A cemetery in Brooklyn…read more The front entry is a bit tight for two cars, but they don't open up other exits for the most part, so getting in and out can be crowded. They have a lack of exit signs, and when they are there, some are confusing, I saw one driver take the same route twice around the same area and finally he stopped for directions. Plots are maintained okay, but you can tell they freshly mow whenever someone is going to be in an area. The areas where they don't have guests look much wilder. There are quite a few mausoleums here and a tall monument to the Jewish soldiers who died in conflicts across history.

I came to Mt. Hebron when I was just starting to visit historic cemeteries decades ago. Founded in…read more1903, it's considered the Jewish section of Cedar Grove Cemetery, but my memory is that Mt Hebron was much larger, much more impressive visually and with a serene, stately aura about it. I came in the days before Find a Grave. I was motivated by an old copy of Life magazine I had bought, from March 1944. They had a photo inside of the burial of labor racketeer Louis "Lepke" Buchalter, who had been executed at Sing Sing. Mourners are clustered about the gravesite, but in the background, I could see the remnants of the 1939 World's Fair. With a friend, I drove and navigated my way through Queens (not my favorite borough), and, arriving at the cemetery and using the magazine as a guide, eventually found Lepke's final resting place. We took our photos and explored the rest of the cemetery. Lepke was a fascinating figure. From a poor but respectable family, Lepke chose crime as his life's profession and, paraphrasing the words of historian Albert Fried, rebelled against authority at the same time he embraced it. He ran the infamous Murder Inc. with Mafia boss Albert Anastasia and was responsible for much savagery and many murders. (An interesting book is "Pacifist" by Donald Wetzel. During World War II, Wetzel was a conscientious objector and for a time was jailed with Lepke in NYC. Although a gentile, Lepke thought Wetzel was a Jew and began to act almost as a surrogate father to him. Often, Lepke castigated him for his pacifism. Wetzel would later write, "Finally, my patience gone, I interrupted, 'What kind of a Jew am I? No, Louis, you know what kind of Jew I am. What kind of a godd**n Jew are you?' He jerked his head back, his eyes brightened with surprise, and then, remarkably, he smiled. Far from outraging him, something about my angry challenge strangely pleased him. That I'd had the guts for it perhaps." When Wetzel is transferred upstate, "I reached for and found Lepke's outstretched hand, seeing, with absolute disbelief, his face contorted like a child's, Lepke crying, his voice a hoarse whisper, his last word to me, 'Shalom.'") In driving around the cemetery, we saw a mausoleum with the name "Streisand" on it. Barbra's relatives? I assume so. Since Find a Grave, I realize that among the honorable citizens buried here are notable actors, musicians, photojournalists, politicians. Also, other notorious criminals I was chagrined to learn I had overlooked. Martin "Bugsy" Goldstein, a Murder Inc. killer also executed at Sing Sing; Emanuel "Mendy" Weiss, a Murder Inc. killer who was part of the death squad that dispatched Dutch Schultz in Newark in 1935 and also died in Sing Sing's electric chair; Irving Wexler aka Waxey Gordon, a Prohibition kingpin; and Abe Landau, a Dutch Schultz bodyguard who was shot down with his boss. To Mt. Hebron's credit, they don't shy away from that unsavory history. If you visit their cutting-edge website, they offer walking tours such as the Murder Inc. mob tour, the Composer's Encore Tour, the Holocaust Memorial Tour, and the Yiddish Walk of Fame Tour. A beautiful cemetery rich in NYC's history and tradition, it comes highly recommended. I just wish Queens was an easier borough to get to and navigate. It has some of the best, most historic and beautiful cemeteries in NY.

The office closes at 3:45p.m. I caught up with her as she eas leaving and she guided me to the site that I wanted to go, an. Ordeal not easy to find. In the office she is the one to ask for. ( to business personnel- give the girl a raise - she's a keeper) She assistingly can give printed maps help set up the website where you can add name to gps walking . It is a difficult cemetery to drive through. ( see my previous review) ( see pix) . There are restrooms near office. If you need to park , go to the parking area on the left. The one on the right could get you towed. There is a yellow painted strip before the restroom. Where you can temporarily park /wait in car. Flowers not often available laced in this cemetery in leu of rocks. Flower vases are regularly taken out due to water collecting and mosquitoes. Red circles on grave stones are for seasonal care. Gold emblems are for Eternal care. Should delay from scheduled funeral service overlap another crew of workers is there for follow up at other location. Crews wait at site according to scheduled hour. Perhaps this is more than you need to know , as the driving directions and office info are the most important to getting to and around the cemetery.

