So it's been over a decade since I've originally reviewed Jerry's, and here we are 13 years and 7 days later and it's about time to update the review. Jerry's is still a gem of a produce store. They still maintain overall the cheapest produce you can find anywhere, and carry some unique produce you might not be able to find at other grocery stores. They also carry a decent variety of breads and pitas, desserts, and canned goods. The good value does come with a price though, as most of the time you'll be battling crowds of people while inside the store. Over the last decade I've definitely learned the times to avoid: Weekends and Wednesdays. Wednesdays I think they might have some sort of senior discount but it's also when they rotate their produce deals and the new weekly specials start. Though they have ample parking in the lots north and south of the store and along Milwaukee, during peak times it will be PACKED. I say avoid by going when they open or even after dinner as they're open pretty late. I find Mondays and Tuesdays to be a little less packed usually. Also, usually they have an entrance facing both North and South but the past few years during the winter time they've only had the South entrance open, I imagine to protect from the cold. read more

We carefully picked a "good" time to drop in here for the first time in well over a decade, mainly to see what the fuss was about with Jerry's. The wife says we came here once before many years ago but I don't remember it.  They've been at it here for 53 years since 1972. Normally, we avoid it due to the madhouse scene that is usually here (like when traffic can't even enter the parking lot from busy Milwaukee Ave because the parking lot is overflowing lol).  Well, it was -3F on a frigid Friday night and we were across Milwaukee Ave at the Jewel, and it was eerily quiet in Jewel, and we thought it was as good a time as any to also visit Jerry's lol. Well, it was relatively calm, and we found a close by parking spot, but there were still plenty of shoppers in Jerry's.  Their inventory is huge and truly impressive as are their prices.  No wonder this place is so super popular.  We picked up some cherries for $2.49 per lb and strawberries at a promo price of $0.79 per 1 lb container.  I would say 4.5 stars for our visit tonight, but really on their normal super-crowded shopping basis, I would still say 3 stars overall.  I don't personally think the hassle factor of shopping here for fruits and vegetables is worth it for the savings and the variety of offerings, thus the 2 star deduct.  But you have to decide for yourself, and apparently for many others, Jerry's is well worth the trip, and kudos to Jerry's for that and continued good luck and success to them. read more

Jerry's, a family-owned produce and garden market, has been around since the early '70s. They are super popular for their competitive pricing on their fruits and vegetables. They have a great selection, and their items are fresh. Great for those who want to buy in bulk and/or for large families and to cook for group get-togethers. Grocery items-wise, it's a bit limited in selection, but it's all about the produce here. The cashiers are super nice, and the check-out is smooth and efficient. My family loves to shop here but it gets crazy busy (inside and in the parking lot) especially on weekends. It's best to go during the week. There's a wide selection of fresh produce and meats and weekly sales. Recently we got Rainer cherries for less than $1/lb! I never went here until recently, despite driving past SO many times! Jerry's has an interesting assortment of fruits, veggies, meat, and other assorted grocery items. Navigating the store is pretty awful and crowded (we're talking about a Friday night around 8pm) with families and all their kids in tow. Prices seem reasonable for average US grown products, but steep for the more exotic imported fruits and veggies (but I guess that's to be expected). Employees here are not friendly at all. I can only imagine they're either poorly paid, overworked, or both. They truly seem miserable while they're working and it shows! I got some fresh okra here and I also got these really cute chocolate mushrooms with breadstick stems (kind of similar to Pocky). Overall, I probably wouldn't come back here unless I was seeking some exotic fruits and veggies. Anything besides that and it's just another grocery store. read more

