I am giving 2 stars as a courtesy to what fluffy fresh USED to be. I have always been a big champion of their cinnamon twist and their apple cinnamon donuts. Once the original owner passed the business has slowly become a big disappointment. I live an hour round trip away from fluffy fresh as have always been more than happy to make the trip to get their cinnamon twist and apple cinnamon donuts however as the quality, service and overall experience has declined it is hard to remain silent. I understand that food service has small margins as I am in the business. That being said you simply cannot run a business where you run out of your most popular items before 9 am. After this many years of business you should know exactly how many items to make based upon years of service. With increasing cost everyone expects to pay a little more for products but $25-30 for a dozen of glazed donuts is not sustainable. I beg fluffy fresh to get their business back on track because they have worked hard to build a reputation for amazing products but to be out of cinnamon twist and other products before 9am on a Saturday is inexcusable. Pricing is very high but would still pay if they actually had the products available. I will give them one more shot but won't continue to drive a hour for overpriced poorly under stocked donuts. read more

Doughnut Diary Entry 1: Fluffy Fresh 1:45pm The doughnut gods were looking down on me when one day after visiting the eyeglasses store Fluffy Fresh still had a glowing sign suggesting doughnuts still in the cases. So, of course, I couldn't resist a midday sugar rush. Once inside I was met with a meager selection of sugary confections. But, I was able to decide on a classic maple iced variety with crushed peanuts atop. There was a "special" neon orange doughnut labeled "orange" that I did not trust, all in all I was happy with my safe doughnut flavor. It was nothing too fancy but it was cheap and met the criteria for a doughnut. I would visit this Fluffy Fresh location again just earlier in the day preferably. read more

I got there 20 minutes after they "opened". The trash can inside was still in front of the door acting like a barricade. All The Chairs were still upside down on the tables. This is definitely your standard typical breakfast donut shop. The original was fluffy, moist and had a nice even thin glaze coating and the flavor was amazing. Can't say the same for the chocolate long john. Not sure if it's supposed to be fried/baked as thin as is was but there wasn't much to it. The icing was good but the donut itself was too thin to be compared to any other long john I've had, even grocery store donuts are better than this. It was fairly dry and it you got a bite on the end without any icing, you were just wasting calories. The coconut donut had a nice flavor, have I had better? Yes! Have I had worse? Sadly...yes! The creme filled donut was pretty amazing but goodness, the filling was overwhelming compared to the rest of the donut. Taste buds were ambushed after taking a bite from the center. This is definitely a donut that needs to be eaten evenly from around the edges, making sure you got enough of the donut and chocolate icing in order to maintain balance of flavors. They did a nice job on it, just needed a little less filling, in my opinion. Service was adequate. The employee was clearly the only one in there and probably tired by the time we walked in around 9am, as she seemed annoyed by my asking what flavor the orange glazed donut was as she mustered a politely agitated response of, "orange". For the price, their are definitely better donuts around and the inside of the shop seemed pretty boring. I'm glad we took these donuts home to eat, as I wasn't into being inside any longer to get my order and bounce on out. My girl says the Johnson Drive location was better when she went but honestly I was so put off that I couldn't care any less than I do now to visit them again. I tried them in my quest to find some of the best and most unique donut shops in the Kansas City area when I was writing an article. I did my research and planned accordingly - I got up at 5 AM to get in around opening time just to make sure I could a variety of donuts. I got in so early they were still making donuts (talk about fresh!). I opted for a dozen and just picked donuts at random. I'm a fan of cake donuts and old fashioned. One of my favorites was a cake donut with white frosting and chocolate chips. SO good and fresh. We also tried some of the chocolate cake, glazed, powdered sugar, maple frosted, and chocolate frosted. I would definitely go back for more! read more

