We stayed at Austin's Chuckwagon Motel for a night while exploring Capitol Reef in one of the…read moreretro-Queen rooms above the store. This is a room that isn't advertised in 3rd party sites and has to be booked on the property website only - it's something like 50% cheaper than the rooms in the hotel. The room comes with unlimited tea, coffee, and hot chocolate from the General Store/Cafe. We were a bit confused with how it worked since other customers have to pay for drinks, but the clerk assured us we could go whenever to get drinks (which we did multiple times!) While we checked in too late in the day to eat at the deli and left too early in the morning for Chuckwagon's famous lunch boxes, we did hit it up in the morning for breakfast pastries, which according to the cashier are all baked in house (and why we were attracted to them in the first place). We were having trouble deciding between the Kouign Amann and the Chocolate Croissant, eventually deciding on the former, but the cashier tossed us the latter for free! What great service! Chocolate Croissant (Complementary, normally $6) - This is a gorgeous looking croissant, golden brown with a drizzle of sweet chocolate on top, still soft and gooey thanks to being fresh from the oven. It's baked hard, so croissant shards fly everywhere while eating. I'd say it's baked a tad too long, so while extremely flaky, the interior isn't quite as chewy as I'd like. The lamination does look quite good from what I can tell after having some difficulty slicing through with a plastic knife. As is traditional, two chocolate batons are baked inside. (5/5) Kouign Amann w/ Cream ($6) - Again, this pastry has a really hard bake, so almost the entire thing shatters easily, except for the stellar caramelized sugar layer covering the bottom. It's hardened, sticky, and sweet with a great crunch factor. The interior is actually correct for a Kouign Amann, which is really surprising for a small-town bakery. It's not laminated nearly as much as the croissant, and instead seems to be a nice enriched brioche interior, albeit not particularly airy and soft in texture due to the bake. There's a really tangy and somewhat sweet cream cheese frosting that's piped into the center. I'd actually prefer the pastry without this extra flourish, but beggars can't be choosers! (5/5) Both pastries are more of a 4.5/5 due to the bake, but the ingredients and technique (other than bake) seem to be well thought out. We were not expecting much from these baked goods given that the Chuckwagon Deli isn't exactly a specialty bakery, but in the end we were extremely surprised by the quality. I'll definitely be revisiting if I'm ever in town again.

The first night I ordered a flight of five flavors, and the second visit I came back for a flight of three because there were certain flavors I could not stop thinking about afterward. The standout favorites for me were definitely the berries and rosemary and the juniper berry. Both were unique, fresh, and surprisingly balanced. The rosemary added this subtle herbal note that somehow worked beautifully, and the juniper berry flavor was just fun and different in the best way. I also tried butter pecan, lemon coffee seed, chocolate, and later the smoky coffee flavor. The chocolate was especially good because it was creamy without being overwhelmingly sweet or overly intense, which we actually appreciated a lot. Sometimes chocolate ice cream tastes like someone melted an entire candy store into a bucket, but this one stayed smooth and balanced. My husband had butter pecan the first night and Strawberries & Vanilla the second time and really enjoyed it too. The atmosphere of the place is another big part of the charm. Warm, welcoming, nicely decorated, and very lively in the evenings. The owner was there during our visits, and everyone was incredibly kind and helpful. Almost everything had a Made in the USA sticker which I appreciated. There are picnic tables outside with beautiful views and plenty of wildlife wandering around. My favorite part was that all the trees are labeled. Almond tree, apple tree, everything clearly marked. Honestly every farm should do that so you know what you are looking at when you pass by. Definitely worth stopping for pie and hopefully a cinnamon roll if you get there early enough.

The rest of the house is a little store that sells jams, syrups and other food. More importantly, there is the selection of cute personal sized pie on different flavors, cinnamon roll and homemade ice cream. You queue up to the register and tell them what kind of pie(s) you want. We chose the peach pie and a cinnamon roll. They take credit card but add the 3% merchant fee btw. There's picnic tables at which you can enjoy your sweets. The pie.... Wow! The crust was so flaky and light and the peach filling had just the right amount of sweetness. No wonder the pies sell out quickly. The cinnamon roll was so soft and the frosting was so good! It was a perfect way to fuel our day in the park! Parking is across the street.
