I am definitely disappointed in the experience I had with this company. Let me start with the positive. The gentleman who runs this company is very nice and is very pleasant. He is a kind person, and based on the other reviews -- likely does really good work. Now, I live in a small 9 unit condo building. I had requested a few items to be completed. This included the changing of a few light bulbs, cleaning out of dryer vents (exterior), the installation of a broken dryer vent flap (exterior) and to clear the roof and spouting on the roof of debris (branches and leaves). I requested this in Mid-January. He got back to me promptly and came to the property at an agreed upon time on 01/20/2018. I was on the property that day, we walked the property and went over everything and I left. When I came back later, I noticed that he completed most of the things; however, there was still a light bulb out and I could still see debris on the roof. I texted him a couple of days later, and he said "I got tired". It would have been nice if he would have called or sent me a message communicating that with me. Since January 20th, I have been in constant contact with him about coming back to the property. He has rescheduled several times and failed to show each and every time. I even gave him the option of coming "ANYTIME" and he still has not made it back. It has been almost 3 months and we haven't had any action. It is quite ashame. $70/hr was pretty high but I was in a jam and needed someone to regrout my tub before I listed my house. He regrouted my tub and one section of my kitchen. It took him 2.5 hrs. I asked if he charges for fractional hours. He said no. So I paid him for 30 min for work he didnt do. He is friendly but I'm not looking for someone to chat too especially when you're charging me by the hour. For the amount he charges, you expect someone to be quick and efficient with attention to detail. He is none of those. I felt that he dragged on the process more than necessary. He kept talking to me and my children and I heard him on the phone. I felt he probably dragged it on so that he could charge me for 3 hours. The quality was meh. He removed grout from areas and didnt put grout in that area. When he was caulking/sealing the kitchen, he used sand colored sealant that I bought. When I walked in to check it looked horrible. I have no idea why he didnt think to stop and ask that the color is way too light and ask me if it was okay. He had to take it off and go with clear sealant. It took another handy man about 2 hours to regrout/caulk my other 2 tubs and it looks a lot better than his job. He also asked me for a Yelp review. Being a refutable hardware store, I contacted Stephen by phone on a Saturday to help me determine exactly the measurements of my sliding closet mirrored door that I needed replaced, asked him his inspection fee, he quoted $35. which will be credited from the $100. labor charge if he install. I expected that I would have some kind of hard copy , as I later learned that he is licensed contractor and as an inexperienced homeowner with a newly diagnosed CA, and caring for a sick husband at the same time, I had high hope that he wont just be a chatterbox. I expect some kind of expertise advise. He came, took the openings measurement, and said its 96"x 80" , he looked at Home Depots App, scrolled and scrolled, ( cont talking) but ended up nothing, then told me to go to Home Depot myself in Burbank to check. I did not have any receipt or hard copy of anything, I noticed he does not even have anything to write the numbers down of the measuremnets. I was the one writing myself the notes. Then I asked ( having no experience, if the sliding doors size I shld get is 48" wide ( to become a set), he said yes, not to exceed 52". I then paid him by Zelle on that spot. but asked if he can email me a receipt for this 2 minute measurement as his "inspection fee". He left afterwards. Because I was under time pressure to get the material asap, I surfed the internet asap, but took me 3 hrs to find 48"x 80" set ( meaning 48" door size x2 to become a set). Remember, I did not get any feedback from Stephen as what to get, and he basically was in agreement with me when I asked if I need 48". So the ffg day ( which was a Sunday-( his hrs include Sunday till 4pm), I texted him to confirm if I can place my order of a 48"x80", he responded, he did not think so. I was baffled, So I tried to probed further. He got annoyed and texted back " am having breakfast, this is my day off", so I apologized . He sent me a link for measurement of 96"x80". This started my more questioning cause on the detail description , it says door measurement is 96", not the opening size for the width. I got confused with the word "door" and I assumed I needed 2 doors to order of the 96'x80". Then on the specification it says 2 panel ( not panels). Stephen again texted" I told you to go there ( to Home Depot), which I responded the