Entering Holt is like heaven for me. More specifically the purses section, I don't want to get into my obsession with that. I usually find the service kind of suck up. If you don't look like an old business woman/man, you seem to get treated different. I used to shop here all the time with a friend of mine, always got served by the same person and one day that person was not there. There was no one that we recognized and no one that seemed to want to help us? My friend is probably one of the most successful people I know but looks like he's a 25 year old little thug, which is why no one really wanted to help us? But then when he wanted to buy over $5000 worth of items, sales people were just jumping at us, funny. (And this is in reference to the clothing section, the make up section is quite different) But I still love love love this place, it's the only place to find the biggest variety of great designers in Vancouver. If you love buying or just looking at beautiful designer pieces, definitely go to Holt Renfrew, but you will get your fair share of snob by shoppers. even if you can't afford it, go visit. the day you go is the day you will sell your 90's box-on-wheels for a fabulous pair of manolo's that are calling your name. Only issue I have is that they catered one day a special event but the food was terrible and the coconut water they handed out was just awful *YUCK :-P* for such an upscale store you figured that would have something more appealing for your taste buds instead of those cardboard cookies. Just the best place. Of course, there is the super high-end retail which is going to break the bank, but there are more wallet friendly alternatives here like Michael Kors, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Rebecca Minkoff, etc.... They have everything from Chanel to Givenchy to Celine to even Ray Bans and Carrerras. Their make up department is great too and has all the notable make up brands. However, I know that some of the brands, such as Clinique, do not have their entire collection here at Holts. So, if you want a larger variety you should check out The Bay. Holt Renfrew used to be the only source for many lines, including Erno Laszlo skin care, so for years I shopped here and the HR in Montreal. I still have some gorgeous sweaters bought years ago at the annual sale. Currently, the freedom of knowing that Laszlo is carried elsewhere in Vancouver, means that if an associate seems to be ignoring me, it's just not a big deal. The super positive note is that the perfume counter has really knowledgeable staff, and the lines usually supply generous samples. The Chanel perfume bar carries No 18. We scored a fabulous Jil Sander shirt in men's wear, I love the Byredo perfume I treated myself to, and truly enjoy mentally adding up the cost of the ensembles of some of my fellow shoppers, knowing they are doing the same with me. To confound the total, I sometimes wear the priceless Cowichan sweater I inherited from my mother - secure in the knowledge that any designer represented at HR would salivate over the design. Don't even bother if you're not Asian, you won't be helped and you won't receive any kind of service deserving of the luxury. This location knows that they make their money off of a specific demographic and they lean back on this. The staff and even the manager of sales is checked out in this regard, they are definitely not very kind. Go to Nordstrom instead, at least then you won't be made to feel as though you don't deserve to be in the store at all. Holt Renfrew gets me excited about fashion, which is rare because I work in/live for fashion and therefore I'm easily jaded. All of the beautiful colors and well laid-out floor planning gives me inspiration about what's new and fresh. They carry quite a few LA contemporary labels. I give Holt only 4 stars because 1) the sales could be better, and I love sales, and 2) there could be more. More inventory, more space, more to love. Maybe I'm just greedy. read more

I love visiting Holt Renfrew when there is an end of season sale for their shoe sale! Shoes during the end of season sale are around 50% off their retail prices. When there's a shoe sale there are new shoes that pop out each day that make me come back throughout the week just to see what's new on sale. The sales people in the shoe dept aren't very helpful though, they don't come up and ask if you're doing okay, if you need any help, etc. they just stand around and gossip with each other so don't expect any help from them! Handbag sales are more of a hit or a miss. Sometimes there are amazing deals in the sale bin, but usually I find only one decent deal in the week and still I'm not convinced to buy it. On the other hand, the Chanel boutique is amazing! The staff there are so sweet and helpful in comparison to the shoe dept. Unfortunately for shoes, Chanel only gets one size for each style in stock vs the shoe dept may get a few so popular shoe sizes go quick here! If you're going to pay retail prices, you might want to consider purchasing them from the US if you can. The prices at Holt Renfrew are more than the prices I see in t he US and you have to consider the 12% HST. read more

Okay so I know I swore off Holt Renfrew and really didn't walk in their doors for a whole year but their Black Friday special was so tempting and I caved... Bought hubby a Burberry suit for $900 and my sales person Virinly was great! He gave me his number and when I called him to arrange for alterations he told me he was off that day but would come in to meet us if we'd like. There was no way I was going to ask him to come in on a day off so we arranged for my husband to come in when he was back at work. They have in house tailoring and my husband was able to get his pants hemmed within the hour. Really impressed and will consider shopping here again as long as Virinly is there. read more

