We are shocked…read more My fiancé and I have always wanted to stop in to Home Plate Tavern - we've passed it probably a million times on the way to family's houses in the Tacoma area and have always noted that it looks like our vibe. Happy to report that it is. First thing we noticed was that parking was interesting - there's not really a lot at all, but a solid block or so worth of street parking and we got lucky with one really close to the entrance. Service was good from the jump and they had a solid selection of drinks to choose from. We weren't there for food at all but I think I remember seeing a simple menu with a few typical bar food options. They've got a pool table here as well as a good amount of dart boards. Darts is our game of choice when we're out so we were stoked to see they had quite a few because a good amount of people were playing on a Friday early evening. Funny story - I happened to text my mom and tell her where we were and she told me that it was one of HER old stomping grounds back in the day and she sent me photos of herself with the owner... Who just happened to be there! I went over and introduced myself to him and he said he could already recognize who I was and how much he missed my mom! The rest of the staff ALSO knew who my mom was so clearly the team there has been around for a while. We chatted with a few other patrons here and they were all super nice and welcoming. We've definitely found a new bar to add to our rotation and are looking forward to returning soon.

Parking lot is super small, but they do have ample street parking right out front and we found a spot no problem. This bar is definitely on the cozier side, with maybe a total of 30 seats if I had to guess. There's about 10-12 seats at the bar and then the rest is booth seating on the opposite wall. The selection was rather decent for drinks, with them surprising us with not one, not two, but FOUR hard cider choices for my husband. Most places only have 1-2, and they usually are ones he doesn't like, but he got lucky here. Another bonus: strong pours. :) I saw a menu for food, but it was only a few choices - I forget what they all were, but I know one was a cheeseburger. So, probably don't plan to come here stuffed, but they do have snacks should you need it. This spot is definitely on the lowkey side but it was a comfortable stop. We're not in the area too often, but we would return if we were.

The times I was here with Steve we usually stuck with the beer selection and with what was on tap there. It's mostly local beers in the metro area and I remember the variety of that list being pretty generous. So that was all good. We even got some food to eat here. I have had their burgers here and liked them quite a bit. The classic type burger seems to be the Park Burger and along with fries it proved to be a good meal. Definitely a nice establishment for the neighborhood!

This is a typical dive bar with regulars at the bar looking hazily at their libations. Soft rock played in the background and lots of high tops beside the bar. I was asked to order and picked out deviled eggs and nachos! How could you go wrong even if they were so so? Well, the joke was on our friend because they were delicious! The deviled eggs had bacon crumpled on top with sliced green onions and were served on a bed of greens! The nachos were well covered and must have been prepared in layers. Dive bars can have great food!

My daughter had just turned 21 and we wanted to take her out, so about 10 of us headed into Bumpy's. The second we walked in we were greeted with eyerolls and a very bi**hy attitude from the bartender. Before we could even order, she yells "We don't serve anyone with a vertical". Okay - well apparently you don't like tips then? In Washington you can't get your horizontal until AFTER you turn 21. So that means the day of your 21st - you're going to have a vertical and probably will have it for the next 3-6 weeks after. Initially they tried to tell us it's the law. WRONG. The only law is that the establishment has to check the birthdate and the photo. The staff at Bumpy's wanted no part of that - which, how lazy can you get?! Call me crazy but I don't think many kids with fakes are going to get a VERTICAL fake! Use your brains Bumpy's. If the liquor board is on your a$$ for serving minors - it's not because you're serving people with vertical IDs. It's because you aren't checking the birthdate and the photo on the HORIZONTAL ID to begin with - and you clearly don't own a scanner. Zero reason to greet customers so rudely. Just bad business all around. Too bad, too.. We're good tippers. That bartender could've made about $300 just off us.

New singers went first, and everyone took turns. It was so polite. There were your usual karaoke groupies, and even a potential Susan Boyle. (One woman did these amazing covers of Bonnie Raitt and Simon/Garfunkal) There's a pool table and some games, along with all the usual bar food. I don't know if they serve actual meals from anything other than a microwave, though, and I wasn't ready to skim the menu. A friend had a White Russian ($7) and it seems the drinks were strong. Coke was $2.25 or near that. Is that cheap? I don't know. There was also a military element there, or a retired military element. Lots of banners, and you definitely want to be in the "pro-military" frame of mind at this place, or at least accepting. It seemed like a lot of the Air Force people were there. (Frankly, I like military people... they are so polite!!) I was gravely concerned when a person in my party "outed" himself on the karaoke mic because the machine stopped working on the gay songs, as though it had a "gay-off" switch, but they LOVED him! Honestly, it made everything better. We looked great together and just kept the energy going. I had a few drinks (he's a no-alcohol guy), and we spent about two hours playing games, laughing, and just genuinely enjoying ourselves. It was such a fun time, and I really want to go back. The only downside is it's a bit tough for him since it's a bar setting and he doesn't drink--but the games definitely make it worth it.

Lot of machines available, seems like frequent tournaments are going on. According to pinball map they have 24 machines, which is pretty large compared to some places. Not so busy you can't play though, prices are comparable. It doesn't seem too claustrophobic like some places, lots of space to move around. Full bar and friendly service. Places to sit. Definitely check this out if you like pinball. I don't think they have food, but I could be wrong.
