Scheduled to come into work late so I could stop by Hill's Barbershop at 0930 (opening time for a Friday according to website posted hours) for a haircut. I was there from 0925 until 0940 and no one showed up; door locked, lights out. So I yelped for the next closest barbershop which was Rudy's. First time at Rudy's and was impressed all around. I found a new favorite barber. Seeya later Hilll's! Walked back past Hill's on my way home a few minutes after 10am and still no one at Hill's. Not sure how Hill's expects to run a reputable and profitable business when you don't show up for work? Since Hill's was sold to another owner, it appears this barbershop is destined for a downfall. I just don't understand why you own what was the number one rated barbershop in Redmond and then let it go down the toilet. read more

Hill's Barbershop is a great place for a haircut. The service is fantastic and the owner tries to be flexible with my schedule. The haircut is as good as anywhere I've ever been and his prices are very reasonable. I've been here about a dozen times now and will continue to go back. My man called ahead for a hair cut and confirmed his appt time ahead of time and when he arrived the Asian barber who he was scheduled with, upon seeing my boyfriend, told him he can't do his hair (bc he's black). How are you a barber and don't know how to do black hair? Don't they teach you how to do all hair types in beauty school? How can my first visit be the best and then my next visit be such a disaster? I have a picture of my haircut posted here. As you can see, some of my hair is half the height as some others. Just half, not gradual or anything. I actually took it because I wanted to show you guys the one tuft of hair that is just standing taller than all of them. I pulled them all up and hey! surprise tuft of hair, hello! So, Here's the point, walking in, I told him, I need a #2 on the sides and that I wanted to keep a young hair style and do something with the top. He looked and told me that he was going to take 1/2 inch off and I said that sounded good. Half way into the cut, I felt it get pretty close and when I looked down, hey!!! WTH why is there 3-4 inches of hair on the ground?! His response was, eh, don't worry, it's less maintenance. That's not what you consulted me on! Who does that? It took me 5 months to grow and feed that. His attitude was more like a joke than an apology so here is my review and never going back again. His current clients consist of older Hill's clients. No frills, straight shooting, baseball loving folk that probably are good with his style. Not modern, warning. If you're looking for a $30 buzz cut, this is the place. read more

For a competent, clean men's haircut for a good price, you can't beat Hill's. Yong (sp?) is a pleasant guy and fun to talk to. He takes his time and is very consistent if you let him know the style he did last time. His prices are very reasonable, much cheaper than a fancy salon, which is good because his shop is definitely not fancy. You don't make an appointment, just go on in and wait your turn old school. I came to Hill's Barbershop to get my hair cut because Hair FX nearby was booked for a while. I saw the sign for this place and wandered in. I had to wait a bit for the guy in front of me to be finished, but it wasn't a big deal. Young was polite and professional. I asked for my hair to be completely cut off, and he left maybe about a millimeter but not enough to complain about. What's definitely worth complaining about, however, is the price. He charged me twenty dollars for this, the simplest hairstyle in the world. I don't know why it should cost twenty dollars to have my head shaved completely bald. What makes this worse is that I didn't see the price on any menu, and my hair was very short to begin with. Asking twenty dollars for such easy work is completely ridiculous. I've had more complex hairstyles done at places like Hair FX for half the price. Other places will actually wash your head under water after the haircut or even give you a massage; this place did neither for me. He only vacuumed my head and asked for twenty dollars. Good thing he was nice and the place is conveniently located for me, because otherwise this review would have been more unfavorable. read more

Mike Hill cuts hair like it used to be. Old bottles of Aqua Velva sit as monuments to the history of his shop originally opened by his father. His chairs still have ashtrays built into them even though Mike convinced his father to disallow smoking decades ago, well before non-smoking became fashionable. Hill gives great haircuts to men only, no children, though occasionally his granddaughter will stop by for a trim. The barber is a master conversationalist with sharp wit and enough of an older man's grumpiness to keep things sharp. He can talk about anything but prefers baseball as evidenced by the MLB caps and ever present baseball game on the newly installed LCD. There's only Mike and occasionally the wait can be three to four people deep though some of the his older customers take only a couple of minutes given their lack of hair. It's almost comical but they've been seeing Mike so long it it makes sense. Reservations are not taken, Mike expects you to remember the order of customers and feel free to sit even though the last customer is still paying. Hill's Barber Shop may be moving across the street but as Mike says, "My customers will follow me." Indeed they will. read more

