Obstacles, mud, water, ropes, wood, hills, valleys, and tires, oh my!…read more This is my second time doing this race, and lemme tell you--the first time was brutal, but this second time that I did the race was even worse! There were 100 obstacles this time around, as well as a 5-mile (total) race on rocky/hilly/sandy terrain. I've done other races before (marathons, half marathons, the Scorpion Warrior, and the Camp Pendleton Mud Run, in addition to the last Rhino Race) and hands down, this is the hardest race I've ever done YET! And no, I'm not just saying that cuz I also happened to see an ambulance cart off some poor guy that ruptured his Achilles while attempting one of your obstacles (and happened to see someone else carted off during the last race that I participated in). I'm saying it cuz I mean it! There were upside down ladders, running up and down hills/canyons, an "elevator shaft" where you had to move up from the bottom to the top and climb down when you finished, tire hurdles, a balance beam, a seesaw, monkey-bars/ropes, a rope suspended over a puddle of water, cargo nets, logs, tires, and some obstacles where you had to do lateral jumps/hurdles. This is in addition to the rope swing, and the numerous rope obstacles + vertical walls (90 degree incline or 45 degree incline). The punishment for not completing the obstacle 100% correctly or skipping one? 10 burpees without a push-up, 5 with a push-up. Oh, and did I mention that there are three categories: mainstream, extreme (1 lap around), and extreme endurance (as many laps around as you want for 9 hours total). I'm sure that I missed out on some of the obstacles, but I apologize. My brain and body are taking a beating from the race that I ran today. Lol. So, if you DO decide to take on this race, make sure that you're prepared to wait for obstacles if you sign up at a later time. Otherwise, go early (competitive heats) and feel free to wear your crazy/interesting costume if you want. I actually saw some gymnasts/acrobats doing the race in tutus. Wow. I also recommend that you have some really good gloves (that fully cover your hands), since I came up with a few splinters this time around. A special shout out to the volunteers that helped put together this event, especially when it came to motivating us racers, as well as directing us, helping us sign our lives away via waivers, giving us our gear/checking in our bags, and finally providing us with water when necessary. I also am thankful for the smoothies provided by Tropical Smoothie King (for a small donation), and that someone took advantage of my beer ticket afterwards. I also liked the fact that there was an area for the kids to play in, with their own version of the obstacles. I'm excited to see what you guys have in store for us next time around, and I definitely know that the race is no joke. The three shirts that I have and two Rhino Course coins are serious proof. Honestly, the best $45 I've ever spent to get my @$$ kicked on a Saturday. Keep up the good work!

They of course start in the first wave and finish the 5miles 100 obstacles in like 5 minutes so that they can help others (Kidding about the 5 minutes, but dang he was flying). I have done marathons and Tri's and I have to say this is the racing that I want to be doing and I am loving it in my own backyard. Congrats crew on a job well done.

To keep things interesting out here in the desert, look out for a couple of artistic animal duo structures: the Tortoise & the Hare and Wile E. Coyote & the Road Runner. This trail is not quite a straight shot. There are several major crosswalks/intersections where you'll need to stop and press the crosswalk button. Nevertheless, it's a pretty safe and flat course. If need to take a break, there are several shaded benches, and many smaller uncovered ones made of granite along the way. Plenty of pet waste stations, too. The St Rose Parkway Trail is great multi-use trail, such as biking, running, walking, and inline skating, and is also wheelchair accessible. The trail serves as a connection to 12 different parks and other trailheads, all managed by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Dept. Other than the trail itself, what I like most about this path are the businesses conveniently located off of the trail, like Starbucks! Also, it's neat to see this area grow with new and upcoming stores like Hobby Lobby and In-N-Out! The starting point (Mile 0) is near M casino, the south end of St. Rose Pkwy. It terminates just before I-215. There are many places to park off of St Rose Pkwy. But, the published places are Siena Heights Trailhead (2570 Siena Heights Drive) and Cactus Wren Park (2900 Ivanpah Drive) for restrooms and parking. Get outdoors now before it gets too hot in the summer!