A small triangular land when it was forbidden to bury Jewish within city limits prior to the expansion of the city and prior to progress. Stop by briefly for a viewing while you wait for a table nearby French Roast to see remnants of the past still standing through time. Time marches on as well as progress of mankind but of course remnants of past events still lingers pain and anguish which as individuals we evolve to closure and the journey of healing. "Established in 1805, the cemetery was cut significantly in size when the expanding city built 11th Street on the city grid as a part of the Commissioners' Plan of 1811. This historic Manhattan cemetery belong to Congregation Shearith Israel, a Spanish and Portuguese synagogue in Manhattan and the oldest Jewish congregation in North America, established in 1654. They are perhaps the most durable legacy of New York City's long ago Jewish past. Twenty headstones from the original second cemetery are still standing on 11th Street." She gave me the information and said when I did come to visit they would give me a map and show me how to get there. I asked if I could ask for her when I do go, she said yes and that her name is Olga. A couple of weeks later I did visit the cemetery and found Olga working in the office. She remembered our conversation and gave me a map with the directions, she was very kind and offered her condolences for my loss. I was actually thinking I would be given the information and be on my own. However it was totally opposite, she was very helpful, knowledgeable, and her voice and tone was that of an Angel. She made what was for me a very difficult situation totally manageable. Thank you Olga for all your help, you're a very special person.

Located in the Woodside section of Queens, established in 1848, I was only here a few times years…read moreago, but it has always remained a vivid memory. It covers 365 acres and is divided into 4 separate sections. In some significant ways, it's a quintessential urban cemetery- a sprawling, densely-packed, but historic necropolis imbued with an eerie beauty. If a city's history is contained in its cemeteries, NYC's history is very much contained here. I searched out the monument of pioneering hero policeman Joe Petrosino, the police officer who fought organized crime in the early 20th century and was killed in Sicily in 1909 while on a fact-finding mission. In another part of the cemetery is the massive mausoleum dedicated to his antithesis in every way-- Joe the Boss Masseria, who was killed in 1931 in a hit set up by Lucky Luciano (I recommend the book "The First Family" by Mike Dash, an exhaustively researched, fascinating history of NYC's Mafia that covers the careers of Petrosino, Masseria, and others). I also have to confess I sought this cemetery out because of my love for the film "The Godfather" (which is a mythology of the Mafia in much the same way "Gone With the Wind" was a mythology of the antebellum South, but in spite of that, "The Godfather" remains one of America's greatest films). It was here that Don Corleone's burial scene was filmed. I found the exact location where it took place. At the job I had at the time, I became friends with an older Orthodox Jew who had been best friends with actor Richard Castellano (Clemenza) and he recounted for me that Castellano and others of the cast, including Richard Conte, had been sneaking nips from a flask that Castellano was carrying on that very cold day; they had snuck down between the mausoleums to "micturate" when nature inevitably called. When I found the site, I halfway expected to find a stone with the words CORLEONE chiseled on it (I didn't). (A nice side story-- when I was a kid and became angry at my adoptive parents, who were in actuality warm, loving people, I sometimes, in my youthful stupidity, fantasized about being adopted into the Corleone family like Tom Hagen, the Irish-German orphan. When I recently told that to my oldest, best friend...we grew up together obsessed by the movie...he said, "Don't worry; you're MY Irish consiglieri!") A lot of famout people are buried here, including Tony Bennett, Dom De Luise, Una O'Connor (not so "famous," but she was the screaming crone in "Invisible Man" and several other old-time Universal horror movies), Tony Sirico (The Sopranos), Governor Alfred Smith, Mayor Robert Wagner, Texas Guinan (the speakeasy manager during Prohibition who "welcomed" her guests by shouting, "Hello, suckers!"), and others. There are also the thousands of graves belonging to honest, hard-working citizens whose efforts helped to transform NYC into the booming metropolis that it became, and still is. For Catholics, Calvary is a sacred place of reverence, mourning and remembering those who have traveled the path we'll all follow someday. For respectful visitors without personal connections to Calvary (like me), it's a rich and fascinating trip through history, and it also offers some glorious and magnificent views of the NYC skyline (especially of interest to the photographer, or...perhaps...the painter).

A close family friend recently passed away and McLaughlin & sons handled the transport to St Patrick's church and also to St Charles Cemetery ( there was no wake) The gentleman who served as Pall Bearers were just wonderful in every aspect. They took part in the Mass at both locations, and were also very gracious, kind, respectful, professional and, yes, personable. The staff at this funeral home really were helpful to my friends family during a very stressful time. So i felt the need to show a little Yelp recognition to a long time running Brooklyn establishment.

I called numerous cemeteries, and many were abrupt in telling me that they did not have this specific person buried at their facility. I called Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn and they spent ample time trying to help me. After a relatively lengthy conversation, the manager took the call asked me a few questions and stated that someone would get back to me. Truthfully, I wasn't expecting a call back so soon let alone at all. Within about an hour I received a call back with the news I was hoping for, my loved one was buried in their cemetery. They provided me with the area she was in, date of burial, and the correct spelling of her name. They couldn't find it at first because I didn't have correct spelling. I explained I was out of state and they offered to mail me a map so that I could have it for the trip I am planning at the end of the summer. They really took their time to help me and were very kind and pleasant to deal with. I even mentioned that when I visit I would stop by the office to thank them personally and they said they look forward in meeting me. I didn't expect such service from a cemetery; I was very pleased.
