Went to Hill's gym for a 5 year old's birthday party. Was very impressed how the staff took charge and got the kids into small groups and rotated them throughout the gym doing all the activities. Then there was some "free time" for the kids to revisit their favorite activities. Then it was cake and snack time in a separate room which was set up very nicely. I will be canceling my monthly subscription and moving on to other gymnastics centers. I would not recommend this center as they really don't seem to care about some of the lower level classes. Specifically, our daughter is signed up for mini gymies at 6:30PM on Thursday. On 12/1, our daughter expressed some frustration that she was pushed by other kids and was in tears. A couple of things happened that really frustrated me and I made the decision to leave this review. Number 1- when I tried to console my daughter at the outskirts of the number in a corner, I was told by one staff member that I could not be inside the gym. I told them I understand, but my daughter is in tears, and I'm just trying to calm her down. Once I do that I will leave and take her thru the main door and try to get her back in class. The staff kept saying no, I can't stay there. It got to the point that I just ignored her and kept calming my daughter down. Be flexible! and understand the situation! Unbelievably rude trying to kick me out of the gym while I'm just trying to calm my daughter down. Number 2- Afterwards, my daughter calmed down and expressed that she wanted to go back to class. So I took her back to the main door. Once back in, she again came out in tears stating that someone pushed her. I tried to bring it to the teacher's attention. Again, i understand, lots of kids, maybe no one saw it; but I'd like to see more proactiveness in trying to figure out what happened, rather than just 'don't know, don't care' attitude. All in all... I don't think Hill addressed the situation properly and will be taking my business elsewhere. I would NOT recommend this business. read more

The instructors are great here. The biggest, and only, issue so far is the seating. If you don't get in here 30 minutes or more before your child's scheduled class time you can forget it! We usually find a seat after about 10 minutes of waiting for the other parents to leave. It's not so bad given that there are plenty of viewing windows in the waiting area. We just stand and stare until a seat opens up. There is a microwave for our use which is great too. My kids are usually ready for a snack or dinner mid-way through waiting for my daughter to finish up. We have the option of bringing dinner if we choose. Since my daughter started (she's 7) she has learned a back hand spring! She's super excited about this as am I. This place has smaller class sizes than other centers that we've checked out. My daughter gets more focused attention. We've been to Top Flight in Columbia, then tried Silver Stars in Silver Spring, Dynamite in Rockville, and now here we are at Hills. We plan to stay because it has proven to be the best instruction that my daughter has had this far. By the way...Dominique Dawes trained here (a few other olympians as well). I was in Hills a couple weeks ago for my daughter to have a trial. I was very disappointed to see that some of the staff was on their phones while practice was happening. One "coach" was on her phone for 30 mins. Another parent said she was dating the owners son, and that she did this all the time. read more

My daughters love Hills. We have been here at least a year and my oldest has improved so much. My youngest was doing great with Megan but now has Mr. Edward and has become stagnant under his instruction/lack of instruction. The majority of the staff is very friendly with the exception of the gentleman who works the front desk on Sundays during open gym (he is not child friendly at all). The cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. The bathrooms are always horrible and staff only enters them if you go to complain (which still may not result in a clean bathroom). read more

I have been a gymnastics coach and instructor since 1996. I've worked at several gyms around the country. Hill's Gymnastics is an example of what a gymnastics facility should be. The sports of gymnastics is the hardest sport in the world. It's not for everyone. To be successful takes hard work and dedication. Hill's is so good at working towards each child's benefit. The classes are set up so that kids that have potential to do well can be seen and move in to the direction best for them. That could be team, Xcel or specific classes. I worked there full time for over 12 years and it was one of the best experiences of my life. The staff are knowledgeable and know what they are doing. You have to remember, this is not Starbucks, try are there to teach and make gymnast's, not to tell you what you want to hear. That's not fair to the gym or the gymnast. I would recommend Hill's to my closest friends and family and stranger's. Kelli, Cynthia ,Amy, Willy and everyone else are phenomenal. read more

My daughter has been training at Hill's for the past 5 years, starting in classes and moving onto the competitive team. The coaches have always supported her working toward her goals. I've been particular impressed with their handling of the things during the pandemic, especially in the return to the gym. As any parent, I was nervous at first, but felt confident in her return after seeing all of the steps that Hill's took to protect the athletes and staff....and 3 months in they are still has vigilant about cleaning, temperature checking, mask wearing, distancing, and managing numbers as they were in the early weeks. This is not an easy feat to accomplish but they are committed to complying to ensure safety and to keep the gym in business to be here for the community. read more

Also - consistency is an issue here. There is a sign that says masks are required and I have seen them tell other students and parents to mask up. But this is not applicable to everyone - their star olympic alternate is the exception so what kind of example is this setting? Then and this was pretty frustrating to watch. But a parent was videoing her child and another child ran into the camera view and that parent's child complained at the desk. Now the sign says to try to video or photograph only your child but I will tell you as I sat there, I saw at least 2 other moms videoing their child but only this one mother was spoken to. And quite honestly the mom handled it well - she retorted to the concerned parent "well - were you looking over my shoulder at my phone bc that is invasion of my privacy." it was a little tense and the employee had said her piece and walked away. but she only said it to the one parent and did not address the other 2 soooo not great. The employee could have just made a general announcement. And also this is the first gym I have ever been to with this rule. Other gyms we have attended had us sign a photograph waiver that covered the gym taking pics or any "incidental" pics with your child in it by other parents. There are a lot of gym options in this area so Hills is going to need to step it up to keep people. One day as we were getting ready to leave, I overheard 2 people talking and were very frustrated with the gym's lack of COVID responsiveness. It is disappointing especially as we keep hearing of increased numbers of infection. Other gyms have people wait outside until the prior class is emptied out but as mentioned in my other review and they continue this practice - everyone is coming and going through this small corridor to get shoes and collect children. read more

