11/23/12 Dinner I have never heard of the town Casmalia until I came to the Hitching Post. The restaurant is like a barn in the middle of nowhere. We had to wait for about 10 minutes even though we showed up ontime for our 7pm reservation. This place is hopping. We both had 8 oz filet mignon ($37), cooked medium. I appreciate their menu which contains a guideline to how we wanted the steak cooked. In the city, my steak is usually a tad more cooked than I asked. At the Hitching Post the filet mignon was cooked to perfection, red right in the middle. They cooked meat on the oak pit, BBQ style, so the meat is tender and juicy. All meals came with a shrimp cocktail, which is a bit too sweet with the tiny shrimps swimming in the cocktail sauce. You can choose between mixed greens salad, potato salad or grilled vegetables in a skewer. Ranch dressing was house-made. Fries were slim cut and crunchy. Garlic bread is tasty, not not crispy enough. I paired my steak with a glass of the Hitching Post pinot noir. The sumptuous meal was followed by vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. Decor is homey with lots of antlers and cow heads ensconced on the wall. The restaurant is decked in its Christmas glory. Service is friendly but not the most attentive. Meat is definitely the highlight here. They have one chicken entree and one fish entree. I highly recommend you try one of the steak options. read more

Came with a group of people for a celebration. I gave this place a second chance and was impressed with the improvements that I saw. My rack of lamb came out a perfect medium rare and had a perfect amount of seasoning on it. They improved on that god-awful shrimp cocktail--it's now a much better product with larger, fresher shrimp and a balanced homemade cocktail sauce on top. No more ketchup on the shrimp! Everyone else's dinners came out great. Service was on-point. We noticed that our $60 bottle of Highliner was a 2009 on the menu, but we were given a 2012. Inquired with the waitress and she gave us 20% off the wine for the misrepresentation-no questions asked and didn't make us feel weird about it. Honestly, I wasn't expecting a good experience. The manager had contacted me off of my last review in May and offered to mail me a gift card for the feedback. She said that my feedback will be incorporated in their move to improve on some of the dishes. The gift card never came. Man OH MAN! that STEAK was good! I stopped into town from Los Angeles for a launch viewing at the Air Force Base, and for a small BBQ joint, I was blown away. The steak that I ordered (bone-in rib chop) was incredible. more on that later. The service was on point. I was surprised, because on the surface, this restaurant seems like a casual Cowboy joint. the servers ensured that each and every dish that came with our party's respective meals were timed and staged in such a way that nothing was waiting to be touched. the next "course" (salad, cocktail, entree, dessert) arrived as empty dishes were being swept away. major brownie points on dining experience there. I initially balked at the prices, but that is my own misjudging. they really care about the quality of their meat, the way they cook, and the server here. The dining experience really made for a perfect vehicle for the meal. The STEAK: Delicious. Luis, the master behind the grill here made sure that everyone's steak (different cuts, sizes and weights) were done at the same time. they were perfectly seasoned and charred on the outside, done to a perfect medium rare for mine and a buddy, and medium well for another member of our party. The flavor didn't mask any of the "beefiness" of the steak at all. Subtle enough for the quality of the meat to really shine, yet present and accounted for when tasted. I preemptively asked for steak sauce. Big mistake, because it wasn't needed! I even dabbed a little bit of steak into it. It actually made it worse! The side dishes/accompanying (salad, shrimp cocktail, garlic bread, ice cream, and coffee) were acceptable, but this place really is about their meat. Made reservations since we were going to be in town, and finally arrived (quite a hike from Santa Maria!). Matt (the manager Saturday night) greeted us and sat us in the back corner area. In one way we were way in the back, the other ... it was quieter than the rest of the restaurant (a little lively in sound level). We did get seated next to the window with a ring side seat of the grill operations. This restaurant is 100% better than Hitching Post II! This is one well oiled machine. Different waitresses for Drinks, Food, other people bringing water, etc. The service was great. I ordered the Filet, my wife the Sirloin, and lots of things come with - Relish tray / breadsticks and crackers on table - old school, but I like