fried steak but they ran out My 2nd choice was the Salisbury steak with brown gravy. It came with a baked potato, green beans and a dinner roll. An actual steak, not ground beef. For dessert, I got a very fresh hot apple pie with golden vanilla ice cream for no extra charge. Nice homey atmosphere with padded booths and wood tables. No music. Lots of memorabilia. They have the original juke boxes from the 1950's. They have a separate dining room in the back called The Flamingo for weddings & other special events. They a full bar next door called the Full Moon Saloon. On our drive to Taos, we stopped here as a recommendation from other family members. I'm not sure how old the establishment is but it's giving traditional dinner vibes from the 1930s. The fish was fried to perfection! The breading was so crispy and tasty-fish was moist. Service was great, very attentive and on top of it. They have seating in the front and back of the restaurant. I'm always leery of ordering steaks of any kind in restaurants, but thought I'd give it a go. The steak was done medium like I ordered. It was breakfast time so I'm assuming it was a small sirloin. Once in a while I'll have some Worcestershire sauce with my steak. Was that ever a mistake. It was French's not Lea & Perrins. OMG what a horrible flavor. Then at my own expense/fault it didn't have a slow pour spout like Lea & Perrins so I totally ruined my steak, hash browns and partial eggs. Most of the other food is okay, but the Chicken Fried steak is horrible. Every restaurant in the world seems to have nothing but frinkin bought frozen and they all suck. The taco was very greasy and had a few crumbs of ground beef in it. The chili relleno was deep fried to a crisp in really old oil. The chicken enchilada was greasy and tasteless. We became invisible..no water, no coffee. After waiting quite a while I noticed a full coffee pot on a side burner in the dining room. I found this place listed on Yelp so I thought it might be a non fast food option for lunch as I passed by Las Vegas. The people working there were very friendly and seemed to enjoy their jobs. The customer service was good and the place had a laid back comfortable feel to it. I ordered the hot turkey sandwich covered with mashed potatoes and gravy. Only about 2/3 of the turkey was edible because the dry, overcooked parts were like cardboard. The mashed potatoes were lumpy and very dry. The gravy was good but it couldn't overcome what was lacking with the turkey and mashed potatoes. The prices were fair and the service was good thus the 2 stars but the food was not worthy of a star. read more

I absolutely love eating here at this restaurant! The staff is friendly and the food is great. The food here reminds me of my grandmas cooking when I was a kid. We pushed our drive from Phoenix just a little too long and ended up in Las Vegas just as most restaurants were closing. We actually hadn't made plans to stop but we were hungry and needed gas so while fueling up we saw the Hillcrest Restaurant next door. A quick check with Yelp showed they would be closing in 15 minutes but their ratings were high so we decided to take a chance. For the previous couple of hours I had a taste for a hot beef sandwich and this looked like a place I might be able to find my craving. It was beginning to rain and the last things we wanted was to be driving around town looking for food. When we walked in the manager told us they had absolutely no problem with serving us. While their posted closing time is 8:30 PM she said they would be there cleaning up and we didn't have to rush. I don't usually like to walk in just before closing but the staff was so nice about it we opted to stay. And it's a good thing we did. My good fortune is that they do have hot beef sandwiches on their menu and that's what I ordered. Well their description of the menu item doesn't do it justice, just "roast beef/brown gravy". What you get in 99% of restaurants that serve this item is usually lunch meat on a slice of Wonder bread with canned gravy and a scoop of mashed potatoes out of a 33 gallon food service barrel. No, not even close! At Hillcrest they serve REAL roast beef and REAL from-scratch mashed potatoes covered in REAL homemade gravy. This is simply the best hot beef sandwich I've ever had. Despite their cleanup chores, they were attentive and took good care of us. Other things to know is that their restaurant manages to have a charming country look to it without being silly like some modern theme restaurants. The people who work here a genuinely nice and the food is outstanding, while still being at the lowest end of the price scale. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW Check out their website for more info about them priding themselves on using only fresh ingredients. The place has been around since 1949 so they must be doing something right. They have a surprisingly comprehensive menu and now that I've eaten there I want to go back and try at least a dozen other things. It's getting harder to find places this authentic anymore.