This place is what I imagine heaven to be like, with all the different designers and brands I just about die. They have every possible high end brand you can think of, and most of these brands even have their own boutique within the store. Holt Renfrew really is 3 floors of bliss - from Gucci to Chanel to Prada to Armani; you name it, you'll find it. Normally I don't give a 4-star to a skincare firm that I haven't committed to yet full time, as trying out the samples, have to say it does feel good but the reason for the 4th star, this is only line created by a plastic surgeon. Vera, with her Lady Ga Ga-like makeup, sure knows her stuff, very professional, as well as speaking Cantonese and Mandarin fluently. I went to Holt Renfrew on a Saturday to shop around for something I could exchange a not so good birthday present I received...I left my birthday present at home unfortunately, but might as well shop as I was downtown already....I was dressed pretty nicely, had an older LV crossbody bag but no shopping bags in my hand that day....no one bothered to say hello or offer any assistance.....I was in that store for literally an hour. Next day, Sunday, bought my not so good birthday present and put it in a Louis Vuitton shopping bag instead of the pink Holt Refrew bag....guess what?! I had like 3 sales people on the floor who actually said HELLO to me!! Omgosh, wow! I actually felt swamped! I was getting service?! Huh?! One sales lady even offered to tell me the sale that they had going on...spend $500, and get $50 off! Anyways, I found something I wanted to exchange my gift for....the cashier was so fake nice I wanted to get the transaction done with ASAP...you know when you just get the feeling that someone is cold, no good vibes? The whole place felt exactly like that! Holt Renfrew, please teach your staff to smile or at least be down to earth!! I started shopping with Holt Renfrew in the fall of 2005, I stopped around 2009 due to customer service reasons. I still browse, but always take my purchases elsewhere. I will never forget the day I asked if they carried Balmain or Berluti shoes. After the 3 sales associates I spoke to stopped giggling they suggested I go check Sears. For reference, they now carry Berluti shoes, the average price is $3,000 as of May 2017. This interaction proved to me they don't know their products and more importantly how to respect their customers. The nasty, viscous and rude attitude unleashed on me I still remember all this time later You know why Nordstrom is better? They care. If you look at Nordstom Vancouver reviews on yelp every comment is responded to (for better or worse) by a Nordstrom representative (as of time if writing). What does Holt Renfrew do when customers repeatedly describe their service as awful, neglectful, rude, incompetent and racist? Nothing. I don't know about you but if different people were calling me rude, incompetent and racist I would apologize, take a good look in the mirror and make some changes. Patterns require reflection. Why don't they care? Because lack of competition breeds a dangerous sense of entitlement. Look no further than customer service reviews of Air Canada, or any Canadian wireless provider as proof of this. Holt Refrew's current modus operandi is obvious: extract as much wealth from the mainland Chinese customers as humanly possible. In dealing w a return I felt like knocking the sales clerk on the head to see if she actually is as hollow as she sounded. This is only concerning the makeup section. Ok, so I have not cared much for makeup until Sephora came along, but heaven as people sometimes say can get predictable. I mean it is perfect - things there are priced on all ranges, even super cheap, so you get the same wider and oft better range of choices than drug stores, and come on, service there is unexplicably perfect. How??? Every time??? So I decided that since I was better versed in makeup, I would check out where people went before the oasis... so I came to Holt's. First off, it is much harder to try on products here - there are way fewer brushes around and cleaning wipes or makeup remover. And the products just seem more expensive... is it an illusion? I can't remember exactly..Although there were some reps to help you out, there weren't that many at all. And they mostly were just interested in chatting with their friends and fellow associates (it was Friday night and everyone was getting ready to go out). The most hilarious part of the experience? Ok, so I asked a male associate to help me with the Armani line, and he helped me with a lot of disinterest and carelessness. And the whole time before and after this, he was walking around singing at the top of his lungs, We are not who you think we are, we are GOLDEN. We are GOLDEN. I just died. I mean, what would the people of Dior and Guerlain and L'ancome say if they knew how much cheaper their products were being made to look? Way to kill the fantasy of luxury... And another few female associates were talking really loudly about going out and the perfumes they were going to sample... Ah, it just made me kind of uncomfortable. Is there any reason for this? Do these people think they have absolutely no accountability for how they behave? I have had more considerate associates at the most simple stores... I would also give them zero stars if I could. I went in on Remembrance Day, I didn't know it was almost closing time when I walked in since the website said they would be open till 9pm that day. I went in to buy some jeans, I knew the brand and style I wanted but needed to try them on before I bought them, all was fine until I get to the denim counter to pay for my jeans this is when I was told it was 5 minutes past closing, I said oh I am sorry the website said it was open late tonight she then says to me well OUR customers know our hours (WOW I cannot believe the gull for her to say that I am not a customer? I shopped here 3 times a month minimum) It gets worse..... an Asian male employee that was dealing with another customer at an opposite till hears me apologizing to the young girl and that I again got the times from the website and if I knew it was closing time I would never of drove Downtown to come at closing. Well the Asian male employee turns to look at me and makes a sound like he huffed, takes the other customers items from the till he was already using comes over raises the other customers items about 2 feet above my jeans opens his hands and lets the items fall/drop onto my item. I looked at him confused and he had a look of insanity on his face I couldn't even look at him. He waited for me to say something or give a reaction, I could see it all over his face he was looking to fight so I turned away and waited for the female employee to deal with that. She looked confused moved the items off of my jeans and started to wrap and bag my jeans. The other customer had her mouth open and I am sure left just as confused as me. I have had bad customer service here almost every time such as employees not speaking english, having an attitude if I don't like something after trying it on, passing me up for Asian shoppers has happened almost every time, scowling at me like I am a scrub even though the clothing I am wearing was purchase from Holt, etc. But this has done it for me I will no longer be shopping at Holt, I do not need the abuse. If I need something I will just order it online or shop at Nordstrom, I have had nothing but smiles from the employees there and one time I was offered a drink while I shopped! For being Canada's premier luxury shopping destination it's pretty sad. If you find something in a magazine you want to buy chances are Holt's won't have it. Multiple times I've been embarrassingly told by staff that their buyers didn't order the item (which was featured in brand's worldwide campaigns or most blogged about items). I went in to purchase a coat before Christmas and couldn't believe the lack of inclusive sales associates. 