it - Shrimp Cocktail - tiny shrimps, with cocktail sauce and chopped celery ... can do without this. - Salad - Good and fresh. - Sides - We got veggies (they were grilled skewers! One of the best steaks I've ever eaten! After driving in the middle of nowhere and losing my cell service, I was wondering if the food here would really be worth it. Advertising the "Best BBQ in America," the Hitching Post is a cozy restaurant with a part diner ambiance, part country house environment. I ordered a ribeye, and also sampled the bbqed artichoke. The meal was accompanied by a veggie tray, store bought salad, shrimp cocktail, and garlic bread and grilled veggies. You can also watch the chef handle the food over the BBQ pit fire grill in the middle of the restaurant. The artichoke is well seasoned and has a nice flavor enhanced by the grill- it's a truly unique way to eat artichoke. The ribeye was so moist and tender, seasoned, almost melting in my mouth quality. For authentic BBQ, this over 60 year old establishment has perfected the steak and artichoke with some nice accompaniments as well. read more

Walking into the restaurant, you notice a friendly feeling from the family owners and other staff. The best part was, there was no line. However, it took 3 hours to get my main course which in between the servers gave our party 4 of the tiniest sides at a time to stall. Also, don't go as a party of 6 or more, because you automatically get one baked potato as a side instead of the other various options you could have gotten for yourself. On the other hand, the food was fantastic, and despite it being over 50 dollars per person, it was worth it and almost everyone had to take part (or most) of their entree home. I recommend this restaurant directly after it opens so no one is there and you won't need to wait 5+ hours for your food. read more

What can I say about this place that hasn't already been pointed out. It's the place I take my family and friends when they are in town. They all agree this is one of the best steak houses they have ever visited. I always order the rib-eye medium rare, its very delicious. If I have one issue with the place is that it is very loud. So loud that it is difficult to have a conversation at the table. I suppose the building is so old that the acoustics are poor and noise has no where to escape. Wow, I had forgotten how good this place was till I came back on a 4 day "foodie field trip" through the central coast. Although I have eaten here a handful of times, this last experience was perfection. First off, I love that dinner includes appetizers, shrimp or fruit cocktail, your entree, ice cream and coffee! What a deal! There is no way you could ever leave hungry! The linguica appetizer was so delectable, we gobbled the whole thing down in a matter of moments. The outside was crispy and the inside was so juicy with a cinnamon-spice bite. My rib-eye was so expertly cooked and tender. My fellow diner couldn't say enough good things about the ribs. I also love smothering my potato and bread in the delicious BBQ sauce, I even bought a bottle to take home. I know its out in the sticks, but the experience is really worth it. This place is the bomb. When my buddies and I plan our golf weekend in Santa Maria we never miss an opportunity to dine at Hitching Post. While not a fancy place the steaks are so tasty. They cook them over wood with a very tasty dry rub on it. The steaks are cooked to perfection and always melts in your mouth. And what a deal for the money you can't ask for a better bargain between a quality steak and price. A winner. read more

This place is a proper steakhouse, complete with all the fixings for a really delicious meal. We made a reservation and were seated within a few minutes of entering the restaurant, the ambiance is nice - very old fashioned american steakhouse. The list of available steaks were quite extensive and my friends and i were able to all order and sample different cuts of steak. I ordered the flat iron steak, which was quite possibly one of the most tender cuts of steaks i have ever had. It came with a side of sweet raspberry sauce which complemented the steak well. The entre comes with a house salad, soup (or shrimp cocktail), and a choice of potato or rice pilaf. The meal was extremely filling and many of us were able to take home leftovers. For dessert we ordered the vanilla bean creme brulee - very delicious and exactly how i would expect this place to serve this delicious dessert. First off.... This place is located in the middle of nowhere but...... WOW! This place was Great! I had the 8oz fillet Mignon medium and it was DELICIOUS!!... Tender and juicy!!... The fries were really good and to be honest i have no idea why they were so good, they look like regular fries but they were really