Great food store in tiny Chester. Helpful staff. Huge stock of everything I wanted.

Large supermarket with meat, groceries and all kinds of the usual stuff. Seems exactly like a Safeway.

After several years of shopping at Holiday Market I have grown to understand that their meat…read moredepartment is seriously lacking. They don't subscribe to the usual country-wide USDA meat standards at all, instead push some off brand "sterling silver" stuff that they call the top 2/3ths of choice meats. They don't label things (like everywhere else) as select, choice or prime. That's the USDA standard across the USA. I discovered WHY they don't do that--they don't want to invest in a trained meat grader. It takes money to achieve the USDA standards. So if you buy any beef from them it's a complete gamble. Toss your dice, instead of your money away. I called them three times to get the manager's attention to this problem but she never bothered to return my calls. If you break down and buy their stuff just be prepared to have to return it--they don't trim the excessive fat off anything. Their logic--force the buyer to have to pay for it. Being choice fundamentally means we are being denied the ability to purchase quality beef at all from Holiday Market. Apparently it's quite common for customers to have to return meats. Other than beef, we have discovered other meats to be spoiled--literally rotten. Fortunately, it was so rotten we avoided eating it so as not to get food poisoning. On the positive side Holiday Market has a great in-store pharmacy and excellent employees (other than a non-responsive manager).

I get all the inflation, etc, but when i can buy the same item in Chico or Susanville for much less, it's not inflation. Example: an Amy's frozen meal at Holiday is about $6.49, $5.89 in Chico. A pack of Oscar Meyer Hot dogs is $5.49, $1.99 in Chico. Lemons are .69 or more each. $.40 in Chico. The list goes on and on. Some products are increased as much as dollar or more at a time. That's not inflation, as much as corporate greed. They have Whole Food prices to sell to tourists in the summer, but we locals have to pay the high prices all year long. I'm disappointed.

Pretty decent store. But....ahhh, there's always a but when you don't make 5 stars…read more Amanda and Sailor--- in the deli section making sandwiches and etc? Here's the deal. It seems to me, ladies, that you should know that forks and napkins and spoons are essential to the deli business. After walking around and not finding any, you can imagine that the average Joe or...Jodi might be mildly annoyed. Not ticked..., not upset, just --you know kind of like a fly buzzing. No biggie. Upon asking for a spoon, you advised something to the effect that "you have to ask for spoons ..........now.....?" Whatever. After sitting down to my hot chicken soup, I noticed I didn't have a napkin. Back to the counter. "Excuse me, ma'am, any napkins?" Now I am 58. You? Well gentlemen don't ask nor do they venture to guess. Suffice it to say, I am older. So, the appropriate response ....I think, would be to say "very sorry, sir" or "one moment please and I'll help you out." Instead, w/o even looking at me you said...."--go over to Starbucks." So, now you mix in that annoyance with the fact that I can't find a dang napkin, had to search for a spoon and it's become a "double --maybe a triple whammy" if you will. (Depends on how you count, e.g., attitude, and whether you count the napkin and the spoon separately). I wandered over to Starbucks again and can't find napkins. NAAPPPPKINS! They're not in plain site, that's for sure. So back to the counter. I make a point this time of looking at your name tags. I ask, "can you please get some napkins" to which you respond "we're out, that's why I sent you over to Starbucks." OK, back over to Starbucks. I wait for the lady to finish with her frappe-whatever for a customer and ask for a napkin. She advised that they're back around the corner. Hidden in my view.....but----whatever, my soup's getting cold. Aside from the customer-service niceties and the fact that the deli is out of key utensils .....aside from the fact that Amanda and Sailor didn't seem to give a rat's behind....nor, apparently the store management, HERE IS WHAT GIVES ME HOPE!!!!!! Sailor tracked me down! !!!!!!! Yup!!!! She sought me out. I was at Starbucks sipping soup. She didn't apologize. Nor, did she smile . But, she did walk over to Starbucks where I was having my soup and asked why I looked at her nametag --which is not your everyday name--Sailor. I told her I just wanted a napkin. She advised again that she didn't have any. I said ---ok, thank you. But, the fact that she searched me out suggests she CARES. Perhaps there were other motives. Perhaps she was pissed that I dared to get her name. But, I choose to believe she CARES. In the future Amanda and Sailor.....I know work can be a drudgery....and people who are having bad days can add to your own difficulties....but; suck it up butter cup!!!! Smile. Try to be helpful. Smoke and joke with the customers dragging their feet in a funk. I'll bet if you make someone smile.....you'll feel better. That's all. Now get some forks, spoons, and napkins out. And if the manager says he doesn't have any; you might use it as your first joke to a customer who will look at you, relate, and be totally in synch with how you're feeling. Remember. Smile . It'll pay off.

Unfortunately, we just couldn't find anything that tickled our fancy and opted to go find a restaurant instead. We fully understand that a smaller footprint supermarket cannot carry everything a larger store can. The customer base can't support it and it simply wouldn't be profitable. However, there is no excuse that staffing in the deli department can't spend two minutes a hour to stir the prepared salads. Nothing is less appealing than when the outer layer forms a "crust" giving the impression that the food is not "fresh". You can easily see a difference in texture and color between the portion of the salad that has not been touched compared to the portion of the salad that has been served from. Pass.

I asked for baby pastel colors, clearly not what I got! Horrible decorations. The cake itself was good.

Sorry in advance for not knowing the gentleman's name who was helping from the Westwood store, but…read morehe was awesome (name tags are important). So two reviews about one bad experience you had in this one particular Dollar General? That gives you the right to call this place crap and make the employees feel like crap? They're people too, and when you leave garbage reviews they're gonna work like you treat them. Aside from that, this crew is not anything close to a "one star review". They were open normal hours on Thanksgiving. Any other stores in the area stay open regular hours on a national HOLIDAY?? Didn't think so. So when you leave reviews like that, remember that these people have names. And people with names tend to have feelings. JADE works hard. KAYLA works hard. SIERRA works hard. Rae is fairly new so she'll get there. But she's cool. And the younger gentleman that always helps me out? He knows who he is. He's just as awesome. Remember, name tags are important. Point is, all of these people show up to work to provide what other stores can't. And if they say then can, they're literally LYING to your face. Want proof? Check the pics. But enough ranting. Be nicer to people in general. No pun intended. Stop leaving one star reviews just cuz you're mad at one incident. That hurts people, still. And it sticks because here we are, with the third review for this store on yelp, and only ONE MAN, stepped up and backed up what he said WE should do. Anyway, RC Cherry is the best. Dollar General in Chester is the only store I've ever seen have it in the last 6 months, two separate times. They don't even carry it in Arizona anymore. Trust me, I was there.

1 checker for this many people?!? Come on!! This place is poorly stocked, dirty and super slow.read more
