The hotel needs renovation, which is is getting (as of February 2024). I wish the website would have warned me about that before I reserved a room. It's a bit of a mess right now. I had a serious issue with the customer service here--but to their credit, they resolved it after the fact by providing a full refund. I wouldn't normally expect a refund--but this was the right way to handle our particular problem. So... kudos to the management for taking the right steps to correct an issue. I'm sure this place will be great when the reno project is finished. read more

This hotel is not bad at all. Sumter is a small town with not much to do. The hotel is located on Broad St, which seems to be the town's main, busiest street. This Holiday Inn is located right by Outback and in front of Applebee's. But there are many other commercial and local restaurants nearby. Staff was friendly, the room was clean, and it has decent amenities. They serve complementary breakfast from 6:00 am to 9:30 am on the weekdays. I can't remember the breakfast time for the weekends. Anyways, the only frustrating things about the hotel are the laundry room and the gym. The laundry room is complimentary, but there is only one washer and one dryer. The gym has very little equipment. The indoor pool is nice. The business room has 2 computers and it is rarely in use. There is a business meeting room. The dining area is spacious and comfortable. 3.5 stars but rounding up to 4. I think it's good for what you pay. I would stay here again. read more

Was greeted upon arrival by Craig and he was super friendly. The room is basic, but clean. They offer breakfast and also on some nights a free supper. Last night they had tacos for "Taco Tuesday." I heard a guest say the other night they offered pizza. That is neat! The only complaint I have is that the indoor pool is a good bit cooler than we expected. I am guessing because the A/C blows on it all day. Overall, great stay. read more

The hotel is clean and modern and I have been very happy and comfortable here while I am on business. My shower is super hot and has great water pressure. The staff here has been very friendly. The hotel has free breakfast durng reasonable hours M-F: 6:00am-9:30am; Sat-Sun: 6:30am-10:00am. And I love my morning paper waiting for me outside my room during the weekdays. They have a vending soda and ice machine on my floor. They have a two computer business station. They have a complimentary free laundry service, which on face value seems nice, but it is only one washer and dryer. I have already been by it two times and someone is using it, which is getting frustrating always having to check constantly for a small glimmer of hope that I can do some laundry. They really should have more washers. The hours for the laundry are also from 9:00am-9:00pm, so that is not too helpful either. The other con I have with the hotel is the gym. It's located outside as an attachment off the hotel by the pool, but because of this, it is super muggy and really hot inside. Additionally, it does not have very much equipment, or really any equipment at all, but two treadmills and one elliptical. Overall, I would stay here again. read more

In February I called to make reservations for this coming weekend for two rooms. I asked if we could check in at 2 because we are traveling and have to change clothes for a wedding at 4 (we have to leave the hotel by 3:15). I was told it would likely be fine and they would make a note. I paid $143 and change for each room. Today I went to the website to get their number to call and make sure everything is ok. What do I see? A room rate of $89! I called and was told that their rates vary from 89 to 200 depending on availability. Buyer beware. Also, no note was made about checking in an hour early. We may be changing clothes in the lobby restrooms, idk. read more

We stayed here for a couple days (and by we, I mean like - 10 family members). The last time we stayed there it was under construction, and this time you could see the difference. The room itself was nice and clean, and there was plenty of space. We were all in town from around the country, so obviously we were spending a lot of time together in the "public" areas in the hotel, sometimes well into the night. We never got a single negative comment from any staff or other visitors, and we had all the time in the world to spend time together catching up and reminiscing. The biggest positives about this hotel are: 1. the staff (everyone we came into contact with was super sweet. In fact, I overheard a complaint being made to the front desk that was pretty ridiculous, and she handled it with absolute grace. The guest left happy and felt heard even though it was ludicrous. I was impressed.) 2. the convenient location (plenty of restaurants, only a few miles from Shaw, right near Wal-Mart and other shops) 3. the room size/comfort (spacious room, large comfortable bed, floor space, bigger bathroom, etc) The drawbacks were: 1. the breakfast (biscuits and gravy were ok but it was hard to eat anything else) 2. the noise (we could hear the elevator all day and night, as well as anyone speaking at a normal level in the hallways) 3. the pool (it didn't seem too clean, although my cousins had zero problem hopping in so maybe it was ok!). It was still an overall good experience and they were so accommodating with us. If I'm in town again I'd be happy to book there. read more

This place is actually very nice. It's in a good place in town, close to restaurants. The value was good for what we paid. The rooms are nice, beds are very comfortable. The breakfast in the morning looked better than what it tasted, but it was acceptable. We would go back. read more

