A standard Holiday Inn in downtown Dubuque. Walking distance to good food and drinks, coffee, art museum and the Fenelon Elevator. Make sure you get out and support the local places nearby, because the bartender at the hotel bar couldn't have cared less if we were there. Another small issue was the parking lot was being remodeled and we had to park a block away in a public lot. Rooms were clean, a/c worked well and water pressure was good. read more

First of all, this room - in Dubuque, IA!!! - was $238. Insane. Amenities? A small, dirty pool. They don't even have vending machines, instead making you buy any and all things from the shop in the lobby, marked up 2-3x their usual cost. The room itself was fine. Standard hotel room. The view for $238? A brick wall. Anyway... The bathroom was filthy. There were smudges, dirt, and, best of all, hair all over - much of it short and curly. The floor looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. The shower curtain made the entire bathroom stink like mildew. One of the washcloths was visibly dirty. I didn't even want to step on the floor. I did complain and they offered nothing and I'm a rewards member, sooooo...skip this gross hotel! read more

On the plus side, first. Great location and a good alternative to the more expensive and children infested Grand Harbor Resort. They're not really in the same class, the Grand Harbor is worth the higher per room cost because it's a classier place, newer, more amenities, but it has an indoor waterslide park. So, if you're attending a meeting at the Grand River Conference Center and you DON'T have kids, the Holiday Inn is a more peaceful choice. The Holiday Inn does have a small poor and game room, so there were a few relatively well behaved children that did not bother me at all. The train did not wake me up. The front desk staff is excellent, all shifts. I especially liked that they warned me that there would be no daily housekeeping unless I requested it. This made me behave differently with the towels of course, and I was able to get an extra little shampoo in the wasteful little plastic bottle from the front desk. Unlike the Grand Harbor Resort, the Holiday Inn is walking distance to the post office, the Funicular (a must see). Like the Grand Harbor, the Holiday in is walking distance to the National Mississippi Museum and Aquarium (a should see), and the Grand River Conference Center and Mississippi Riverwalk. Parking is convenient, and there's free, decent coffee in the lobby every morning along with a free local newspaper. They allow dogs, so I met a couple of nice ones. There's a shuttle service only I don't know where it goes or why. The room was neat with adequate electrical outlets, lighting, and the environmental controls handled the near 100 degree Fahrenheit high humidity weather well. Water pressure was great, and tasted fine. And last but not least, this hotel is walking distance to Dottie's Diner. This is one of only a couple of hotels that have king sized beds. On the negative side, I don't like that hotels like this are using COVID19 as an excuse to not have enough housekeeping. There was obviously no "deep cleaning" going on, there was a lot of dust on the bed headboard, the window sill, and a few other places that were pretty visible and noticeable. I was up on the third floor and there were ants crawling up the desk. I don't mind ants as long as they aren't in the bed, but it's evidence of cursory cleaning, they were following a scent trail. The bathroom was good except for the peculiar skinny bathtubs. I've never seen the like. It's worth it to stay in this hotel just to see the odd half width bathtubs. No recycling in the rooms, and lots of plastic. There was a Keurig and those are wasteful. The coffee they make isn't good and that fad is long over. There's no regular housekeeping during your stay, so there should have been more than one lone coffee pod, or better yet, bring back the old drip coffee makers with some real coffee. Although it's an easy walk to the river, the conference center, and the museum-aquarium in terms of distance, there's this train that block the path regularly and sometimes for hours. The way around requires ignoring Google Maps and driving. Also, Dubuque isn't that pedestrian friendly, there are hardly any crosswalks. The restaurant is kind of mediocre, but there are plenty of alternatives within easy walking distance. However, the food at the other restaurants, for the most part, aren't significantly better. All in all, I would say that the Holiday Inn is worth the price, and for my money, the best choice in town. read more

