I have been going to this facility for the past 16 years. I watched the transition into Hillside, and I truly believe that there is no better person who could have taken over this practice. Dr. Ikeda is so wonderful, professional, comforting, and personable. The assistants are all lovely, and some of them have been working there longer than I have been going. They have a rewards program that gives you points for every visit, and through that, I have gotten everything from gift cards to an electric toothbrush. My last review was in 2022 and Renie I. still has not upgraded to online invoices. How long does it take to find a good system? This is embarrassing for them and a huge security risk for financial fraud when using their company. Customers have to call over the phone with your credit card number which is highly insecure, a mistake is written down (on paper?) with the wrong card number and you will have to have another inefficient phone call wasting everyone's time. Then a PDF that looks like it is from Dolphin Management is sent to the customers. From their site, Dolphin actually offers: ***To send invoices using Dolphin Flex Plan, you'll likely need to access the invoicing features within the Dolphin Management software, which allows you to create, preview, and send invoices to clients, potentially with attachments or memos, and even charge them immediately if they have a payment method on file*** What a novel and efficient idea, and possibly a product they are already using. Save the administrative staff from this inefficient time and have it securely automated. Why would making the customer and admin staff's lives easier not be a priority especially for so long? As I said before: If hairstylists, acupuncturists and swim instructions can book and send out invoices for services that cost less, then Hillside can use a system that doesn't require mailing in a check or using the phone to pay. It should not be hard to find an electronic invoicing system. Square, Clover, Quicken, etc can all send out electronic invoices and you can pay by mobile or laptop by just doing a few clicks -- especially when it is off hours and you're working and/or taking care of your kids. Those systems can automatically send receipts to the customer and not manually emailed PDFs costing the front desk unnecessary time for things that can be automated and tracked with metrics for taxes. read more

We had a perfectly fine experience while the practice was managed under Dr. Righellis, under whom we paid upfront for the entire course of orthodontic treatment. Howeer, when we called them today after my daughter's permanent retainer became unglued from one lower front tooth, they simultaneously let us know that their first appointment was over 2 weeks in the future even for this surgent matter, but that we shouldn't wait too long to get this fixed since her teeth could shift. Under Dr. Righellis, the practice would have found a way to fix the issue in a more timely manner. By contrast, this is now apparently just our problem. We also learned there will be an additional $180 charge to fix this issue, it is not covered by the hefty $8000 upfront fee we had already paid for the entire course of treatment, despite failing after only 18 months through no fault on our daughter's end. This has left a bad taste for us. I can no longer in good conscience recommend this practice. However, it occurs to me that perhap the upfront $8000 we had paid was collected by Dr. Righellis and the new practice isn't seeing any of it? Perhaps they need to recoup costs in this manner? Perhaps new patients are not being treated this way? read more

Sooooo, this is going to be for an experience I had when I was child. I know practices change but I was hurt by this treatment physically and I feel it is only right I share my story. I was a happy young girl that did not have a cavity in my life but was referred to this practice for an overbite. I was made to feel like there was something very wrong with me at the age of 8 and began a painful treatment of head and neck gear. Immediately my athletic ability plummeted. It was extremely painful and no one I know has ever had both head and neck gear used for their treatment. I guess they felt my maxilla was too large for my mandible but we all know that is quite flawed logic. Had the right treatment been applied I would've be allowed to grow until I would be fit for lower jaw surgery, which is the only treatment for a recessive mandible!!! I did not find Dr. Rhigellis to be a pleasant or competent orthodontist at the time. He seemed like most orthos of that era. To be completely devoid of any independent thought. I'm sure much has changed but this is my experience and it is valid. I've had to undo a lot of damage caused by mindless orthos. This is just one of the cases. Please be careful and don't fear surgery if you have a significant jaw deformity. Braces can only straighten teeth. Good luck! read more

