A camp like the ones you see in the movies... from the brown and white cabins to the shade-lending…read moretrees dotting the grounds to the dining hall full of families and foodfight instigating kids and the greeter, Tom, who after about 40 years as Greeter still speaks in a charming Scottish accent and smiles as you spoon up your mashed potatoes... from the arts and crafts buildilng where tye-dyed t-shirts are forever hanging out to dry and the waterfront where kids swim, sail, flip canoes and kayaks (I used to be the one to haul them back in, waterlogged and apologetic...) and work on their tans... to the music that floats from the huge tent in the summer out over Lake Geneva during Music by the Lake concerts. This place is magical. I worked at this camp for four summers and I think I'll always be nostalgic for those years. In all my time there, I've never met a camper who was ready to go when their week was up. Even the kid who sliced his foot open at the waterfront on a zebra mussel and had to get stitches - he was back down at the dock the next day, asking me to look the other way while he did a backflip into the lake (against the rules, but whatever...) Camp rocks. Unfortunately, Aurora University (an actual college in Illinois) bought it out about five years ago and is now in the process of phasing out all the summer camping groups which makes me incredibly sad. The "camp" will now be known primarily as a "college" where people can get masters degrees in things like education and music and recreation. Which is fine and all. Just one of those things you wish could last forever.

I was enrolled in the BSW program for my junior year from 2021-2022. I commuted and did not live on…read morecampus. I am transferring to a new college. The best part of this college is the professors; they genuinely cared about my wellbeing and success. They are good people with good hearts. Unfortunately, at least half of my professors seemed unprepared to teach (meanwhile the other half were truly amazing with a wealth of information). Despite having career credentials, it didn't always translate to academic expertise. Some professors seemed like they were just reading the books along with me and it was their first time teaching. Overall, the BSW program lacked academic vigor and overly focused on soft-skills. It was easy to get A's without learning much. I'm frankly worried about some of the students that will end up as social workers. The campus/student body is very small. The grounds are well maintained and pretty, but with so few buildings it feels constrictive. Leaving campus doesn't offer escape as the surrounding area is very rural without much social activity. There is virtually no social-scene at GWC. Students are overall friendly (I met some great people), but with so few students it feels limited. The worst part of GWC is the non-academic/student life administration. I was heavily involved in clubs and student council until I realized the admin were not on my side. They do not listen to or advocate for students. They are extremely concerned with image and protect it at all costs. Concerns raised by students get covered up, ignored, or worse. For voicing my concerns with admin about them being overly controlling with student clubs (having to approve every pin, t-shirt, flyer, participant, ect.), I was challenged to step down from leadership. I requested to meet with admin on three occasions to reach a resolution and was ignored every time. Another student who tried to voice an concern about a food staff member making inappropriate comments was told to stop bringing it up and "it isn't your place", despite being on the student council. I do not recommend GWC. Many students don't want to be there and only stay for the good financial aid. It wasn't a terrible experience, but there wasn't much to make me want to stay.

I spent a few weeks up at George Williams as part of Music By the Lake. They have a cute little…read morecampus with a decidedly rustic/camp feeling. They have a beautiful woodsy setting and an absolutely GORGEOUS lakeside beach and dock. We spent days swimming in the lake and lounging on the dock and evenings rehearsing in the gorgeous Ferro Pavillion (bring bug spray!). It seems in the summer the college plays host to lots of groups....SOAR, Nike Gold Camps, etc. For treats the campus dinning hall is okay, but the College Inn boasts snacks and hand scooped ice cream (yum!). During the day you can lounge lake side or in the green Adirondack chairs at the Administration Building and catch up on a good book. At night you can light a fire in one of the fire pits and toast marshmallows. Concerts in the Ferro Pavilion are just beautiful and romantic as well. A definite stop if you're in the area or looking for a unique summer experience.