Don't knock it till you try it! The interior is a little worse-for-wear. Okay -- maybe the interior could be a little more appealing. The display for the donuts could also use a little makeover as the whole establishment gave the vibe of some hole-in-the-wall donut shop that made us question the freshness of these "fluffy fresh" donuts. That being said, though, these donuts were really good! For cake donuts, you can tell that these aren't old. They provide a lot of toppings on them and are not overly sweet so they satisfy your cravings for donuts instantly! There was not a huge supply of donuts by 2pm, so I would suggest stopping by earlier for even fresher "fluffy fresh" donuts. Absolutely horrible experience from start to finish. I came in super early (6:00 am) and there was a mediocre selection of donuts. The worker was NOT pleased to see me or the two other people who came in to buy food. She didn't greet any of us and just stared like she couldn't figure out why we were there. The guy in front of me bought one very large donut that looked sort of like a bear claw. The worker handed it to him directly with the wax and didn't even offer him a bag. There was no way that guy could drive and eat/hold that thing easily. When it came time for me to order, the worker kept sniffing snot and I had to reminder her to use a wax sheet to pick up my donut as she first attempted to reach for one with bare hands. I had a long john that was abnormally long and thin and fried until it was hard. I threw it away after one bite. I also purchased a cake donut (maple icing with coconut flakes) and it was so dry and crusty it was more like eating a bagel than a donut. Poor service, poor selection, and poor food quality mean this won't be a return visit for me. This location has a lot of traffic by it in the mornings, so I'm hoping they can work the issues out sooner rather than later. read more

I'll never forget the day it happened: a colleague at work brought a box of a dozen assorted donuts in to work. Plain white box. Simple stamp on top: Fluffy Fresh Donuts. What Fluffy Fresh leaves out in gimmicks, bells and whistles for the packaging, they MORE than make up for in the product. Here it comes: THESE ARE THE BEST DONUTS IN KANSAS CITY. I knew it immediately that day. I had two cake donuts - one Old Fashioned and one Applesauce - but wanted 43 more. Maybe more than 43 more. Please don't take this to mean that I don't care for Lamar's, John's Space Age, or any other honest holy-pastry-making shop in town, because those are good (sometimes great), too. But, they're not Fluffy Fresh. And you can trust me - this is coming from a donut guy. Tip: the cake donuts are REALLY where it's at, and you cannot go wrong. They are dense, soft, sugary-intense flavor explosions of fantasticness on every bite. They do not require chewing; they somehow just melt down in your mouth. The rest of the case is good as well, really, but I'm willing to put any of their cake donuts up against anything from anywhere, Land of Oz or otherwise. Goodness, I hope I'm reviewing the right place. The sign just says "DONUTS" in huge red letters. I didn't get a reciept, but the address and location seem to be about right. Anywho... I've driven past here so many times and I wanted to try their donuts, but they are always closed. Today, (Sunday at around 1:30pm) I saw the neon "OPEN" sign. I recklessly cut across traffic to gain knowledge of this place. It's between Popeye's Chicken and Mr. Goodcents in the Stateline Shopping Center. The place is kinda dark and looks like it is about to close down... maybe they were about to...I dunno. Prabably. I didn't see a sign for their hours or a sign for their name. Sorta weird. What I did see was a sign that said "NEW" (I like caps and quotes, leave me alone). Key Lime Donuts. They had some other choices, but I fixated on the jelly. I was really nervous because I told the guy (who came from the back as soon as I walked in... just for me, I was the only one there) that I needed a minute and he assumed his position at the register. I prefer to have at least one other customer there to deflect the pressure away from me. I had lot of questions...mainly about the hours, but I freaked out and didn't ask any. Ordered a Raspberry Jelly and Key Lime. $3.24 was the total. No credit/debit cards...just cash and check. Luckily, I had my milk bottle deposit money. The raspberry jelly was not lamenated with glaze... just a nice basting (don't judge my word selection). It was soft and dentable, not glass like and fracturable. The Key Lime was powdered sugar coated and very soft. The filling was bountiful. I usually have to ration it because it is just enough to fill the center with most jellies... but not this one... it was overflowing with sugared goo... They were both delicious and really did taste fresh. I will return if they are ever open again. read more

