Visiting Historic Wagner Farm on a gorgeous spring day was a morning well spent! My toddler absolutely loved it here! There were tons of farm animals to see up close, the staff was so incredibly kind, and it was incredibly interactive for all ages. There was a cute little outdoor playground, a building block area and play store inside, and plenty of seating for a snack or picnic lunch. We would most definitely come back on another nice day because my son had a blast! And it's FREE! How lucky are we?

We went here while visiting family in the Chicago suburbs. It was a nice, fun morning with all of our kids (1 year up to 4 years of age). We went on a Saturday so there was a small farmers market going on as well. It was a nice morning for the families looking at animals and playing on the playground.

Are the kids going stir crazy at home? Are they driving you crazy? There's a solution for that! Wagner Farm is a hidden gem in Glenview that has free parking and admission. There are horses, pigs, sheep, chickens, cows, and more to see up close. There isn't an abundance of animals on the farm, but it's plenty to get that farm experience right in the burbs. You'll also see that there are community farming plots being tended to with vegetables and fruit being grown by members of the community. If you have young kids, there is an indoor play area that allows kids to play in a small silo, chalk up a cow, play make believe with toy chicken eggs, and more. Still not enough to convince you? How about ice cream, sundaes, floats, and milk shakes? Yup, they have just the thing to cool you down in the summer. There are plenty of benches, tables, and grass to have a small picnic or just run around. It's so nice that something like this is free and open to the public in the burbs. Definitely a great place to take the family or just walk around and soak in the sun and animals.

This is a good place to spend a few hours looking at animals if you don't want the full zoo experience. You start by taking a team from the parking lot which gives you a mini-guided tour. Once inside the grounds, you can purchase some feed (for many of the animals) and milk bottles (for the goats).

I personally came here for the first time and it was a delightful, fun, and educational visit for all at this historic farm/museum. The driver for this particular visit was their annual dairy breakfast ($10 per adult, $5 per child over 2) and I attended with the daughter and both grand-daughters. They had a breakfast buffet provide by Egg Harbor and as may be expected for anything from EH, the quality was very fresh and good for their pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee, and OJ. Breakfast was enjoyed at communal tables under a tent. Note that you're walking around on grass covered grounds and around a farm. We came on a delightful, sunny 67F day, but I definitely would not want to come here for this event on either a day with wet grounds or a very hot day. After breakfast, we walked around with the kiddos, and visited up close with the standard farm animals - pigs, lambs, chickens, cows, and horses. We also visited a fun historic grocery store replica, an old fashioned ice cream shop, and a corn silo replica. There's plenty to keep kids busy, and it was a great deal and value to enjoy this event.

I researched online before bringing my family out. I wished there was a map or "you are here" board, so we could know where we were allowed to go or what there was to see. We saw chickens, and walked out back to see horses but no one ever explained or approached us. So we guessed what we could do. One house to the north looked like some people went inside? But we weren't sure what that was. The kids did like seeing the cows, pumpkins, and chickens. Overall it was maybe 20 minutes of things to see/do.

I wasn't sure who to reach out to, as I wasn't able to get the wonderful ladies name. She is a middle aged woman with piercing blue eyes and blondish hair. I came in with my 2 autistic kids who were very excited to be outside and around the animals. As autistic children do, they were stimming and making their excited noises.... everyone was staring at us, kids were pointing while their parents just shushed them.... This wonderful mystery woman was heaven sent. There was a tall older gentleman with overalls and a straw hat who was talking about the chicken. She made a point to answer my son's 100 questions regarding the chickens, even though she was just walking by to grab something. Now that I think about it, I think he might introduced her as Farmer Amy. I hope the owners see this review, and know how Farmer Amy's kindness towards 2 children who otherwise would have been left behind, like so many time in the past We will see you all again next week as they can't stop asking to see the " Lady with beautiful eyes with the chickens."

Watching a cow get milked. I believe they do this daily around 4:00pm.

The Evanston Farmer's market not only sells produce but a host of other things. My last visit, I spent nearly 2 hours going through at least 3 dozen vendors. If you're a foodie or a home chef, you will love this place. I found things like specialty pasta from Pasta Pappone, pasta sauce from the River Valley Ranch tent and some beautiful gladiolus stems I sent over to my mom the following day. There are vendors that sell meats and cheese. A few even offer home delivery services. The food vendor line up at this market is also very good and worth checking out. This year Defloured Bakery from Chicago has a tent and they have some of the best gluten free cupcakes in town. I ended up buying a Whoopie pie. If you want to order ahead of time, Defloured accepts pre-orders online for pick up at the market. Their online pre-order menu has more items for sale versus onsite. You would just prepay before picking up your baked goods. A few local restaurants like Gotta B Crepes and Cocina Azteca have set up space so if you get hungry from all the walking those options are readily available. I've tried both restaurants and both are delicious. If you park in the nearby public parking garage next to the Hilton Garden Inn, your parking is free as long as you remember to validate your ticket at the City of Evanston tent on your way out. My only ding on the market (and this might be COVID related) is the lack of seating on the grounds. The Farmer's market page on the City of Evanston website says food can't be consumed on site. So if you plan on eating, you will need to take it to-go. If you are in the area, I would recommend coming to the market at least once for the experience.

I visited the North Branch Market a few weeks ago and this weekend decided to check out the Park Ridge Farmer's Market, and it's another great market. Honestly, I don't get the popularity of something like the Green City Market and though the Lincoln Square Farmer's Market (which used to be my usual) isn't anywhere near as good. There are lots of vendors here. The portion of the market where I entered had a lot of food and goods vendors--pizza truck, ice cream company, bakery, kettle corn, olive oil (there were two!), textiles, soaps & scents, and more. I thought that street was the extent of the market, but when I neared the end I saw that it extends into the parking lot on the street and that section has a lot more. There were at least five different farm operations represented, a man selling meats, and there was a cheese stand as well. It's the height of summer, so I ended up with plums, blackberries, blue cheese and curds, some bread, and a couple other goodies. This market was a really great balance of the Farm in Farmer's market with so many selling here and various other sundries. A four-piece classical quartet serenaded folks as they wandered the market; I assume that the musical entertainment changes from week to week. They had a children's activity booth where this weekend kids were playing with clay with a local artist, and there was a community booth where a local food pantry was collecting donations (the market was also encouraging folks to buy two of an item to donate one to the food pantry). Again, their schedule changes, so I got the impression that the children's activity may be different on different weekends. The market opens early (7 a.m., I think) and the kid's booth starts around 9. Parking is excellent. There's a lot off the street where the market is held with space for a great deal of cars--I think its primary function is as a municipal lot. There's also copious amounts of street parking around as well. If you're in the area on Saturday while the market is in swing, this is a fantastic one you should put on your agenda.
