I would never think of getting lamb anywhere else. I called up over a week ago, spoke with Roland, and ordered a nice young lamb's leg for my Easter feast. Roland made it happen! And Josh confirmed that Roland had made it happen when I called before I drove the hour and a half up there to pick up that leg of lamb! Truly, everyone I have ever talked to at Wagner's is so down to earth and friendly. When I walked in yesterday, the cashier engaged me in a polite and friendly conversation about the weather and how lucky I was that the store was not too crowded right then. That never happens in any food store in Washington DC! In an age where simply finding a butcher is difficult, it is a true joy to have Wagner's in my life. In addition to a beautiful leg of lamb, I got 2 pounds of deep red ground beef, some killer looking short ribs, a healthy order of center cut pork chops and some of the best frozen veggies I could ever hope for. How do I know those frozen veggies are great? Because I have gotten them before and the flavor is like sunshine on my tongue!!! Just like fresh picked with no additives or preservatives! Wagner's is the real deal. I wish I lived closer to this store but my doctor who watches my cholesterol like a hawk is probably glad I don't. Could I find meat as high quality and fresh as I get at Wagner's? I seriously doubt it. But the selection, pricing, ability to special order and shopping experience cannot be found for love or money in and around the DC area. I highly recommend Wagner's Meats!!!

They didn't blink an eye when I asked for something unique, they happily cut two Thor's Hammer beef shanks for me on the spot. The shop itself was charmingly decorated with local Americana for the 4th, and the lady at the register was so fun to talk to! The quality of their fresh, local meat is outstanding and the team really knows their stuff. Highly recommend supporting this gem!

Airy and surrounding towns, fresh, local food & hand made products"- Dropped by here this afternoon, a big plus is Sunday hours in early March. Beautiful farmland- idyllic setting in farm outbuildings. We could see some lambs in an adjacent barn and it appeared there were numerous farm animals about, my thought ran to upcoming spring and summer and how much the children would enjoy this place. The store is small and a bit cramped, but we were hit with wonderful aromas on entering- homemade herbal soaps, freshly baked cookies, pies, cobblers and pasta. A refrigerator held a variety of local cheeses, fresh eggs, farm fresh milk and cream, and a freezer held the good stuff- bacon, farm-raised beef, hot dogs, sausages, and jerky. Oh how I love jerky. Children in the market were negotiating for different flavors of frozen custard that looked great. The lovely lady at the counter explained that the owner sends farm-raised meats to the butcher, and that a family pack type order could be placed. The jerky must have been processed by a place in PA per the label- it was fabulous. Thin and dry and perfectly seasoned, I at least got it home and defrosted before I devoured it. I also picked up some summmer sausage- have not tried it yet, but the smell is tantalizing and I'm looking forward to slicing some with some of the horseradish cheddar, some crackers and something to drizzle the honey over- yes, local honey. Wow. I may just eat it out of the jar, it is that good. Not much local produce- there is none yet, but I am looking forward to stopping back by later in the season, with the children- and the camera!.

It was our first time at England Acres and it is absolutely beautiful farmland! We met Judy and Hannah. Hannah took us over to the barn and picked up one of the lamb and let my daughter hold him. My daughter was so excited! We headed back inside and picked up eggs, bacon, lamb, steaks, and chicken. Nothing beats grass farm fresh food that comes from a place that is right down the street and where the animals have been very well taken care of. Don't get me wrong, it's pricey, but it's worth every penny to support a local farm, for the flavor of the food, and for your health!

We ordered hibachi and sushi rolls. Our meals came with soup, salad, fried rice, noodles, sautéed vegetables, and dessert (delicious vanilla ice cream). All the hot foods were cooked on the grill right in front of us, with the theatrics you'd expect from a Japanese Hibachi restaurant. Our chef was quite skilled with both the tricks and the cooking. All of the food was delicious, especially the filet mignon steak hibachi and the sushi rolls (a "Fire Crunch" roll with spicy tuna, cucumber, salmon, and spicy crab, and a spicy salmon roll). The wait staff checked on us frequently and someone even came running out of the restaurant after us to thank us for coming. Our part of the bill was around $50 (for one hibachi and two sushi rolls) AND we had leftovers. I expect we will be returning.

The couple preparing the sushi made us feel genuinely welcome when we walked in. There wasn't a lot of conversation, but their warmth and kindness spoke volumes. The highlight of the evening came after we had already left as she actually chased us into the parking lot just to say goodbye! That simple gesture made us feel less like customers and more like family. It's the kind of hospitality that's becoming rare and deserves to be recognized. The food was enjoyable too. My husband loved his generous serving of chicken yakisoba with fried rice. My sushi selections were beautifully presented. I'll let the photos speak for the food as what truly earned this restaurant five stars, was the heartfelt hospitality. In an area with plenty of dining options, it's the genuine kindness and welcoming spirit of the owners that will bring us back. Thank you for making us feel so at home!

(Anyone want to know how to cold smoke 24 filleted salmon in a cardboard refrigerator box? Let me know!). I needed to find some Chesapeake Channa to make updated Baltimore Coddies for a tasting event. (IYKYK, hon). The Trouts were able to special order the fish for me - not easy to do because CCs are a by-product catch so not always available. Outstanding service! If you can get them you really, really should. Chesapeake Channa are an invasive species that are wreaking havoc in the Bay. The good news: they are incredibly tasty, with a firm, flakey flesh that's suitable for pan frying, roasting, poaching (and sous viding, my technique of choice for this event). Everybody raved about how great the fish was - even after I told them that Chesapeake Channa is more commonly known as "Snakehead". (Hey, it worked for Chilean Sea Bass, which used to be known as "Patagonian Toothfish"). So, thank you to Lighthouse for helping me introduce an old Baltimore dish to a new audience, and help save the Chesapeake Bay at the same time. Score!

On our first visit on a winter Wednesday, we were impressed with everything we saw. Being a self-professed seafood snob with extensive periods of my life living ( and eating) in coastal areas, we bought some fresh fish ("blue catfish" to be specific). We help the Chesapeake Bay by eating this endangered species. We also bought some homemade compound butter - they have several seasoning blends. The verdict was that the freshness was outstanding and the trimming (no bones or other waste) was perfect. And with fish, freshness is everything. The price was fair too for the area and the service was personable and helpful. (Note that the inner lining paper of the wrapper stuck to the skin too much - they should change that but I'm not deducting a star - the fish itself was that great). On return trips, we'll check the other faire (shellfish, prepared-on-premises seafood, dine-in options). For now, we are quite happy and the Lighthouse deserves more business.
