Took our 9 year old Rottweiler Murphy went in for sick visit thinking it was a sprained leg that then turned into a diagnosis of very aggressive bone cancer. Dr Glenn was amazing and very empathetic and thorough in explaining all options. We took him home for about a month before decided it was time to let him go. Front desk was so quick with being able to get him in to schedule his transition and ALL the staff were so kind, understanding and helpful in this hard time. The process itself was so easy going and we were allowed to spend all the time we wanted and needed before he passed, private entrance to leave... it was very helpful. We chose private cremation and had no idea what to expect (first time with dog passing as an adult) but I was blown away with what all was included with our dogs ashes. We set up an appointment as one was ready for his shots to be updated. Booking the appointment was easy and we headed down for our appointment a couple of days later. The staff was friendly, our vet was great with our dog and they took a real interest in him and his healthcare. Our 13+ year old rescued 3-legged Golden Retriever "Tricycle" developed arthritis from the challenges posed from hopping on his one front leg most of his life. Despite doing all we could to mitigate his condition, last night he worsened and he let us know that it was time to transition. We called Holly Ridge Veterinary Hospital first thing in the morning and they lovingly agreed to squeeze us in. We've received great care from various veterinary hospitals over the years but this was above and beyond. Their care and compassion was extraordinary. We were brought into a soft lit room where we were able to get down on the blanketed floor and caress Tricycle while he was first gently sedated and then, when we were ready, euthanized. Staff even went so far as to give Tricycle some delicious treats beforehand to ease his situation. After his passing, staff put him into a sturdy body bag for dogs and then brought him out and loaded him into our car so we could transport him ourselves to the crematory in Wilmington. I only wish that there were more stars to rate the exception care and service we received. God bless this hospital. read more

I have been using this office for 4 years and I have to say that I shouldn't have given them anymore chances after the first issue but I believe everyone has bad days, so I did. Two years ago I brought my cat here because she was rubbing the hair off the back of her. Tests were ran, nothing was found, so they concluded that my cat needed flea medicine. She had no fleas and there were never any found in my home. Turns out, she must have been allergic to something in her food because I changed it and the rubbing stopped. You would think that this would have been recommended by the vet but it wasn't and I played a guessing game and diagnosed her myself. My dog also was going here for yearly checkups, so I left it alone and continued to use this practice. Shortly after this incident, my dog developed a mass and needed to be seen to find out what it was. They told us it was benign and planned to remove it but the surgery was a couple months out. I chose to travel to his old vet and have it removed because of this. A few months later, my dog developed illness and this practice couldnt get us in. They recommended that I take him to the animal hospital. Turns out the mass was CANCER and he was riddled with it and couldn't be saved. Just recently I got two new puppies and chose to stay local so we returned to this practice. On the day of my appointment, my husband brought our dogs in. One of the workers was having a hard time with another dog so my husband helped out. After helping, he went to check in and was told that he was late! They said he would need to take a later appointment 3 hours from the time he was there for. Considering he was on time and they saw him there, my husband was upset. They gave him a hard time about pet records saying they were not sent, to which my husband showed them that they were sent. At this point my husband told them to lose our records and we would be finding a new vet. He was understandably upset with the rude receptionist. After two misdiagnosis's on two different animals, I should have left already but tried to keep it local. The icing on the cake for me was that I received a letter in the mail dismissing us from the practice AFTER we told them we were taking our business elsewhere. Don't worry Holly Ridge Veterinary Hospital, I had no intentions on returning and I will no longer recommend your services as I did before. Thanks for the rudeness and disrespect. read more

