Americans tend to eat turkey only on big holidays. Which is a bummer; it's a great protein choice whether it's roasted, grilled, smoked, ground, or made into broth. The better the bird the better the end result - and Hillside Turkey Farms has the best fresh birds around. I've been coming to Hillside since my dentist (a local who worked there as a kid, many, many years ago) recommended them. My Thanksgiving tradition involves picking up a fresh bird a few days before The Big Day after standing in line in the cold/rain/snow waiting to get in the store. Besides turkey (whole, breasts, parts; raw and smoked; sausage and broth and other finished products) they also offer chicken, duck, pork and beef. You can find cheaper (frozen) birds at big box groceries, but you will never find a better bird. Hillside has limited hours so check out their website before making the trek from wherever you are. I have always be treated with patience (as I never know exactly what I'm ordering, availability of anything they can physically do, the cleanliness is unbeatable, the organization of the fresh and frozen items are fool proof, and the selection is insane! everything time I go I have a list from all of the members in my family wanting their own orders and the kindness is wonderful. Thanksgiving the door is out the line- so order way ahead at a time slot and you'll have the best turkey on the table (all 3 of ours come from here, one smoked, two for a roasting and deep frying!) coming up tomorrow- getting my order together!! ten stars! Love this place. We first got the smoked turkey which was the best thing I've ever tasted! Be sure to make broth out of the carcas! SSSOOOO goood. Yesterday I picked up the 80 pieces of chicken and some roasters for the freezer. The chicken parts was all in a box and I vaccum sealed it for the freezer. The roasters looked gorgeous and is gonna make some fabulous meals! Hours are compact so plan ahead. read more

Two words: Smoked. Chicken. This stuff is AMAZING. Among those in the know, it's affectionately known as ChickenHam. It's chicken, but tastes like ham. Yes.. most smoked things taste like ham, but this stuff is just awesome! They also smoke turkeys and other stuff. (Quick hint: save the bones and skin from a smoked chicken, it makes a chicken stock/soup that is OUT OF THIS WORLD). They have great fresh chicken sausages in a variety of flavors that, in my mind, are better than the fresh ones at that organic grocery store that costs a WholePaycheck. They offer fresh products and then they also offer a few things you can have for a quickie dinner. I love their fresh sausage and the prices are hard to beat ! Smoked turkey was insane, used it for appetizer charcuterie with cheese and local pickles... well worth the price. The fresh turkey was big, meaty, and had flavor unlike the big turkey farm people, if you know who I mean. Going to go back and try their sausages, too! The turkey is fabulous, have been going there for years. This year only problem was when we got there we saw two lines.... no indication one was different than the other. We waited which we are fine with waiting. We I got to the counter the lady said next cash customer and I said I'm next but I have credit card. She said oh that is the other line. I was not happy. She waited on me and she took my card. The credit card machine was on side of counter that the supposed cash line was and cash register was on side with credit card line. I said I didn't see a sign about the line. She announced very loud this is cash line that is credit line. Now mind you there are people outside with a line to the road how are they suppose to know. Maybe post a sign outside. I would gladly have gotten in the correct line had I known better than being embarrassed read more

unorganized, rude and misinformed. I pre-ordered a 10 lb smoked thanksgiving turkey on Nov 24th. NOWHERE on the website did it say that they had sold out. I received a confirmation email right after I placed the order that it had been processed, and will be ready for pick up on Nov 26 (day before Thanksgiving). I called on the 26th, to confirm my pick up, and the rude woman on the other line said they were sold out. She then went on in a condescending tone, to tell me she had sent an email out saying they were sold out. Well, I was looking through my email as we were talking and NOPE, I never received an email... It was not in my spam folder either. She then went on to suggest me purchasing the only smoked turkey they have left -which is $20 dollars more expensive than the one I wanted. I can't afford that. I grew up in a family owned business, and the right thing to have done in that situation, would have been to offer that turkey for the same price as the smaller, original one I had wanted since she had messed up. But no. This is going to be my first time hosting a thanksgiving, and I wanted it to be special. Now I have to scramble before the stores close. I will make sure I tell EVERYONE that will listen to NEVER purchase from this awful place. read more

