My family and I stopped in this morning and I had to contribute to the 5-star reviews because I can see it's been a few months . We stopped at Holt's Donuts just because it was the closest shop. We're visiting from out of town and needed a quick and crowd pleasing breakfast for our two kiddos. There was no line but we were there around 9:30 am. The front case looked like it had been depleted by the morning rush. It wasn't a problem because we were offered every donut available. She was just still making them and prepping them for the case. My kids were able to order exactly what they wanted and it was dressed up with the frosting and sprinkles of their choice. We were treated like royalty. We brought the donuts back to our temporary place like we intended but in case you're reading this for information: the shop only has one table and a few chairs. Plan ahead. The donuts were incredible. My glazed donuts were wonderfully sweet. They weren't overly glazed nor were they uncovered. The dough was airy and flavorful. My wife and son experienced the same with their white cream filled long John's. There was less airy dough but that was to make room for the filling. My wife mentioned her donut was very sweet but she had no regrets. My son LOVED his probably for the same reason. my daughter had a white cake donut with rainbow sprinkles. I can't tell you how it tasted because she finished it before I had a chance to ask. She's a very picky eater so I'm not upset. Next time I'm in the area I'll be back. I've told some friends that are more local that they need to visit and support this place. I wish I had taken pictures before we devoured our meal but hopefully this inspires someone else to leave a review with a picture. read more

How has it taken me five years to write the highest praise of any donut shop I've ever haunted? Do NOT sleep on Holt's! I've been everywhere there is a good donut in a reasonable (like an hour away... have donut, will travel) distance. I've lived in 5 states and have traveled a lot as well and this is seriously the best donut I've ever had. These donuts are ridiculous! Holt's has been offering deep fried donut goodness for at least 40 years. I remember eating their donuts as a kid. They are arguably the best in all of KC - and maybe even the nation. That's a big statement, I know, but after one bite of their cream filled, chocolate iced covered long john, and you'll be singing their praises too. My only complaint about Holt's is you have to get there early, and I mean early, if you want to get a long john (always the first to sell out). Today, I arrived at 8:30am thinking that would be early enough, but the sweet elderly woman in front of me bought the last two long johns. She's dead to me now! I had to settle for the cream filled rounds. Still delicious, but 2nd place just isn't the same thing as winning. However, there really aren't any bad donuts at Holt's. They do offer call ahead ordering, but that requires some proactive planning, which isn't always easy to coordinate with your morning "I feel like a donut" moment. Their posted hours are 5:30am - 10am, Tuesday - Sunday (closed Monday), but truth be told, they really close when they sell out, which is usually before 10am. I miss the days of working as a kid at the old Cy Young Hardware next door and being the first in line to get a morning treat before starting my shift. Back then we had our pick of the case. Today, the lines have become longer and the donuts may not be as plentiful, but as long as Holt's is still in business, we all continue to win! read more

I first heard of this place two years ago and finally got around to trying it today. ATMOSPHERE: Holt's is a hole-in-the-wall place located off Main St in Grandview. They have a couple chairs, but otherwise it's standing room only. SERVICE: The people who work here are nice, and you can get in and out quickly. FOOD: Obviously, this aspect is the most important part. The doughnuts are are warm, fresh, and delicious. I tried a glazed and a maple frosted. In my opinion the glazed ones here surpass Lamar's. The maple frosting was good, albeit not as strong of a maple flavor as I'd prefer. Another odd thing about this one was it was a solid doughnut yet lacked a cream filling. It was just unusual to see a doughnut like that and not have any filling of some sort. VALUE: This part is very good. I finally found a donut shop in Kansas City that delivers the perfect donut. Unlike most of the offerings in KC that are either so bland as to have no taste or so greasy they appear to have been fried in 40 weight oil, Holt's DO-Nuts are light and tasty! No greasy or artificial aftertaste. These are DO-Nuts the way they are meant to be. Holt's brings back memories for me as kid, stopping at a Bess Eaton donut shop in Connecticut after doing my paper route -- Absolute Heaven! I have tried just about every one of Holt's offerings and haven't found a dud yet. The jelly filled donuts are wonderful. The fruit fillings actually taste like fruit, not some sad imitation mixed up in a lab somewhere outside of Newark! I have been pretty much a raised donut kinda guy most of my life. Cake donuts are usually dry and turn gummy in your mouth. I think that's why a lot of folks dunk them in their coffee prior to taking a bite. If someone brought in donuts to work and all they had was cake donuts, I'd usually pass. My first experience with Holt's donuts was that very scenario. A co-worker offered me one from a box he'd brought in and all there were were cake donuts. I expressed my distaste, but he urged me to try one. And I did. It was closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had. Holt's cake donuts are THAT GOOD! They're not dry or gummy, but light and simply delicious! Holt's has made me a cake donut convert. I still love my raised donuts though, and Holt's are as equally heaven sent as their cake counterparts. My two go-to items are the chocolate-frosted raised rounds and the butter-crunch cake donuts. Top that combo off with a cup of their very reasonably priced coffee and I'm good to go. A note to coffee aficionados: So far as their coffee is concerned, it is pretty basic, but usually very good and somewhat on the mellow side -- not too strong, not too weak. If you are into coffee confections whipped up by a condescending barista, look elsewhere...but then you'd be missing out on what in my experience, are the best donuts in Kansas City, if not the country. You can get a decent latte just about anywhere, but donuts of this caliber are far and few between. The staff are quite friendly and very down to earth. Honestly, walking in and seeing them can be a high point of my day. Great folks and I love being one of their customers. And I will continue to be one...regardless of what my endocrinologist says! Seriously, this is Grandview's best secret! These donuts are the best I've ever had in my 22 years living in NYC, 6 years in Honolulu, and 5 years in Kansas City. I once hailed the Donut Lounge in Westport as being the best in the KC area, but that would not be the case had I known about this place sooner! Apparently, this tiny family-owned shop has been around for over 40 years, which is evident when you walk in and see their vintage register.