My dogs and I have been here twice and both experiences have been great. Upon entering the building you'll notice a sizable waiting area-this is nice when they are busy or you simply need to keep animals away from one another. On our most recent visit we were squeezed in so my one dog could get boardatella and another vaccine-kind of them! The tech we worked with was informative and really pleasant. I also find their pricing to be reasonable. Many other places charge a fee for having the tech do the boardatella (even though you aren't seeing a vet.) I had 2 dogs that were seen by Holly Ridge over the last 2.5 years that I lived here. Both of my dogs were considered senior when we moved. Sadly my oldest, was misdiagnosed and ultimately succumbed to his illness. Although he was considered senior, they never followed up on testing results and it lead to additional suffering. I can never forgive their neglect . My other Dog has had protein in his urine since moving here, it was brushed off until I finally left the practice in February of this year. Come to find out that my Dog is now in early stages of kidney failure along with BPH. I would not take my dogs to this practice, and I suggest anybody who truly loves their dogs do the same. Coming from a wonderful vet and family background in veterinary practice to this establishment has been eye-opening. In addition, when leaving the practice, the front desk receptionist was beyond rude when I asked for medical records. This practice is overwhelmed and can't handle the volume and provide quality care. Sad. read more

I wanted to leave 5 stars, but unfortunately I had to stop taking my dogs there. They did a wonderful job with my other dog during his end of life and I had really high hopes with my puppies, but they do not answer their phones, nor do they have a voicemail nor do they have any sort of online services. I had to call everyday, 3 times a day for a week just to try to make an appointment and it is just not right to make it so difficult for your customers. I understand we are in a more 'rural' area, but if more time was spent on answering the phones or investing in technology I would have definitely stayed there. 3 other people in my neighborhood had to changes vets due to this lack of communication. read more

Fast forward two weeks and my dog got bit by fire ants and his foot swelled up. Called to get in to see the vet because he is very susceptible to problems. I was told to get an appointment at emergency care in Wilmington. So even though they are your family vet they can't or won't fit you in for major problems. I was absolutely blown away with the friendliness and courtesy of the staff at Holly Ridge Veterinary Hospital. We have an old Border Collie who is most decidedly on the decline. We just wanted to get him some comfort care so that he can make the best out of his remaining days. The techs and Dr. Kezios treated our guy with nothing but compassion, love, and respect and made the visit a breeze. They didn't pressure us into any unwanted (or frankly unnecessary at this stage of his life) tests or treatment like we have experienced at other veterinary offices. They understood our guy's needs and were more than happy to help us make our good boy's life as full and fulfilling as possible with his limited time left. We only wish we had discovered them sooner. First I'd like to say that everyone is so friendly and professional! This is a local veterinary hospital and rest assured you'll get the care that is needed for your pet! After the hurricane Florence most lost power and this in turn caused a lot of hospitals to lose valuable medications for pets. I am not a regular client here but they went above and beyond in helping me with my pet Murphy Raider who is diabetic. Our normal hospital lost everything and didn't have any insulin. Our doctor wrote the prescription and we called around found this awesome hospital and they helped us! I am just so grateful for their help and allowing me to fill my diabetic dog Murphy prescription there. Because I don't live close to them I don't come to this area much, however if I lived in this area I'd bring Murphy here. The facility was very clean and I loved how already they have fall decorations up with a pawattitude to it lol and it smelled like fall in the office just very calming to the animals as well as the owners. If you happen to live in this area or close I do recommend coming here you'll receive top of the line care and not only that it's local. I have been going to Holly Ridge for almost 6 years. All of my 'well' visits, check ups etc. Last week my dog was attacked and had a puncture wound on his side. It was Friday, so not a weekend. I called just after they opened to get a time to bring him in. I was told that several people had called out and that they could not treat him. I was shocked. Sadly, my last visit did not go well. It was a very unprofessional visit - they switched my dogs vet without informing me. - I got a call today asking me to confirm an appointment that I had no idea that had been made. When I told them I had no idea of an appointment there first and only response was they could take the appointment off. When I explained I had an unprofessional visit and wouldn't be bringing him back they didn't even inquire about what had happened. Jack has always done well at the vet, taken his shots perfectly fine, and has never been nervous. When you corral a dog from behind; grabbing him around his neck, when he's already nervous of course he is going to try to escape the situation which he wormed his way out of this vet techs arms. I was never given results to his heart worm testing or fecal testing - thank goodness I asked for a receipt so I could have that information. I was also given medicine that I wasn't told what it was, what it was for, and how I should go about giving it to him. This is very disappointing that I've had nothing but good visits especially with Dr. Maxwell. This vet I seen was very unprofessional and did not show any compassion for working with animals. My dog will not be returning here. read more