Pavement under my Nikes, butterflies roam free surrounding me…read more Every time I make contact with the pavement the balance grows every constantly inside me! This beautiful trail has markers that indicate when it's time to go. The starting line uses the fairy tale the Tortoise and the Hare as a whimsical way to roam and explore. You can run, run, run as the hare did and finish in a flash, or pace yourself such as the wise tortoise did. After you get started down the trail look along the way for information booths that mention about the wildlife that calls this area home. The best rich flavors of flora and fauna along this four miles breathtaking. The views of the mountains on the other side of the interstate 15 just rise up to meet the sky. As the sun sets on these mountains every day the next morning the sun shines and stretches her rays across the desert floor to rise and meet the day. Butterflies constantly fly around me as I run on the pavement. Their renewals of hope and happiness continue to fill me with hope that their presence brings joy. As I continue to transform the butterflies presence inspires me to trust that all is going to be coming up rainbows and butterflies. The delicate wings of the butterfly as it flutters close so delicate. That ever present tipping in nature that with all the beauty around us we are all guests that share this wonderful place together. Up close to a butterfly as I bend down to admire its beauty. The wings flutter on air up and down. Looking at the butterfly oh so close she closes her wings and blends into the concrete. The Royal monarch of this butterfly goes white as she disguises herself from me. I would never capture the wild monarch she is truly wild and free. As she delivers her message of hope and divine happiness I leave knowing that I have witnessed a message from beyond. Answers come in all meanings, butterflies have been known to be the messengers of fairies and angels to deliver these messages. Henderson, NV is the lovely city that wants "you" to go outside. Log those 10,000 steps a day. Get that heart healthy. These created paths are low impact to the eco system surrounding it. The creatures that call this area home are still safe with their habitat not too engrossed on. "Leave nature as you found it." While this created path was a beautiful addition that starts at the M Hotel and Casino it circles around and ends at St. Rose Hospital. A four mile trek with wildlife and trash bins all along the path. Make sure the wild coyotes stay here, and those cute little bunnies do not end up as your pet. They are truly cute and cuddly from afar, could pose a risk if you get too close to them. Your empty water bottles and trail mix bags deposit those in these trash bins as needed. Please be careful playing in the desert, she is unrelenting and surreal. Drink plenty of water and enjoy your created paved bliss. Deep within our psyche is this abyss that holds all of our dreams and passions. This liquid pool needs revival once in awhile. We are meant to be in tune with nature. Nurture that bond once in a while with the wild wonderful beautiful surrounding us. Go outside! Unplug your headphones and run on that pavement with the noises of nature surrounding you as you are part of its cycle. The balance of being in tune with nature, for it is our cycle of being. It's the reasons for why, and all of our doubts. Know sometimes we have to embrace the universe accept its gifts and enjoy its happiness that it has planned for you. Once in a while these gears need to be fixed and honed to make sure that it's functional. Run, jump, leap and enjoy this big whole wide world. Takes us about 3 hours or less to do the whole loop around…read morethe mountain for the Petroglyph trail as they're still building out the parking lot center so starting from the road. We were lucky enough to spot a bighorn sheep in the distance at the very top of one of the mountains! Wear hiking shoes for the rocky terrain and a hat for the no shade. Recommend to start early at 8 am min. if you do the whole loop. It's cool to see all the Petroglyphs! There's not a lot but enough on the walls in a certain section of the trail.

