Ignore the first poster....the review is for Portsmouth Piercing, not Hobo's. There will always be people that have not so great experience at excellent places. First off, the tattoo shop is actually known as Hobo's (to the locals) and the 3 guys I have gotten work done from there are AMAZING! James (no longer there...back to CA I think) did my first two, George did my 3rd and Al my 5th. I get complimented EVERYWHERE I go on the quality by other tattoo artists or people who are just impressed with the work. They don't require appointments unless you are getting large and/or custom work. Although, due to high demand, Jason usually requires appointments. Me and two other people went to get matching ink as a walk in. Will told us to come back at 3pm. He started everything at 3:20. We got the ink payed and went to the car before 4:30. They were tiny tattoos. 5 minutes in the chair each max. Will didn't quote a price before and if we had we would have NOT gone there. He charged us $120 a pop! So $340 for less then an hour of work. This place is amazing! I went there on my 18th birthday for my first tattoo and they were so accommodating. I walked in so they were busy at the moment but they booked me an appointment for 2 hours later so I just walked around downtown and had some fun with my friend. I showed him what I kind of wanted but I wanted it changed a little bit and they said they can definitely do that. When I got back they already had my picture all drawn up and it was PERFECT! Billy Chop was the artist who tattooed me and he was amazing, I almost even passed out in the beginning because needles scare but it happens every time I get a new piercing too and he helped me out, had me drink water, lay down and kept asking if I was okay. And at the end it turned out even better than I excepted! read more

(Sorry I don't remember his name; was a younger guy with quite a little attitude or lets just say maybe it wasn't his good side of the bed day) It is the worst thing you could do as a tattoo artist is to not listen and forget things we ask for. It was OK clean. Our experience was not the best and it really could have been an awesome memory, instead it makes me mad to think about it. A couple years ago I made an appointment to get my first professional tattoo here but the artist I saw refused to give me a price before I got my work done. He was rude and grossly overcharged me for what I got. After the tattoo healed refused to touch it up when I said it came out patchy, AFTER he had told me he would give it a free touch up when it was healed. No idea if that artist is still there but he shouldn't have been there in the first place. read more

I wish I could give zero stars. I got "owie" on the inside of my lip. The idea was that I could pout and it would say "owie", but the guy said he didn't want to do it there, that it had to be farther down on my lip. He acted like he was better than me, a super chauvinistic asshole. I will never go back. I only went there in the first place because I wasn't driving and I didn't have a say. I had the absolute pleasure of being tattooed here by Rachel Schilling during one of her guest spots. My girlfriend and I drove up from Maryland to get tattooed here, and it was well worth it. The girlfriend I came with got tattooed by Billy, who like Rachel, did a fabulous job. We both left with phenomenally good tattoos and had a stellar experience. George was also in the shop that day, and I so enjoyed chit chatting with him and Rachel while she worked on me. We will definitely be back! We've found our go to in NH, that's for sure! read more

Jason has been my go-to tattoo artist for the last 5 years or so. Every time I come up with an idea to add to my sleeve, what he draws for me is way better than what I could have ever dreamed of. I haul my cookies from NYC to get work done by Jason. There was one time I drove up from CT, got tattooed for 3 hours, and drove back in the same day. Everyone else on the Hobo's crew are all funny and welcoming. Most will come check out what Jason's working on for me and add their insight. first I would say my experience was maybe 3 stars max. worked with Steve Clark and he seemed nice at first. telling me he didn't like rushing on the tattoos and to make sure they come out well. I decided to do 4 pieces total for that day. Showed up at noon for the appointment and by the time he finally got ready it was around 1:30. Already not impressed. Told him I wanted the piece he printed out smaller and he went to the back and "shrunk it". It was the same exact size not even a little bit smaller. Charged me well over how much it should've been for it all and I still left a 400$ tip... was still new to tattoos so felt that was normal. now finding out that that is a 40% tip and still got bad service. had to call a few times to finally book a touchup because he didn't fill in all the spots fully. Ended up also getting an addition to one of the previous tats, I wanted it darker and he told me "it's fine" and sent me on my way. As well as charging 300 for a palm sized piece that took him 20 minutes. Called 3 times so far recently just to book a darkening touch up to the tat that I wanted darker and I've been told they'll call me back but it's been days. Awful service wish I never tipped more than 10% for it. read more