I went to Hills after a string of on-off relationships with other "Barbers" (read "stylists with "Barber" in their business name"). Mike is one of the last men of his kind. A real old fashioned barber that cuts hair in the ways of yesteryear. He's always up for some conversation, a die hard Mariners fan.. He gives a great consistent haircut every time. Finishing with his signature vacuum so you don't get hair trimmings everywhere. He's got a mini "museum" in the corner with old hair tonics and straight blades. A sign he's taken up this craft from his father before him. I've had some great haircuts, some truly awful haircuts. Mike does a great consistent job each time at a much cheaper price than the stylists. My wife gives a thumbs up every time. read more

I've been going to Hill's for about a year now, and have been very happy with the quality of the haircuts I receive and the pleasant feeling of the barbershop. It's pretty much just walk in, get hair cut, and walk out. No appointment necessary, and the worst wait I've had was around 15 minutes. Very happy customer. Regarding some of the lower reviews for this barbershop, note that the barber changed around 2015, so the barber is different and he now accepts credit/debit card payments. Street parked just to dash in and make an appt. No can do but there's a chair open - in & out with a great cut in under 20 minutes! I had been to Mike Hill's original place across the way a couple times before it was torn down and he moved into this new locale. It is a huge improvement that takes old-school ambience and approach out of the shadows and shows it off to a T. Lots of new staff, competent and quick. Trying to find someone new to cut your hair is a challenge, a give and take. Figuring out a way to talk about something as nebulous as how you want your hair to look and getting that translated into a finished product requires patience and understanding on both ends. I wanted to like Mike, he is well reviewed on yelp and seemed like a good choice for a guy new to the area. Maybe I came in on an off day, but he was crotchety from the get go. I don't think he was listening to much of what I said, he kept pulling conversational threads out of mid air from whatever internal monologue he had going through his head and address them like they were things I had just said. Eccentric, but thats fine I've never had a problem with eccentric. After the initial cut he had me look it over and I said it still seemed longer than I was going for. This seems natural: I say shortish on the sides, he does his best to interpret my meaning while staying on the longer "safe" side of things. Aparently this kind of approach is not natural for him, he let out a long sigh and told me he didn't like to give 2 haircuts for the price of one. Something that seems completely unreasonable to me. Nevertheless I apologized and thanked him for working with me, we are now about 10 minutes in from sitting down in the chair. He took a little bit more off and we repeated the process with him growing more exasperated all the while. Note: this is at 9:45am and the store is completely empty. After the third round not much had changed so I thanked him and went my own way. I was not satisfied with the haircut or the service and for 25 bucks thats a shame. I read the reviews on yelp before trying anyone here in Redmond. I like the idea of the old-school barbershop, I like the description Mike I found here before going. But that is not what I got at Hill's. I got a crotchety old man who had no patience and overcharged me for a quick buzz. My husband went in for a simple cut and Mike was a very crotchety, impatient person. He definitely had an attitude and behaved like he didn't care about people at all. He sure needs to learn how to treat people with kindness, since he's in the business of working closely with people. He's definitely not a happy camper. Does NOT listen to what you want. If you want a very short haircut, then you will be happy. That seems to be what he does. I asked to trim my hair back to a little over the ears and leave an inch on the sides and back. I got almost a buzz cut. He had no reaction when I said I was not happy. read more

Relocating to the area and needed to find a barber. I was looking for something local (and non-chain) and found Hill's Barbershop. Met Young who as been there for over a year (barbershop has been there for decades). This is a no frills barbershop and shouldn't be confused with the fancy salons with all the trimmings (which is just fine with me). I don't have the easiest hair to cut and Young did a good job considering it was the first time he cut my hair. Given my first experience, I will be back again. read more