Lots of things changed at home. One needs to get back and kin with nature. Being out side is where "one" feels most alive . It's time to start a new journey and chapter of change in life. This particular piece of protected land is located in my backyard, per say . One might ask, hiking trails that are in the desert. Why would one even consider hiking here? It's too hot! It's just dust and rocks! Why? Actually, at one time this was a thriving community, it's a protected community for all to enjoy and come see petroglyphs from Ancient individuals that once called this area home. This area in an inactive volcanic region. It's dormant for now. In the after effects of a volcano eruption or activity it leaves fertile soil that can yield lots of crops with little effort. The lava that flowed under the ground in tubes can provide shelter for those that once called this area home. Many residents of days past have lived close to volcanos that have gone dormant. The natural resources can be used and the heat keeps the area warm enough naturally. If you are able to keep taking the trail all the way around and look around you will see petroglyphs. This hike is about six miles all the way around . Make sure and start early it's an amazing glance into the past . The mountain hug you as you climb and crawl over water falls from the past. It's an incredible experience. It's the journey and how you experience and explore. Get out and enjoy life . Don't let life pass you by. Make each day special. Nature is beautiful and it has been preserved from the past for generations to see

Lost Creek Children's Discovery Trail is inside the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area…read morewhich is about 21 miles from downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. USA, baby! Not a five star experience for the simple fact that the trail was not clearly marked. I mean, come on, this was created for children. Adults need to be present, but I'm the kind of parent that encourages my kids to figure out stuff on their own. Kind of hard when there are areas that look like the trail, but they weren't. For that matter, snap a photo of the map before you head down the 0.6 mile loop. Other than that, the trail is super easy for active kids. Mine hustled me through it in about 30 minutes. Lol. The elevation does not get incredibly steep, but if you're carrying other children it might get slightly to moderately difficult for a short while. Nothing too dangerous. My kiddos loved walking over the boardwalk, pretending to be mountain lions in a cave-like area, staring up at the colorful rocks, throwing rocks in the dry arroyo, reading some of the trail info, and pretending to slide down a slick bedroom-sized rock formation. The waterfall and creek was bone dry when we were there on 6/8/21. The weather was in the upper 90s. Parking is free and plentiful with your pass into Red Rock. There are restrooms near the lot.

I was looking for a good hiking trail that was kid friendly, and I stumbled upon this. It is located in the Red Rock conservation area. There is an entrance fee of $10 per vehicle. Which isn't bad since it is 13 miles of scenic drive/area. We definitely enjoyed this hike.It took us about an 1hr to 1 1/2hr to finish the trail, and that was with our little boy and our puppy. We only took one snack break, and our little boy walked most of it (with a little bribery with a lollipop ). The hike has enough shade, so it wasn't too hot. I love how it wasn't too steep, so it wasn't scary for our little one. The hike had enough scenery, and we definitely enjoyed it. I heard there's a small waterfall, and pond, but we weren't able to see it due to it being dried out. Lots of trees and plants for kids to see and enjoy. Just like any hike. Bring a backpack with snacks and water, wear sunscreen, and comfortable shoes and clothing. It is such a super easy hike. We will definitely do this again.

The Glo Run was held Downtown on October 14th and took place in the evening. I believe the race started at 8PM. Participants were dressed for the part - tutus, colorful wigs, and creative/skimpy attire were all the rage. The pre-party was held at the Commonwealth. Background music consisted of, you guessed it, EDM! The finish line featured a stage with a DJ. Giant beach balls were being tossed around in the crowd and confetti bursts were being launched. I truly had a lot of fun. I'm hoping the Glo Run will happen in 2015 because I would love to participate again. I paid around $35 for registration, which included a tshirt. Good music, positive vibe, lots of lights/ neon, happy people, rainbows, tutus, fairy wings, balloons, wigs, I got a bunch of freebies: glow-in-the-dark bands, Glow Run t-shirt, snacks, etc. I think I paid $35 or $45 for early registration with a student discount. I got to burn calories, have a good time and support AFAN. There were runners of different ages. Some ran with their costumed babies on a stroller. Little girls passing me. LOL. All had fun. The weather tonight was just right. It wasn't hot out. They had water stations, I'd like to say, at every mile. Before I knew it, I've already completed the 7k. I'd do this again!