It's apparently not related to the "real" Fluffy Fresh up further north, but apparently there was some connection in the distant past. That being said, the glazed donuts are very similar. I don't generally like glazed donuts, but this is that rare exception. The inside is soft and doughy and the outside is somehow flaky and dry, not soggy and syrupy. The winner for me though, are the apple cake donuts. You have to try them. The only downside is that the service is hit or miss and the inventory can be spotty at times, so show up early. Fluffy Fresh is a tiny, (donut) hole in the wall joint crammed inside a strip mall on State Line. They have not redecorated or changed their interior since their grand opening on November 3, 1638. They are cash-only, which helps bring them to the modern age (up until last year they refused to accept anything besides gold doubloons). Fluffy Fresh has, by far, the best glazed donuts in the KC area. Much better than Lamar's, both old-school Lamar's and their newer ones. They don't offer a real huge selection; you basically choose either "glazed" or "that other one." Expect to carry out your order, since there are only eight barstools inside, and half of those are perpetually occupied by a group of retired war veterans who the government now pays to sit in donut stores. read more

Fluffy Fresh is in a decrepit strip mall on the KCMO side of 101st & Stateline... Zero ambience, cash only... But the donuts are really great... I fly colleagues into KC from around the country for week long meetings once a quarter and they always request Fluffy Fresh... I try to slip in some Krispy Kreme's or Lamar's and half of the donuts go untouched... I bring in Fluffy Fresh and not a crumb is left in the box.... Go early and bring cash, the donuts go fast and they close up shop when they run out... Lucky for me, Fluffy Fresh is just a few blocks from my house so I can swing by at 0700AM on my way to work and still have plenty of choices available... The Star of the Fluffy Fresh show is the Glazed Donut... Just a bit crispy with a sweet glaze.... Wow... I've witnessed normally reserved Fortune 100 executives resort to toe to toe fistacuffs to get the last one out of the box... All the other donuts are good too... They have the typical selection: cake donuts with pink icing, bear claws, etc.... I've never heard any complaints about any of them but the Glazed is the reason to buy your donuts from Fluffy Fresh.... read more

This place is pretty close to where I currently work and so one morning I showed up earlier than normal because of quick traffic. I kept hearing that the donuts were incredibly good, so I made a quick decision to get one before I had to go over to work. I walked in and I didn't see anyone around so I looked at the selections and made up my mind on the apple fritter. Found out that they only accepted cash or check, luckily I had my checkbook. This donut was out of this world, so incredibly good, I refer this place to anyone that likes breakfast or more importantly donuts. As for cake donuts the only place I've found so far in Kansas City with great ones is Joes Downtown Donuts as they are moist and have amazing flavor. As for regular glazed donuts they were average. I've yet to find any glazed donut that remotely compared to Johns space age donuts in Overland Park. They remain the best in the city and the best I've ever had anywhere. Stopped by for a quick sweet bite as I was in a rush but didn't want the typical McDonald's fastfood stuff. I also like to patronize locals and I wasn't disappointed! Walked in after 9am and there were still a few yummy fluffy goodness to choose from. The place is somewhat old fashion, reminds me of doughnut shops from when I was a kid. Really friendly lady help me decide between their humongous fried cinnamon roll or long cinnamon twist. I chose the roll because she said it was a not too sweet, softer bite than the twist though they both are fluffy and soft. It was soooo good, like a soft pillow of sweet cinnamony(not a word, but I made it one just now lol) dough cloud melted in my mouth. Just what I was looking for. A little short on the sweet end though it still hit the spot for me. She recommended the twist for sweeter, more Krispy Kreme style but I didn't want to run the risk of being overloaded by too sweet doughnut. Glad I stuck with the roll. Price was average for a doughnut shop, about $2 for the cinnamon roll or twist. They even have a self-serve microwave for us who like our dough slightly warmed. Fluffy Fresh is a small donut shop on State line Road, this donut shop is truly a diamond in the rough in Kansas City. They have the best donuts, and the they are made fresh and made with a friendly smile. There is not a lot of seating options inside, so it is usually best to order on the go. Some people think donuts are donuts, but at Fluffy Fresh they have a special ingredient. The chocolate covered, glazed long johns are not filled with pudding, but rather with cake icing- it is the Red Bull of donuts. At first it may seem like a lot of sugar in one place (and it is) but you will not be disappointed. I recommend washing this delicious breakfast sugar rocket down with a pair of small chocolate milk cartons. If this breakfast of champions doesn't have you revved up and ready to take on the world (for at least an house before you have a sugar crash) then I don't know what will. read more