tasty! The only item i really didn't like was the "garlic" bread, it didn't have any garlic at all... just taste like bread n butter! The bar was cool too, the place was packed and there was only one bartender... I believe her name was Mina, she did an awesome job with the attending the bar people and making the table orders!... For context I worked in restaurants for YEARS so I know amazing food and exceptional service. I prided myself on extraordinary service and valued my guests as if they were personal friends. When I moved up and supervised I went above and gladly represented the establishment and backed my staff 100% and gave them whatever support they needed. So I know restaurants and how they function from the inside. We found this restaurant disappointing. I've always heard AMAZING THINGS about The Hitching Post and expected something much better then what we experienced. My partner and I rarely get time to our selves as we have an 11 month old daughter and this was our second outing with just the two of us since I had our daughter last September. We were excited to looking forward to somewhat of a special date night. Unfortunately we were really disappointed. We had a reservation and showed up on time, we still had to wait around 20 minutes to be sat, we didn't mind at all because I understand the flow of dinner service, I've been there. We were sat at a table in a small separate dining room where I was facing a wall with water damaged wallpaper to one side and an emergency exit door to the other. The server was polite but not what I would define as attentive. The menu felt like it was lacking, I ended up going with a special because nothing else spoke to me. The food was ok at best, it looked kind of sad sitting on a massive plate, again nothing special. There weren't too many options for wines by the glass so we settled on something that again wasn't really what we wanted but it was something we could have....if that makes sense. We passed on desert all together, if the food was amazing we would have definitely gotten something but again, nothing felt appealing. If I could give 3.5 I really would like to give that extra 0.5 star because my experience really wasn't that bad overall. Food - I had top sirloin and some of my husband's rack of lamb - cooked Santa Maria style. They both had great flavor but just didn't have that "wow" factor. French fries were hot and crispy, just the way I love them! Baked potato was good, too. All stake menu comes with salad, entree (meat, potato), dessert, coffee/tea. Pretty good deal, I think. Their pineapple sherbert was super yummy! Really had that good pineapple flavor and very refreshing. Reservation - do make reservation or get there early. Luckily, we got there around 5:30pm so we were able to get in no wait, no reservation but boy, that place got really busy around 6pm! Apparently, they do Twilight Special (like happy hour discounts) if you come early enough. You can save a little money there. Outdoor - They have pretty nifty restaurant cat hanging area with koi pond, tree "house" and little garden area. I suppose they use the outdoor area when they host an event. Everyone's been saying good things about this place and their steaks but this one is a one and done for me lol

I've been here a few times now. And it's been with a large crowd. The first time I went we were very late from the time we were suppose to arrive with our group. So ultimately we thought we might not be well taken care of and was I wrong! I will talk about the few times that were the memorable ones. We were seated outside with just the people who were late with me ( about 5 people in total ) the chef actually brought us some appetizers for free to try out and offered special items not listed on the menu. The food was great and the service was unbelievable. I remember every time I had wanted something like water, butter etc there was someone already waiting on us and asking us if we needed anything or if the food was ok. Another time I've gone was with a very large group of people. It was with the ferrari car club of america group during our yearly Vadenberg AirForce base exotic car show. They had a special menu for us and even specialty cocktails for us to choose just for the occasion. I ordered the ribs with potatoes. For appetizers we had shrimp cocktail and a salad. The Ribs... I actually sent back. Now let me clarify why before you think they aren't any good. The ribs are smoked very lightly and more so boiled. Then seared on the grill for marks. Now hey I'm not entirely against this... it works for some places.. but for here it does not. The ribs were way over cooked and very under seasoned. I asked to return this plate and opt for the Halibut. WOW am I glad I did. The Halibut was cooked absolutely perfect. Seasoned