I live in Oakland and had used the dental school in San Francisco for my older son's orthodontic needs. It became clear that the drive and additional time we were adding to our calendars were just too much of a heavy lift for our busy family. So, when it came to my younger son needing orthodontic care we needed to consider something more local. We received consults from a couple Oakland orthodontist, and we immediately felt like the care that we would get from this office was the fit we were looking for. From day 1 they have been responsive, attentive, clear, generous, flexible, energetic, friendly (so, so friendly) and as careful with our resources as we are. My son needed a palate expander, sub-lingual arch, phase one braces and is now in maintenance with a retainer. This office has been attentive to all of my concerns, quick to address anything that needed adjustment, observation or fixing. When we first started the process it was outlined that our son would likely also need a phase 2 of care - meaning a second set of braces after all of his permanent teeth came in. We were likely going to decline this next step (financially and because we believe that his smile is sufficiently corrected), but before we could even do so Dr. Ikeda told us (after very comprehensive imaging and exam) that it likely would not be necessary. I mean, what orthodontist has ever said that?!?!? Love. We are so grateful to have found this practice. Folks who really see us and work together with us. I love that we are not nickeled and dimed. I love that we are greeted warmly - from the phone to the front office to the exam chair. This matters! I love that I paid one price at the beginning - per our agreement for the treatment plan - and I have never been asked for more. Not once. This matters! I appreciate the care, and thoroughness of the staff. This matters! The incentive program they have for patients to earn points (by good ortho care and appointment follow through and fun online games) towards rewards really engages my son in this team and his care. I signed up with them when it was under Dr. Rhighellis and I have not been happy at all with the process. You can't get appointments, they get booked up quickly, and you can't book in advance to save spots. This has happened twice in one year where they are so booked out you can't get your kid in. I get placed on a waiting list and you get calls like 20 minutes before you are supposed to be there. I have expressed my frustration a few times, and diplomatically, but they don't care. Further, I was told the braces process would not take this long and I found out I have another 1.5 years. I have also been sitting in the parking lot waiting to go in and if I don't follow the exact protocol - like call instead of text - you get a nasty o gram. In between not getting appointments and this prolonged braces process we are never going to leave. I have another kid who needs braces and there is no way I am sending her here. read more

First time going through this whole process with my son. They are very friendly, professional, they explain everything in detail, and they are great with kids. I was able to mutually agree on a treatment plan which was nice because it felt like I had a say in it. Follow up visits have been straight forward. They are very punctual which is nice because appointments are usually during the school day. Parking is convenient, there has always been spaces available when I've gone. As an adult in a waiting room filled with pre-teens and their parents I felt a little out of place. After all, I did have braces when I was 12 years old. Why was I revisiting this stage of my life? I have a muscle wasting disease that has impacted my jaw which affects my ability to chew. My dentist referred me to an orthodontist. Everyone in this office was so friendly and made me feel very comfortable perhaps realizing it was an unusual visit for me. Dr. Righellis asked me the right questions and we discussed the options. Pretty distressing and daunting, but Dr. Rhighellis created a treatment plan and has been with us every step of the way. I've been extremely impressed with the office during Covid. Dr Ikeda is excellent but doing business with the front office is annoying. Two examples: 1) For every appointment they ask that you "Please text us upon arrival to check-in..." Not that big of a deal but just another point of friction that is unique to this business. Yes I know Covid isn't over but I can't think of another business that requires customers to text before the business opens the door. 2) The front office ALL take the lunch hour off and do NOT start answering the phone until 1:10pm. We've been told for a long time by our dentist that my three children would need extensive orthodontia. When it came time to start the process with my oldest two children, I made a point to visit multiple orthodontists, knowing that we were going to forge a long term and expensive relationship. When we first entered the office of Drs Ikeda and Righellis, we were greeted by their organized and kind staff (this wasn't the case with other offices). What I observed and appreciated was that Dr Ikeda and her staff took the time to analyze each of my sons' jaws and teeth, kept them very comfortable and happy as they did, and they warmly explained TO THEM what they were seeing in a way that was easy for them to understand. They then spoke to me in more specific, technical terms. I knew that we were starting at a time that Dr Righellis was going to be slowly transitioning out of the practice as Dr Ikeda stepped in. After our initial meetings with Dr Ikeda, I knew that we were in skilled and caring hands. I was told by other orthodontists that both of my sons would need braces in their teens, and then would need to wait to get surgery to fix their bites once they were young men, followed by another round of braces. After Dr. Ikeda took the time to carefully evaluate both of my sons' jaws and growth potential, she recommended treatment to help harness their growth to ideally avoid future surgery. 1.5 years later, one is already out of his first round of braces and the other is close behind. They both are have grown a great deal since we started, and by using this to adapt their bite as they have grown, it looks hopeful that will be able to avoid surgery as their bites are almost completely remediated. When we look back at their original photos, it is shocking to see how much their teeth and bites have changed. We are thrilled with the treatment results so far! read more

