Café blumen - Blumenkohl Panini, Mandelkuchen, Chai Latte

They can do table service if you dine in but you can also just order and pay at the counter. It seems very popular with the hipster crowd but based on my experience it can be a welcoming place for anyone. The two baristas were both cheerful and patient with my not-good German. The menu is very vegan friendly - there are vegan options for sandwiches and baked goods, and there's oat milk for drinks. I got a Blumenkohl panini, a Mandelkuchen, and a Chai Latte. I was a fan of the panini, the smashed cauliflower in was actually very flavourful with curry-esque spices. No complaints on the latte. The Mandelkuchen fell short of my expectations, I thought it was on the dry side, although the strong almond flavour was nice. If I had been able to see a cross section of this before I ordered, I would've gotten something else - the cake hadn't been cut into yet when I ordered. The other cake slices looked better. Everything is priced reasonably - my total was about €14. It's the kind of place I'd probably go to all the time if I lived here.

I had already marked this place off as a place to grab something to eat, however it quickly turned out that they don't do breakfast - it is basically a coffee shop that has some cakes but that is about it. The other problem is that it is located on the fringes of the city. Still, it is a nice cafe, and there is a really cool church nearby as well. Oh, and the staff, and coffee, were nice as well.

The waitress was kind and clarified our orders. I ordered the French toast which appeared to be deep fried. I really liked the texture and the fruit on the side tasted fresh. The pancakes are more similar to a crepe but we're a little gummy. My son wasn't thrilled but my husband enjoyed his. The atmosphe was nice and bathrooms were clean and free.

The highlights of this place are definitely the generous portion sizes. Whether it be french toast you desire or an omelette, you will receive what you want and THEN some! Everything was cooked to perfection, and I will sincerely miss the bold flavors of each meal I had, my most favorite one being the blueberry crepe with vanilla sauce. That crepe was the first one I ever had in my life, and it set the bar very high for future ones. Is the food good enough to sit and relax at the table though? Well...I would suggest to order takeaway, but then that would add on to the long wait time on top of the already long time you'd normally sit through if you just stayed put. Du & Ich is very popular, and with that popularity comes some downsides, including waiting over a half hour for one plate of food. It doesn't matter what you get, every time I attended this place, I have waited a significantly long time for my food. It can feel stressful, especially if you were like me and went out to eat with peers that you weren't so close with yet, so you're awkwardly playing on your phone listening to everyone else talk around you. This is even worse when you're a foreigner who doesn't speak German, so you can't even listen in on any hot gossip. Since I touched on the topic of speaking, I will say that the waiters I had spoke decent English. They were very kind to me, and didn't appear judgmental over me being a foreigner- as I had feared. So, I did feel bad when I got frustrated over the long wait. Their restaurant is usually packed with customers, so if you want a taste of their food without the anger of having to wait so long, best option is to occupy your time with some good friends, videos on your phone, or read a book. So again, is the food from Du & Ich good enough to sit and relax at their table? I'd say yes, but please bear with them as they are taking their time for a reason. They have lots of fans in their establishment, and I'm sure you'd become one too once you have a bite of their large, freshly-made dishes.

The first time we saw this restaurant by the Gutenberg Museum, we thought it looks like a pricy,…read moretouristy place. But some of our friends tried it and highly recommended it, so we went for lunch to try it out. This place seems to be busy at any time of the day, and it's easy to see why. The place is modern and comfortable, on one wall there are lots of head silhouette... wonder if there is any significance who these people are? Menu is in German, and we find the price is slightly high, but not unreasonable, and the food quality is definitely top notch! They have the ubiquitous schnitzel, pretzel, sausages as well as other traditional dishes, but also have things like coconut curry soup and tempura, and vegan items. When we went there, asparagus was in season, so they had a special asparagus menu, listing about 10 dishes featuring asparagus: asparagus soup, asparagus risotto, asparagus tempura, coconut asparagus panna cotta... We were glad because, just outside the restaurant, there is this huge farmers market, stalls after stalls selling big fat green and white asparagus, but as tourists staying at a hotel we have no way to cook them. Now finally a chance to try the fresh asparagus. I asked my German friends, "You buy the asparagus at the market and cook them home?" "Ja!" "And you order them at restaurants too?" "Oh yes, we eat them several days a week. Because the season is very short." So what happen when the season is over? "We have to wait till next year." "They don't have them at supermarkets?" "No, because then they are not fresh they are no good!" Needless to say, we had the best asparagus of our lives, after which, we just don't bother with American asparagus anymore...

There is no menu in English but you can muddle through, I know you can. I had a lovely plate of cheese, meat, jelly, a hard-boiled egg, and some decorative fruit with a generous basket of bread. There was a liver wurst option on the menu that I substituted with cheese. There was a goat cheese on this plate that was really great. I ate little bites on bread and also had a chai latte. There is a cozy eating area in the back where you can sit and eat on comfy chairs with a coffee table. They also have books and magazines to read. How cool! The service was exceptional and lunch here was about $10-- you can't beat that especially for the quality and quantity of food. Thank you, Hintz and Kuntz for a lovely stop in Mainz.