This market gets a ton of traffic and if you go at the wrong time, you might not find parking. There were so many people when I went on a Sunday afternoon that it almost feels like walking through a crowded bazaar. But I understand why. They have a fantastic selection of produce. My friend in the Chicago suburbs introduced me to this grocery store about a year ago, and I was pleasantly surprised. At first, it reminded me of Joe V's in Houston, which is the budget-friendly version of H-E-B. For context: Central Market is H-E-B's premium line, H-E-B itself is the everyday option (similar to Kroger but better, IMO) and Joe V's is the economical branch. When we first visited Jerry's, the parking lot was packed--finding a space was a challenge. Even before stepping inside, you'll see discounted produce lined up outside the entrance. Once inside, it feels chaotic, almost like a madhouse, with carts and people everywhere. But if you can remind calm and navigate the crowds, the prices are worth it--especially compared to Madison or Milwaukee. Jerry's often sells products near their expiration date at steep discounts. For example, I spotted Toblerone chocolate for just $2, when the same bar cost 6 Swiss francs during our trip to Switzerland last year. Their produce deals are also excellent: huge Black Diamond watermelons for $4 (and they're super sweet), bags of 10 avocados for $5, and yellow dragon fruit for only $3/lb. At one point, we even found cherries for $0.99/lb--not the biggest, but sweet and perfect for things like jams. Overall, Jerry's has been a pleasant surprise. Despite the crowds and hectic atmosphere, the savings and produce quality keep us coming back about once a month. It's a long drive but this is our weekend getaway. read more

Small grocery in Niles that is super popular (there's always a ton of people here). But it's easy to see why: Their prices are fantastic. I stopped in last night to get a head of lettuce and left with that plus red bell peppers, apples, rapini, and so on. Since it's small I assume that the aisles can get crowded pretty quickly. My bill for three bags of groceries--all fruit and vegetables--was $20. They sell more than produce, brut that's a big chunk of their space (probably about half the store). There's plenty of parking here since we're out in the suburbs at this point. read more

Well, I have been going to Jerry's for decades. They can be hit or miss sometimes. Well today was a treasure find. The Ozblu blueberries were very nice indeed. The hottest item is..... the King's River Navel Oranges, juicy and very sweet... delicious! If you get a chance pick up these two treats while supplies last. My compliments to the new produce buyer(s) KEEP up the good work! These two items are superb!!!!! read more

Okay, I get the hype. Jerry's has the best assortment of produce I've seen in the area, and the best prices on them by far. It's like walking through an indoor farmers market. Once you get beyond the array of fruits and veggies they are a big Asian market, European market, and big Mexican market all squished into a tiny space. It's crowded, it's noisy, it's chaotic. Service is hit or miss. Sometimes the staff is in your way more than the other shoppers, and the other shoppers will definitely be in your way. You'll also be in their way. So I give Jerry's five stars for prices and assortment and deduct a star for the staff, the tiny aisles, and the chaos. Others may enjoy the excitement, but I prefer a more sedate shopping experience. Next time I'll try it on a weekday morning, that may improve my rating. read more

I know Jerry's is a popular market, but they should train their associates properly with manners. I went to the shop today (10/5/2024), but there was a lady who was putting items in the cashier, she was extremely rude. She puts every items in one bag (I bought cabbage, onions, carrots and other heavy items etc.), did not evenly distributed the items. It feels like she puts my items in the bag like garbage. She even puts egg and cabbage together, and other bags were like onions, apples all in same bag and handle of the bag was almost about to rip off. I had bad experiences with Jerry's previously where they put all things together ended up bag got ripped off even before I arrived at my house. I asked the lady nicely for 2 extra bags, and she said no. So I said to the lady that she put too much heavy stuffs all at once, and her reply was "no" and gave only one bag. I think her English was not so fluent, but since I need the bag, I got extra bag from other cashier, but that rude lady came up to me and took the bag away from me without saying anything, and it was extremely ridiculous and I felt very disrespected and discriminated. I don't want many bags Jerry's bags are horrible, all I want is to have at least even distribution so that way my stuffs stays in the bag safely, and does not fall off due to the broken bag before I arrive at my house. This is my favorite grocery store in the Chicagoland area. Decent size shop with fresh fruits and vegetables at very low prices. They are packed during weekends and evenings but weekdays or early mornings are easier to navigate. They have meats, fruits and vegetables that cater to different ethic groups. read more