I had my first experience with this office under less than ideal circumstances. Our cat was sick and ultimately had to be put to sleep at that visit. Dr Larson was professional but compassionate and I was given as much time as I needed to say good-bye to our beloved Oliver. The staff was beyond kind and when I returned to get his ashes, again, the compassion was heartfelt. My son drew a picture for the staff of our cat and it was so kind to see the appreciation they had upon receiving it. A few months later I took our geriatric dog in and met Dr. Maxwell. She was also professional and great with Charlie. She gave me great info about a fatty lump he has and also a possible abscess on a tooth. I left feeling very satisfied that my dog was well cared for and loved just as my cat had been. For those who are concerned with wait times and/or front office staff, while I had no issues, I would contact Dr. Martin directly. He has offered his personal cell phone number on Facebook specifically for this reason. If that's not a business owner trying to make things right I don't know what is. My measures of service for a business are punctuality and professionalism. Competence is implied in their business title. Dr. Martin has a good thing going out here with this clinic. Today I visited here with family for our dog. The appointment was at 8am. We were checked in and seated by ten of and waited until twenty after before asking for a status. I understand that the business may be busy but, with only one other in the waiting room who was seen promptly, if you cannot honor an 8am appointment, don't make one with me. When we asked about the hold up we were met with disdain by a veterinary assistant. Her condescension was overtly evident. Both of my measures of good service trampled in one morning. The office is put together well, very clean and the lady who took care of us in the examination room was very professional. Dr. Martin, as well, was very professional. My dog has been seeing Dr. Martin since I found him after hurricane Florence in 2018. I have always had an issue with trying to get an appointment in and I have often needed to actually take my dog in with his injury or illness to get any care provided. I continued to go to Dr. Martin and Holly Ridge veterinary hospital with the intent that it was my dogs regular and family vet. It is abundantly clear now that they do not care for your pet. I have had multiple emergencies during working hours and nonworking hours and have only ever been told I must take my dog to the emergency vet in Wilmington because they are unable to make an appointment for him. Today I called because my dog got into a few things he shouldn't have and wasn't acting like himself. I specifically was told that there was a cancellation at 3:10. The vet tech or clerical staff was going to ask the vet if she was available to see my pet during that time. After being left on hold, I was finally told that they could not fit me in because the vet would be leaving early today and she did not want to fill that appointment that was available. Keep in mind they are open until 6 pm... I was then once again instructed to take my dog to the emergency vet. After asking about Dr. Martin (the vet my dog normally would see) I was also told that Dr. Martin normally refers his animals to the emergency vet as well. All in all, they do not care for your pets. If you have any emergencies they will not care for your pet. I was told specifically that this is an appointment only veterinary hospital. We will not be returning. Absolutely ridiculous and lack of compassion for animals. I wish I could give 0 stars. read more

We're so happy that Dr. Martin and his staff chose Holly Ridge! He also chose one of the most loveliest residential homes to renovate as his office. The office is calming and very clean, the staff has always been helpful with getting our young cocker spaniel Tucker in on short notice. You can tell Dr. Martin truly loves animals by the way he handles them so gently. Tucker has to be muzzled due to anxiety but Dr. Martin stays calm while Tucker wiggles and fights. But when you're the only one in the waiting room, and still takes a hour to be finally seen by the doctor. That's just unprofessional. Love the doctors, but the front office is epitome of ineptness. Told in June my little dog needed dental cleaning and to schedule for 3 months out. Was told no appointments available but put on waiting list. After waiting thru September, when I called in October was told there was no list and didn't know why I was told that. Scheduled dental for November. When I arrived, still have to call even though 2 techs and been out front already. Girl that answered has to go over the form I filled out and sent in a month ago! Said she didn't have it because receptionist hadn't printed them out for that day yet. This should be done the day before! Instead, you get to go over the same form again without seeing it and having to try and remember what you put on the form they have in the computer. Asked if I wanted her chipped, which is in her records too, and I told them again she already has chip and they have that info. She informs me they don't have that info yet either. Should have the record updated and pulled BEFORE a person takes their pet for scheduled surgery!!! It is like this every visit. I own a business too. I would have to hire someone else for front office. read more