well and plate presentation on point. I honestly think it's the best halibut I've ever had at a restaurant ever. I can cook myself much better halibut... but that's cooking for myself obviously. The shrimp cocktail isn't really a shrimp cocktail it's more like a cold shrimp soup lol. But it was still tasty. The salad was your basic salad nothing to write home about. Either way I definitely recommend this place if you want some good quality food. The atmosphere can be different everyday. So I can't entirely comment on that. The Steakhouse is not a common restaurant for me to visit. Don't get me wrong -- I love a good steak, but I don't ever wind up going to places that are just .... about the steak. And... The Hitching Post is extraordinary. There was a line out the door, the waiting area was packed, the bar was full and there was an hour wait for a table for two. I'm so glad I called for a reservation! Let's be clear: what they do best is the steak. My filet mignon was PERFECTLY cooked and a very fine cut of beef. But they surround the steak with a complete meal: a tray of veggies and basket of crackers first, then shrimp cocktail, then a small dinner salad, then the beast -- served with grilled veggies or baked potato or fries AND garlic bread. And topped off with ice cream for dessert. All of this is very old-school dining. And perfect for what it is. Amanda, our server, took great care of us. Friendly, attentive, on point the whole evening.... Kristen recommended a bottle of wine that went perfectly with our meal. Service was top notch. The atmosphere was hopping. We hired The Hitching Post to cater our recent wedding at The Hollister Ranch. Dawn, The Hitching Post's catering coordinator is a rockstar at what she does and worked tirelessly with us through our MANY rounds of questions to come up with a menu and plan for our wedding reception. Dawn also worked with our rental company directly to determine what quantity of items we would need and to coordinate our order. In addition to many conversations over the phone and via email, Dawn took the time to meet with us in person at the restaurant and at our reception site on multiple occasions. The day of our wedding went perfectly, due in no small part to Dawn's excellent planning, the gracious and talented work of The Hitching Post wait staff and chefs, and our on-site coordinator from The Hitching Post, Amanda. After dinner and dessert, they all stayed late into the evening to clean up as well. In addition to the excellent service the Hitching Post provided, the food and wine were AMAZING! We had delicious hor d'oeuvres including linguiça sausage and lobster crostini, and grilled artichokes, chicken, and steaks for dinner. Everything was impeccable. We were trying this restaurant because a long time ago it was delicious. Unfortunately, the food was undercooked and average. I ordered a specialty drink and it wasn't very good. When we got our bill their was an artichoke added to bill. It took about 10 minutes to get it corrected. Service was average too. Then we both had stomach issues afterwards. We watched "Sideways" first and then thoroughly enjoyed our dinner even more. Place was very quaint, loved the decorations and the aura. Only thing that confused me was from the menu and the looks of the place, it seemed to look quite fancy, but when you look around, everyone is in super casual wear, and with a touch of country music playing. Food was superb! And the wine was fantastic! So if you're looking for a place that is somewhat fancy but you don't have to dress the part come here! This will come as a shock to those who frequent the Hitching Post. I have never had a bad meal there until last night. We had 7 total in our group- waitress was great, adult beverages were made right (long island was 9 out of 10). The food was awful, i had the filet 8oz, was not made to the Hitching Post standards, the Scallops were no bigger than a nickel, and were way over cooked. The potato (same with everyone else) was very small, old and overcooked. Two people had fish which was dry, the other steaks were not made to order. Bummer! I had high expectations. Complete-absolute bummer. Bartender didn't give a crap. Had to pull out wine specials from her based on previous experience at HPII. Word to the cook: they've recently come up with something called "seasoning". Garlic? Horseradish? Lemon zest/juice? Herbs? Salt 'n pepper? How about parsley for color/garnish at minimum?!? It's 2017! Crappy, flavorless frozen popcorn shrimp went out in 1988. 