Overrated We attended for over 3 years and have been there multiple times a week through out that time. 90% of the teachers do not have experience required. The more advanced ones (Gretchen is a great example) have no social skills and don't know how to provide constructive criticism. The bathrooms are gross, there is not enough space and no refunds or make up classes. I do not recommend this location to children or advanced athletes. read more

My girls started studying here at the end of last year and not only do they love it, I see an improvement in their listening to direction, coordination and flexibility in such a short time. Mr Willie is amazing and my 2 year old adores him. It's constantly changing so the kids don't get bored and Thursdays are a favorite in our house because they wait all week for gymnastics!!! read more

Attended a 5 year old's birthday party and was simply unimpressed. The greeter Anya quickly and unenthsiastically said "you can sign here" but didn't interact with my 2 sons at all. The other 4 teachers (no idea of their names because no one wore nametags) inside the gym appeared bored and uninterested in working with kids. I didn't witness one high-five or any type of celebration while the birthday guests went through the stations. The instructor demonstrated what the kids were supposed to do, then called each kid up one at a time. After each child's turn, it was, "okay group line up to go to the next station." Parachute activity lasted 10 minutes but lacked energy. I understand that they are a competitive gym and maybe the birthdays are just a way to make some extra revenue on the weekends. However, shouldn't the birthday be about having FUN and making the birthday child feel special. Gym is covered in chalk and smells like dirty sweaty bodies. I've been to The Little Gym and Romp 'n Roll for parties and they always have immaculate facilities. If your child wants a gymnastics party, I wouldn't recommend bringing them to Hills. read more

My Girls had a good experience training wise, but I am concern about the instructors' attitudes. They are pretty unprofessional in their manners and approaching to the parents. Staff are quite rigid and they don't enjoy what are they doing. I would like my girls to obtain better attitude and manners from their instructions rather than only skills. read more

My daughter had a good and bad experience here. Mr. Willy was great as an instructor and very motivating and if this review were just about him, it would be five stars. Unfortunately, two substitutes for his class were both rude and inappropriate (not only to my child but to others). After I called regarding the substitute issue, I was told I would get a call back after it was investigated. I didn't hear anything for over a week, so I decided to follow up. When I called back I was given a "that's not what was meant or said" excuse for the inappropriate comments. It's time to sign my child back up, but no thanks, I won't be wasting my money on a place with lousy teachers, no accountability and poor customer service. read more

Just visited last sunday night for open gym with my 5yo. She had a blast. Very large gym with a lot of equipment; however, no supervision in the gym. We had never been there before so I had no idea how it all worked. A little on the pricey side to. I think it was $13 for two hours, but open gym starts at 530 so we left early to have dinner. Would be an excellent gym if more staff was there to guide the little ones. read more

I just signed my daughter up for gymnastics at Hills and she absolutely loves it!! I like that the waiting area has windows, so you can watch the lesson. There are some serious gymnasts in there, and they are also fun to watch. read more

I have never been more unhappy with a program such as this one. It is unorganized, the air conditioning wasn't even turned on in 95 degree weather while the girls are about to pass out, someone is always crying, the moms are crazy, and the coaches are borderline abusive and unprofessional. My teammate got very hurt and nobody did anything! All I hear is screaming and the younger level coaches are not fit to coach. This gym needs to get it together. read more

My child currently attends Hills and does compete in competitions. If you plan on your child moving up levels to start competing I would really think hard about it. The coaches will yell and scream at your kids. I have experienced being outside of the building and hearing coaches belittling young children, as young as eight years old, telling them that you make me sick get out of my face for example. To me this is a form of child abuse, no child should be put down so much by another adult especially ones whose job it is to teach and guide. Again please think twice before putting your child in this harmful situation. read more

So I once was a proud member of the Hill's gym. The building is large and airy with a great deal of light. I had my children do several classes and camps at the Hills in addition to a birthday party. What went wrong you ask? A poor communication and lack of any office management quickly cancelled a birthday party planned 3 months out. The staff was awful! What to do when you have to find a new birthday location 2 weeks before the party - Dobre Gymnastics. I stumbled upon this other gym and have never looked back at Hills. My daughter learned more in 1 week then she did during her 3 sessions and weeks of camp at the Hills. Not only that my daughter loved going - it was a win-win for all of us. If I had not had such a great experience at Dobre I probably would have forgiven Hills and returned, but I did and then could never forgive the Hills. There are so many other spectacular gyms in the area that are not only run better but the staff takes a strong interest in developing your child, even if it is only for fun. Maybe the Hills is great for competitive gymnastics, they have the awards, but for young children trying to have fun while learning skills this is not the place. read more
