We were visiting and received excellent service. Dree was very attentive with helping us select our food options. The ribs were very tender and had a good smoked flavor and thr baked beans were deelisshh. We also tried the twice cooked chicken and it was good too. The Ribs, that are usually some of the best in the state tasted either very overcooked or were older, ( we visited the first day Hog Pen was open after July 4th break). Service: From the time we walked through the door the service and southern hospitality was 5 star. The service didn't stop there either. From the sample rib they brought out to the free cake of the day because we were leaving at closing time, this place was the best. Food: My family and I had ribs, catfish, pulled pork and a slew of sides, all were excellent. The ribs were EXCELLENT!! Catfish was pretty good too. My family is very picky about BBQ as I'm a serious smoker. This place is worth your time and money. Environment: Friendly locals are always the best. My daughter was unable to open the door and we thought they were closed, but a patron got up to help us in. Plenty of TV's on the wall and March Madness was everywhere. Everything was clean and wait staff was very attentive. Slaw was best I've ever had at a restaurant, not boxed, but fresh, sweet, much like Fresh KFC. Beans were sweet, Smokey, perfect. Served with a slice of grilled Texas toast, buttered. Only thing that would make this better would be if their fries were fresh cut. Then you'd have a 10 stars out of possible 5. THE BEST CATFISH, yes at a BBQ place. I have eaten a lot of catfish in Arkansas (I am old) and this is among the best. Always meaty and big fillets fried crispy and just right. None of that slimy stringy gray meat like down the street at a chain! Hushpuppies are also amazing. And their slaw is wonderful. Different from the usual KFC type. (Note to self: Get their recipe) Their BBQ ribs are meaty and tender, smoked right on the premises. I am not a fan of their sauce because I only like The Original Shack BBQ sauce, which is no longer around. But I like my ribs dry anyway. And their sandwiches are as good as the ribs, I just have to choose which I want. As an added bonus if you dine in, they serve you (FREE) a small back of WARM LARGE pork rinds. OMG! The only negative comment is they are only open 3 days a week and close early. So, if you want some GREAT Southern food, get there before 5:00 pm! It is worth the wait! P.S. I had a jumbo chopped beef sandwich with a side of okra. The beef had a nice smoky flavor, was tender surprisingly moist. I enjoy very hot food so I topped mine with their homemade hot bbq sauce. The sauce was sweet and tangy with a bit of heat. It's a good sauce but it won't make you sweat if that's what you're looking for. The okra was perfectly cooked and just crispy enough. The complimentary pork rinds were a nice bonus, especially with a little sauce on them. I finished with a fried chocolate pie. It was all very delicious. read more

Those were the best pork ribs I've had in quite a while. I had the dry rubbed rib dinner. The ribs were just as I had hoped- typically Arkansas hickory- smoked and done to perfection! The portion was huge! The two sides I had were green beans and mustard potato salad. I loved the potato salad! Not too mustardy, and also perfectly made so not too hard or mushy. Wife and I decided to go to hog pen for lunch. It has been years since I have last eaten here. We both ordered the pork lunch plate. I had the potato salad and hushpuppies with mine and the wife has fried okra and baked beans. All four sides had great flavor and the pork was good. They only had once sauce option which was good but I wish they had a spicy option available on the table. We also had a smoked boudin link which had great spice in it. Over all we had a great lunch. Revisited Hog Pen last weekend with my family. I tried the sliced beef sandwich this time and it was beyond tender. It literally fell apart in my mouth. I also tried the onion rings this time around and they were not bad. Heavily breaded so I couldn't really taste the onion, but they were still good. Take note that they are a cash only establishment and only open from Thursday - Saturday. On my second visit I skipped their tasty sides and had to go all meat since it is a treat I can't always get. I ordered some ribs which were incredibly tasty as usual and include the full cut, the smoked (1/2) chicken that was probably the best smoked chicken I've ever eaten, and 1 strip of catfish. The hog pen was a diamond in the rough, considering all the other barbq I've tried in Arkansas. This is that old- time smoky flavor from back in the day. Not that mass produced caramel-colored that tastes like baked barbq. I was so surprised! I sampled the pull pork, and was truly impressed. It was moist and flavorful and unbelievably tender. I could just get a bowlful and ate it like that if it wasn't a sin. Didn't try any sides as I was in a carnivore state of mind. If you like REAL barbeque cooked on a real pit, not the big gray oven most use, stop in for a try. They also sell real fried pies. Also, the owner stepped out and spoke. This is a 3 years later after the first review update. I'm not gonna change or retract one word from the first review from 2013 other than we knew better than to order the fried pie. This is by far the best ribs we've ever eaten...and I've eaten them all over the bbq hot spot map. My wife's comment on the catfish is (as she's shaking a big ole piece of fish at me) "THIS IS THE WAY FRIED CATFISH IS SUPPOSED TO TASTE! Man this is good." You know you're in the right place when they only take cash or check. Don't worry there's and ATM inside. Do yourself a favor and order the rib dinner, dry rub. Unlike a lot of BBQ places hogpen doesn't use the sauce as a crutch. They have some of the best dry ribs I've had, and you get to taste the meat. The bark is juicy and tender, falls off the bone and melts in your mouth. The sauce is great too, and the wait staff is friendly. I'd give them 10 stars if I could read more

BBQ is the best in town but the older women working isn't very welcoming or friendly. 20 minutes before they close she acts like she doesn't want to serve you and if you call in they take the phone off the hook instead of answering letting their customers know they no longer want to serve them.
