Don't waste your time or money. The restaurant was virtually empty and it still took a half an hour to get our appetizer. Then I ordered the shrimp and grits. There couldn't have been more than a quarter cup of grits in the bowl; just enough to cover the bottom. Portion was so small I had to stop on the way home and get something else to eat. This place was delicious. Only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because they were out of a few things. I made reservations online and showed up about 5 minutes late. No problem at all. Disappointed this visit. We were sitting near the hostess area. She pulled a bottle of wine out of her bag and poured herself a glass and was drinking it while helping people. Her broken bra was hanging out of the back of her outfit and she was in no way friendly. Just very unprofessional. We asked why they were out of the Crab dish we wanted and she said the chef was not pleased with the crab they were getting and sent it back. So we go to a steak place and they didn't have any steak. Then we asked if the chicken breast was a breast and they brought us chicken fingers. Keep in mind this chicken finger meal that was supposed to be chicken breast was $20. We were informed it was not chicken fingers but "leftover chicken bits". They also ran out of baked potatoes. We asked what happened and the waitress just got scared and didn't do anything about it except avoiding our table. As a fellow waitress I would not have handled it that way and gotten a manager instead. I asked to speak to the manager twice and even went to the host stand on the way to the bathroom to ask for the manager but one never came. The waitress brought out the check with nothing done to resolve the chicken situation. Finally asked asking multiple times she said they took $10 off the check. Still never got to talk to a manager. Very disappointed. This place has potential, but it is lost on bad bartending, mediocre service and even more mediocre food. Came in on a rainy Monday night and there were only a handful of tables occupied. We were sat quickly but it took our server a little bit to come take our drink orders. She was not knowledgeable at all about the drink menu so I took a chance on something new with an apple fizz drink. When she brought it over she admitted it may not be "right" as they were out of the apple butter, a main ingredient. She was right, it was awful. I asked for a replacement and ordered a sazerac, which was not at all like a sazerac. She apologized and removed it from our check and I decided to stick with the safe bet.... water. My husband and I ordered filets with baked potatoes as our waitress said the smashed potatoes "didn't look good tonight". That really should have been the cue for us to go elsewhere. Sadly we stayed against our better judgement. Over 30 minutes later we finally got our meals and everything was ok. It wasn't good, but it wasn't awful. It took us another 15 minutes from the time she took our card to get the check back as the "credit card machine wasn't working". $78 for 2 steaks and one cocktail. I have dined at Hilltop Grille on numerous occasions and cannot complain. The crab dip appetizer is a great starter for a group of people or just two. The flavor in the dip is nice. There are numerous main dishes that are good but I particularly enjoy the salmon. The restaurant allows for substitutions of the sides so I normally order the sweet potatoes and veggies (onions and mushrooms). Both sides are great, and the sweet potatoes are really good. Whatever they season the potatoes in is wonderful. Dessert options are available, however, I do not believe I have ever had dessert any of the times I have dined at Hilltop. One nice thing about Hilltop is they stay open a little later than most restaurants. So if you are in Athens for a night game and need food afterwards they will most likely be open. Service is okay, could be better but not terrible. The drink menu is large and they seem to have a full bar. There is a private parking lot for the restaurant as well as some parking in the stores surrounding the restaurant ( be careful not to park in these lots during the stores business hours as you may get towed). Absolutely the most ridiculous experience I've ever had at a restaurant. I don't normally leave reviews but this definitely called for one. Came here for a family birthday dinner with a party of about 15 or so people. We arrived about 15 minutes later than the rest of our party and sat down. The waiter, Keith, noticed us but took another 20 minutes to take our drink and food order. 45 minutes later, our family and friends had finished eating their food AND birthday cake and we were STILL waiting on our food; along with my poor grandmother who's order they simply "lost" apparently. We are understanding people and knew we came in a little late, so we didn't complain but we simply asked to cancel our order as our entire party was now getting ready to leave. This is where it all went south. We asked the waiter, Keith, to please cancel our order as everyone was about to leave. With a LARGE eye roll, he informed us that our food would be right out. We told him we didn't want to pay $80 for a to go box of steak that would be cold by the time we got home. While trying to explain this to him, he walked away from us mid-conversation. We were flabbergasted at this point by his attitude. He proceeded to send out some poor kid with our food that we had already asked to cancel 10 minutes prior. We let him know we had canceled the order and he said no problem and took it back. Five minutes later, Keith comes storming back to our table with an attitude that could be seen by everyone in the restaurant at this point. He goes on to loudly say, "So you're not even going to take a to-go box? You're REALLY going to make me throw out this food? Unbelievable." My husband explains to him that it has now been an entire hour since we put in our order and our party was packing up to leave. While trying to explain this to him again, he walks away for the SECOND time mid-coversation, nose in the air and eyes rolled to the back of his head. The second waitress, Kimberly, came back over and overly apologized for his attitude and actions and informed us that he has now left this poor girl stranded and on her own to deal with about 10 separate dinner bills and clean up on her own (which we tried our best to help with) My husband and I are appalled by the customer service we experienced from Keith. We are understanding people; both working in customer service and running our own business. Had someone kindly said that our food would be right out if we don't mind waiting and maybe even offered an apology for taking over an hour to come out, we would have gladly paid and just taken it home. We have been here maybe 2 or 3 times prior and the food is sub-par for the pricing, takes over an hour to come out every time, and is not a welcoming environment. I applaud Kimberly for her efforts to make the situation better, but Keith ruined a happy celebration of life and family with his actions and attitude. My entire extended family and friends will not be coming back. Save yourself the money and disappointment and avoid this place. read more