Heck yeah! I just finished my very first Hillside Turkey Pie while bunkered down here in the snow. OMG! This is the best pot pie I've ever had -- including all those girlfriends who thought it was their specialty. To think that one could spend more on a questionable 'chicken' sandwich at Burgerdoodle just down the road -- or have a rich, creamy comfort food meal that transports you back to Ed Sullivan and Gunsmoke... Turkey is my favorite (and healthiest) meat, and I was really looking forward to supporting this local family business, but if you read the fine print, they are not really turkey farmers, but turkey 'processors' - and most items have a longer list of unpronounceable additives than the stuff in the grocery store, and with few exceptions, almost everything was way over-seasoned. I bought one of almost everything they had (except the pot pies, which I might still try). Here's the score: 'Cuban' meatballs- mild, tasty, not too much bread crumbs, but so salty made my feet swell. Cajun 'blue cheese' burgers- the Cajun part was passable, but there was NO blue cheese- just milk whey and 'blue cheese flavor', and no matter what heat I cooked them on, they burnt and stuck to the pan; also, way too much breading (who puts bread in burgers?), and salt. Garlic wine turkey sausage- this was so salty I threw all of it out after 2-3 bites; I'll continue to buy fresh organic (nothing here is, just 'natural' they say, meaning 'no hormones'- but the USDA prohibits the use of hormones in poultry anyway) chicken sausage in Giant (excellent.) Turkey salad- small cut cubes of artificial tasting turkey with mayo and celery, strange consistency ('wet' is the only word I can think of to describe it), wouldn't even feed it to my cat. Marinated turkey breast - so much pepper it had too much of a 'bite' to it, had to wash it off. Fresh fryer chicken- this was the only acceptable 'unprocessed' thing there, nice and fresh. Prices are OK, but not any cheaper than the supermarket, especially on sale items, and certainly no better quality (and in some cases, surprisingly worse.) Bottom line, if you don't have high blood pressure and really like salt (and most people do like more than I do, I'll admit), try this place; otherwise, be warned. PS- Note weird hours; they claim to sell wholesale to restaurants, but if I was served most of this stuff in a restaurant, I wouldn't pay for it. read more

I have been enjoying Hillside's products for years. Always great customer service when I'm in the store. I love their fresh chicken breasts. I purchase several at a time and freeze some to have on hand for quick meals. Their turkey kielbasa is awsome either cooked or as an appetizer, just dip it in your favorite mustard. I use either their turkey bacon or smoked turkey wings when I make pea soup or beans soup so much better than ham. My absolute favorite item in the store is the regular turkey salad, just hand me a fork, I eat it right from the container! I will definitely be ordering my Turkey from here for Thanksgiving! read more

So my husband and I decided to pay for my mother-in-laws turkey. She gets it here every year and now she really cannot afford, but she wanted to do it for the family. She would not accept us paying for it so we were just going to pay and she woild pick up. Then she would have no choice but to take it. I called this morning to pay for the turkey. The lady took my mother-in-laws name and said hold on let me let you speak to my daughter. She got on the phone and I told her that I was paying for my mother-in-laws turkey. She said, "We're too busy you will have to come in." I left work early to make sure I made it before they closed. I went in and told them I was here to pay for my mother-in-laws turkey and not take it with me. Another woman said, "Oh no we cannot do that. We're too busy. I have no way of tracking." I explained i had called earlier and was told that I would have to come in. What horrible customer service. They are supposed to be family-oriented, but they cannot even be bothered to help out other families who are trying to take care of their family. How hard is it to put a paid stick on a turkey or write paid on a board next to that persons name. We have been going here for several years, but we will not be back read more

I was looking forward to my day trip to this business on my day off. Check the hours first, very ..very.. strange business hours. If you do happen to stumble into this establishment you may be the lucky one that is greeted by a condescending lady, yes the owner. Take note of what you are purchasing as they are not really turkey farmers, read the fine print. They buy their products from other wholesalers and repackage. As someone mentioned before, they are merely meat manipulators, or processors. You can purchase a majority of the items at your local supermarket, and considerably cheaper. read more
