This is a hotel that has been around for several years and is deteriorating in service. Breakfast bar 815 on a Saturday morning 4 of the 6 hot bar items were empty no coffee no hot water for tea and it took over 15 minutes to get coffee Two staff members just standing in the kitchen area chatting as if they had all day until somebody told them several items on the breakfast bar were empty. Staying here for a work trip for a week. The first thing I get when I walk In is the refusal to take my company BTA card. Whatever it happens, I get to my room and the DOWN GRADED THE ROOM I BOOKED WITHOUT WARNING OR HEADS UP because THEY overbooked. Besides that, the sheets are stained and there was some mysterious brown stain on the toilet seat in my room. This is by no means a luxury hotel. But damn I couldn't get clean sheets and toilet before I paid almost 200 a night?! If you have the option for a motel, I'd suggest them over this place. Elevator cranks and bangs, rooms dirty, old man at front desk is very dismissive. I don't hate life in hotels, but yikes this one takes the cake for worst stay in AWHILE. read more

2-night stay. First night found that the room phone didn't work, so had to call front desk to order servicing for my room next day. No one came to repair or replace room phone for duration of stay. 2nd, found skidmark stains on bottom sheet even after the room had been "serviced." After manager failed to answer my request that she call me, I phoned her after I returned home. No expression of concern or urgency on her part, just the promise that she'd "look into it." Since then she's ghosted me. If you're a fan of broken room phones and skidmark-stained bed sheets, this is the place for you. read more

Nice Hotel. Breakfast staff was so nice. I went down and they had already shut off the juice machine when I inquired they offered to turn it back on. I declined but thanked them. The wifi worked well. I think we were in room 217. The room was nice. I do have a small complaint. In the vent their is an annoying dripping sound that occured throughout the night. Might want to fix that. The beds were comfy and the TV worked well. Overall nice hotel I would stay again. Price was nice read more

$150 (room & fees) per night? If you are planning to stay here, please look elsewhere. I have stayed in hotels for 1/2 this amount with much better amenities. Paint is peeling from the ceiling. Parking lot is very poorly lit. The "Grab and Go: breakfast was a choice of Fruit Loops, Frosted Flakes, a banana, a stale muffin, and a cup of yogurt. My biggest disappointment was talking this trip up with my 3-year-old son, telling him that they had a pool. We tried to use it in the morning but the pool area was just as cold as it was outside (60 degrees). My son and I could only make it in up to our thighs. The water was NOT heated. This on top of having to visit the front desk 3 separate times because our room key quit working several times. Camping would have been more fun. read more

Time to gut and remodel. There's not a whole lot to say here. Really the good does outweigh the bad. I'll start with the good. I only interacted with one staff member, I have to say he was extremely friendly. There's a suite shop right off of the front desk. A nice lounge area and breakfast in the morning. The room itself was nicely sized. Nicely decorated. Good size television. King size bed, lounger and microwave, refrigerator and ironing board. The bathroom setup was a little weird. Bathroom sink right in front of the entryway door and the toilet and shower in their own separate room. The bad. This is formally a hotel that obviously allowed smoking. By the smell of it, either it was a lot of smoking or it wasn't that long ago. There's a certain smell that old stale smoke has. Not like you walked into a room after somebody just smoked a cigarette. But that stale rank smell. Most of the time, I find it embedded into the mattress. This makes it all the more gross. It's earlier in the evening yet and not quite time to go to sleep and I'm dreading having to smell this all night long. This is a huge downer. The smoking ban in Ohio was long ago. There's no excuse for hotel room still smell like this. Would I go back? It's highly unlikely. The bad part is that I limit myself to a few hotel chains and there are not a whole lot of selections in this area. I will say this, if you're sensitive to stale smoke smell, I would avoid this hotel until they do a major upgrade. That's the thing about the Holiday Inn Express chain. They are either beautiful brand-new facilities, or only a few years old, or they are older and in need of a solid refurb. I have found that they can be complete opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to the quality. read more

Our biggest disappointment staying here was the fact this hotel has been going through major renovation/remodeling. When I made reservations a few months ago, there was no mentioning of the hotel being under renovation. However, in their defense, I don't know whether we stayed anywhere else in Mt. Vernon, OH even if we knew it was going through major renovations. Pros: typical HIE complimentary hot breakfast, free wifi, decent TV channel selection, newly remodeled room (therefore, it was very clean looking), very comfortable bed, excellent sleep quality, staff Cons: No swimming pool, No fitness room (equipment), No clothe rack/hangers in room. This will be a very good place to stay in Mt. Vernon once their renovations are complete. read more

