Holiday Inn, Richmond, IN greets us on arrival

Conveniently location, I70 and HIGHWAY 40, The Historic National Road which is a great alternate to the interstate. The hotel was clean, pool and fitness center were, too. Cracker Barrel was within walking distance and a Shell gas and convenience store down the block. Plenty of well lit parking, I've never had any security problems at this location.

I'd never seen a night light/hair dryer holder combination. So, I guess that's the most interesting thing I could find there.

After reading some Yelp reviews and a phone call to the motel I decided to stop in. Hotel Night staff at check in: Do you mind being on the 4th floor? Me: No...you guys have an elevator, right? Staff: Yes...with a friendly laugh. A nice clean room and bathroom with what one would expect in a nation wide brand motel. Although, the bathroom shower doors could close a little better. Price was reasonable for a king size single bed, which was pretty comfortable too. I had breakfast at the small dinner inside. Definitely not bad, everything was cooked and presented well. I'd compare it to a local dinner with a nice wait staff. I even did some laundry there and the machines were clean and worked. That's everything.

I was very disappointed in my stay. I stayed at this hotel a few years ago when I was visiting family and had no issues. When I arrived, the lobby seemed clean and the staff was nice. When I entered my room, it smelled like stale cigarette smoke or maybe mildew - it wasn't pleasant. The footstool was dirty and looked like someone had bled on it or spilled something red at some point. But none of this compared to the fact that at 11pm another guest of the hotel entered my room. He was just as surprised to see me as I was to see him and he apologized profusely. I got a call 10 minutes or so later from the front desk associate, Kaye, who seemed to be confused about what room she put me in. She seemed to be fixing whatever mistake she made in her computer system while she was on the phone with me. Honestly, at that point I couldn't sleep and ended up checking out a few hours later and driving home. Definitely would not recommend this hotel.

I called to see if there was availability here as I was on the road and the front desk person assumed me that I didn't need to give her my credit card at that very moment. Half an hour later, my dog and I were checked in quickly. The room was fine. The bed was comfy and the sheets were very silky. This location is so close to the interstate that you can see and hear the road noise. The HVAC fan in this room (319) starts up with a whine that woke me several times during the night. The toilet require you hold down the flusher so the bowl clears. I didn't realize that breakfast wasn't included, oh, well. When I was checking out, a maintenance worker and the front desk lady were so gosh darn nice that they get another star. There are a clutch of hotels right here (Hampton Inn, Best Western, Home2 Suites, Motel 6, Travelodge) but I generally find Holiday Inn to be a good balance of value and comfort, despite the minor issues with this one.

I must say that our experience at you facility was terrible. I called in advance - since we were traveling with our little dog - just to make sure the hotel was pet friendly. I was greeted by a person on the phone (named "O'Neil") who answered all my questions with one word replies. At no time did he mention that the hotel was "under construction/renovation." As we checked into the hotel - his demeanor was no better. As an FYI - when an employee works in the "hospitality business" ........that employee should be "hospitable" to customers. That was out introduction to your hotel. Upon checking into our room (Room 246) - my wife and I were shocked at the room condition. I've attached photos: - Entrance to room was not vacuumed - Bathroom vanity was covered in paint stains - Light on top of bathroom mirror was cracked - Walls in bathroom were cracked and in need of repair - Piping was rusted and covered with paint - Air filter over shower was filthy (possible mold) - Towel used for shower floor was ripped (I've used better towels for rags) - Door jam at entrance was cracked To make matters even worse - my wife and I had been traveling for over 12 hours. We were exhausted. I went down to the lobby to ask O'Neil if he could give us a cup of milk. He told me the hotel had no milk. That was a lie. Upon speaking to Everton & Dina the next morning - they informed me that milk is available - but hotel policy is to not share it with guests. I can understand this (although I've traveled extensively in my career - and I've never asked for a cup of milk before and been lied to and refused). Most vending machines were out of order (see photos). Signs in the hotel stated "Please Excuse Our Dust." I can honestly say that I've never been in a hotel in such poor condition in my life. If renovations were being made - I should have been notified in advance. Additionally, I should have not been assigned to a room that clearly was not in acceptable condition. To be fair - I place no blame with the cleaning staff assigned to our room. I'm sure they were doing what they could with a substandard room. I spoke to Everton on the morning of checkout. He was very nice and helpful. I also spoke to Dina - who made notes regarding my experience. On a final note - my wife and I went to the breakfast "buffet" on the way out. Equipment was out of order - and the orange juice from the dispenser was rancid (with a brownish color).

My daughter and I stayed in the first floor room that was the home's original dining room, and it was so pretty with lovely wood paneling around the doors and ceiling, a beautiful large tiffany window, and perfectly chosen furnishings. I was able to see several of the upstairs rooms as well and they too were very nice. The breakfast was delicious with the best orange juice I've had in years. If we should ever make our way back to Indiana, we'll definitely stay here again. One additional note: the town of Richmond IN is FULL of gorgeous old Victorian houses that could be refurbished into veritable palaces, much like the Smith B&B. There are also charming cottages from the early 1900s. In a way, it reminds me of Savannah GA in that there are so many lovely historic properties. If historic preservation/renovation is your thing, (and you're lucky enough to be retired or to telework full time), you should definitely check it out.
