After meeting Joe, it's my feeling that anyone that does not give him a five out of five. Is either in a personal delusion or working for a competitive company. With that said let me tell you about my experience. I am in my mid-30s. I have over a decade of experience of hiring different contractors and/ or a handyman depending on the task. I hired Joe earlier this week to remodel my bathroom. Not only was he on time both days he showed up and worked diligently throughout the whole day without taking any breaks. He was hired to fix the floor. He ended up going above and beyond and fixing A leak in our sink and straightening the door in the bathroom. Those might seem like small things but there's very few people you hire to do the one thing correctly let alone take it upon themselves to fix other things - just to be a good person. I'm not going to think twice next time something is broken or I want to upgrade something in my loft. In fact I literally feel better about living here.. I know any time something breaks. I have a dependable, nice & trustable person to call. I grew up in a small town in northern California and hiring Joe feels like hiring a person I would find in my hometown and that's an amazing experience. Can't discuss his actual work as a handyman or contractor. But like Karen H. said in her review, there may be communication problems. I had made an appointment last Sunday for a Wednesday evening fix of a lighting fixture with a broken ceiling push pin recessed bulb. I wasn't called afterwards to confirm the appointment. Then I left a message that Wednesday to cancel as broken bulb already replaced, which wasn't easy. I asked to get a call back just to confirm they got the message to cancel the appointment, as well as texted their cellphone number. I never got any response back. Bottom line is I would hesitate before calling them again for future work. I wouldn't have bothered posting this as pretty trivial in itself. However, after reading Karen H.'s review, it may be an example of a larger problem. read more

Joe did a variety of jobs for me, and I was very pleased with the work and general skill level. He works with a bunch different guys. Most of them seem quite competent. There is one issue which they might do better which is to focus on washing up more. Of course, they get dirty doing the work that they do, but they left a few dirt marks that I haven't been able to get out and need to be painted over. Joe did an excellent job in my apartment installing a ceiling fan in my living room. There was no box in the ceiling, and he did all the necessary work to make it work, adding a box strong enough to take the weight of the fan, and doing a clean installation of the electrical wiring and the switch. It looks like the apartment came with it. He said he would do it in two days, gave me a quote, and that's exactly what he did. After leaving message after message to other handy men, Joe is the only one that actually has an assistant who picked up and arranged for a visit. It's a major plus not to have to play phone tag when you have a flood in your house. Joe showed up right on time and immediately found the source of the problem and provided an accurate estimate. After a nice response that suggested immediate service I was psyched that someone would come out that afternoon and fix my kitchen light fixture's wiring. After an hour went by with no follow up call from anyone, I realized I had no firm commitment and called back. Only then was I forwarded to Alycia who promised Ricky would be out the next morning at 8:00 a.m. Ricky was on there on the dot and worked through the antique wiring issues like a hero. Beware their $75 estimate fee. They wanted a $75 service fee to drive less than 3 miles, in my case Hollywood to Silver Lake, for an estimate. High for an estimate, since they're just a handymen service, and I'd recently gotten 2 other estimates from licensed contractors (one all the way from Sherman Oaks), with no estimate fee whatsoever. I'm doing a $30,000 bathroom renovation and I'd have thought they'd be pleased to have a chance to bid the job. read more

I am opening a new business and he turned a bathroom into a office, bolted some heavy equipment into the floor, cut a window into a existing wall, sealed the floors, put in molding and did quite a few other odds and ends. I went through a really, really bad experience from an Air bnb guest who wrecked my place and as I had to file a claim immediately, Air bnb had a certain amount of hours within which I had to provide an estimate of all the damages and see if I qualify for compensation. I used Joe again to fix the cracked grout in my shower floor as well as repair the drywall in the dining room ceiling and closet which was damaged from the leaky shower. Joe's work has always been good in the past but this time I was really really disappointed. Since I asked my tenant to call Joe directly, I wasn't aware of his new price structure and the $75 estimate fee until after he had come out to bid the job and I received the estimate. He gave me an estimate for the job which I thought was high but since his work had been good in the past and he is a nice guy, I decided to go with him anyway. Also that's the only way the $75 fee would go towards something.....by applying it to the cost of the job. Well............after it became clear that the shower grout was the cause of the leak and the scope of the work was much less than was put on the estimate, I asked Joe to reconsider his price and only charge what is reasonable for replacing two small patches of drywall. I had gone to the job site everyday wanting to talk to Joe but he was never there. His helper was. When I realized I wouldn't be talking to Joe in person and after trying to call a couple of times with no answer, I sent an email and was basically told I was out of line for asking this and should have voiced my concerns before the job started. On the last day of the job when I was thinking that I would meet Joe at the job site to discuss everything and make the final payment, his wife arrived. She was extremely difficult to deal with and refused to make any sort of concessions. I'm sorry but fixing a 3x3 section of ceiling drywall does not warrant a charge of $600. Also when the helper dremelled out the grout in the shower, he chipped a tile. The only reason Joe agreed to fix this was because I happened to take pictures of the "before" condition of the shower to document it for my own purposes. When Joe agreed to fix the tile, I was told it was a "courtesy"........I think not. It was necessary since their helper chipped the tile in the first place and then lied about it to them. Fast forward a month later and I get a call from my tenants saying the shower drain is backing up. I told them to call a plumber and have it snaked. Long story short, 3 plumbers and 3 snake attempts later, camera scoping equipment found a blockage that it couldn't get through and couldn't identify. The only solution was to cut holes in the drywall to try to access the section of pipe where the blockage was. 9 holes in my drywall and 1 in my neighbors garage ceiling and we FINALLY found the blockage.............grout! Although Joe disagrees with me, his helper did NOT adequately protect the drain and all of the grout either from when it was dremmeled out or when the shower was regrouted was washed down the drain. It cost me $2500 to find the blockage and repair the drywall. I told Joe I was going to take him to small claims court but in the end in order to save myself some stress (I was pregnant), I did not take him to court. Instead I am writing this review. Oh and the work that he did do this time was mediocre at best. read more