order is doable on line, why should I go when I myself is sick with a sick husband too. Stephen then called, upset, with temper, it was back and forth reasoning, his temper flared up, the he hanged up on me. Before that he said to me " You re not paying me for talking to you" . SLOPPY, UNPROFESSIONAL, UNACCOUNTABLE BEWARE!!! Trip #1 1) First conversation Steve mentioned bringing a worker. I told him I was sensitive to having strangers in my home. If he brings anyone, it ,should be someone he vouches for. Imagine my stupification when he brought a random buy from the HD parking lot. OK I lived to tell the tale, but I didn't appreciate that. 2) The HD worker accidentally cracked the $50 piece of plexiglass we were using in the window. It was an oops moment, but Steve made no attempt to remedy; no little discount - nothing. Like, I should just accept that as routine. Since it was not super noticeable, I just shut up. 3) A 2 x 3 he used to hold the a/c in place running the width of the window was 'glued' to the plexiglass outside; meaning that when the window is open you see an a/c and a tacky piece of wood running the length of the window that can't be covered or painted. 4) There are open gaps (sunlight streaming through) on both sides of the unit. Heat and misquitos can easily get in. 5) There was an awkward extended personal conversation he had with his girlfriend while the worker and I just stood there (my place is very small). That was random. 6) He took a pic of himself at my window without the courtesy of asking if that was ok. Trip 2 I have 4 pieces of IKEA-Target type furniture to put together. Mounting two heavy items, pick up a futon a few blocks away-haul bed to the GWill a few blocks away. Had sent a detailed list of furniture; over the toilet shelf, wall mounted shelf unit, futon, sm pub table and little benches, also asking to re-secure the mirror Steve hung previously. (I have been a Purchasing Manager for several health centers and support offices many years so have hired people for these tasks more than the average person probably. I believe my expectations are reasonable.) I requested two guys, 4 hrs. I was going to be out of town, but wanted to get on the books. I figured since I had no structural jobs, they could handle IKEA furniture. WRONG! Steve sends my info on to a second person with no hand off. Guy is Gil. He contacts me. Blowing up my phone for several days while I am out of town (which I explained). He is re-sent the list I sent to Steve. He shows up, nice guy. Says Steve will be there later. He struggled with EVERYTHING, constantly blaming 'the directions". We all know these kind of directions can be challenging - but he's the professional, right? The quality of workmanship is so bad I want to cry at how bad of a job he did with my new pieces of furniture - now expensive trash. I paid this ... worker $50/hr! He was worth no one than $15 - as a helper. He also gave me a personal business card that did not reference Honey Do - to whom I employed. 1) It took him ONE AND ONE HALF HOURS to put together a basic over the toilet shelf. 2) A mounted a shelf unit was installed upside down by he and Steve (who showed up for this one thing). When I noticed it, he re-installed, but on the clock. 3) The top on my new little pub table was not attached securely to the frame. There are bumps where the screws were over-installed across the top. 4) my $500 futon was ruined; 'nailed' together. He left 5 huge screws from the packaging that did not get used. I can't use it as a futon (why else would one buy a futon if not to use it as an occasional bed) and am afraid if it gets moved around too much the frame will split. I was about to book another handyman that day but Stephen's rates were notably cheaper and he was available immediately. He was extremely polite throughout the entire process. We ran into some issues because my sink needed an adapter that I did not provide initially. He figured out what he needed and went out to Home Depot and another hardware store to get the appropriate adapter. Because of this issue, he had to return the next morning to finish the job, which he did. This was fine, because we agreed that he would come the day of to initially work on it for a few hours, but that he had to be somewhere around dinner time. He was prompt and reliable, and extra charges for the additional labor of going out of his way to get the extra parts and all the time required was minimal. We needed two new front door handle sets and deadbolt installed. We got a pair at Home Depot. I got a quote from a locksmith for $350. This locksmith told us the door handle sets would not work on our door and we had to buy some other special handle sets which would cost much more than what we got at Home Depot. I had him install an overhead microwave, easy peasy. Then I needed to replace a smoke alarm high up on an A-frame ceiling. He hoisted a ten foot ladder over my balcony, climbed nimbly up the ladder and got it done. I wasn't nervous about him being on the ladder and I'm normally a basket case about that. I had a refrigerator door that was sticking. He figured out a quick solution, saved me about a hundred bucks for what it would've cost to replace it. He's GOOD. I called Steve for a tiling job for my kitchen and 2 bathrooms. He came over, took measurements, and gave me a very competitive quote. Having read all of his rave reviews on yelp, I decided to give him the job. As much as I liked Steve as a person, there were a few 'misunderstandings' that led me to be a rather unhappy customer. Let me explain. 