I have a very complicated dental situation, and my dentist who is in another state suggested I see Dr. Righellis to see whether he could fix and/or whether I needed an adjustment to my splint. He gave me this doctor as one to contact while I'm in California for an extended period for a family surgery because the consequences could be so great if my bite were off again. Rosa, Dr. Righelis' receptionist, was so snide, unhelpful and gosh, I don't know what else, she exuded such a terrible and unhelpful "too bad for you" attitude. In addition to her bad attitude, she told me that to see the doctor would be a wait of over two months. So much for seeking help locally as I know my doctor in NY, as super busy as he is, would have sought to help the patient in the reverse situation. And here I was considering having this doctor do my orthodontic treatment. Wow, what a terrible experience and terrible office. read more

My sister came to Dr. Righellis about 10 years ago and he still remembered her when i came in for my consultation. ( he actually called me by her name during one of the visits. This happens alot cause we look alot alike so I'm pretty used to it) I decided to get braces as an adult and Dr. Righellis serves both adults and children. Once you call for a consultation they move pretty fast. The will take a ton of pictures on the first visit and they do some casting of your mouth. They use a lot of high tech equipment, the office seems to use a lot of different computer technology. So far I haven't been in a lot of pain. After each appointment my teeth are pretty sensitive. I would say extremely uncomfortable rather than painful. Advil is my friend. The office is pretty high tech and they get you in and out. They are very organized and they will answer all of your questions. The dental assistants (I'm not sure what they are called in an Orthodontics office) are very friendly. I didn't really compare prices before I went to Dr. Righellis but people have asked how much I'm paying and they think it's kind of expensive. The thing is the price they give you in the beginning covers everything - All of your visits for tightenings and loose brackets as well as the 2-3 years of aftercare (retainer and follow up visits to make sure everything is staying where it should. I like the idea of paying for everything and not having any surprise later. So far my experience has been great. It's been about 4 months but I'm ready for them to come off. 10 more months to go!! Update: They have a new associate in the office, Dr. Sears. I'm not if he will eventually take over the practice or if he is just a permanent addition but I do know one thing.....He is fine as hell. Pretty green eyes and handsome as ever. I knew they had a new guy but this was my first time meeting him in person and all I could say while he was talking to me was uh huh....uh huh and I couldn't take my eyes off of his. I would be willing to keep my braces on a little longer just to look at him but alas I only have 6 months to go. maybe I'll have to keep having "problems" with the brackets so I can go in more frequently!! read more

I moved to the Bay Area from the East Coast with just six more months of orthodontic treatment left, so I was pretty disappointed that I had to switch orthodontists so late in the game. Based on yelp reviews, I made a consultation appointment at this office. I was seen by Dr. Sears, who was confident that my orthodontic treatment would be done within nine months using the current appliances I already had even if it wasn't the same equipment they use on their patients. Better news came when Dr. Righellis told me that they would be willing to complete my treatment for the remaining balance I had with my previous orthodontist. Eight months later, my braces came off. However, the treatment didn't stop there. They fitted me for retainers. After the retainers came in, I was seen 2 weeks, 6 weeks, then two months later and will be seeing them again 6 months from my last visit to ensure that the retainers are doing their job. On top of all that, I was always seen on time or no later than 15 minutes after my scheduled appointments and the times I did have to wait, everyone profusely apologized for making me wait. read more