This review does not affect opinion of the staff or products within the store. This review deals with the horrible location & small store and bad layout. 1. Staff - 5 stars. Nice cashiers and all staff are properly uniformed and masked. Staff appear extremely busy to near overloaded. 2. Arrival and Parking - 0 stars - The entryway to the parking lot is where all convenience disappears. Once you enter the parking lot you are facing a Walmart crowd over a small family shop. 3. Layout & store physical appearance - 1 star - This layout is shopper friendly during a non pandemic time but during a pandemic is extremely prone to clogging and having social distancing violations. Many people could not socially distance due to the unreasonable crowding within the store. The store is unremarkable and unchanged from years ago, stability in design is a good thing, except in a pandemic where the shop is crowding, social distancing is failing to be enforced and people are having to cut shopping trips short to avoid panic attacks (I had to walk out after grabbing a few things) Exiting the stores parking lot isn't enjoyable either, few people follow traffic markings / there aren't enough traffic control devices I.e stop signs / yield signs. I would consider this store during a non pandemic time for a visit during off peak hours but during a pandemic and at any time, shop elsewhere unless you want to possibly put your psychiatric and or physical health at risk. I feel like I'm going to need a COVID test after going in this store! read more

Okay disclaimer! They should call Jerry's a club because it is ALWAYS packed with people!! Either get there once they first open or when they are close to closing and avoid weekends at all costs! It's very cheap, I don't even live around the area but will travel for cheap produce. The meats are cheap as well! I suggest for the fruits to chop them up and freeze them so they don't spoil as quickly especially if you are buying large quantities! read more

Jerry's is known for their great prices. The problem though is that the fruits and vegetables that they sell is poor quality as they tend to get spoiled relatively quickly in comparison to other grocery stores. The store is always overcrowded. Employees and shopping carts are constantly blocking the aisles. The store layout is poorly designed as it doesn't allow shoppers to maneuver around with ease. The parking lot is always conjested as it is always hard to get in and out of. This store is not worth the headache. read more

Things I love about Jerry's Fruit & Garden are the prices that can't be beat anywhere. I went shopping there today and bought about $39 dollars worth of Jerry's Priced Food. These same groceries would probably cost $70 - $90 dollars @ Jewel or Mariano's The things I hate about Jerry's Fruit Market are the morons that shop there. The store is usually a zoo and trying to navigate the aisles with the morons that leave their carts in the middle of the aisle and sort through the produce blocking the aisle. I have tried getting there when they open @ 8am only to find people lined up outside waiting for the store to open. I found the best time to go shopping is later in the evening after 8pm to avoid the crowds. Still Jerry's can't be beat price wise for most of their produce and meats. I basically bought my dinner @ Jerry's today. I had been a loyal shopper at Stanley's Produce on Elston in the city until they closed several years ago. I searched for a "new" Stanley's and found Jerry's in Niles! I love this store and do more and more of my full grocery shopping there -not just produce-only anymore. As others have mentioned, the store is very busy weekday late afternoons/evenings and weekends, I've found weekday mornings to be the least busy time to shop. read more

The crown jewel of Niles. Yes it's a diamond in the rough but a rare gem nonetheless. Yes, the parking lots are always congested. Okay, yes, the aisles in the market are always jam packed and it feels like shopping on Black Friday. But was it all worth it? Yes. The prices are worth it. I always try to buy local if possible. If I knew of more farmers markets I'd go to them but Jerry's is the next best option. They've been family owned for almost 50 years and they claim to buy local and direct. Hopefully their prices are indicative of this enough. Most of the produce and meat my family buys from here is fresh and in great condition. Theremll be a bad apple here or there, but I haven't yet gotten any kind of major issues since shopping here for the past few years. Don't be fooled by the marketing schemes of Whole Foods and bigger chains. Come through Jerry's and support local. Tips: Bring some reusable bags and if you grab a shopping cart, grab a basket too to give you a little more flexibility if you need to walk down an aisle that's too crowded for your cart read more