Nice place to stay on a visit to Kenyon College. We've stayed here twice now. It seems to be an older property, but, again, nice. Fridge & microwave in the room. Good shower pressure & hot water. Workout room is ok-take headphones to us tv screens on equipment if you want to watch something. Staff is especially nice, helpful & friendly. read more

I stayed here over the past weekend and could not have been more satisfied with my stay. The room was clean and spacious, with lots of power outlets. The bed was comfortable, with options of firm and soft pillows. There was ample space for luggage. The heating/AC unit was powerful and worked quickly. The front desk employees -- especially the night manager, Matthew -- were very friendly. The free Wi-Fi was fast enough for my needs. The free breakfast had a nice variety of foods, relative to what you might expect for a budget hotel's free breakfast. If you are visiting the Mount Vernon area, I would definitely recommend this hotel. read more

I suppose that my review for this hotel is going to suffer in comparison because I stayed at such a great holiday inn express yesterday. This hotel is a complete disappointment. The staff seemed ok, but not interested in my comfort. No cookies or ice water at check in, only the minimal toiletries, none of the little things that help. Both of the ice machines were out of order. My room only had one small place to work and I had to share that with the coffee maker. I almost think that the franchise people haven't visited here in a while. Next time I'm going to try to find some place else. read more

Priced very High for what you get. Rooms were thin, I couldn't sleep as I could hear people walking all night. I felt as If I had to tip toe across the room to save the people below me from discomfort. Construction was going on in the lobby, but that isn't the reason for two star. The staff at this hotel was very friendly and helpful. The rooms have been remodeled and are nice looking. Unfortunately all the remodeling in the world cannot fix the fact that the hotel was constructed so cheaply that you can hear everything happening in the rooms next, above and below you. The price was very high considering what you get. I believe the management is cashing in on the fact that there is not much competition in the area. We came to Mt Vernon for the Earth Day half marathon. This holiday Inn Express was clean and basic. The staff were professional. Not sure what the other posts were complaining about smell or uncomfortable beds??? The place neither smelled of smoke, with us being runners would not be acceptable and the beds were actually really comfortable. Our 2 nights stay was nice for a quick in and out race weekend. Not luxury, but nice. $130 a night was a bit pricey for a basic holiday Inn. But in a small town, pickings are slim and the premium places book up fast. There is a nice new movie theater immediately next door to the hotel which we thought was awesome and super convenient! You can literally walk right over and catch a movie if you want to. read more

I am giving 4 stars for this level of hotel, not because I think it is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. But look at where you are. There are not very many serious options in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Overall it is a reasonable value and better than many at this price point. The service is always exceptional and staff both friendly and professional. The rooms are clean and reasonably modern. The mattresses are a little firm but I found them to be comfortable. The pillows could be a little better but the beds were nicely made up and the mini fridge and microwave are always appreciated. My only real concern might be that, in the summer anyway, the room was quite humid when I opened the door but the A/C resolved that. Just be sure to inquire about possible discounts. If you have AAA, ask about the rate. If you're in town on business, ask about the business rate. This is a college town so the regular rate is higher than you'll see in the middle of nowhere along the expressway... despite still being in the middle of nowhere. read more

My extended family is arriving in the area for my mother's funeral, and naturally, the family would like to stay together at the same facility. Unfortunately, one of my sisters was unable to book a room at the Mt. Vernon Holiday Inn Express, so we elected to move to another Holiday Inn Express where we could all get rooms. I have been unable to get a refund, the facility will not return my calls, and the corporate office says they cannot help. My advice is to avoid this facility and book elsewhere. read more

Not a terrible place to stay but a little tired. Lobby is average as is breakfast area. Though, no complaints. First room I got smelled of smoke (this is a non-smoking hotel and you sign a waiver that states you will not smoke) and was offered $25 off the room plus Febreze. Wasn't enough for me so I asked to change rooms and was accommodated with something comparable. New room was clean and comfortable enough. I was pleased also to see a refrigerator and microwave in the room. (Not typical in this type of hotel). The hotel common spaces were tidy, though stairwell could have used new carpet and a vacuum. Biggest issues for me are that walls are very thin (could hear talking in room next door and footsteps above), Wifi is slow and morning coffee is weak. Front desk staff - while pleasant, was just a card short of a full deck. Complaints aside, I'll likely stay here again when in town b/c price is reasonable for the area. read more
