I love any…read morekind of Bingo, and I saw on Facebook they were holding their monthly Bar Bingo on this night. So, I made my way on over. The Village TapHouse is located in the South Hills Village Mall area, but a little up the road from the actual mall. It is tucked away in the rear of the building located on the corner of Washington Road and North Highland Road. The business that is visible from the main intersection is Clubhouse Cards. If you follow North Highland past this entrance off of Washington, The Village TapHouse will be on your right. There is some limited parking right in front of the entrance. However, since there are a lot of other businesses around here, you can find other parking across the street or before the actual entrance, regardless of which direction. I had no issue getting a spot right across the street, and making the short walk over. I arrived that evening around 7:00 PM, as that is when the Bingo was slated to start. There were a good amount of people attending the event, as the indoor main dining area was pretty much full when I arrived! No issue for me though, as I was by myself. So, I found a seat at the bar. There were several other patrons sitting at the bar, but it was not shoulder-to-shoulder or anything like that. There is also some patio seating, but I do not believe the Bingo was heard out in that area. Once situated, I went up to buy my Bingo cards from the two hosts. They were set up in the main dining room, but were using microphones. I had no issue hearing them all night long from the bar. It was $10 for a pack of 3 cards, and I purchased 2 packs. They also had daubers for sale, but I brought my own to use. I waited around for the games to start once I bought my cards, which ended up being around 7:30 PM. It was also Pajama-themed Bingo, which I was unaware of until I arrived. This allowed you for a special perk for one of the games. I am not sure if they always do this, but I would advise participating in whatever theme is advertised to get the most out of your experience. There were a few bartenders serving this evening. The lady who waited on me was prompt and friendly the whole night. I started off with a pint of FireWistle Red. It was a solid red beer, and served as a nice sipper for my evening. As the Bingo went on, I decided to put in a food order. I ordered a Half Dozen Wings in the Chicken and Waffles Wet Rub. I thought this was a unique flavor, so I wanted to give it a try. I enjoyed the taste of these! They were split wings, but overall the size was serviceable. The plate also had several pieces of celery and ranch dressing to accompany the wings. The food here was fairly priced. For my 6 wings and beer pint, the total was around $15. It seemed from the menu that the majority of entrees were $15 or under, which I believe is a great deal. Overall, no complaints in terms of prices or value. I ended up staying here for nearly three hours in order to finish the Bingo games. So, I had plenty of time to take in the atmosphere. I enjoyed the people, staff, and the overall vibe of the place. The patrons were friendly, and the staff seem to recognize their regulars while having meaningful conversation. Plus, the Bingo games brought some fun and entertainment to the night overall. This first visit of mine to The Village TapHouse was a positive one. Very much enjoyed the people, atmosphere, food, and fun Bingo activities. I cannot believe with how close I live to here that it took me this long to give it a try. Now I am happy to know there is a spot like this practically in my backyard. I have seen on Facebook that they also have Trivia Nights, so that is something I want to check out in the future. Even though I did not win Bingo this time, it will not stop me from coming back and trying again. I would recommend stopping here for a meal, or a fun night of entertainment, if you find yourself in the South Hills Village area of town.

My…read morefriends and I would come in high school on Thursdays for $1 Burger Nights (no longer around, RIP), and now we come to enjoy some drinks on the patio and hang out. The bar is located in a strip of stores along Old Clairton Road, just off of route 51. There is some parking in the front that is shared with all the other businesses, and then a parking lot across Old Clairton that gets used at night when the businesses that it is for are closed. Additionally, there is a private lot for the bar in the back, and parking at the Bill Green Shopping Center just a little ways down the road (sidewalks from Bill Green to the bar entrance). Due to a fire that occurred here a few years ago, the entire place has recently been remodeled and reoriented from how it was originally. The bar is now in the back, and the main dining room is in the front. There is also a great patio and outdoor space with open air seating, as well as some area under a porch. Everything is new, clean, and modern as a result of the remodel. On this visit, we came to hang out on a Saturday evening. It was raining, so we had to get a table inside. It was karaoke night, as they have each Saturday, so we got to take in the sights and sounds of several performers. Since we were there later in the evening, we just ordered appetizers to much on along with our drinks. I got the Fiesta Street Corn Dip. It was a great value for the price, and there was a ton to go around the whole table. I also sipped on a Summer Shandy from their seasonal draft list. Overall, the food menu has a decent selection, all at very reasonable prices. The draft list did not have any red or brown ales on it, but there was still a fair selection of drinks. The ladies who came around to our table were pleasant and helpful. It was rather crowded, but there would be times we would not see a server for extended periods of time. I do not think it helped that our table was tucked back in a corner, but wish we would have been visited on a somewhat more frequent basis to put additional orders in. I always have a good time at the P-Bar, and enjoy coming here. Especially in the summer, it is an ideal place to hang out and catch up with friends. And likely, if you are from the area, you will run into several people you know. I did not have their breakfast this time, but the breakfast they have on the weekends is worth a try as well!