I had used Joe in the past and had good experiences, but the last time I called him I had to call him back twice to get him to respond. I should have contacted someone else at that point, but I was on maternity leave and dealing with a newborn. Then, we made an appointment and my tenants made a point to be home and he never showed and didn't call to say why. I texted him and asked him what had happened and never heard back. I suppose there might have been an emergency or something going on, but I would have thought that he would have contacted me with an explanation at a later date. great job! i had an ikea loft bed that i no longer wanted as a loft so i hired hollywood handy to come out and take the bed apart, cut down the legs and put it back together again saving me the hassle and money of buying a new standard bed. We had a number of items that needed fixing/doing: a broken sprinkler head, a door that wouldn't shut, a door that wouldn't open, a roof that sometimes leaked when it rained, water-damaged window trim, a floodlight that had broken in the socket, and a flat-panel television that we wanted mounted on the wall. Joe and Chris, a friend he's known since the fifth grade who now works with him, came and crossed all those items off the to-do list in 7 hours. He did an absolutely wonderful job doing all the work to get my laundry room washer-dryer ready -- and at a great price! Not only was he super friendly and professional, but also so creative and thoughtful in how he went about everything, finding ways to maximize the space in a tiny room, and even added in picking up the washer & dryer and installing it in the deal! Not to mention all the little helpful fix-it things he did during the day, without being asked: he adjusted the gate to the building property so it would lock properly, fixed my screen door, set up a light, etc. He came back promptly the following week for a follow-up visit when I called him with a concern. He and his assistant Omar were timely, professional, courteous and trustworthy. I definitely got my money's worth, and will certainly call Joe again when I have another job to be done. I called a bunch of people on yelp for help with a leak and fixing my bathroom floor. Joe was available that week to help which was great luck. My husband and i loved that he was on time, competent, worked really clean, and dedicated to getting the job done well. He is a great problem solver, and sounds like second or 3rd generation builder and handy man! He had to come back a second day to finish the job and was able to squeeze us in the same week. Best if all he used non toxic products to remove all the glue on our concrete floor. Would definitely recommend him for a job and plan on hiring him again in the future. Maybe the rest of you liked this company but here is my experience. While Joe was nice enough the work he did was terrible. First he replaced a torn screen on a door. He split the wood frame around the screen but said it would hold. At the same time we had him put a metal screen door at another door. That door screen is 5-6 inches shorter than the door opening & it doesn't lock. Seriously, who wants 5-6 inch opening at the bottom of their back door? We called to have him fix it. We had an appointment for 4:00 in the afternoon. After waiting for several hours, & calling the company to find out what the delay was. we got no answer & we gave up. After 7:30 that evening he called to say he was just around the corner. We had already given up and started dinner. And told him so. No apologies, no callback later. Nothing. Two weeks later, since the split wood wasn't holding the frame in place the screen he replaced fell off. The metal screen door doesn't line up & doesn't lock. We wasted about $300. I wouldn't use Joe or this company again. read more

After visiting their website which specifically states "We can build custom closets according to your organizational needs" and "If you can think of something, Joe and his team can probably pull it off," I called to get an estimate about some simple closet remodeling. I already had two different closet specialists come in, both of whom told me that the job was something a handyman could do; contractors would charge too much for such an easy job. I left a message for Joe on Wednesday and when I didn't hear back by end of Friday, I emailed figuring it might be an easier way to reach him. I didn't go into great detail in my email since it's definitely something that's easier to explain in person (which I stated) and asked if it was possible for someone to come to my house and give me an estimate. I didn't hear back from Joe until late Saturday night and his reply was "You need a contractor not a handyman." That's it. I found it to be extremely rude and very, very poor customer service, especially considering the fact that he hadn't seen what the job entailed, nor offered to even speak to me to find out if it was something he couldn't do. It's fine; I'd rather pay someone who is competent and confident in their abilities, but I'd suggest Joe revises the misleading statements on his website. Clearly they aren't true. read more
