Hob-Nob drive-in was plenty busy for a late lunch on a Saturday. There are maybe 30 seats inside but, as the name implies, they do drive-in service as well if you want to stay in your car. We grabbed a booth (you can seat yourself when you go in). Make sure you go in through the ENTER door. We started with waters while we looked over the menu. The waters were 32 oz to go cups! It's been 10 days since our visit and I think I'm still sipping on that water. It was a LOT of water. Our order consisted of a two hot dogs, onion rings, milkshakes, and a hot caramel cake. The hot dogs were good. Not great, but good. The onion rings were very nearly burnt. Probably just a touch too crispy. The milkshakes were ok. But one thing moved this review from a 3 to 4 star: the hot caramel cake. Holy cow. I know it was relatively simple but the yellow cake cupcake, in a bowl filled to the brim with hot caramel sauce, and a tower of vanilla soft serve....YUM! I'd come back here just for that. The service was hit or miss depending on who stopped by the table. All in all, I'd return but I'd try a burger and get a hot caramel cake AND a hot fudge cake. read more

We did not order but looks like they have amazing ice cream sundae's on the menu. Glad we stopped! It was 3 minutes off the highway and much better than fast food at a gas station. I recently discovered Hobnob Drive-In at 2256 Daniel Boone Rd, and I can't believe I've lived so close without knowing about this gem! The food is absolutely delicious, and after my first visit, I was hooked. I've already been there three times in just one month, and I'm eagerly planning my next trip back. The flavors, the atmosphere, and the friendly service make it a must-visit spot. I also like that you don't have to go in so if you have your fur babies with you, you can pull up and they'll come out to your car and take your order and deliver it right back to your car and you can sit there and eat! This place was packed! Despite being a little off the beaten path, well who's kidding, this entire area is ohh the beaten path! Food was pretty fast despite there being nowhere to sit, they will bring it right out to your car, and it was delicious! I had the grilled chicken sandwich, and a side of onion rings, and both were great! People were nice as can be. The views from outside were also beautiful, Mountain View's from all angles. I was staying down at the cabins at Natural Tunnel, so this was a short drive away from some affordable quick yummy food, and this milkshakes looked amazing! Almost everyone was walking out with one. This is a real community restaurant. Everyone knows almost everyone else. A real fun place. It is easy to see why the community flocks here. Food is fabulous, portions are large, and service is friendly and quick. I've been here several times. The hamburger is so good I haven't delved into the other menu items. I have tried almost all the sides. They are all very tasty and plentiful. I always top the meal with ice cream. I haven't the nerve to try the large cone. Sad to have such disappointing food from a century old icon. 40 years I have dined here... The hot dog was very low quality with chili that was bland. The hamburger was supposed to be 5.3 oz raw, but it was likely 3oz, and cooked beyond death. The buns are as cheap as possible. The fries are cheap crinkle cut. The ketchup was food service junk. Pinto beans are $5 for a scant bowl- REALLY? The milkshakes were beyond compare. Love the memories, but can tell the business is failing. Too much competition crawling closer and closer for such meh food quality. I had planned 2 visits over 3 days, but just could not stomach a 2nd visit on this trip. I am so happy to live so close to a regional treasure like Hob-Knob. (And yes, it does have its bragging rights, as apparently people come from all over the place to experience it!). I have yet to order anything from there that I did not enjoy, from burgers/sandwiches/dinners (they have really good chicken, excellent burgers, and my husband loves their hamburger and cheeseburger steak dinners), to the sides, down to our most favorite part: the desserts. The last time I ate there, I had one of their newest seasonal creations: a banana pudding milkshake. Oh my goodness, it was good! If you are ever in this little corner of the world and want something fast and delicious, from an old-school drive in that has been going for decades and decades, stop at Hob Knob. Also- I saw a review talking about how they won't be returning because of the "dangerous" road, and parking lot, warning others of this... I am only to assume that the person writing that review is not from around here (?), because that's a common type of thing a lot of places- pulling out onto a state road with a speed limit of 55 mph. Sure, a light or stop sign would probably be helpful, but in most instances like this, we get along just fine. I live on this road, less than 2 miles from the Hob Knob, and can promise that it isn't as bad as that review makes it out to be. Proper caution and good sense are all you need. Most locals know to slow their roll coming up on the Hob Knob. Maybe it is just that I personally am used to pulling off of and back onto roads with higher speeds, but it really isn't as bad as was made out to be. Just watch yourself, and use proper caution! read more

The actual address of this very busy place is 2256 Daniel Boone Road, Gate City, VA. It's closed on Mondays. By 3 PM on Sunday afternoon the crowd thins out a bit. Then six people walk in to sample the various ice cream delicacies. Turns out they are a Gospel quartet (and 2spouses) from SC. With sundaes and cones in hand they break into 4 part Gospel Harmony and the rest of the HobNob stills to enjoy the sound. Staff is friendly, food is good. Didn't expect dinner and a show! read more

This time a single parking spot opened up as soon as we pulled in, so we figured this was the time. Despite the crowd, service and food was quite fast and excellent. Good value for the money as well. Almost a five star. So what's not to like? Nothing...it's fine, but it looks like (and probably was) a 70's "Tasty Freeze" type restaurant with fast food type seating that puts you just a bit too close to your "neighbors" at other tables. Good tasty food! Heard much about it before a visit. Enjoyed my meal there but will not be returning until much needed improvements are made. For the sake of others, a serious word of caution: The road there is a state road on which locals travel at speeds far above 55mph. As this location has no formal intersection, or other traffick control measures, I ask you to take caution upon exiting & entering the large lot. But I highly recommend you visit & try this longterm locally-favored restaurant! You will love the food! read more
