Bought $250 worth of different meats mostly frozen as this was my best value for my money. I had to return a great majority of it and I was grateful that the owner allowed me to buy other fresh meats for the same value. I bought fresh sausage and thought it was going to be ok. It tasted funky, like meat ready to expire, fresh meat does not taste like this. There is a serious issue at this meat market. I wanted to find a local meat market that I could support 4 x/year for $250-$300. The meat market manager needs to be trained when the meat needs to be tossed. I do ALOT of cooking for my family of 5, 4 men and know when the meat is off. I would stay away from this place quite honestly. Makes me sad as I was wanting to support local. read more

I drove down their back alley yesterday and saw a huge disgusting mess left by these guys with dirty used meat bags flying around in the wind and an overflowing garbage bin. Said I would never go back again, but after 2 years of avoiding the place, I thought I would give it another try. NEVER AGAIN. I bought several steaks and a package of pepperonis. The pepperonis were slimy, the same day. I should have taken them back, but didn't. I have been using my air fryer and love the way my steaks cook in it. I tried one of the steaks I bought from Hirsche Meats and it had no flavor. My air fryer had a coating of white fat all around it, looked like lard. Never had this before. The next steak I cooked, had a bit of flavor (I should have taken them back), but within the hour, I had stomach cramps and sat on the toilet. I have learned my lesson. If i could, it would get 0 stars. read more

As someone who really enjoys cooking or grilling a good meal at home, I love this place as my "meat-meal starting point." Why? Hirsche Fraser is a butcher / retail store front for local rancher-raised meats. The people behind the name and operation are well respected: you see the ranch names in the area, and their awards (like from the Calgary Stampede) line the walls of this shop. They supply most of what I'm looking for: natural beef; no steroids or hormones. All beef aged 21 days. Free range chickens sans medicated feed. Local pork and lamb. Fresh, free range turkeys during the various holidays. You get the idea. They also have a lot in terms of homemade items they do themselves, like sausage & meat pies, and they make use of an on-site smoker. They even sell farm fresh eggs. Their website also advertises "meat packages" with assortments of beef cuts and chickens at a discount, so you can load up your freezer in one shot. My typical use, though, is to phone them up and request exactly what I want for a particular occasion. For example, a "boned and rolled" prime rib, which when cooked on my BBQ rotisserie--with a nice rub and hickory smoke--is about the best piece of meat I've ever served up. People rave, so that's my go-to for special occasions. Also, the fresh free range turkey I ordered one Thanksgiving turned out to be perfect as well. The prices are generally higher than the "mystery origin" meat at the grocery store. But it's worth it, in my opinion. And I now have friends and family in Calgary ordering from these guys as well, so I'm not the only one who feels that way. read more

Bought some beef ribs on Saturday, on Wed got them out of the fridge to prepare for my guests. They smelled bad. Threw them out, 3 racks, so 90 bucks worth of food, and ordered pizza, another 50 bucks. Emailed asking for a replacement or a refund, no response, called, the guy was anxious and hostile, said i was a liar, couldn't happen. Told me to bring them in and 'we'd see'. Umm I'm not keeping bad food around, I threw them out. He flipped out, 'you can't do that', he yelled..... I bought 3 chickens at the same time, they were fine, so I'm happy with my fridge. I won't be going back, the food wasn't fresh and the guy is hostile and refuses to compensate. read more

Incompetent, and overpriced. All of their displayed stock is priced 20-30% higher than every other place in town. Same product. I went there to get a custom cut of pork riblets, was quoted as $2.70 per pound, minimum 10 lbs. What I got was pork shoulders with virtually no meat - all fat and bone, and the price jacked to over $44 total. I explained exactly what I wanted, and was rudely told off by someone "who has been cutting meat for 50 years." They screw up your order, jack the price and the become rude instead of admitting to their mistake. Avoid this place if you know what's good for you. You're better off making the trip to Calgary for custom meat. read more
