    2012 Medal
    Marty B.

Fun Run! Ran this last year and had to return a second year. But ... hills, hills, and hills. Yet I had lots of fun, fun, and fun! Hmm, not crazy about the 15 minute delayed start. Next time let's start on time. There was a lot of congestion at the finish line where water, snacks, and fruit were passed out. Next year? You bet ... check out the 2012 medal ... Yay!

Awesome race! I did the 5K, so I can't speak on the half, but this was great. Parking was $10 which is a little steep for a race I'm only going to spend 30 minutes at, but what can you do. The "expo" and packet pickup was before the race. Since the 5K was on Saturday and the half on Sunday, the 5K participants picked up our bibs and shirts before the race. There was no Friday expo which I'm fine with. It's a smaller, local race and the expo wasn't much either. There were maybe 10 booths. It's nothing to complain about though since it is a small race, you shouldn't expect too much in that area. The race was run well. I quickly received my bib and shirt which was cute by the way! I headed back to my car to stay warm since it was 45 degrees and my fingers were nearly about to fall off. When it was time to go and warm enough I left my car and headed to the start line. There weren't too many participants and I can't say how many there were exactly, but it wasn't at all overcrowded. Everyone was respectful and gave enough personal space at the start line. There were no corrals so it was just the honor system on how fast you are, which actually worked out perfectly thanks to the announcer. He reminded the crowd to go to the correct places plenty of times. The race started 5 minutes late to allow for the race day registration participants to get to the start line which wasn't that big of a deal. The 5K course goes through the Fairplex parking lot so it isn't a very visually appealing course. Up until the first mile it was full of trees and some nice things to look at and run through. After the first mile it is all parking lot. 5Ks are quick and fun. This is a run/walk so feel free to bring your kids and family and walk the whole course if you'd like! There's a 1 hour 30 minute cut off for the race which is plenty of time to walk the course. The medal was really cute and I love how there were military men giving them to us at the finish! Thank you so much! I'll likely be running this event again next year, possibly the half to check out the course.

The course ended up being about 2.5 miles. There was only ONE water station for the entire run, which is pretty unacceptable even for a fun run. Parking was another mess. They didn't mention any parking fees until two days before the event via text, and when we got there, it was just employees standing around with bags collecting $20 cash. No cards and no prior clear communication. It felt very unprofessional. Bib pickup was probably the worst part. The pickup itself was on Friday, but we were only told about the 4-8 PM window the Monday before, which is already short notice. When we got there, it took an hour and a half just to get to the front of the line, and that was with VIP. I've done much larger events before, and none of them were anywhere near this chaotic. The race start itself made no sense. Instead of organized waves, they just had everyone crowd at the gate and go at once. The course clearly wasn't designed to handle that many people. It was overcrowded, with lots of people walking, and we were constantly dodging others and even low hanging tree branches. I'm 5'9 and the person I ran with is 6'4, and it genuinely felt unsafe at times trying to avoid both people and obstacles. If you're actually trying to run, this is not the event for you. You won't be able to maintain any kind of pace. They also offered the option to create a team name online that would appear on your bib, but when I showed up, it was just a generic bib with a duck and a number. No customization and no tracking, which makes the bib feel pointless. Honestly, it's something that could have just been printed at home. Overall, this felt poorly planned and poorly executed. It might be fine if you're just going for a casual, messy experience, but if you expect even basic race organization, this will be disappointing.

(Especially the swim). Luckily they had two options, the 5k and 10k for those that just run like myself. There's definitely more cons than pros, but I imagine it's not easy to run events. Pros: -Challenging is an understatement. -Nice park. -There weren't a lot of 10k runners so it wasn't hard to get a division award. -trail race, duathalon, triathlon options. It's nice to see different type of athletes -true trail challenge and test of your will power and endurance - runners were nice, we were all thinking the same thoughts hill after hill after hill. -free beer at finish for those of age. -easy but expensive parking $10 Cons: -Challenging is an understatement. - wish the 10k wasn't the 5k twice.. -It's not beginner runner friendly. - i would say 85% of runner were walking or had spouts of walking before end of mile one. - few water spots available through the race -started late (wish they could start earlier than 8:15) -you would probably not like the tiny participant medal if you are a medal collector. -finish area was small. A free water bottle would have been nice. I ended up drinking like 5 of those mini water cups.

You get a t-shirt, head band, a bag of colored chalk, and some safety pins. The run itself was fun and I had a great time with my friend, but the organization of this event could use some work. ID check was non-existent, so there was no absolute way to verify who bought a legitimate ticket or who was claiming to be a person on the list with a common name. One "water station" throughout the whole track...which really was a kiddie pool with 24-pack water bottles. I guess I was too slow because the gazelles in front of me had ransacked them, leaving nothing for the thirsty slowpokes. The end of the race was highly anticlimactic...passing the parking lot and back to the start, with cones all of a sudden disappearing to signal the "end" and people sauntering off to their cars after taking a few jump shots. Would do again, but I am more willing to try the Color Run instead next time.

The color blasts are colored cornstarch and they were pretty easy to wash off! Pro: * Awesome DJs for pumped up music! * Great scenery with some up and down hill runs. Good change in elevation! * Awesome volunteers at each color blast station and handing out water! THANK YOU! * Lots of fun! Super colorful and lots of encouragement from volunteers and runners alike. * Several leaf blowers as "color removers" and blasting all the loose powder off. * Water-soluble and non-toxic fun that was easy to wash off, thank goodness. Con: * Being the first year it was pretty disorganized. The check-in line was free for all and ended up being SUPER LONG. I think could benefit from separating by alphabets like A-H, I-O, P-Z or something so that the poor volunteers don't have to go through the entire binder for day-of check ins. Tabs would be helpful also. We were in line for 2 hours coz we couldn't make it to pick up the day before. * Mile or any distance marker would be helpful for those who are running and trying to figure out the time. But it would be good to encourage people, plus you can get people to sponsor for the mile markers for some more funding. * Not very much vendors at the end of the race. * Took more than 20minutes between each wave of runners. All in all a great start! Can't wait to do it again next year!

I remember at one point as we were walking around I said "It just keeps going!" Secondly, the light displays are amazing. If you're looking for photos to post on social media, this is the place for you. Everywhere we turned we were like "Oh, wow!" and stopped so many times to take photos. A couple of the displays were also animatronic. There were also little freestanding rooms with mirrors that turn the small space into an infinity room. You just have to wait outside in a line until it's your turn to go in. And other rooms had seating, flowers, and Christmas trees specifically for people to pose and take pictures with. They also had a live circus act and carnival games. There were food trucks and food stalls with places to sit down and eat. There was also a "Transformer" car, so we actually decided to sit and eat there while we waited for the show to start, but they will try to charge you a small fee if you want to take a close up picture with it and they'll try to sell you toy versions of it. When we went on the ferris wheel, we actually got to see it transform from our aerial view. We also got a great overview of how expansive the light displays were and noticed an area we hadn't gotten to yet, so after the ride we went there. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the long line and wait to get in while sitting in our car. We also got a little lost trying to find the entrance because Google Maps told us to go to the wrong gate. I think it's been fixed since then. Overall, though, it was a great experience. Just know that you'll be doing a lot of walking.

The chalk room was really fun for her too. They do have a few carnival rides and carnival food booths open. I would say eat before you go because fair food is pricey. We paid $8 for a bottle soda. We purchased our tickets on Groupon for a discounted price.