I've visited Hobo's twice. The first time was in fall 2010. I had an awesome experience and the tattoo was outstanding. Because of this, I chose to return for a second tattoo yesterday. I called about a week ago and spoke to Bill. I explained what I wanted, a white tattoo on my wrist. He said it wouldn't be a problem and I could just come in, no appointment needed. When I arrived, Jeb was the only artist there. When I explained what I wanted, he said he doesn't do white tattoos. His logic was reasonable, so I said fine. Then we discussed the design I wanted. He had issues with all of it. He didn't like the size, placement, design. As a professional, I respect his opinion and did take some of his advice. However, his attitude absolutely sucked and he came off as angry and judgmental. Perhaps he didn't want the business and was hoping I would just leave, that is certainly how it seemed. He completely ruined the experience and seemed to forget I was a paying (and tipping) customer. Overall, the place is very clean and my tattoo is exactly what I wanted. Because of this and my first experience, I will definitely go back- but absolutely will not use Jeb. read more

My wife and I scheduled an appointment with Andrew. I knew exactly what I wanted and my wife was all over the board, back and forth on style, size, etc. for a relatively simple tattoo. It was her first and she was nervous. Anyway, Andrew was extremely patient with her and he was able to get her exactly what she wanted. I have been going to hobos for 6 plus years they are clean friendly and the artists are good at what they do. I see billy every time i have been there and if I could rate him more than 5 stars I would! not only is he a great artist but he makes your experience when you are there by making sure you are comfortable and he's got a lot of really great stories as well! Jonah did my septum piercing today. It was quick, only slightly painful, and easy to completely hide, which was important to me due to my job! Jonah was communictive via email, and answered my many questions. He was informative when choosing which jewelry to use, and offered any help or assistance I may need in the future with changing the jewelry. My situation was a little different, I went in wanting a very specific tattoo, I brought in a drawing and spoke with an older guy at the counter. He said he could do it, but I wouldn't be happy with it, in a few years. He said the detail was a little to fine and the design would blend, eventually looking like a smudge. He showed me an example of a tattoo he had gotten years ago, and the tigers fur had smudged over time. I got my very first tattoo at the age of 33 from Spencer Scott yesterday! I walked in and told the employees what I wanted and they were very accommodating and kind. Spencer made me feel comfortable and talked me through the whole process which I was very nervous about. My friend was allowed to be with me when I was getting my tattoo for moral support! I am absolutely pleased with my new tattoo! The process was more doable than I thought it would be and I'm so happy with the result! The facilities are well maintained and very clean. It was a very good experience! I'm not from Portsmouth and was traveling for work, but I would gladly travel another 500 miles to receive such great service for a tattoo. Incredibly friendly, accommodating staff. I have only personally dealt with Spencer, Beth, and the owner Jason, and they were very, very nice, and got back to me immediately when I had questions, even Jason, who runs multiple locations and clearly is a very busy man. They never tried to make me feel stupid or as though my concerns were invalid as other tattoo shops in the area have done. Spencer is who I dealt with firsthand, and he clearly was very intent on making sure my vision corresponded with what he would tattoo. He will listen to your questions and concerns and do whatever he can to make the tattoo design you want. He is very friendly and funny, so it made the time pass quickly as I was being tattooed, and I felt very comfortable with him. I had a concern with something and he resolved the issue and was very sincere and helpful. Very good people. I have also dealt with Jonah at Hobo's piercing, and he is excellent. For some reason my first review was hidden, but if you want to get pierced- see him! Incredibly friendly, welcoming, clean atmosphere, and he is incredibly clean and thorough when doing your piercing. Additionally, he has TONS of jewelry in stock, even solid 14k white gold, rose gold and yellow gold pieces for various areas of the body. He can get pretty much anything you want too. I got a helix cartilage piercing done by Stephanie. I had been hesitant for a while to get another ear piercing because my skin is very sensitive and I've had many infections on my lobes because of piercings. However Stephanie was very professional, helpful, and friendly. She informed me how to prevent future infections (turns out i have a nickel allergy) and maintain proper cleaning with the new piercing. I am so glad I finally got the piercing done.
