When I asked if gloves are used to handle food, she told me they don't. With all the viruses and bacteria going around, this is very concerning. Delicious, efficient, fresh, generous. That is how I describe Penn Ave meats. They're right down the street from us, the variety is pleasing and so are the prices for the quality compared to other big chain grocery's. I HIGHLY recommend getting one of their house-made sandwiches. They're build-your-own selection is awesome and generously filled. Even though it says choose 3 toppings they oblige a couple more for a small charge. $8.00 and some change for an enormous club with most of the fixings is such a treat for lunch! Many products are local and they offer a decent variety. Definitely checkout the spice rack and definitely procure your meat / snacks from here! WHAT A SCAM! Read on to hear how I was nearly scammed and how this shop lost my business - which according to my budget spreadsheet amounted to $7,000 over the last two years - over a dishonest butcher and $3. If you read my reviews, you'll see I tend to be generous in my ratings.... Sometimes to a fault. Not this time. I went in to the store on F 7/1/22 around 1p.m. I asked for 2 pounds of Chuck and 1 pound of boneless beef short ribs. The young man who took my order gave me my Chuck roast at $5.99 per pound and went to the butcher with my rib request. The butcher - tall guy, salt-and-pepper hair, bushy mustache - checked in the walk-in and then walked over to the check roast in the case. He picked out two of the Chuck roasts and started walking back to the cutting area. The young man asked him something, and the butcher responded "he'll never know." He then cut off part of two Chuck roasts, wrapped them up, slapped a "boneless beef short rib" tag at $8.99 per pound and gave them to the young man to give to me. There are three things that the scamming butcher forgot: 1. People have better hearing than he might think. 2. People have the internet in their pocket to look up something as basic as the difference between Chuck and short rib. 3. When someone spends about $300 per month each month for the last two years spending their hard-earned money in your store for what they think is the correct cut of meat, all it takes is one shyster to lie -bout a cut of meat And Try to scam them out of such a piddling amount as $3. I gave the young man every item I intended to buy and left the store for the final time I will NEVER spend another penny in your store. Impact: Per my spending excel spreadsheet, I average $300 in spending per month at this store over the last two years. Doing the math - in a former life, I was a math teacher - That's $300 per month x 12 months x 2 years = $7600 in spending, which would have continued for the foreseeable future. Not any more. So I ask of the butcher in question and the owner of the store: was it worth $3? I WELCOME a message from the owner with an offer to explain the butcher's actions and why I should ever spend money there again. read more

The food and the service are always great. You are waited on as soon as you walk into the place. The meats are great. I love that the everything you could get sandwich made and buy your lunch meat for the week. Customer service is so friendly its like meet up with friends. Bought two large containers of their Beef Vegetable soup before Thanksgiving. It's been one of my favorites over the years. NOT THIS TIME! Meat was extremely tough and it was loaded with cabbage and tomatoes and almost no other veggies. UGH! Very disappointed that I had to "doctor it up before it was edible. Sorry guys, I won't be back. This store is something unique. It was recommended by Martin's grocery store because they had no brisket. The meat guy called ahead because he knew closing was soon. I drove there in about 10 minutes and found there were several people still checking out. I got to the door and the worker locked the door in my face with no explanation. Didn't even bother to find out why I was there. Mind you there were still several people in line. This is totally unacceptable and will never ever shop here. read more

Every time I want to buy quality meats I can only think of Penn Avenue, but there's so much more about this place to explore. The butchers are excellent, the quality of the meat is top notch and i love how helpful everyone always is. But folks need to get in here and check out the grill in the back of the store and the prepared foods that they offer. The folks at the grill put out some of the best sandwiches anywhere around this area and their daily specials are something you can't miss! My fave is on Monday when they have a double cheeseburger for an insane price. It's simple but perfect as you can see in my pics, how can you pass on a burger like that for less than any fast food joint charges and at 4 times the quality?! But every day is a different special so if you maybe crave brisket, pit beef or something else, these folks have you covered, just give them a call and ask what's cooking... If that doesn't fit your tastes then grab a fresh rotisserie chicken, a prepared meal or one of many different salads they offer. It's hard to imagine a better local place to have at your disposal, I personally drive an hour and a half from Northern Virginia just to shop here, they always make me glad I made the effort! read more

Super busy, hard to get through all the people in the store but they sell the best apple butter.

