This might be the best tiki bar I've ever been to. The Old Hangout absolutely nails the experience. The ambiance is incredible -- every corner feels like a different world. There's a pond, a fire pit, cozy box seats, even a drum at the counter. My friend and I literally spent 5-10 minutes just walking around trying to decide where to sit because every spot looked so fun. The drinks are just as impressive. Super exotic, beautifully presented, and all served in unique tiki mugs. Mine came in a monkey mug, which made it even better. At one point, the bartender even lit my cocktail on fire -- such a fun touch. Speaking of the bartenders, they were fantastic. Friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about what they do. They really made the whole experience feel special. I only wish I lived closer. This would easily be my regular spot. Definitely coming back next time I'm in the Seattle area. read more

The Old Hangout is one of my go-to bars in Tacoma, but it's very expensive. It's hard to get out for less than $100 for two. There are several great tiki bars in Tacoma, with one (Devil's Reef) literally a block away from McMenamin's. But where Devil's Reef leans into the shipwreck aesthetic, Old Hangout reflects more of a tropical cabana. The water feature and fire pit are excellent touches, adding kinetic energy to the bar. Plenty of mood lighting, neon paint, and secluded little booths make this a fantastic date spot. Plus, being able to take your drinks and wander the rest of the building is a neat perk. Their drink presentation is delightful, and they offer more than just the standard tiki fare. After trying several different drinks, I've landed on the Mermaid Spit as my favorite. The sugar on the rim and bright blue color make it a fun treat. The Hawai'i Five-O burger is my favorite dish, with the appetizer sampler a close second. I'd pass on the Banh Mi sandwiches - they're bland, not filled well, and I actually chipped my tooth on one. Occasionally, the bar will flash and a thunderclap will echo through the room. I wish all the bars in McMenamin's were as intricately themed as Old Hangout because I'd spend a lot more time here. As it is, you'll still be spending plenty of money. read more

Make your way down several flights of stairs inside of McMenamins to the Old Hang Out. Upon walking inside there is a fire pit with seating, and several booths along the wall. It's dimly lit with a vintage sailor aesthetic and decor. It's so cool! Honestly, where you're visiting from out of town or are local to the area, it's a neat place to grab drinks with friends (21+ only). Their food menu isn't extensive, but the bahn mi sandwich is delicious and filling. The drinks come in a glass that looks like that you see on the menu. The staff were quick with our order and kind enough to split our group bill three ways. read more

Visited The Old Hang Out at McMenamins Tacoma on a Saturday with friends and loved it. Fun tiki-themed vibe with great decor and atmosphere. I had the Lava Flow (half raspberry, half piña colada daiquiri), super yummy, plus tots and shrimp tacos with a nice hint of spice. Service was great and faster than expected, and our server checked on us often. Menu is fun, prices are average for drinks with slightly elevated bar food. Overall, a great place to hang out, and I'd definitely come back (next time to check out the other bars!). read more

The Old Hang Out is one of the bars located at the McMenamins Elks Temple location. This is on the very bottom level of the hotel and it's one of my favorite Tiki Bars that I have been to! All the tiki decor is in full effect here and the bar itself is really cool with the mounted snake and mongoose. And if you sit in this bar long enough you will hear thunder near the bar through speakers from time to time. But not only am I in love with the overall vibe near the bar area and the seating it's the fact that they have a small indoor waterfall at work here. So you get the rippling and bubbling aquatic sounds also. There are some tables near the water fountain but they are very popular but we managed to sit near it a few different times. The menu is fun as it kind of has a tropical fusion thing going on as one might suspect as far as their cocktails and food items go. The menu portions range from size from appetizer or snack size to a small meal. This is my favorite restaurant/bar at this McMenamins location and whenever we pay a visit here I always to gravitate towards The Old Hang Out! read more

