My workweek is a blur. Between meetings and school drop-offs, our family dinners are a team effort…read moreand usually something quick: air fried chicken, a salad, and fruit. Swap in a different protein each day and you get the gist. Simple, functional, done. But weekends? Weekends are for flavor. That is when I pull out a Japanese cookbook from Mitsuwa or cue up one of those beautifully shot YouTube recipe videos I have saved. The kids rally around, ready to help and ready to veto anything green I might try to sneak in. We read the recipe, make a list, and head to the Saturday farmers market. Open from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, May 10 through October 11, the Arlington Heights Farmers Market is where all my plans unravel in the best possible way. Baby eggplants too cute to leave behind. Crisp pickling cucumbers. Potatoes still dusted with dirt. Peaches so fragrant they announce themselves from a stand away. Sour cherries with a perfect bite. Heirloom tomatoes I did not know existed but now dream about. Basil that perfumes the car ride home. Cherry preserves with no sugar. Lavender honey from bourbon barrels. And I have not even mentioned the cheese. The shopping list goes out the window. Imagination takes the wheel. Dinner becomes an adventure and a memory. If you love food, cooking, or just need a little inspiration, this place speaks your language. The language of romance, but with vegetables.

(Palatine used to be a bigger draw for me due to the variety and choices, but AH has caught up!) I particularly love the baguettes from St. Roger's Abbey. The nun selling the bread is a fluent French speaker and I've overheard several French-only conversations with customers. My French is quite pathetic so I just say, "Bonjour!' and "Oui!" This is also a great place to get your fresh produce, cheese, and coffee needs filled. It is conveniently located next to the Memorial Library, so you can check out some books and then get some produce, bread, and coffee. The AH Farmer's Market is a nice way to kick off the weekend in my opinion.

Stumbled across this store after a UPS return of what else... an online order, maybe? Lol…read more.. So I love Amish products, they seem so legit and "farmers market" without the hipster markup, amirite? So this new place was initially very intriguing and unusual... I think this storefront used to be a pre-prepped meal kit place, like the home delivery stuff being sold now over socials... Anyway, the store seems more like a eastern euro (Polish?) Business reselling Amish items. Prices seem well below retail on the few items they carry but produce and such fresh items are only passable and look to have seen better days. Dairy, bread and canned goods are interesting. Due to lack of preservatives the daily baked bread seems to go stale by end of day, so I got the inexpensive French mini loaf tossed in for free. Was planning on Air fryer toasting that into crostini anyway... so score. The drop in a star was due to the iffy customer service. Older lady needs to down some sugar and not shoot dour looks at me, not the best impression on a new customer..., the other lady seemed friendlier but should probably chill on long convos in Polish while a customer is standing at the register to checkout. Might be back, next time I'm in the strip mall for curiosity... but Woodman's has Amish items too.

I visited the North Branch Market a few weeks ago and this weekend decided to check out the Park Ridge Farmer's Market, and it's another great market. Honestly, I don't get the popularity of something like the Green City Market and though the Lincoln Square Farmer's Market (which used to be my usual) isn't anywhere near as good. There are lots of vendors here. The portion of the market where I entered had a lot of food and goods vendors--pizza truck, ice cream company, bakery, kettle corn, olive oil (there were two!), textiles, soaps & scents, and more. I thought that street was the extent of the market, but when I neared the end I saw that it extends into the parking lot on the street and that section has a lot more. There were at least five different farm operations represented, a man selling meats, and there was a cheese stand as well. It's the height of summer, so I ended up with plums, blackberries, blue cheese and curds, some bread, and a couple other goodies. This market was a really great balance of the Farm in Farmer's market with so many selling here and various other sundries. A four-piece classical quartet serenaded folks as they wandered the market; I assume that the musical entertainment changes from week to week. They had a children's activity booth where this weekend kids were playing with clay with a local artist, and there was a community booth where a local food pantry was collecting donations (the market was also encouraging folks to buy two of an item to donate one to the food pantry). Again, their schedule changes, so I got the impression that the children's activity may be different on different weekends. The market opens early (7 a.m., I think) and the kid's booth starts around 9. Parking is excellent. There's a lot off the street where the market is held with space for a great deal of cars--I think its primary function is as a municipal lot. There's also copious amounts of street parking around as well. If you're in the area on Saturday while the market is in swing, this is a fantastic one you should put on your agenda.

I saw an assortment of produce, artisan goods, local businesses, flowers, cheeses, canned/jarred goods, meats, and more! The market was a decent size and runs on Saturdays from 7am-1pm. I also loved that they had some food trucks theres to offer a good beverage or bite to eat as you peruse! Definitely try to stop by early to ensure nothing is sold out!