Dr. Righellis is an amazing orthodontist! He did my braces 19 years ago and was able to straighten a stubborn tooth that was rotated and other problems with my teeth. He did this without extracting any teeth. Other orthodontists wanted to extract several teeth, which I definitely did not want to do. Dr. Righellis came up with a plan that we were both happy with. Now my 8 year-old daughter has been seeing him for over a year. She has a very complicated case that I would not trust anybody else to take care of. He has an awesome staff, they are friendly & helpful. My daughter loves going there because they're so gentle & good with kids. Also, they have fun incentives for the kids, such as prizes. It feels odd to share that I enjoy going to the dentist - but I do! The reason is that I always feel better afterwards. 8 months ago they took a 3D image of my jaw and airway which they used to create an appliance for me to wear on my upper teeth. Since I have been wearing the appliance it has realigned my lower jaw to make it more relaxed, I am chewing my food more evenly on both my right and left side, it helped me breathe better, and, very importantly, it has helped me sleep better than I have in years. And I have more energy as a result. Both Renie (Dr. Ikeda) and Straty (Dr. Righellis) take the time to explain everything that will be happening during my treatment and answer all my questions. I have had an extremely positive experience with Dr. Righellis. I had a consultation with him to just get a second opinion to cover my bases and make sure the price I was quoted from my own dentist/orthodontist was in the ball-park. I was shocked when Dr. Righellis advised me that the only way to fix my problem was with surgery in addition to the orthodontic work. I went back to my original orthodontist and asked him about the discrepancy between his diagnosis and Dr. Righellis'. He examined me again and admitted that, actually, the surgery advice was probably correct. I then had a consultation with a surgeon who also confirmed Dr. Righellis' diagnosis. I visited Dr. Righellis again as well as having a phone conversation with him and then decided to go forward with the treatment. The treatment consisted of one year of braces, the surgery, then another year of braces. Now I have a retainer. Although the whole experience was quite difficult, it was made very manageable by the treatment I received from Dr. Righellis and his staff. He's been doing this a long time and seems to have it down to an art. He is straight forward, caring, skilled, and is always willing to talk at length to answer my questions and make me feel comfortable. The actual price and the trajectory of my treatment was exactly as he laid out before I began. There were no surprises. In the end I couldn't be happier with how my teeth look and feel now. I was 48 when I began this whole process and for the first time in my adult life feel good about my teeth. Dr. Righellis has my highest recommendation. I'm so glad I found him. I have two kids in braces. For the first, we went to Righellis because most of our friends' kids were there. For the second, we tried a different ortho because he was highly recommended by my dentist, and it seemed good to patronize more than one doctor when spending so much money. Both seem competent, but Righellis felt like more of a sales job whereas the other doctor was more low key, less pushy. The big difference is that in my experience Righellis's office staff, meaning the ladies at the desk, are not helpful. The other doctor's staff will WORK to get you in, at Righellis the office is always months out with appointments and if you call with a last minute request (which happens with teenage schedules) they don't work with you. On the whole, I'd say this office is busy and this doc is making bank, so go ahead and try another ortho in the area and save yourself some scheduling headaches. read more

I'm over 50 - clearly among the oldest patients seeing an orthodontist - but my crooked bottom teeth were causing problems so I decided to get them fixed. I wanted the whole thing done as quickly as possible. I was the annoying patient who wanted the braces off before they were even on. I'm extremely happy with my choose to go with Dr Righellis. He fully understood my desire to get it done quickly and did everything possible to make the process go as quickly as possible. I asked for shorter periods between appointments. He kindly made it happen. I asked for the braces to be as tight as safely and humanly possible. He obliged. He even accommodated my crazy travel schedule to get my visits in as soon as my teeth were ready for an adjustment to be made. In all respects he was fantastic. Truly fantastic. He has a great sense of humor and great patience! I'd never want get braces again but if I did, Dr Righellis is who I'd call. read more

I heard by more than one person that "Dr. Righellis is the best!" Additionally, he has great reviews. I have no doubt that he's an excellent orthodontist. But as an adult in need of orthodontia, I felt overwhelmed and rushed by what seemed to me like a sales pitch. I went in thinking I would get some Invisalign and maybe some periodontal work to even out my gum line, and I'd be on my way to a better smile, invisibly. I was told not only that I need JAW SURGERY to correct my malocclusion which does not work with Invisalign, but that the total treatment (orthodontics and surgery) would cost "somewhere between a new Prius and a BMW 7-series." That's a pretty damn big range. The difference between those cars alone is $60,000, so essentially I would be in debt for the greater part of my adulthood. I was also scheduled for follow-ups for molds, a meeting with "the team," and my referral for X-rays was shipped right out. Other reviewers indicate that they move swiftly, which I can appreciate from the efficiency angle. However, I feel that after hearing such a daunting diagnosis, a girl needs some time to absorb and ponder the prospect of paying tens of thousands of dollars to get her jaw cracked open while wearing braces as an adult. Again, I've heard nothing but excellent things about Dr. Righellis. But the fact that the possibility of insurance coverage for this exorbitant surgery was dismissed right away in favor of working exclusively with his specific team, and the fact that no one in the office even acknowledged my concern about payments was a little alarming. I like to have options before I spend a butt load of money. read more

