I really wanted to like this place. We chose it for our date night in Durango and were so excited to try the Yak Stew. We also got the Sherpa Stew. It was busy when we got there, so we ordered beer with some papadam to take the edge off our hunger. Unfortunately, it took 40 minutes to get our meals, which was after two tables who were sat after us got their food...and finished it! There was no checking on us, explanation for the long wait, nothing. My husband finally had to get our server to look into it, and we then got our dishes in a few minutes. Even though the food was good our experience was ruined. A shame, but I can't say I would go back or recommend. read more

We were in Durango for the afternoon and decided to try the Himalayan Kitchen for lunch. We've had Nepalese food previously and enjoyed it. Our service was good. We were seated immediately, orders taken promptly, checked in on, and bill brought and picked up in a timely fashion. The restaurant was clean and the ambiance inviting. The meal began well. We started with samosas and garlic naan. I thought the flavors and textures of both of these were excellent. Things went downhill with our entrees. I saw yak on the menu and had to order that. My partner had salmon. My first couple of bites of yak were super tender. The rest were chewy and unpleasant. But the real issue was how bland it was. Where were those secret spices? My partner felt the same about his salmon. Incredibly bland. Where was the flavor? Did they forget the salt? The spices? We both left pretty disappointed. read more

We ordered takeout. we tried the Sherpa Stew - a thick and rich stew with a wonderful assortment of meats, and vegetables. this was one of the hardiest stews i have ever had. we also had Indian dishes which were prepared to order and were spot on. I knew from the instant I stepped in the door Id found the right spot: This place smells INCREDIBLE! It set a super high bar that the food followed through on. The Sankhuwa Machha was simply amazing. I highly recommend the salmon. We came back the next night and I had the yak meatballs that may have changed my life. They also have an excellent craft beer selection which I very much appreciated. First time here. I was with a group, and had to order quickly. I saw the Lunch Combo (Non-Vegetarian) option so I ordered that. On the menu it is called the non-vegetarian option, but when I said that, the waiter paused, then asked me if I wanted the chicken combo. I thought that was pretty funny. Lovely restaurant and lovely meal! We arrived a little after opening on a Wednesday evening and were immediately shown to a corner table by the window. The restaurant was bright and clean with a full bar near the middle. Our server answered all of our questions, and our food came to the table quickly. My cousin and I each ordered the Himalayan Special Chow-Chow from the specialties menu. We both loved it--it was loaded with chicken, vegetables and just-right noodles. Our servings were so big we could have easily shared one order. She also ordered their secret recipe house iced tea, and loved that, too. I got a glass of reasonably-priced house chardonnay that went well with our noodles. At the Durango Welcome Center, you can find a 50% off coupon and a 10% coupon for their lunch buffet. We took advantage of the 50% coupon, but the prices were reasonable, even without it. read more

Came here with my husband on a Tuesday night around 6:15pm, and they were packed. We waited about 20 minutes for a table. In general, I felt like the service was a little slow. However, our server and the bussers were nice. I started with a hot mug of chai, which was perfect on a cold evening. Not to sweet, which I liked. For food, I got the Aloo Gobi Tarkari from the vegan selection. There were 3 vegan, and 3 vegetarian options. This dish was made with cauliflower and potatoes, in a mild sauce, served over white rice. I liked this dish, but not my favorite thing I've ever had. Next time I would try the saag paneer or Annapurna tofu. My husband got one of the specials, which came with chicken, lamb, and shrimp served over onions. He liked it a lot, since he is a carnivore at heart. We also got a side of garlic naan to split. There was some anise seeds in the naan, which I wasn't used to, and wasn't exactly my taste. For the price, I thought the portions were on the small side. Overall, I would come here again and try another dish. read more

Food review for Himalayan kitchen By Vincent Camire (age 11) Himalayan kitchen is probably one of my favorite restaurants in Durango. It serves extremely homey food and it is fun to eat there. They make some of the best chicken I've ever had and the sauce for their saag is delicious especially when you put it on the buttered naan. Another thing I recommend getting is the Mixed grill platter. It has everything that you want to get at this restaurant, including the delicious chicken and lamb. There is nothing bad to say about this restaurant. For dessert I recommend getting a mango lassi. Himalayan kitchen has that homey mountain feeling that all of us love about Colorado. I haven't been able to fully explore the menu of Himalayan kitchen, but I want to because the food is delicious and I hope you go there and support their business, because it's some of the best food that I've had really ever. It had an okay array of vegetables and was not nutty, despite the warning. Overall boring and somewhat tasteless. Aloo Gobi Tarkari had decent flavor, a little spicy, interesting flavor overall. But it was ruined by salt. Too salty. People who already eat lots of salt may not notice or care. Potato was virtually non-existent. Just cauliflower and sauce. I've been here twice while traveling to Durango and I've had very good experiences both times. I appreciate the variety dishes, particularly the vegan and vegetarian options. They also have a fun selection of beverages, including teas, lassis, cocktails, wine and beer. I am obsessed with their house made chai latte. The second time I returned it was almost exclusively because of the chai. The food is very good and the service is prompt. The staff is friendly and made sure my water glass was always full. I would not say the inside is upscale or fancy, but it is comfortable and welcoming. I'm looking forward to bringing my husband next time he's in town with me as well! read more

We ordered the mo-mo and Yaksha Thenthuk as starters and they were delicious. The dipping sauce that was paired with the mo-mo was packed with yummy spices. It was our first time trying yak meat and we weren't disappointed. This authentic Tibetan dish was savory and flavorful! It was reminiscent of a pot roast. For dinner, we ordered lamb tikka masala. It was a great ending to a perfect meal. Well balanced and filling. The service was phenomenal! The restaurant was packed, and the host was able to find the perfect table for us. Service was great - a little slow picking up our check. I got a Chai Brandy cocktail, it was a new flavor combination for me and I liked it. I don't know if I would do it again though, next time I will try the Chai Martini. The daal had great flavor - not as many lentils as I am used to but like I said before, the flavor was there. There was not much naan that came with the order which was disappointing. Unfortunately, I did not love the chicken tikka masala.