In fact I'm told by the bartender that The Coalmine in nearby Castle Shannon now has the original Bobby's fish sandwich recipe. The menu is very limited bar food. Burgers, dogs, wings, fries. My daughter and I both ordered fried chicken sandwiches, and unfortunately, both were seriously overcooked--like "bottom of the fryer" overdone. The chicken only covered about half the bun and quickly became inedible. We actually had to swap sandwiches just to see if one was any better, but neither improved. Between the two of us, we could only get through about half of one and maybe a third of the other before it just wasn't worth trying to eat anymore. I mentioned it to our waitress in a calm, straightforward way and told her both sandwiches were inedible. She did offer to have them remade, but after seeing what came out the first time, we declined. I don't recall receiving an apology, which was disappointing. What really stood out was that the issue was never addressed beyond that--no follow-up, no adjustment to the bill, nothing. I didn't ask for anything to be taken off, but when a significant portion of the meal can't be eaten, you'd expect some effort to make it right. Coming from someone who works in customer service, this felt like a miss on both food quality and basic service recovery. I wouldn't recommend the chicken sandwich, and I'd be cautious about expecting attentive service here.

The Loose Moose is located on Brownsville Road, right over the boarder into Whitehall from Pleasant Hills. There is plenty of signage identifying the building from the road. Additionally, there is a large private parking lot that surrounds the establishment. This visit to the Moose was on a Monday evening in July. Mondays are one of their Wing Nights, where whole wings are $1.25 each. We primarily came for this special, but also ordered some other items to enjoy with the wings. The restaurant was not too crowded at the time we arrived, which was right before 8 PM. As stated, this is a restaurant and bar. So, when you walk in, the bar is straight ahead and the restaurant part is to the right. There are several booths and tables in the restaurant part. Tables can be pushed together to allow for a larger group to dine. Most of the booths seat 4 to 6 people. It is open seating, meaning you can choose your table. The atmosphere here is very much a hometown bar vibe. There are TVs, pool tables, dart boards, and lots of life coming from the patrons and regulars. There are a few bubble gum/candy machines in the lobby. In the breezeway, there is even a cigarette vending machine. After choosing our booth, we placed our order. Being that we come here rather frequently, we ordered some favorites at this visit. To start, we chose a Combo Platter for an appetizer. This is a platter with 4 different appetizers from a specific list. We got the Zucchini, Pickles, Onion Rings, and Hot Cheese Balls. The Zucchini here is thicker, and all of the fried items have a thicker batter/breading. We liked all the items, and thought the size of the platter was very good for the price! It was enough to share with a few people. In addition to my wings, I also ordered a salad. I had the plan of eating some, and then taking the rest home for a lunch the next day. The salads here are a hidden gem, in my opinion. My personal favorite is the Chef Salad, which is what I ordered this night. It is piled HIGH with turkey, ham, pepperoni, and cheese, along with lettuce and other veggies of course. It is delicious and very satisfying since there is so much meat and protein! I would highly recommend this item for anyone coming here. Our wings came out last, about 35 minutes after we sat down. They fry all of the wings to order, so they will take longer than one might expect. However, because of this they always come to the table hot and fresh. There are several different sauce options to choose from. On this trip, I got the Loose Moose Sweet, which is similar to a Sweet Thai Chili-type sauce. My fiancé ordered Garlic Parmesan with Mild Sauce on the side. I am never disappointed with the wings, and this day was no exception. The value at The Loose Moose is hard to beat. Along with the daily specials, their regular menu is very reasonably priced. Especially considering how much food is served for the prices. The salad I always order is less than $7, and is enough to split into two meals for me. All of the appetizers are under $8, with most being under $6. It is nice to be able to visit somewhere without spending a fortune for a good meal. Plus, there are Happy Hour drink specials during those times. Service here is friendly and good. The waitresses and staff are always kind, and do get to know their customers that frequent the place. My only complaint is more-so about the management regarding this. On busy nights, such as Wing Night, the place will be packed and there will be 2 servers for the entire dining room. You can go 15+ minutes without speaking to your server. This can get frustrating. However, the actual servers themselves are not the issue there. This would definitely be an area for improvement. We enjoy coming to The Loose Moose. My parents come here weekly, and I have been many times since they first introduced me. The specials and prices are hard to beat. It is close to me, and food is good, and the people and staff are friendly. It gives hometown bar vibes, which can be comforting and enjoyable for a lot of people. I would recommend giving this place a try, but be patient if you come during a busy time!