A great meat market that also has many local specialties, like "hog maws" and beef salad, and other pre-made salads, sides, and entrees. Everyone behind the counter is friendly, chatty and helpful, and also very knowledgeable about where each meat is sourced; many of their meats are local. If you are a beef jerky fan, you must try their housemade beef jerky; it's quite delicious. It's not smokey but just salty and densely meaty, and is very chewy and dry. Love. Also, by the exit, they have a great selection of local snack products. There are always excellent Pennsylvania Dutch hard pretzels of all kinds, and sometimes they also have Ray and Kay's extra dark potato chips, which are absolutely dangerous and addictive and impossible to find in the DC area. read more

I would say this is more of a "gourmet" meat market than your typical butcher shop. We picked up a sampler of things today and found the customer service excellent. We had some rib-eye steaks cut to order (8 oz) as the ones in the case were much heavier. They also double-wrapped to prevent freezer burn (just did it, we didn't request it). Nice selection of fresh items and they have a deli counter too. If you are one that likes to "heat and eat," this is your new "mecca," as they have quite a variety of freshly prepared entrees with sides. read more

Definitely won't regret it. Dutch Market was closed so I was forced to go to Penn. First time shopping there in close to 4 years. Experience was just a reminder of why I stopped giving this establishment my money. Went today and got the special brisket hoagie for $9.99. Omg our subs were huge and completely stacked with meat. So delicious and definitely had leftovers. The staff is friendly and accomodating (as I always have lots of questions) and even the owner, Roger Martin, is frequently about helping customers and offering tasty samples of their specialities like in-house slow smoked beef brisket, pulled pork/bar-b-que and Saturday's Baby Back Ribs - all truly delicious and at prices that are competitive with the super markets. Love this place. This is how a business should be run. Always friendly and fast. Quality meats and their subs and burgers are the best kept secret in Hagerstown. Their large sausages, I think they refer to them as Grillers, are the best. Brisket, hot, Italian, you name it they are all delicious. The hot dogs are probably the best I've ever had. They'll package your meat however you want and not roll their eyes while doing it. The subs are the best value in Hagerstown. I ordered two because I figured at that price they would very small. Wrong. Just wish they were open a little later as I have to leave work early in order to make it there. I'll drive up from Martinsburg just to buy stuff for the grill. The $2 MTO cheeseburger IS THE BEST cheeseburger deal in Hagerstown. You can get it all loaded up with whatever you want and they only start charging you extra when you go over 3 toppings in each category. (So you can get 3 condiments, 3 veggie toppings, pick your bread, etc). For like a quarter more you can get this over McDs or Burger King, and it's so much cheaper than Five Guys. Also they have a bunch of sides (all types of pasta salads, fruit salads, etc) so you can get a full meal for 5ish bucks. Great for lunch. read more

Pick up lunch about 3 times a week. The grill does an amazing job and prices are very reasonable! 1.89 cheeseburger is a big seller. It's amazing the grill staff can keep up with the orders, most times the wait is very small for a made to order item. While you may need to add some salt and pepper to the pre-made entrees the selection is large and there is something there you want! This place is a decent option in the area, although there are much better places to go if you're willing to go a little further afield. I was very disappointed that when I bought a large beef tenderloin, they were happy to trim it for me but not to make up the weight with ground beef or something else. So although they charge you the full weight of the untrimmed beef tenderloin (which is not a cheap cut of beef) you pay for more than you actually get. Whether you trim it at home or have the butcher do it for you, you're still getting less meat then you pay for. Other places in the area will give you something (ground beef or another cheaper cut) to make up the weight. The taste was fine, but I've had better. read more
