I live down in South Seattle. To get to Ballard takes me about 45 minutes with traffic. A cab ride…read morehome can cost around $30 when I drink too much. But do I care? No. Why? Because I fricken love singing Karaoke with Melody Music's DJ Rob at the Waterwheel on Sunday and Wednesday nights, starting around 9:30pm. It's worth the drive, worth the cab fare, worth the hassle of getting back out there to get my car if I drink too much. Rob is a killer Karaoke DJ. He consistently has remembered my name, though I've become a bit of a regular so no shock there. He's got a computer system where he enters in your name and the songs you request, and can bring them back up when you see him again if you tend to sing the same songs, which I do. And his music library... "Would you say I have a plethora of [songs]?" "Si El Guapo." "Do you know what Plethora means?" "No El Guapo." Plethora means shitload. And he's got a shitload of songs. He's got so many songs they can't print them all up in their book full of songs to choose from, so if you are looking for something to sing and don't see it, make sure to ask. And thanks to his fancy computer set-up, you don't have to write down all the code numbers. You just write down the artist, song name, and your name, and he'll do the rest. Rob is real great at cycling through the singers, mixing audio, and making sure the spare mike gets volumed up if someone else jumps in to duet mid-song. He's got a small monitor to read lyrics from, or you can read off the huge monitor at the Waterwheel. Definitely worth coming out to experience the Karaoke joy with these guys.

DJ Rob is an amazing karaoke host!…read more To start, his music catalog does indeed have, as Wil so eloquently explained, a *shitload* of music. I can't believe the wide variety, especially when you compare his to other 'popular' karaoke spots catalogs. He also happens to love his job, and it shows. He's a great singer himself, works the crowd up, keeps 'em going, His system is awesome too. It remembers you and songs you've sung before, so just putting your name in there consistently and you can always have songs at the ready...or he'll even make recommendations if you can't think of one. And I'm still cracking up that last night at D's party, he remembered "his buddy Don L" from all our other "Yelp converges upon water wheel karaoke" events. And bonus points for moving me and Carly and another singer up a few slots last night, my reason was compelling enough to get him not only to laugh, but to do it. ;-) Stu made a great decision bringing Rob to the waterwheel!

It has remained one of the coolest dive bars I've ever been in. In the last couple of years, they started serving some really, really yummy food. I get the Philly cheesesteak, but have them use cheddar and put extra onions on it. It is absolutely to die for. Steve, the mastermind behind the majority of the menu, also recently added on Browned butter cocoa puff marshmallow treats. ZOMG! They no longer just have beer and wine, they have hard alcohol now. This is resulted in some, how you say, "more interesting" evenings than it did before, but overall the crowd is really friendly and supportive of the nightly karaoke singers. Had my first date with Flava Dave there. I don't drink and neither does my now husband (Flava Dave) so we go up and do duets and call ourselves The Sober Barflies. The karaoke hosts are always a lot of fun. Flava Dave picks up fill-in karaoke shifts there occasionally. Sam Cori is adorable, upbeat, and a classically trained singer and songwriter. She makes *another* performance of Bohemian Rhapsody fun and fresh again! We even had Gabe (one of the Karaoke hosts with a heartthrob vibrato bass voice), sing the music for our wedding and host karaoke at in my parents' sizeable rec-room afterward! He knocked my folks out signing Unchained Melody, their song, at our little reception. A lot of momentous occasions, birthday gatherings, and bachelorette parties take place there. I've seen a number of people get proposed to, and once saw a very spontaneous, actual wedding. There's a lot of really cool history in that place. It's over 100 years old and it's an official historical landmark in the United States. There's a lot of lore behind it. Stories of being haunted. It's a really amazing place to see. Plus, it's shaped like a coffee pot, how can you beat that?

These roadside America kitschy buildings amuse me greatly, and I'll always go out of my way to visit them when I can. Bob's Java Jive doesn't disappoint!