This place is the king of bait and switch and upcharging. Took my Labradore here and he was diagnosed with an ACL tear. When I asked for an initial quote, I was told $1800. After deliberating the decision and weighing responsible pet ownership against financial stewardship, we requested to schedule the surgery. Three days later, we received a call to notify us that we were booked with a traveling surgeon. When I went to confirm the price, the quote changed to $2200-$2400. I was assured though that it "included everything" (meds, follow-up appts, etc.). When I arrived the day of the surgery, I was given a price sheet to sign that tallied up to $2600-$2800, and the diff wasn't surgery related. Rather, if I wanted more safety for my pet while under anesthesia, then I had to pay more for EKG and blood work. What really grinded my gears though was when I picked up my pet the next day and they charged me for an e-collar!! Did they really expect a Labradore to not lick the wound!?! He obviously was going to need the e-collar. In fact, the surgeon prescribed it in the aftercare notes! What happened to "everything needed is included in price"? At post surgery follow-up, more antibiotics were prescribed at additional expense. Plus, I needed to shell out another $120 for medicine to treat ear infections exacerbated by wearing of the necessary e-collar. All said and done, I'm at nearly DOUBLE the initial quoted price! From what I can tell so far, the traveling surgeon did a great job, and she explained in her consult that her fees haven't changed in a decade. Holly Ridge Vet Hospital also seems to have a knowledgeable and capable staff, but their billing practices are misleading and seemingly greedy. As others have also experienced, I have rarely been seen remotely close to my appointment times. On average, i have not been called into a room until 20-30 minutes after my scheduled time. read more

We, too are new to the area and our terminally cat was ready to be at peace. I called Holly Ridge Vet as they were the closest and after explaining our cat would probably not make it through the night they were able to set me up as a "walk-in". 10 minutes later we were in the waiting room and after only waiting about 10 minutes we met Dr. Martin who was very professional, caring, and sensitive to our situation. None of the staff, including Dr. Martin, tried to push additional services on us like a wellness exam to see if our cat was ready or not or extra fees to have our previous vet fax records. All of the nurses and doctor I interacted with were kind and good to my cats, took care of what I needed and had no interest in charging me unnecessary fees, actually saving me money. Amazing and this not for a 1 time visit either. I have been here multiple times for my pup and my kitten. I honestly can't find a place to start as to why this place deserves five stars. Cost, we all know that when a furbaby needs to be taken to the vet that it isn't cheap. This place $. Not only are they very fairly priced but they do what's best for the animal without breaking your wallet, meaning no unnecessary test or medications. Which leads me to say the reason they are able to do this is because Dr. Martian(the vet) is extremely knowledgable with this field and the animals. I was astounded of his vast knowledge and being able to diagnose problems so efficiently and quickly. He is also very passionate about animals which is a huge plus for me. You wouldn't want someone working on your four legged baby who was to fond of them, would you? He is so good with Dogs as well. My 2 year old German shepherd has a fear of men currently( the dreaded fear stage) and he just does not want to be near them at all. Not only was dr. Martian able to be in the same room without even making my dog feel uncomfortable BUT he was able to pet AND fully examine him including his stomach which is a big deal since its a vulnerable area for most dogs. The staff is terribly sweet and know what they are doing as well. I adore the staff there and their passion for animals. The building is very clean and well kept. read more