Emily noticed and reminded me of the room specifics. So nice. She also set us in for breakfast for the next day since I neglected to do so when making my reservation online. First off let me say that everyone working behind the front desk was wonderful. Very helpful and friendly. The location and size of the room was good. The beds, covers and pillows were outstanding. Now here's what failed. Housekeeping. I first noticed it when I went to pull a tissue out of the container. The plastic box was full of dust plus only a couple of tissues left in the box. I set the almost empty box to the side thinking room service would replace the tissues the next day. I then cleaned the plastic box. I then noticed all the splashes if what not all over the bathroom mirror. Under the large vanity are beautiful white fluffy towels. They are aii sitting on shelves that are so filled with dust that you could write your name on it. This include the bottom shelf where the hair dyer is. On the floor under the vanity was visible remnants of what appeared to be a cotton ball. The hairs on the bathroom floor my husband picked up with toilet paper. Other than the sink, tub and toilet the bathroom was filthy. Moving on to the main room the cabinet that the TV was on was just as full of dust as the bathroom vanity. The following day after returning from an outing we returned to our room to find that it had never been serviced. We even said hello to the woman cleaning on our floor when we left. Aside from the obvious this now meant that we had no clean towels, no clean plastic cups, no coffee and coffee cups and no tissues. We went to the front desk to ask for these items. To add insult to injury there was a card in our room to inform us of how clean the rooms are. Signed by someone in Housekeeping. I really like this hotel. Too bad there seems to be no accountability as to ensuring that all rooms meet the standards in which they promote. read more

Not a new hotel, and at times showed its age. But sometimes it nice to find a comfortable hotel with reasonable prices in a great location. Rooms are comfortable and clean with updated amenities. Pool is small and so is the hot tub. Never ate or drank at the attached bar, but I did eat breakfast. It was not free, but it was made to order and very good. I'm pretty sure that on weekdays you can add the breakfast to your room rate for just a few bucks. All downtown restaurants and bars are pretty much walkable, so are all the theaters. One of the casinos is a short trip over the bridge. Staff has always been friendly. read more

This hotel is convienantly located for anything downtown. It has a nice parking garage attached (that can get really full during any event there) and a small turn around area at the front of the entrance. When walking in, I thought, this looks rather nice for an older hotel. The front desk people were very kind. We got to our room, which ended up being right next to the elevator, and opened the door. The room was rather outdated and smelled a bit. It was freezing cold. The bathroom has been updated and was very nice but the rest of the room just didn't match. We had a wonderful view (insert sarcasm) of the rooftop, over the lobby entrance. The ironing board had no padding left. The doors were super thin as we heard everything out in the hall. We heard dogs barking, people shouting, people having normal conversations, etc. The elevator hum was constant. We could even hear the people talking that we shared the wall with. The TV was even confusing. Not how to turn it on, but how the heck to get off the menu page. Just not user friendly. I was happy we stayed only one night. Lucky for us, that night was "free" due to my reward points. No way would I spend the money to stay here again. read more

2.5 stars. Staff (with the exception of the bartender who was great), were less than engaging. Never rude, would have been nice to see one smile or say hello. Room was, let's say, upper scale Super 8. Room was clean. Bathtub you could barely stand in, very narrow, never been in a bathtub that narrow. Despise it when you have to put your towel on the toilet because there is no where to hang it when you shower (EWWW). Pool was to cold to swim in. No reason to say anything to staff with the lack luster responses we were receiving. Hot tub is a joke, maybe fit 2 adults in it. First and most likely our last stay. My son and daughter-in-law got married this past weekend and I was so impressed with the entire wedding banquet staff. The catering sales manager, Shelby Siderewicz went above and beyond to exceed our expectations. We do not have one complaint about the wedding reception experience. The food was amazing, the staff was over the top accommodating and the bartenders, Kelly and Joe were were very fun and provided top notch service!!! Well, it's your typical hotel room, nothing special about it. The bathroom looks nice & updated, but the shower was bizarre! The tub is up really high, and slanted awkwardly, (I can't think of any other way to explain it!), and the shower head is also pretty low compared to how high the tub is. I'm not tall by any means, but I had to bend awkwardly to even rinse my hair. The biggest negative: When I checked in, I gave the woman behind the counter my name and she said "ok, 2 queen beds, non smoking", ummm no. I booked 1 king bed, non smoking. She dismissed me saying that I must be wrong because those rooms have been sold out for a long time and I had made the reservation at the beginning of February. I told her when I called to book my room I was offered 2 queen beds, or 1 king, and she said there's no way that could be correct because SHE was the one that took the reservation. I wasn't going to stand there and argue with her, and she was getting quite rude, so my new husband and I had an extra bed in our room. I guess it's not really a big deal, but it's the fact that she screwed up our reservation and then tried to argue with me about it and make it sound like I was wrong. Pros: Free parking is always a plus. Good location. Restaurants nearby will deliver to your room! read more