Just leaving a bridge crumb so that we don't stay here again. We went a bit off I 95 because we were looking for somewhere to stay but had more than fast food and one restaurant. Sumter is the county seat and it did not disappoint. The young woman at the front desk was very kind and check in was fast. We reserved a king sized bed and that is exactly what we got. There was some kind of stain on the back of the inside of the toilet bowl that looked scummy. Staff said it was from the hard water. The ice machine and soda machine was right inside the front door where they keep the trolleys for guest use. We had already walked to the full length of the hotel looking for an ice machine before the front desk told us where it was. And we were not alone looking for ice. The thing that grossed me out most of all was that the sink in the bathroom did not empty in under 10 minutes and there were a little particles that floated up into the water. It was just gross. I don't know if it was the water - I'm going to give them credit here but the doorhandles also looked like they hadn't been cleaned for a while. The room was presentable but it didn't look like I will expect the room to look for $140 a night. read more

I expected so much better from this place. It was the chosen hotel of a wedding so we got the room for $120 a night but the floors were incredibly slick and oily, the toilets wouldn't flush and were dirty upon arrival, the shower head was corroded and nasty, the room was incredibly musty and smelly for the duration of the stay and the AC wouldn't properly cool the room. The noise level was outrageous between the surrounding rooms and the level of nonsense coming from the parking lot at all hours of the night. I forgot something in my car the night I arrived and I was uncomfortable going back outside to get it due to the rambunctious nature of the people in the parking lot. That's absurd to be afraid to walk to your car. I really love being able to leave positive reviews but my family and I who occupied two separate rooms were searching the area for other rooms at different hotels and were completely willing to lose money here if they wouldn't give us a refund. The only reason they didn't get a 1 star review is because they served a good continental breakfast and because the staff was friendly. It isn't the nastiest place I have ever stay but considering the price I expected to feel comfortable and safe, at least. read more

I did not enjoy this stay. 1. My credit card was charged on the 14th, we arrived on the 16th (3 adults w/ one king and pull out sofa). When returning to our room from dinner, tired from a 6 hour trip, and 11 pm I discovered the pull out had to be made up. I had to go down to the service desk to get linen. The man just plops it in my arms. Oh, I'm sorry. You got your money and now I am a maid? 2. When making up the couch, I found Subway sandwich wrapper by the couch. We didn't eat Subway. 3. When folding up the mattress frame of pull out to get our suitcases out the door this morning, I discovered it was covered with mold or mildew...nasty. 4. The tv/dresser was very dusty. 5. The fan in the BR didn't work, so we had to run the blow dryer, just to clear the mirror. Then, the heat made us feel like we needed another shower. . . not to mention the black stains in the back of the tub. 6. The toilet required multiple flushes and made an awful noise each time it was flushed. I was very disappointed in this stay. Especially, when one first sees the hotel, it appears quite lovely. Of course, when I checked out no one asked me if I enjoyed my stay. I will not stay at a Holiday Inn Express, especially in Sumter, SC, in the future. I would also suggest looking at the room before one rents. PS I did take pictures. read more

Hotel itself is fine. I stayed there four nights. I had issues with my credit card and had to rerun it the second day. However, unknown to me they changed the rate. Upon checking out I found out that the rate changed from $105/night to $170/night. The only explanation that they could give me is that I had an Internet rate which became null and void once I reran my credit card. They could care less to work with me on this and made no attempt to notify me of the rate change. So, beware, they will take shortcuts and take advantage of the customer whenever possible. There are better places to stay. read more

Had to book a room impromptu when I had an extended stay in SC. Was very pleased to find good amenities, clean and comfortable room and courteous staff. All the cable channels and the comfy, warm bed made for a great stay. Definitely recommend. read more

Staff was very pleasant and helpful, especially during a busy check-in time. The desk was well aware of our reservations and had the paperwork and keys ready to go upon arrival. The room was very clean and spacious and contained a small kitchenette. The kitchenette contained a small mini-fridge, microwave and coffee pot. Each room also came complete with a very efficient air conditioner and large flat screen Samsung TV which contained HD cable and HBO. The Hotel came complete with free Wi-Fi and had a small business center that contained computers and other related equipment. Complimentary breakfast was delicious. Meal choices included scrambled eggs, biscuits, gravy, waffles, bacon, sausage, hard boiled eggs, bagels and pancakes. A small variety of cereals was also available. Morning beverages included various coffees, bottled water, orange juice, milk and juice. The breakfast was delicious and offered a wider variety than the other hotels directly around this location. read more
