We were a little unsure of this place when we first arrived ( my husband booked for a weekend getaway). The house was dark and at first no one came to greet us at the door (it's locked unless you know the code to get in). We were eventually greeted by the host and shown around this beautiful Victorian home built by a well known family to the Dubuque area. They did a great job restoring and you truly feel as though you took a step back in time. We stayed in the Doll Room - which I told my husband likely had the old dolls... and it did. However, the beautiful jacuzzi tub overlooking downtown Dubuque made it worth it. Our room had its own bathroom and heating/cooling unit as well. In the morning we enjoyed a delicious breakfast made by the host - croissant blueberry French toast bake with eggs, hash browns, sausage, and beverages. This was a new experience for us - we would definitely recommend!

Exactly what we needed. As you can imagine this inn is sparsely populated during the pandemic. My husband and I needed a place to stay in Dubuque that we knew would be quiet, quaint and not so crowded right now. We found the Hancock house to be perfect. I could spend all day and night on the porch the view is impeccable! The host was very welcoming and made sure we had our questions answered and everything we needed. The house is incredible and our room was very comfortable. We stayed in the train room on the third floor, it has a private bathroom with incredible antique details, excellent windows and it's own thermostat so we could customize the temperature to our liking. I cannot wait to come back to this inn when social distancing is not so important and more people are around.

We lucked out on Air BnB when we came across this spot for our anniversary weekend away. This is a beautiful, well maintained historic house. We stayed in the train room which was once a little boys play room. The owner, Simon, is a wealth of information and his passion for the building comes through when ever he talks about its history. Just a 20 min scenic drive from Galena but without the cost of staying in Galena. If you're planning on visiting Galena and want the BnB experience - this is the way to do it. And the breakfasts are awesome!

    Beautiful room!

Amazing place. Beautiful view and great location. Spent just one night there but it was an amazing one night. The owners made me feel right at home. Susan makes these incredible cookies. There is a little sitting room in the front of the house that has a little telescope looking into town. BEAUTIFUL HOME! Very clean place....

Breakfast was great, as were the home baked treats that could be found throughout the day. The bad: there was only wine and soda in the fridge. No ice and no water. The common areas were cluttered. I don't care to stay someplace and see piles of junk on the floor. I stepped into the kitchen at one point to look for some ice for my tea and the cleanliness of the kitchen was very questionable. Food had been left out of the fridge on the counter, and it was the middle of the day. Against my better judgement I DID have breakfast the next day and I haven't gotten sick, so there IS that! The ugly: I am very sensitive to smells and there was a heavy presence of cat urine. I just couldn't escape it. i never saw a cat, but I sure did smell it! The curtains in our room were falling apart and they were all water stained. I could look past all of that, but when I discovered what the pillows looked like I was done and we left a day early. The pillows were not encased in a protective cover before they were placed in a pillowcase and they were all stained and disgusting, one even had a hole in it. Even that didn't phase me too much, but when I helped myself to a pillow case that I found in the hall closet it looked like there was a booger on it and I just lost it. We were not given any kind of hassle when we checked out early and it would be my guess that we were not the first. As others have mentioned the outside looked like something out of a horror movie, but I obviously wasn't put off by it as we did check in. According to past reviews the renovation of the front porch has been going on for YEARS, and it looks pretty trashy. If you don't mind all that I mentioned, by all means stay, but I will not stay again. If you can get past the cat smell and the disgusting pillows and the dirty kitchen, it IS a beautiful B&B. I need to note that it took me a long time to write this review. It really IS beautiful, and the owners really are lovely people, but I just couldn't not say something. Had everyone else that has written reviews been totally honest, I probably would not have stayed there. This place could be SO much better with a little more care.

Lovely ambiance of jazz always playing seems comforting in so many ways. The hostess ate breakfast with me and helped me with photos, directions, advise. She was sincerely lovely. They went out of their way to help me in my travels. Epic hosts, food, complimentary drinks. I have never been to a place this unique. Usually you worry about small things at hotels bc they are so sterile. Here its like staying at your grandparents house or favorite aunt and uncles. I suggest this location to people who love the wholesome things in life without the upper scale crust lingering on your permanent white pillowcases. You don't need to worry about that here. (I would not suggest this to people with serious allergies or extreme standards.) Everything felt comfortable and relaxing. I love it! And I will continue to come back. Best bed and breakfast! Just epic! Perfectly cooked, the best crapes I have ever had. This peach layered cake they made... I can't stop thinking about! You gotta check it out!

When I first saw the listing with the excellent reviews and history of the house I felt this would be a fun place to stay. After spending the four nights my initial feeling was right on. This was the perfect place for our family to stay. Kathy greeted us when we arrived and helped us figure out where to have dinner that first night. We stayed in rooms 10 and 11. Those rooms have their own private bath and are on the second floor. It was as though we had a family apartment. The adults room had a king sized bed and the children shared a queen. Their room had a scavenger hunt within the stone walls, which they really enjoyed. After dinner the boys played table tennis and pop shots basketball. Kathy also treated them to an ice cream cone. Very sweet. There were also plenty of board games to play in the evenings. Breakfast was yummy and coffee aplenty! They do offer WiFi, but no screens, so it is easy to bond with your family and have some quality time together. This location was within walking distance to the swimming pool/park and Pendarvis (which is still closed). It is about a half an hour drive to House on the Rock, Cave of the Mounds, and Taliesin. Lots of fun side stops on the way to any of these places. Kathy is an awesome cook. We feel so fortunate to have met her, Dan, and Bobby Jo on our trip. Mineral Point is a beautiful town and I thank them for preserving and sharing such a wonderful Wisconsin landmark with us.

I don't think there are enough superlatives to describe our experience!