1. After taking our measurements, I went to purchase the tile accordingly. As it turns out, his measurements were off by over 30 sq. ft. in the bathrooms, and 20 sq ft. in the kitchen. I now have $$$ worth of extra tile sitting in my garage that I will likely never use. While it's always good to have a little extra tile on hand in case of mishaps, this is way too much of a calculation error. 2. He sent his partner to do most of the job, and while also friendly, his partner was a no-show on 2 of the days he was supposed to come, causing me some really annoying scheduling difficulties. 3. After I made my final payment of the balance (even though the job had not been complete), they gave me pretty bad attitude when they had to return to finish the job. Keep in mind, I wasn't asking them to go beyond the scope of our agreed work... I just wanted them to finish the job. He said twice to me, "Every time I have to come back to your house now I am losing money." I REALLY had to bite my tongue because I wanted them to finish the job but was furious that he was characterizing it this way. Lesson learned: don't pay off the balance before the work is finished (I did it this way because we were going out of town & let them in to finish on the day we had to leave, but they did not finish that day). 4. One of the new transition strips that we bought was ruined when he was returning my refrigerator to its position (it's a 2-person job, not a 1-person job), so it had to be replaced. Personally, I don't think we should have had to pay for this error as well, but I wanted to pick my battles and focus on having them finish the job, so I paid for the ruined strip and the replacement strip. However, the fact that I was expected to pay for it left a bad taste in my mouth. All in all, I would recommend Steve for small around-the-house jobs, but not a job that will take any extended period of time (e.g. more than a day or two). I think the job was too much for him, especially with how busy he is. **Edit** To clarify, I should point out despite the aforementioned points, that the end result tile job itself was satisfactory. read more

We found this service on living social - and was extremely disappointed in it. We made our appointment, and he didn't show up, didn't call, didn't answer the phone. He did eventually, and said he forgot about us. That should have been our first clue. When he did show up - he didn't want to do the painting we originally planned the service for. He did fix a light fixture that the bulb had broken off in, reset our pocket door, and fixed the rain gutter just fine. However, the grout in our tub he did a very lousy job - not to mention, he left a mess in the tub for me to clean up! He spent more time on his phone, or just b-s'ing than working! Wanted to have awnings painted...the guy that came over totally ripped me off! The work he did was terrible!! I had to repaint everything he did!!! If you're a DIY kind of guy like me, inevitably you find yourself hitting a wall... and when you do, you gotta be thankful that guys like Steve Boykin are around to save the day. My "wall" in this scenario was literally... a wall. Specifically the shower pipes that were less than straight in the wall, making replacing shower cores and handles more than a challenge to me; something I was coming to terms with on about my 5th try to get these on right. So I emailed Steve who texted me back and soon enough, Steve was at my building rocking an LA Dodgers hat (plus there for a local like me) with a smile. As I mentioned, I'm a DIY guy so when I asked Steve if I could give a helping hand so that I can learn in the process, he was cool with it and before I knew it, something that was killing my ego for a day was resolved while telling some fun stories back and forth as a "team". Before taking off, Steve was kind enough to look at two other "next projects" i was about to tackle including my leaking hot / cold fountain in the kitchen and my leaking A/C. His advice on the kitchen fountain was the dead on and I was able to fix it myself two days later after receiving a part from the manufacturer who was based in LA. He also pointed out some issues in the A/C unit in the ceiling that I couldn't see before and helped me so that I could take some vital photos of the issues for handing off to an A/C pro to fix it.