I live this little produce store! Every time when I go there I get back home with a full shopping cart with fresh fruits and vegetables, imported chocolates and the most delicious Persian bread I have ever ate in my life. I travel one hour by public transport to get there. I wish they had a store somewhere in the city of Chicago so I can shop there more often. So much more affordable than shopping in those big store chains! I will keep shopping in Jerry's Fruit and Garden regardless of the long commute. I often find myself walking out with a large grocery cart filled with of stuff for less than $40. Where can you say that these days. Please pay attention to the name of this grocery store, "Jerry's Fruit & GARDEN." It really is a one-stop shop for fresh veggies, fruit, bread, poultry, and perhaps seafood (if you don't mind majority of the fish is sold frozen). The first part of the store is literally a garden, but a narrow and crowded one. It was difficult to maneuver with everyone's buggy and basket. I didn't know how many times I had to say "excuse me...can I get over there? Thank you." However, the prices for fresh produce were kind of ridiculous. I know apples are out of season now for a couple of months, but they had a good selection of them for $0.89/lb. Based on my visual inspections on the condition of most fruit, they were ripe and needed to be consumed ASAP. "Jerry's Fruit & Garden" is analogous to "Stanley's" on Elston/North Ave. in the city. But JF&G has ample parking and features other departments so that it's more appropriate to be called a supermarket. I will have to upgrade my small- to medium-sized grocery bags to a large grocery cart. PACE #270 bus drops right off at Jerry's. Well, please be mindful that you will most likely over-spend due to their low prices, just go ahead drive your own vehicle. read more

I've been coming here off and on for a while. I've never reviewed bc I wanted to keep it for myself haha. I have a love hate relationship with this place. I love that everything is so cheap. I hate how crowded it is. I gladly make the 20 minute trip for some produce tho!!! They have all kinds of goods here. Things I've never heard of and things I'm afraid to try. I wish they would get rid of the dry good section and make the whole place produce. That would be amazing. And maybe help the place be less crowded bc no one goes in the canned good aisles anyways. The best part is my produce doesn't go rotten the next day after purchasing from here. One down side is the last time I came here I bought a pineapple and it took my like three days to actually cut and peel it and my kitchen had fruit flies. Wth I never had any until that pineapple. Jerry's takes a determined person to shop there because the parking lot is usually very busy all day lines with lots of shoppers. There is a main aisle and you pull you cart off it left or right to pick your veggies. It's crowded and if you forget something you've passed up it's hard going backwards in this store. BUT, I love it. They have everything from herbs and spices to meats, fish, and fruit and veggies and European baked goods. The prices are great and it's the best place to get fresh everything because of the amount of people shopping there every day. read more

I gotta say that the produce at Jerry's is fresh and plentiful. I mean sure you have to carefully pick out your produce like you would anywhere else but that's just the nature of things. As well, they have a large selection of imported goods from most ethnicities. The staff is helpful, familiar with the store items and fairly knowledgeable and managers walk around and check things out as shoppers do what they do. All in all it's solid with great produce and variety of items and excellent prices. Very reasonable. I like Jerry's The down side is, yeah there is one and it's not on management at all, the patrons are out of control, completely insane. Jerry's is like every every old battle ax from every nation in the world converged on one store and is battling it out for supremacy. The UN gone bad. I spied more than one old lady pushing her hubby around. I mean this place is like evacuating Saigon and everyone is trying to get a seat on the last helicopter, the 1980 Cuban boat lift landing in Miami, a Middle Eastern war zone. It's Mad Mad Beyond Thunder Zone shit going on here, even 10,000 soccer moms at a Back Street Boys concert. TOTAL CHAOS! I was busted up when I left here I may need trauma counseling. My shopping cart was banged into like 20 times from the front door to the checkout line. There is a slow crawling shopping cart train from the moment you enter the store so you better look fast, grab what you can and keep moving because, believe me you, there is NO turning around. Only a complete screwball would even attempt to. I mean these old ladies made mince meat outta me and they never batted an eye while doing it or had a hair outta place on their babushka. I probably got a half dozen 'evil eyes', and at least three curses placed on my. These old birds are a rough crew and no one understands each other so no arguing is going on just bumper cart battles. I had to hide out in the frozen fish isle for a few minutes just to stop sweating and collect myself. Somehow, the staff manages to keep this place super clean amidst the madness. Most mainstream grocery chains aren't as clean as Jerry's considering all the produce being tossed around, fingered, squeezed like a roll of Charmin', punched, and rummaged through. This staff deserves a gold star and a raise. Jerry's is great, BUT, do not enter if you're pressed for time or are weak at heart. Jerry's ain't for sissies! Bring some padding too I just dug out my old football pads for the next visit. When I got home I closed my shades and locked my doors! But on the bright side I got some great produce and saved a ton of dough. read more