We have eaten at the Hilltop several times, once for brunch and a few times for lunch. We made a mistake and went there for lunch on graduation day and it was packed, but they still gave us great service at the bar. We have been very happy with the food and service and this is usually our restaurant of choice if we are taking someone out for lunch. Haven't eaten dinner there, but looked at the menu and didn't see much different from lunch. I love the Hilltop salad - you can pick whatever you want them to put on it. It was good BBQ with or without sauce, not fatty. BBQ sauce was good not too sweet. Husband got crab cake sandwich with fries. He cleaned his plate and loved the creole sauce. We were looking for a place for a birthday gathering with a private room. We only had one day of notice to find a place. I called around and so many places were misleading about booking and reservation process. Long story short this place can be summed up by small town southern hospitality! I called the night before and they accommodated our large group. Our server was absolutely outstanding! He was so humble and kind. Usually you get helpful or kind. He was both. The manager treated us like a family friend. He seemed very trustworthy and it seems to be a great business to support. The food was great. Out of 15, we all liked our meals. A few random things to know: the restaurant was quiet and did not have music. Depending on your event this could be an awesome or bad thing. For us it was great because we were talking and catching up. The menu is somewhat small. They could afford to have a few more fresh/ healthy items. The shrimp was amazing and seemed very quality. Portions were large and prices were reasonable. We will be back soon! This is a rare find and especially in Athens. read more

My husband, daughter and I went last night. Started with host not particularly friendly. Waitress was not good either. I ordered a martini that took forever to get (they were not that busy either). My husband ordered soup with his meal and had to remind the waitress about it. After booking the private room two months ago, calling a month ago, calling last week, and last night. They were unprepared for my wedding party of 40. Seriously understaffed, and wait staff rude to my guest. We waited 30 minutes to order food, 45 minutes for salads, and additional hour and a half to get our entrées. All while we watched other parties that came in after us receive their food. They were supposed to slice the cake, after being reminded, they used bare hands to slice wedding cake for my guest as well as turning the bottom piece upside down with no apology. The tables were not bussed and refills were slow and far between. They did give us a $200 discount, does not make it any better. My wedding dinner was a disaster. Drinks were quick, soup within a few minutes, and my entree delivered before the soup was done. No wait, and the food was excellent. Yes, a little white space on the plate, but for my money, 4 scallops well cooked and seasoned, sweet potatoes and grits were a good portion. We were visiting Athens the last weekend of April 2018. We usually like to visit local restaurants instead of chains. Chose this restaurant as the menu looked good and they stayed open late on Saturday night. They were not terrible busy as it was 9:00 when we got there. Waited at the front for about 5 minutes, multiple employees saw us and kept walking by. Finally someone said let me find the hostess. Waited another 5 minutes and still no one showed up and we left. We get to the Hilltop at least twice a month and generally for lunch. We've been going there for at least 7 years and in all that time I was only disappointed once. The Tuesday and Friday lunch specials are exceptional. They have sliced roast pork on Tuesday with an absolutely outstanding sauce. Friday is always pulled pork and coleslaw with french fries ( and the fries actually have taste unlike McDonalds) I wish I had the recipe for the dressing they use on the coleslaw because it can't be beat. read more

Really good steaks - they used to be the best ever, when the place first opened - they were handcut by the house butcher, I think they said, but they are a teensy bit intermittent now - still usually excellent. I've always loved Hilltop Grill for great quality steaks and service . My last visit was extremely disappointing. My husband was served a filet that had a large portion of fat. He politely asked the waitress for a different steak and showed her the problem. Several minutes later the manager brought out a new steak. I was thinking an apology would follow for the delay. Instead he told us he was taking the new steak back in the kitchen and reduce the size of it to match the bites taken out of first steak. He was angry and rude.. He offered no discount. We immediately asked for the bill and were charged full price. It's not the same place I looked toward to going. I explained the situation to the hostess as we were leaving .
