Took car in due to grinding noise in back wheel area. They quickly diagnosed the issue as a break caliper issue. Inspected front brakes as well and advised they were good, didn't try to sell unnecessary services. In the same day as diagnosis they were able to replace the back brake calipers, pads and rotors, a faulty tpms sensor and rotate the tires. Very friendly service, Trevor was great with communication. Up until now they have been alright. However, I brought my vehicle in to have the heater checked out on Wednesday (it only works at high RPM). On Monday around noon. I received a pile of pictures containing "issues" that my vehicle had (29 to be exact). I'm talking brakes, rotors, tires, oil, they basically inspected the whole car. My main and only issue being the heat I asked them if they checked the coolant to see if it leaks out fast or not. They said they could fill it up for about $30 per gallon. Upon filling it I received a video of it leaking out quite heavily. At this point it was going to cost $1900 to fix the leak. I refused and was informed my bill was $254.03. When I was questioning the bill I was told it was $200 to look into my issue (never was I informed of this until checkout if you google them it actually pops up "FREE INSPECTION") but paying $250 for basically nothing seemed wild to me. The guy at the counter gave me some line that if I had brought my vehicle in for an oil change it would have gotten basically the same inspection. This is where I had been bringing my other vehicle for its oil and not once did I receive any of this nonsense. Seems like a cheap cash grab for something they could have tested in 5 minutes. Instead of doing an entire vehicle inspection against my wishes or knowledge. I mean, "My heater is having issues, why are you sending me pictures of my brake pads". read more

There is nothing particularly wrong with Hilltop; it just has its limitations, which for an owner of a vintage Mercedes or Volvo would be even truer for ninety percent of the automotive services here; for the record, I drive a 30-year-old Volvo and have not desire to buy a newer car). For most brands, this is a very good place to go for tires, alignments, and relatively simple repairs. I needed to replace all four tires on my '90 Volvo and made the mistake of getting the Bridgestone Fusion touring tire. Coming to Iowa from Southern California, it was my fault for not understanding how penny dreadful any touring tire, including the Bridgestone variety that Hilltop vends, are for the road conditions in the Upper Midwest. The salesperson warned me; I just didn't get it after having not driven in snow since 1981 and living for five years in an area where the annual rainfall is less than five inches. That is not the case for weather in Iowa. Bottom line: Go for at least the mid-range tires here, even though they will be pricey. And take the Michelins over anything with a brand name ending with "-stone." I had an alignment done here; the alignment and wheel balancing were fine, mind you, but there was another issue that the mechanic had been unaware of in my vintage Volvo that might have been affected by the alignment--the drama of owning an older car. With a more typical vehicle, Hilltop would probably be better than A-OK, likely a five-star place. They are reasonably honest and quickly get repairs done--and will provide loaner vehicles to commuters if any are available. There's none of the big box-store scamming or Mafia-esque wheeling and dealing that one sees a lot of in some service businesses in these parts. read more

I would recommend this business to anyone for their tire needs. I had 6 RV tires replaced and it didn't cost me a fortune. Price is great. More important than that was that it was very important to me to get done as quick as possible due to an obligation. They put extra guys on it and got it done before we anticipated. When I was in town visiting family a few years ago I had this place replace 4 tires on my truck. When we went to rotate them we had to use a 1" impact to get the lug nuts off because they over-torqued them. Thank goodness I didn't need to change a tire on the side of the road. Just acquired my dad's 2012 truck with new tires from this place and had the same results when changing the brakes plus the lug nuts had a chrome finish that was warped most likely from them over-torqueing them with an impact again. They obviously have no idea how to properly torque a wheel or just don't care. Either way I'd avoid this place if I were you. ***RESPONSE TO MARTIN*** When someone has to use a 1" impact wrench to remove the lug nuts your people put on it means your people have no idea how to tighten lug nuts to "specs" at all. read more

Hilltop Tire Service was a great experience for me! It was recommended to me by a family member when I needed my tire patched. A couple other tire shops wouldn't do it saying it would just need to be patched over-and-over again. Guess what again? I got that tire fixed over a year ago and it made it through the Iowan winter! I went in, said I need my tire patched. That took my info, my key and told me to wait. I had my afternoon cleared for this. And it took twenty minutes (and there were other customers waiting/just arriving, too)! They quoted me before patching the tire and the price was the same -- no surprises. I recently had a flat tire so took it to a service station where I was immediately told I needed a new tire. A friend suggested I take it to Hilltop for another opinion. I had a great experience at Hilltop today. It was my first visit, and was there after having a flat and needed to purchase new tires. With a two year old in tow, this was not my best morning. I have long hated auto repair shops- the dealer was always up selling me and charging ridiculous amounts, the small shops can be uncomfortable to wait at or not the best communicators.