He fixed my smile :)). I had a huge underbite that could only be fixed with surgery. I consulted with an orthodontist elsewhere for the first time and they told me that I could just wear braces and not have jaw surgery. This was the first and only time that I have ever heard "no surgery" because I have always been told I needed surgery by other dentists I have seen throughout my life. I decided to consult Dr. Ringhellis and sure enough, he said I needed surgery like everyone else did and I also spoke to an oral surgeon and he also confirmed it. My treatment here went so smoothly. I was ready for surgery within 8 months, which was super fast b/c you have to wait a yr. normally. I wish I didn't have to get it, but it was the only way to fix my bite without having to worry it coming back. He made my recovery so smooth. They were never late for my appointments. If they were, then it would have been my fault for showing up late. I paid $8K for braces. The price is not the cheapest but the results were worth it. Dr. Righellis teaches at Med schools so he knows his stuff. Also, why would you be cheap on your smile and braces? I heard that if an orthodontist messed up, it's really hard to fix your teeth later on b/c your teeth are basically connected to your bones. Do you research thoroughly before committing to an orthodontist. I totally recommend Dr. Righellis!! read more

Excellent work. They have perfected their system so that from the moment you have your consultation, to the day you get your braces off (which is today! yeah Gracie!) everything is seamless. They have state of the art equipment. My kids never complain about anything. There is an award system for timliness, which equals no waiting, ever. They demonstrate a lot of support for the kids, by posting newspaper articles about their patients, and pictures of post braces smiles. The staff is friendly and helpful. The office is clean an airy. My brother and i were patients of Dr. Righellis years ago (decades, actually!) Today, I don't hesitate to drive through the tunnel to take my daughter to him because he has more than just great results to offer. He is a groundbreaking pioneer who has invented many of the practices used in modern orthodontia (is that a word?). Beyond the science involved in aligning jaws and teeth, there is an art to creating the "perfect smile" that is different for each patient. What works on one patient does not work on all, and Dr. Righellis approaches each patient as a unique individual and thoughtfully crafts a treatment program designed to minimize discomfort. My daughter's teeth were pretty wild (overbite with front teeth sticking out) and he chose to take a slower, more careful approach because it would be more comfortable for her. He said it could be done faster, with the same results, but it would be less comfortable for her. I was really touched at his compassion- even if it meant a few more months of treatment at no additional cost. Speaking of care and compassion, his staff is really wonderful. His team is not the usual assistants you find in a dental office. The team are highly trained and VERY knowledgable individuals who are wonderfully good at making my daughter feel relaxed by thoroughly explaining what will happen at each step. This morning, my daughter had braces put on her lower teeth (phase 2) and she was nervous about what would happen. Claudia (one of the technicians) spent a few extra minutes with a mirror and the braces and tools showing my daughter exactly what would go where and what it would do and what she could expect to feel and hear during the installation. By the time Dr. Righellis came over, my daughter was relaxed and calm. Claudia stayed beside my daughter the whole time just to make sure that she was fine. I love that Dr. Righellis and his team take such good care of my daughter, and that they make the experience fun and enjoyable. It says a lot about their dedication to their patients and their dedication to their craft. I have seen a huge change in his practice since my days in his chair. Our daughters had a very good experience with Dr. Righellis, who is clearly extremely competent and attentive. However, I just called to see if I could make some appointments for my sons and was so offended by the snide, passive aggressive, unhelpful attitude of the receptionist that I will be finding another orthodontist to work with my two sons. read more

Dr Righellis seems great so far. The reason for the 3 stars is that the office as a whole hasn't been as good of an experience. The receptionists on several occasions came across curt and unapproachable. Bad day, jaded, perhaps. We will give them the benefit of a doubt and continue treatment there. The orthodontist himself has been a pleasure to work with, as well as the other administrators. read more