What a cool little "hang out". I absolutely love the decor and theme. It was really awesome. Looked spacious with seating at the bar and booths. It's a seat yourself kind of place. The menu looked great but they were out of the spring rolls. So the girl suggested the steak bites. I think they were like $19. A bit pricey. I mean they were good - not amazing. I also got a pina colada. That was pretty damn good. At the end we had a hard time finding our server so we kind of sat there for a while trying to flag someone down. We had a show to get to... Very fun tiki bar located on the first floor of McMenamins Elk Temple. Every few mins, they had ship horns and thunder sounds go off to go along with the theme lol We got to sit at the round table with the fire. Also met some kind strangers who wanted to share the table by the fire and then they treated everyone with lemon drop shots! I ordered the coco-nut drink from their non-alcoholic menu. It was delicious and tasted like a fizzy pina colada mocktail, would recommend! Tokyo tots and Jamaican BBQ sweet potato fries were also really good! Amazing! Why have I never known there's a Tiki Bar at the McMenamin's Elk Temple!!! This is one of the coolest bars I've seen at a McMenamin's. There is a fire pit and a waterfall and a giant bar in the center with booths and tables all around. Got the Voodoo Brew with a flaming cinnamon stick and served in a monkey head glass that I wanted to steal but of course I didn't! Fun tiki bar at McMeniman's! Down on the bottom floor, I think this is probably the biggest bar and definitely the most fun vibe and decorations. It was definitely busy but not overly crazy, and I had a nice time people watching and having some delicious drinks as I was here on a solo weekend trip! I love a great Tiki themed bar and The Old Hang Out is wonderful inside. The Old Hangout name doesn't describe what you might expect to see inside. When you enter, you are transported to a warm tropic mysterious island with a lot to see. Basically a Tiki Bar! As usual, McMenamin's decorators did a fantastic job with the decorations from the water feature in back and the round table surrounding a fireplace to the bamboo bar and thatched roofs and mini seating hideouts throughout the place. Every so often a foghorn sounds, someone rings a bell and lights flash imitating lightning. There is so much to see here that you need a few visits to take it all in (a great reason to return!). We came for a bite and drinks before attending a Halloween themed event at the Spanish Ballroom upstairs. Our server was super nice and helpful and checked up on us frequently. Along with Tiki-themed drinks (I had the Voodoo Brew) our table had the baked brussel sprouts, chicken strips, salad and Bahn Mi. Each of us like our food and drinks as the flavors were great. I'm a big McMenamins fan their spots usually nail that quirky, cozy vibe and The Old Hangout at the Elks Temple in Tacoma totally delivers on the cool tiki bar ambiance. The bamboo details, waterfall, fire pit, and tropical decor make it feel like you've stepped into a fun escape from the Pacific Northwest rain. It's got that classic McMenamins charm with a tiki twist, and I loved just soaking in the atmosphere when we first walked in. That said, service was a major letdown on our visit. It took a full hour to get our drinks, even though the place wasn't insanely packed. We were excited to kick off our night out with some cocktails, but the wait completely killed the momentum and left us frustrated. The drinks were decent once they finally arrived, but by then the vibe had fizzled. It's got huge potential with the awesome setting, but they really need to step up the bar speed to match the ambiance. We love the Old Hangout and we always visit when we go to McMenamins Elks. It has great Aloha inspired ambiance, food and cocktails. You can even buy some of the tiki mugs for sale. On this occasion it was Tiki Tuesday and all tiki drinks were two dollars off and they had a $22 pu pu platter. It had flavorful shedded pork, coconut shrimp, coleslaw (was pretty bland), yummy fried spring rolls, and macaroni salad. We had a couple tiki drinks to go with the platter. It is a very fine place. There is a fountain and a fire table you can sit at. Service can be pretty slow because of the extensive cocktails, but it is worth the wait. It's also nice that this is one of the bars that stays late at the Elks. read more

Pretty typical bar food (three stars) given the price/quality ratio. It's not bad - it is very average - but it is extremely expensive given the average quality. That being said, I like how they try to keep the food on the tropical/tiki theme! The drinks are good (four stars) and the glasses are cute. There are no prices on the tropical drink menu, so imagined they would be $15-$20 each, so I was not shocked by the bill. I will say that the ambiance of this place is very cool, buried in the bottom of the Mcmenamins building we decided to head here after a concert in the same building. Felt like you were in an actual tiki bar with the occasional thunder storm. Our server was great but also not great. He came by occasionally, but sometimes felt like it had been quite awhile. When it mattered he did take care of us. We ordered the steak bites and the pork belly bahn mi. The steak bites were cooked ok, but were noted to be marinated in chimchurri. They tasted like steak with no flavor. The Bahm Mi that was supposed to be pork belly was just moderately thick bacon, and some sort of slaw on a hot dog bun. The sauce that came in it was less than edible. I tried to scrape it off the bacon to at least save part of it but it was just covered. The server was kind enough to take it off the bill. The drinks left plenty to be desired as well. We decided to cut our losses and tab out. Upon paying and being ready to head out the door a girl and her boyfriend passed by our table heading to the bathroom and she proceeded to throw up on the floor in front of us. This place has potential, but just needs lots of help especially in the food department. I commend our server for trying to compensate for the establishments short comings, but there was just too much. read more

McMenamin's Elk's Temple is full of really cool spots, and The Old Hang Out is one of my favorites! It's a dark, tiki themed bar on the bottom floor of the property. Staff is always really cool. Love the variety of seating here. You can sit at the bar under the tiki hut, at booths, or a big fire table near the exit of the bar. Wherever you sit, there really isn't a bad seat in the house to enjoy the detail put into this bar. For food I haven't had a ton here, but we've tried the veggie spring rolls and the cajun tots. The cajun tots are a staple at McMenamin's so you can never really go wrong with those. The veggie spring rolls were also tasty. The cocktails are all tiki themed, of course, and I've tried the Mongoose Mai Tai and the Mermaid Spit. Both are delicious (and strong) and I always end up going with one of those two any time I come here. My boyfriend always gets the El Diablo which is spicy cocktail, which I'm really not a fan of... But hey, he enjoys it! If you haven't been to the Old Hang Out, it's definitely worth a stop in. Watch out though, you'll want to explore the rest of the bars! read more