Some of the prices are great but the store layout and being able to maneuver a cart is awful. The workers are everywhere clogging the aisles during peak times, and you are trapped by the one way action thru the produce section and the meat section is a joke. One cart in that area and NO ONE can even get to counter to view meat. I have been twice and it's about a 25 minute drive for me. Savings a few cents on produce isn't quite worth the hassle, the crowd, the poor layout, and general congestion. I shop produce each week at about 7 different stores for an animal sanctuary...some of Jerry's price are good, but overall not competitive enough for the hassle. read more

This is my absolute favorite place for grocery shopping. The fruits and vegetables are hands down the best pricing. I never want to go anywhere else. How much should a pack of strawberries be? JERRY'S sells them for 3lbs for $1. Rainier Cherries...$0.79 / lb!! Come on now...love Jerry's. I'd even battle thru the usual weekend mosh pit that is Jerry's to get my fruit on. Tip, come late at night, it'll still be busy, but at least you could breathe. Jerry's reminds me of a crowded fruit/vegetable market in Asia. I love the prices here at Jerry's!! Food spoils rather quickly. Prices are pretty cheap, and the place is always super-crowded. Pro-tip: Come here during the weekdays/nights and you can avoid the crowds. I came here on a Wednesday near closing, and the place was empty... like my soul. The prices are pretty good My main gripe is that fruit here is not the best of quality. What attracted me to come here on this, and a few other occassions was the sales. They had an unheard of, four 1lb packages of strawberries for $1. It was hard to even get one package, because every single package on the shelf had moldy strawberries in it. I see this is common in past experiences too, and I get it -- sales are to get rid of old inventory, but give us a chance to get some decent fruit. I've also noticed that in several occassions, the fruit and produce that I bought, got moldy and bad a lot quicker than say, groceries from Jewel or FreshFarms. I could buy strawberries or fruit from FreshFarms and they last over a week before being spoiled. Not so much with the produce from Jerry's. So if you aren't a bachelor or single person who takes over a week to eat your fruits, vegetables, and groceries, this all may be a moot point. But for people like me, I need stuff that lasts at least 4-5 days from purchase. I'll still go back for the sales, but will have to make it a point to finish/consume them within a day or so, or throwing out moldy strawberries is just a waste of money for me. Also, as mentioned before, this place gets super busy during the weekends; the aisles are extremely narrow and it's like navigating the Taste of Chicago at its peak and can get extremely annoying. So definitely come during the weekdays, if you can. read more

Crazy packed and crowded on the weekends but if you enjoy that hustle and bustle, come on over! The produce is pretty darn cheap and the meat can be a good deal as well. You can even buy things at wholesale if you want. It serves a diverse community and therefore has diverse products that I've never seen before without marketing itself as an "international" grocery store. read more

The only good thing about this place are the prices for their produce, for which some you can buy in bulk for real cheap. Which, in my experience, I have found to be lacking in quality. Other than that, this place, to me at least, is a nightmare. This place is always PACKED. Its like you're having a shopping cart war with other shoppers to just move down the quite tight aisles. I generally don't like to move other people's carts, but here I have to constantly pick them up to move them out of the way since people like to leave them sitting in the center of the aisle. And parking here is horrendous. Good luck finding a spot. I like the prices here, and solely based on that is the reason I'll continue to patronize this place. But go during times when the amount if shoppers is fewer, like early morning or late at night. read more
