Got a flat while riding and took an Uber to Hilo Bike Hub. Chris determined the tube was bad. We discussed different options for a more durable set up. He installed light weight puncture resistant tires, tubes with slime sealant, new Ergon grips, and adjustment of disc brakes. I was back on the bike in under an 1 hour. I'm absolutely livid about the bike packing service I received. When I opened my bike case, I couldn't believe what I saw, the handlebar had been smashing against the fork the entire trip because they couldn't be bothered to use the protective cover that was RIGHT THERE in the bag! The damage is heartbreaking, there's a hole worn right through the paint on my fork, and the whole case was covered in paint chips. I've been riding for 15 years and never seen such careless handling of expensive equipment. Now I'm staring down a $2,000 repair bill that I shouldn't have to pay. This bike is my pride and joy, and their laziness has potentially ruined it. I trusted them with something precious to me and they completely let me down. Had a great time purchasing a Trek MTB from here. Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. No pressure purchasing experience. Bikes here are on the pricey side, but these are higher-end brands, like Specialized, Trek, and Cannondale. Chris was even nice enough to give my bike a free tune-up at 6 months, on the house. I'm really disappointed. I wanted to have a great, dependable bike shop to turn to for bike repairs and more, but I think these guys can't think outside the Specialized box. They don't go far with creative approaches or ways of making a bike work if it's not from the line they sell or make money off of. They have no used inventories either, which is also a disappointment, given how many bikes are thrown away in Hilo. read more

I shipped my bike over from the mainland and took it down to Chris at the Bike Hub to reassemble. Price was the most reasonable in town and just reasonable in general. Turn around was lickity split. In my opinion Hilo Bike Hub is the only place in Hilo to purchase a new bike or bike accessories. I purchases three bikes from them over the past few years, and I haven't been disappointed. They carry the best brands like: Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale. They also have all of the newest accessories you need for your next bike ride. Chris is very knowledgeable, and is willing to take the time to help you find the right bike for you. If anything is wrong with the bike, or if you just need it tuned up he will fix it. He doesn't push you to buy anything, not like some of the other shops in town! Although the shop is small, they are able to carry a wide variety of products in their store. I bought a Specialized Globe hybrid bike about a year and a half ago - the price was right, and the people in the shop were really friendly. These guys know how to build bikes! Before I left the shop they helped show me how to take the wheels off, lube the chain and small maintenance. I've ridden around the entire island on this bike - through some pretty rough conditions, and I commute to work nearly 40 miles/day. I've had to upgrade the tires and change the break pads - which were readily available in the shop - they even helped show me how to put them on. I couldn't be happier with my bike and the service from this shop. read more

I shopped around online quite a bit hoping to find a "deal" as I do for most things. In the end I decided to "shop local" and found the Hilo Bike Hub to be one of those places that got me into mountain biking way back when. They are your friendly local bike shop with very knowledgeable staff and still do their best to work with you on a budget. I've gotten quite a few compliments on my Specialized MTB and even got a free tune-up once I broke the bike in. The Bike Hub embodies the best reason for going to local businesses: excellent personal service. I walked into the shop and asked for a "low-commitment bike" to practice biking for a biking-hiking-kayaking tour of New Zealand later in the year. (I hadn't ridden a bike in decades.) But the owner, Chris Seymour, gave me the same level of attention he'd give someone in for a top-of-the-line bike. He had me try out a bike after adjusting it exactly to my size, height, leg length, position, helped me ride it around the parking lot. He had me try on shoes and helmets, etc. Meanwhile the shop was busy and he managed to keep other customers happy, too. I eventually bought a much nicer bike from him a week later. The Trek bike was the same price from him that it was online--but I didn't pay for shipping as I'd have to for the online. The shop has very good bike accessories and togs, also well-priced. And a great friendly, very neat, cheerful ambience. This is the place to go for all bike-related purchases and service. read more

Reading the reply to my posting on service from Hilo Hub, Chris must have been looking at someone else if he thinks I was happy with a big smile on my face when he gave me a box with a big hole in it from another bike rather than the original shipping crate I specifically asked them to keep for me when my bike arrived so I could use it to ship my bike to Maui and the mad land for the summer. Yeah I took it as what choice did I have after they gave some total stranger my shipping crate who paid not one dime for it unlike me who paid more than a dime? I was so blown away I just took it and left and after thinking about the total disregard of this sale and simple instructions I decided I didn't need to do business with this company. Nice people and they did try to appease me but what I wanted was not available. The original factory shipping for my bike. Nice people but not as professional as I wanted in following through with simple instructions, if you want this sale make sure I get the original factory packaging. read more