I recently visited Comma Karaoke for the first time after moving to Washington about 2 months ago…read more Back in California, I already had a favorite karaoke spot, but some girlfriends invited me here for a Sunday night out, so I figured I'd give it a try since I haven't done karaoke in Washington yet. We got there around 7 PM and it wasn't too busy (probably because they opened at 6 PM). There was just one male staff member at the front to check in with. No security, as far as I could tell. One thing they are VERY strict about is no outside food or drinks. There are signs posted everywhere, and they even checked our bags before we went in. Personally, I didn't really mind since the karaoke places I used to go to in California had similar rules, but if you're going to enforce that policy so heavily, I feel like the food should at least be worth it. Unfortunately, the food here was pretty mediocre. The yogurt soju was actually good, and the waffle fries were decent enough, but the gyoza tasted average and the fried spring rolls are a cheap knockoff of lumpia. They also gave us complimentary popcorn, but I'd still recommend eating beforehand if you plan on spending a couple hours here. One thing that surprised me was that none of us got ID checked even though we ordered drinks. Maybe we just looked old enough?? As for the karaoke experience itself, it was fun! If you've never been, they'll walk you through how to use the controls to find your songs to sing. We originally booked one hour but ended up extending it to two. The process here is a little different from what I'm used to since you decide upfront how long you want the room for, whereas my old karaoke place just held onto an ID and let you stay as long as you wanted before paying at the end. Not a biggie, just different. The place itself was freezing when we first walked in, but after singing for a while it became more comfortable. We were provided two microphones, and highly encouraged to use the disposable microphone covers, probably for cleanliness and for sanitation purposes. We were also given 2 of those little handheld percussion instruments (forgot what they're called) that you can shake and clap along with while people are singing to add to the fun atmosphere. The song selection here is fairly huge. The physical songbook is kind of outdated, but once you figure out the system controls, you can search songs by artist, title, and even country. English songs were definitely easier to find compared to songs in other languages, so I'd recommend using the booklet to find exact song numbers if you want international songs. The scoring system was also kind of hilarious because none of us could figure out how it actually worked. Sometimes it felt tied to pacing, sometimes volume, and other times it just seemed random. Some songs also felt slightly off timing-wise. Still, we had a lot of fun messing around with it and singing everything from rock songs to classics to upbeat pop songs. There's definitely enough variety for everyone to find something they enjoy. One downside is that the rooms are not very soundproof. About an hour into our session, another group came into the room next to us, and whenever we paused between songs, we could clearly hear them belting out sad songs at full volume. It was lowkey kind of funny though. When we left, we noticed there's a small square window at some of the rooms, including ours, and wondered if anyone could just peep inside.. In general, I'd say Comma Karaoke is just okay. The karaoke itself was enjoyable and the private room setup is great if you don't like public karaoke, but if the food tasted better, it would have massively improved the experience. There are plenty of [Korean] food options in the same parking lot, but I would rather just sing and eat at the same place. We also drove about 30 minutes to get here, so I was hoping to be a little more impressed. Still, if you're in the area and just want a casual night out with friends, it gets the job done.

He told me ID would only be needed if we planned to drink. I let him know we are Muslim and don't drink, and he said that wouldn't be an issue and went ahead and reserved a room for us. A few minutes later, I received an accidental call back from the same number and overheard him talking about us to someone else. He mentioned our religion in a disrespectful way, called us "weird," and said he would upcharge us and put us in the back room. This was incredibly unprofessional and discriminatory. It made us feel completely unwelcome. I was just trying to celebrate my religious holiday, Eid, with my friends. I would not recommend this place based on this experience.

We thought it was odd that there was a five dollar cover charge, but we went ahead and paid it. It was card only so we went and we got our drinks. It was very busy very packed. Well within 15 minutes of coming and sitting down with our drinks we realize that later on in the evening, it was a drag queen karaoke. It was amazing. We had a great time. We just wish we would've brought more singles for the tips. We definitely come back to this place and bring friends I really like the ambience how everyone is welcome here it is street parking but it was a real safe feeling environment and everyone was super friendly and the drag queens and their karaoke and they're singing and their performances were all super on point and amazing. Of course I went on Yelp like always do and checked out all the reviews and I saw so many bad ones... that sucks that so many people have had bad experiences and maybe I just got lucky. I walked in around 1800-1900 and it wasn't busy but wasn't dead either. The bartenders were nice and made conversation while I had a couple beers. I went outside and ended up meeting some people and had some more conversation. They seemed like regulars but we're pretty welcoming not all of them in the group but most of them. I would say the place is semi clicky but I expect that from WA gays lol. The bar is semi small and has a lower deck area where they host karaoke every night and drag shows. They don't have a dance floor which is fine by me because i clearly am not a dancer. If you want a chill dive bar to go to I would say this place will do. I went by myself and knew no one and I still managed to have a good time. I would go back in the future when im in TCM again.

The bartender seemed irritated we were there as a group, despite it being incredibly empty at 5:30pm. She seemed annoyed at my friend needing to double check her order on the online menu? My spouse went up to order at the bar and was apparently waiting in the incorrect spot but she ignored them, made no move to correct them or ask them to move to the register until after someone else went up to order. One of my friends went up to place their order and she just stared at them and didn't say anything. She never once greeted us as we entered or spoke kindly/professional to any of us. Despite happily greeting and speaking to several other people who arrived after us. I could have excused the poor service if the bar was super busy/hectic but it was so early in the day and there were maybe 3 other pairings of people in there... My friends and I are all younger and somewhat queer looking. I was under the impression this was a somewhat queer friendly place but it certainly didn't feel that way. I don't know for sure if that's what it was but it felt like there was some sort of prejudice from the moment we walked in. We were not welcomed there regardless. The food was pretty good, and drinks were fine. The service alone was so hostile and uncomfortable I wouldn't recommend anyone coming here.