My stay at this hotel was an unexpected one. My plane was diverted from Chicago to the Dubuque airport to refuel. Once we arrived they decided not to continue the flight that night and had to put up the entire plane full of travelers. 50 rooms were booked for all of us at the Holiday Inn and they started shuttling us to the hotel in groups to get settled in. The hotel staff was GREAT with this short notice and got everyone checked in quickly and efficiently. I presented my rewards card with my voucher when I landed and was offered a free drink or extra point and I took the drink after the travel I'd had that day!! :) The room was spacious and clean...plenty of room for a few hours of sleep! The restaurant normally closes at 9 or 10 but stayed open till midnight to help out the travelers and get us all fed and happy :) The wait staff was great. Friendly and helpful! In the morning, the clerk checking out people was extremely friendly and got things taken care of. There was coffee waiting as well. Wifi was free as well! read more

Had I not been traveling with my dog I would have stayed at Hotel Julien as it sounded and looked much nicer. I found the Holiday Inn a little pricey...$150 a night for a king room was a little high for what it was. While I wasn't expecting four star quality, it did come up short based on some of the higher reviews. Upon checking out of the hotel we found that our car was vandalized when retrieving it from the lower level of the hotel parking lot. It appeared as though a skateboarder went across our hood leaving and nice hand print with dents where the wheels hit, and scratches going across. Earlier my husband had seen some skateboarders skating in the public parking lot next door, so our guess is they were in our hotel parking lot as well. We decided to call the police to file a report for insurance purposes. When the police officer arrived he spoke with the hotel manager and asked if they had surveillance cameras. The hotel manager said that they had removed the garage cameras because the picture was so bad that it wasn't worth having them...um, perhaps install better camera's? Here's the good, the bad and the ugly: +Dog friendly +Free wifi +Nice location in historic district, close to Galena and restaurants +Friendly staff +Room appeared clean -Paper thin walls (I was awoken by high pitched child talking/playing and later screaming at 7am, oy! It was so loud I thought he was in the hallway, but when I opened the door I didn't see anyone, I then realized he was in the room next door.) -Even though the room appeared clean it had a musty smell and the windows didn't open, ick. -Elevators are old, smelly and slow. -Hotel looks like it was last updated in the late 80s/early 90's? -While the staff was all very friendly, don't expect great dining recommendations. At the front desk were two college-aged females who suggested Applebee's and a local bar that serves pizza for late dining. We eventually found better late dining at Crust only a block away from the hotel. - - -Park in the hotel parking garage at your own risk! This garage is open to the public, there are no security cameras, and my car was vandalized while parked here. Not a great ending to a blah hotel experience. read more

We are in town for a travel baseball tournament, received a group rate of $154.00 a night plus taxes and fees. Front desk was polite but I was not pleased they "add" 20% on to the total cost for incidentals. I did not want to authorize that and was told it is how the booking is charged. I'm not sure if this is something new or just at this location but I do not recall being charged a fee up front at other hotels. Not pleased. I have attached a picture of the pool, it is hands down the smallest pool I have seen in a hotel. Rooms are clean but nothing special. I will update this post and star rating if things improve we are here through the memorial weekend. Had the breakfast buffet on Sunday morning, food was like warm at best. Very disappointed in our stay. 1 star happy! read more

Just five floor get breakfast

It is an older holiday inn and definitely can use an upgrade. It is centrally located in downtown Dubuque and there are plenty of options for restaurants and bars in the area. The rooms were clean. The wifi was fast but the beds need new mattresses or less lumps. They have a parking lot and they serve a good breakfast in the morning. I will most likely stay there the next time I am in Dubuque but how often can that be. read more

I had the whirlpool room and it was awesome. Now the hotel is an older hotel, they have tried to update the rooms, but they really need to be remodeled. My room had peeling paint, holes, etc. I wasn't extremely happy with the room besides the whirlpool, even at that, it was a huge bath, but the controls were around the corner and it was a pain to keep setting the 15 minute timer. The bath itself is aged and had wear marks all over it. The internet WIFI is the slowest of the bunch! Speed tests don't even give it 1MB U/D I was in the 500k range, and for a hotel that advertises High Speed Internet, you would think they could deliver. It is sad that my phone was faster. I could get over the older hotel, and they could have got a better rating, but I am disappointing about the Internet and the lack of maintenance. The restaurant here was decent. We stopped in for dinner the first night and had a bite to eat. I had the grilled chicken/grilled shrimp combo with extra veggies. They were good, but needed to be seasoned. I'm a fan! I booked this for $89 on IHG.com the week before my visit. It was the "non refundable" rate so there was no backing out. It's a little bit of a gamble but that was a really good rate for this hotel! I'll be staying here again when I'm back in Dubuque. We stayed last Friday for the second time. We checked-in after a long drive and asked for a quiet room. Everything was fine until about midnight when the people next to us started banging on the wall and making " farm type " noises. We finally got to sleep around 2 am after putting on a Thunderstorm ap (a travelers best friend). The reason we are giving this hotel 3 stars is because the first time we stayed it went well and because the location is great if you're in Dubuque and the issues we faced had very little to do with the actual hotel. Great location and decent place, but don't go anywhere near the restaurant. No sense of customer service at all on the food and bar side. On both days it took over 20 minutes to get someone to even bring you water and coffee in the morning, and snippy wait staff if you tried to get their attention. There was a line at the front desk of people asking for refunds for their breakfast vouchers because even though they were not full, they could not handle the tables (2 days in a row). Then getting lunch in the bar area, needed to continually try to get the bartender away from typing on his cell phone to get a menu, to order, to get a drink refill. Maybe they should give you his cell number to text him, as that's the only way to get his attention. Oh, and the TV kept cutting out in the room and the Wifi was too slow to load a page for the majority of the weekend. Could be a really great place if they had someone in there to manage the service end of things. read more

