Melinda and her team saved me from a possible nervous breakdown in trying to figure out how to get health coverage! After going to various websites to do comparisons and trying to translate the information and the fine prints and then having a serious freak out, I had to call a friend. She recommended and then connected me with HIR Agency and Melinda. My friend gave me a heads up that it's open enrollment season so they might be busy. However, HIR Insurance Agency contacted me within a few hours! I knew I wanted to stay with my current provider-- which I now have to pay for on my own--but Melinda gave me the best plan option so that I could afford it on my own. Had I not known about Melinda and HIR Insurance Agency, I would have been added on my partner's health plan so that I don't have to pay a lot for my own insurance. The downside is that he has a different network, where going to my doctor of 15+ years is not an option. Though I am healthy, the thought of having to find new doctors is a pain (amiright?!) and would make me less likely to go for check ups, preventive care, etc. because the search for a "good" doctor, getting them to accept you as a new patient, AND then getting an appointment are additional tasks. I mention these considerations in case you would like to stay with your current provider/network but your our your partner's employer doesn't cover it. Save yourself a headache and go ahead file for insurance yourself. This is the most unorganized agency to the point where you think it's a scam. We went through with Oscar Garcia a broker and when we filed ever documented needed, he claimed our insurance with Blue Shield was active. Turns out that wasn't true when we called blue shield ourselves and took nearly over a month for the insurance of our newborn to be active. It gets worse... When we called blue shield they said that application was under my wife's name (not the newborn) and the agency used my wife's ssn (not the newborn). They filed the wrong information and were impossible to reach for updates regarding the application. When we called about the misfiled information they claimed that they changed the information and should take a couple business days for blue shield to update the application. We then called blue shield once again, having no trust for the agency, and blue shield claimed there was no call to update the information. -.- We ended changing the information ourselves on that same call and it took less than 30 mins on the phone with Blue Shield. We ended getting our ID# and Group ID# from blue shield that day. The following day the agency ended up giving us the ID# and claimed there was no Group ID#... when we did file for group insurance, and received it from blue shield on the phone the day before. Save yourself a headache and don't go through with this agency. They are impossible to reach, unorganized, and lied to us about updates regarding our application. Terrible read more

I'm basing my review on a few things: 1. The agent I was dealing with (Melinda) made a mistake when she provided me my initial quote. The mistake was never acknowledged, there was no apology, and there was no discussion about compensation. In all that "mistake" cost me $372.16 (minimum), several stressful hours on with phone with Blue Shield, and in the end, because the actual quote had increased my premium to a point beyond what I was comfortable with I was forced to cancel a plan that I needed. 2. No one answers the phone at the office. You are expected to leave a voicemail and wait. This office relies on texts and email but in my expereince answers are often delayed beyond what I would expect. This may have been due to open enrollment which is understandably a busy time for them. Check for yourself. ------ details to follow This was my first time working with Hoffman Insurance. I needed two health insurance plans, one for myself and another for my wife and kids and contacted them on 11/26. Melinda, the agent, took my information and quoted my wife and kids @ $889.39 for a Silver 1850 PPO & me @ $780.44 for a Gold 80 PPO. On 11/28 I agreed and requested a 1/1/19 start date. On 12/13, the day before the cutoff date, I was asked to complete an online application for my wife and kids plan which I did the very next morning. I tried and tried but I wasn't able to click through and submit the application; something was wrong with it. I notified Melinda that morning and she said she would try another way on her end. On 12/19 I got a text from someone else in the office asking for payment info for my wife and kids plan. I asked what the charge would be. I was quoted $939.29. I was away on a trip at the time so I didn't have access to the original quote for comparison. Later, when I returned home, I saw that the payment didn't match the original quote that I received from Melinda and amounted to an almost $600 difference for the year. During the next few days (this was during the Christmas holidays) there was some back and forth between the office and I. My entire family ended up on the GOLD 80 PPO and I was faced with a $2,041.99 premium for the month (about $372.16 to $523.24 more than I had expected). Melinda assured me that Blue Shield had told her that I would not be responsible for it. Blue Shield on the other hand insisted that I was responsible and it lieu of this higher premium I was forced to keep my entire family on our original Silver 1850 plan. I tried delaying payment for the overcharge and I filed a grievance with Blue Shield. It was about this time, after looking more closely at the online application, that I learned why there was a difference in what I was quoted originally and what I was being charged. Melinda had mistakenly entered my zip code as 92260 instead of 92660. Up until that point she had said that it was a glitch on the Blue Shield side. Upon making the change and correcting the zip code the issue with the online application was immediately resolved. No glitch here, just human error. Blue Shield eventually rejected the grievance and since I was at risk of having my insurance cancelled for non-payment, I went ahead and paid the difference myself. I emailed Melinda, I expressed how unhappy I was about how everything turned out and instead of getting any acknowledgment from her, I received excuses and was told that it was my fault for cancelling the plan. No acknowledgement of her mistake having set everything in motion. I have since terminated my relationship with Hoffman Insurance and I have submitted a change of agent with Blue Shield. I will search for another agent and try again. P.S. I did deal with someone at the office named Kari who I feel at least tried to smooth things over with Blue Shield. She's the only reason I didn't leave a one star review. read more