5 or 6 25/30 prawns = same price but more flavor and texture. Saiad was wrong, (rough/fringe), ends of romaine and unstemmed spinach w/ sysco dressing. Cherry tomatoes were fresh. Asked about bread. Poor effort for "garlic-bread" comes out with dinner. No garlic flavor. Word to the cook: press garlic with butter, add salt 'n pepper..spread on bread, touch of parmesan, then broil = easy garlic bread. Garlic powder and oil on flat top is not garlic bread. I ordered my 10 oz sirloin medium-rare. Normally I order medium to be safe but figured a self proclaimed great steak house could pull off medium rare. Oops! Ends were good. Cut open raw middle to show dead-eyed bartender, she only stated that other people order it bluer and bloodier. Cool...right on...good on 'em....NOT what I ordered. Even though rare...very tough. Probably frozen/thawed. Saw cook on the way out. I informed him of the poor effort. He replied by saying he's been there for 30 years and "he doesn't walk on water". Great...only Jesus can prepare a $40 10oz sirloin steak. Both bartender and cook told me I should have sent it back to be cooked longer. Awesome...my job to order high-end steak then tell 'em how to cook it. They were both quick with that reply. Must happen often. Let's see... order it, have them cook it wrong, rest (I assume), (lose juice/flavor), sit under warmer 'til dead-eye gets around to it, (lose juice/flavor), brings it out, determine that it's poorly cooked, (lose juice/flavor), send it back, then thrown back in to release more juices and flavor that should have remained in the first place if done properly. That's the recipe for jerky, not $40 steak. Ordered the vegetables instead of fries. Mistake! Barely cooked. Skins still on peppers. How does a Grill not remove pepper skins?!? First thing after firing grill - further seasons the grill. Rookie/lazy issues. Garlic-thyme butter and caramelization on veggies while grilling?!? I'm sure most times their mediocre service and production is passable for most of their clientele. If you're a foodie and expect a steak dinner beyond Outback or Applebees then...well, good luck! Absolutely love the steaks here the only thing I think they could do better is a few upgrade options in their process like an iceberg salad who uses iceberg lettuce anymore spring mix is a lot better. I do love the artichokes. The steaks of course they're always to die for. I think they really good upgrade their dessert menu rainbow sherbet is cheap and so is White ice cream with fudge frosting if I'm gonna spend $40-$70 a plate I feel like I could get a little something better for dessert option in a salad but I guess what you're paying for here is the open fire grill for the steaks seafood read more

Honestly hands down this food was Amazing!!!!!! I got the Australian lobster and my boyfriend got the 32 ounce rib eye wow!!. From our drinks.. our appetizers..dessert! 10/10. This was our first time and will not be our last! This will be our to go place most definitely. Our waiter did seem a bit overwhelmed but was not attentive as expected. She was just okay. Location of restaurant is rarely a part of my review, but I admit I like that this wonderful steakhouse is out in nowhere. It makes it a journey from Santa Maria or wherever you are coming from. I love the indoor hunting lodge atmosphere, but also like the garden and ponds in the back. As for food, if you drive this far, get the best, and that's filet mignon. Sure it ain't cheap, but it's still better and cheaper than a typical big city steakhouse. Plus, the salad and sides all come with it. Everyone has to try this place at least once. The Buellton location is just as good food-wise but lacks the cool atmosphere. Oh yeah, their own pinot noir wines are really good too - buy one to go. read more

My first time there was great. Our waitress Amanda was the best. The scallop app was terrific I ordered a chefs special 30oz bone in ribeye med rare but on the rare side based on their temperature description. I was a little disappointed the steak came out a little past med well. Honestly the steak was delicious so I kept it. I'll go with med rare on the rate side next time to get it cooked how I like it This is really a great place and everyone seems to know everyone else. I politely asked the hostess which steak the table to my left had. I was thinking she could identify the cut visually instead she walks over and says hey Fred is that your usual ny strip? The steak was pretty good after it had to be redone. The drinks were tasty. I enjoyed the patio area, especially with the heaters on.

We have heard great things about the the Hitching Post over the years and by chance found our selves near by last night. Holy cow that was a fantastic experience. The bartender and the chef came over to say hello and introduce them selves. Everyone was so nice and the food was amazing. My husband and I heard this place was good so we decided to try it out! The atmosphere was very nice. The service was quick and friendly. I had scallops which were delicious. Best I've had.
