I also sit long hours at the computer for work. This combo was destroying my body and earlier in the week I booked a massage at my usual place but it unfortunately didnt hit the spot. I told my boss my issues and my boss recommended cupping so I started looking for places around me in Santa Clara. I came across Back and Body Wellness and browse their website. They had a bunch of offerings that I've actually been meaning to try. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, so I gave them a call to discuss my issues and my interests and ultimately booked a TMJ 80min session with Jonathan C. which was ~20min TMJ and the rest of the time was for massage in specific problem areas I had (upper back tightness), and right leg / right hip issues. They are in a shared building and their office is closer to the streetside on the second floor. Upon entering, there is a small open lobby with a few seats and there are a few rooms as well as an big open space which looks like people can do PT (physical therapy) type stuff. I ended up not doing the cupping. Jonathan was able to work out a lot of tension in my body with incredible technique. This is probably the best or top 3 massages of my life and I've gotten hundreds of massages (I used to get weekly sports massages when I was more active). The prices matched the website and the appointment was great. After the session, Jonathan gave me a few stretches to work on as well working through the logic of what my body is doing. The office building is multi-level with a stairs that gets you up to the 2nd floor. The break room seems to be communal with other "suites." The massage took place inside a suite. There appears to be two "beds" sectioned off by sheer curtains. After spending time in Thailand, I've been on the lookout for a strong traditional Thai massage therapist. Many of the "Thai massages" in the area mix the traditional Thai massage with the western massage styles by adding oil etc.... Informed the therapist that I was looking for a Thai traditional massage without oil and strong, just like in Thailand. The therapist was strong, did numerous stretches, just like in Thailand. $95/hr + gratuity with $5 off for paying cash. There appears to be a promo program where there is a discounted rate for buying sets of massages. The massage parlor seems to be by appointment only.

I had already planned to leave a tip, but when it wasn't what they considered their "minimum," I was questioned about it and even laughed at. That alone was unprofessional, but it didn't stop there. The front desk staff then pulled out a tip sign that was hidden behind another sign--something that should have been clearly visible from the start if it's truly their policy. On top of that, I was charged more on my card than what I was told. Fifteen percent does not equal twenty percent, and that kind of discrepancy is unacceptable. To make matters worse, the towels used during the service had a noticeable mildew smell, especially the one placed on my face, which completely took away from what should have been a relaxing experience. Overall, between the lack of transparency, pressure around tipping, being overcharged, and poor hygiene standards, this was not a professional or comfortable environment. Unfortunately, the entire session was not what I expected. For most of the 90 minutes, she used her elbow to press very hard on my shoulders. It did not feel like a Swedish massage at all -- it felt overly aggressive and uncomfortable. Today I woke up with severe shoulder pain. My shoulders are extremely sore, and I honestly feel worse than before the massage. I came in to relax and receive a proper Swedish massage, but instead, the session consisted mostly of intense elbow pressure and stretching. It was very disappointing and not what I paid for. I will not be returning.