99% were asian. I understand that most of their customers are asian, however, this is Canada, and I think you should change some of your hiring practices to include caucasians as well as other nationalities. I was in HR last week and saw a purse I could not find in Nordstrom's. I called the handbag department to see I it was still there. The associate who I reached on the phone had no interest really in tracking it down as she said (I gave an approximate location) that the displays are moved every two days...She took a quick look and said she did not see it and that was that, no offer of ordering it or seeing if another store had it. Since the 90's, I've purchased my share of clothes at Holt Renfrew only because there weren't a lot of stores that sold exclusive labels not found anywhere else. However, if you shop at Oakridge, Metrotown, or just plain old Downtown, you'll find the same labels that are sold at Holt Renfrew at a similar or lower price. I used to shop at Holt until last Monday, Feb 22nd, 11 am, found a retail service person, men area, asked for his attention and he send me to another attendant behind the counter and was on his laptop, I said hello 3 times, at third time he came around and when asked for his help, he sent me to another attendant, then I got upset and asked for manager to complain, manager ended up coming and told him what a horrible service, he said sorry, that i was right but that was all, not offered me what can he do to get my business, was not looking for a freebie or anything like that but I think he should have done more. It offers a good selection and as many have mentioned, has one of the best selection for designer goods in town. This is one of the few stores where they sell Prada, Marni, and De La Renta. The store itself has a good layout and fairly spacious. Which should easily make it a candy store for people like me. But, from the recent experiences, it is anything but. The customer service is abysmal and ridiculous. Just went there on a slowwwwww weekday afternoon and had to wait 10 minutes to wait for some sort of service. First I went to Dior ( to look for foundation) and they had a customer. So I decided to try Lancome where there was no one who can help me. I was told to wait as they would look for the associates. 10 minutes later I was just left deserted. So true what Katie said, they have so much to learn from Saks and Barneys. I get a comparatively better service there, which makes me much more willing to open my wallet. I'm just perplexed by their snootiness especially after returning from New York. I went with my boyfriend to look for a wallet for his birthday. We went into Gucci and this young girl seem like she didn't want to help or even be there. Another young girl came and help and we wanted to see their selection and after seeing the selection, my boyfriend decided to buy a wallet. Within a year, the stitching broke and we went back to get it repaired under warranty. The same young girl was there and she did not seem like she wanted to help or either she did not really understand English..so another girl comes and help us do the paper work to get the wallet sent back to get repaired. One time, my mom and I went in to look at Gucci bags and the SAME girl was just standing there while these customers were looking at the bag. No greeting at all . Just stood there staring at the customer trying get the bag off the top shelf to take a look. All she did is stood there most of the time without a smile and looking like she was mad or didn't want to be working there. EVERY TIME, she has that same look on her face like she hates working there and doesn't want to help. I am not sure what is wrong with her but if she's going to be in sales, she should at least show she wants to be working there and actually help customer. I find most of the Holt Renfrew staff are really snobby and think people can't afford to purchase something. I'm glad Nordstorm has finally open and now people have an option of going there instead of Holt Renfrew. I do not understand where all the negative comments are coming from. I've always been treated with respect and the utmost courtesy at Holts. You may receive more or less attention depending on which department you're browsing. For example I studied men's sunglasses for ten minutes recently trying to find the right shape and shade and was left completely alone. I would have welcomed a little assistance but on the other hand I pretty much knew what I wanted and it simply wasn't on display that day. In men's apparel I find the staff to be very courteous and eager to help. I explain what I like and don't like, right down to how sheer a fabric I can tolerate and they always find something I like. I cannot speak for women's apparel and such but as a man I have no complaints about any department. And as for staff at Holt Renfrew sizing you up when you enter the store I think that's a load of hooey and more a symptom of insecurity on the part of the posters who feel they've been passed over because they didn't appear "trendy" enough. I wear jeans, a T shirt, sneakers and a windbreaker most of the time and have always experienced very solicitous and courteous service. Granted I'm nicely put together despite the casual dress. I don't look tatty and yes I often wear so-called designer brands, but then again I don't look like a rock star either. They're just a department store people! They're not judging you, they want to sell you something! 4 stars from me. They'd get 5 if they had just a few more people around to help.