Do not spend your money here!!! Not only do the rooms smell funny, but the staff will not care if your experience was terrible. Our room was next door to a room with a jacuzzi. The jacuzzi was up against the wall where our beds were located. Our bed shook and the noise/vibration was intolerable. After we tried to switch rooms, we were told that the hotel had no other rooms. We decided that we'd rather leave than face a sleepless night in an overpriced room. From the phone call, our packing, and the walk to the front desk, it was a total of 15 minutes. When we got to the front desk, they magically had a room for us. Who wants to move rooms at 11 pm?? Absolutely no customer service. read more

The rooms are clean and everything works. The staff is very friendly and helpful no matter what time of the day I've come in. The location is great with tons of food options nearby. This place was the worst wedding experience I have ever had! AVOID !!!!!!!!!! I've never been so disappointed in my life. My sisters wedding was a disaster here. From being lied to about room prices, having to get ready in a conference room, being left at the port because they forgot to pick the wedding party back up & being late to the reception to the guest eating first while the bridal party sat and watched. Even the rooms weren't in the best of shape, black duck tape on the bathroom doors, broken air conditioner that wouldn't turn off. I ended up reserving a room at the Julian I refused to stay there, such low class. read more

Ripped off. Was given a total when I booked with the front desk but when I arrived I received a different price. I asked about the price difference and was told it's just a security deposit. The next day I needed to add an extra night to my stay and asked what the rate was and was told rates are the same every night. When I received my receipt at the end of my stay they had raised my rate by $50 each night and I asked about that and they only discounted $50 from one of my nights. read more

The room served its purpose for my family...a last minute jaunt so my 8 y/o could get a live look at the Mississippi and get a little swimming in. The pool was tiny and COLD. Not just its the middle of winter and it may be a little cold to the touch but COLD that my 2 y/o had to come out after 3 minutes because she was shaking with blue lips. Work-out facility is not bad compared to other hotels in the area = more machines + clean. The big downside was no continental breakfast unless you get a room on the 5th floor. For the price they charge, they could have had done a lot of renovations already. Everything is old, and worn. Clean, although the carpet in our tiny room was wet from the air conditioner. Funny, we had the coffeemaker in the bathroom. (jajaja) The breakfast was not included, which added my annoyance with the accommodations and the price we had to pay. The staff at the cafeteria made me wait for quite some time at the "wait to be seated" sign. I was standing there with my baby in my arms, and people just staring at me. At some point, I started thinking, I was not supposed to wait upfront. No one was attending me. Finally, the woman came by, and matter-of-factly asked me if it's for one. No apologies for making me stand there and wait (with a baby in arms.) And the pool is tiny. The hot tub, is very personal (maybe for two if they're skinny). read more

Great experience! We booked a king room and clearly got a renovated room. Bathroom was gorgeous, bed was huge and very comfortable, and the room was very modern. The pillows were great quality with options of firm or soft. We didn't want to get up! We booked this hotel in particular because we wanted to use a hot tub in a pool area rather than paying for one in our room. We headed to the pool late around 1030 to discover the jets weren't working. I went to the front desk to ask and they just kind of shrugged like oh someone must have messed it up. Out of nowhere appears John the maintenance guy who goes out of his way to go to the basement to fix it for us. It's people like that that make an experience go from a semi- disappointing 3 star to a thrilled 5 star. Whatever progress they are making as far as remodels go they are headed in the right direction. The lobby and our room were beautiful, the pool area could use an update. I can't say for sure if all the rooms are like ours but just be sure to ask I suppose. Would definitely go back to venture around the heart of Dubuque and stay here again. read more
