    Fermented Kimchi Caesar
    Ron O.

We love HOME Soquel, and were excited to try their new sister eatery across the street in the former Vino Cruz location. Peruse the daily menu scroll on the wall and place your order at the counter. You get an order number tent and they'll bring your order to your table. Grab your own cutlery and self serve filtered water. Today we tried... * Fermented Kimchi Caesar Salad with breadcrumbs -- This was good, and the fermented Kimchi does provide a nice umami touch to the dressing without the use of anchovies. Would have preferred crisper romaine lettuce instead of butter lettuce. * Vegetarian Frittata -- Egg omelet with asparagus, kale, fennel and cheese served piping hot in a skillet. I really liked this one. * Chicken noodle soup -- Chicken, fregola (Pearl) pasta, bacon and a touch of Parmesan. Very yummy and really hit the spot for me as I recover from a bout of the flu. * Paper wrapped Black Cod with Miso Chili Butter -- This was good, dish was fresh and tasty, but I didn't get much of the miso chili butter flavor which might have been overwhelmed by the capers. The food was reminiscent of a fine French Mediterranean Cafe -- it was a welcome change from the usual lunch/brunch options around Santa Cruz. Maybe they can spruce up the outdoor seating area a bit to have the ambiance match the food. They have a nice selection of beer and wine. Would also love it if they could post their daily menu on a website or in their Instagram feed. Since the menu changes frequently, it would certainly help us decide which days are best to drop in.

My first experience here was the other night. I didn't know what to expect but figured it might have a similar vibe to VinoCruz. It was a little different. While I can understand the choice to not have a wait staff, I do think they're missing an opportunity. Ordering wine/beverages at a counter in front of the bathrooms, while a line forms out the door was a little off-putting and honestly, kind of awkward. Working with a paper menu on the wall versus individual menus was also a curious choice. I get the desire to be casual (like Beer Thirty) and it's missing the mark a bit. That said, all of the staff were friendly and the two items of food we ordered were very tasty. Both glasses of wine were lovely too. I'd encourage you to check it out yourself and see if it works for you. I'm optimistic it will get better with more time given how lovely their main restaurant is.

I went to Home restaurant first but they were fully booked and they recommended this sister restaurant Home Away to me across the street. Home Away just opened after months and months of delays in late 2025. Pros: + food was fresh and delicious, and a few items are from their sister restaurant Home + cute farm to table vibe with rotating menu written on butcher paper + three parking spots in front of the restaurant + wonderful cashier who was very knowledgeable about the menu and great with recommendations + food came out quickly Cons: - the party ahead of us spent about 10 minutes discussing with the cashier the menu before deciding what to eat. For a casual restaurant, you just don't expect to wait that long to put your order in... - food portion feels small for the price - I was particularly surprised at how small the cod was. Perhaps when their dish washer is fixed and these are presented on nicer plates it will feel more substantive - sign near the front informs you it's self service for water and bussing dishes, but there isn't good signage on where to bus dishes. There was another party who didn't bus their own plates and left, so I think a lot of customers probably don't pay read the signs - tipping guidelines feel ambiguous when customers wait in line to order, order and pay at the counter, self serve water and utensils, and bus dishes. The staff did cashier and provide recommendations, cook, and bring food to our table. I'd prefer if gratuity was built into the price

Cute little outdoor spots if you wanna be outside, quaint indoor tables available as well as sitting at the bar to be part of the scene.

What went well? Every single thing. Really great mellow vibe, quaint really personal spot. Home was full, but this is a walk in and order at the counter, find your spot & be delighted over and over. The Caesar salad was delicious, we finished and I immediately wanted more. Then my friend said " maybe we should get another".. we had lots of food coming though, so we held back. I'm going to try and make aioli right now because I'm one of those people that believes they can do anything, but no need to worry, when I fail I'll be back for the chicken & aioli here. The cheese plate was perfect as well. Great oysters, really tasty shepards pie. We will return, it's a sweet spot and has a neighborhood feel, even on the corner of Soquel. Oh oh oh, I almost forgot, the pate! Don't miss it. I got to meet up and catch up with friends over delicious food and wine with the nicest friendliest service & owners. Make sure you come and spend some time here. It's worth it.

Finally open after months of anticipation! We stopped in during the opening weekend. You never know what you'll get when a place first opens but they've got things pretty dialed. It is a counter order spot with menus for food and wine in a couple spots near the counter. We chose the rock cod aguachile, charcuterie board, and beef empanada. Everything was so fresh and tasted great. It paired well with the canned red wine from birichino and a GSM from Windy Oaks. The service was super friendly. Can't wait to see what else this place does!

(I have, no joke, walked by it dozens of times without realizing it!) I found it from seeing it on a list of restaurant participants for Burger Week. Overall, I give Pete's 3.5 stars, and here's why... **Ambiance: 5 stars** With the bright and tastefully-decorated dining room along with the multiple windows overlooking the spectacular beach, you really can't beat this ambiance! Pete's has the fine-dining vibe that's perfect for that first date, anniversary or other special dining occasion when you want some quiet and mood lighting. **Service: 4 stars** We were seated right away, even without reservations. It was a Sunday, and there was no wait or crowd. Service was quick and friendly. Mid-dinner, a server broke some glassware right behind my seat and needed us to move so they could sweep under our table and feet. They ended up moving us to a better table (next to the window) instead of having us stand there to watch them sweep. Accidents happen, and I felt they handled that well. **Food: 3 stars** Every item we ordered was delicious and fresh, and all arrived quickly. However, the menu was fairly compact, and the amount of food is even more compact. I was excited Pete's had lobster rolls (one of my all-time favorite food items EVER; $28) on their menu, so I didn't hesitate to order that along with a lychee martini. My partner ordered the bolognese ($30) and an old fashioned. We ordered the polenta as an appetizer. All of it was tasty, but oh-so-small. The cheddar polenta was like a taste test size (maybe 4 TBs), and the lobster roll was the smallest I had ever seen in my life. I didn't want to be rude, but I wanted to laugh when it arrived at our table! The lobster roll was smaller than my hand. It looked like circus food with all super tiny sizes. **Price/Value: 2 stars** You don't come to Pete's for the value because the portions are.... micro. TIP: If you have a big appetite or skipped a meal that day, I suggest going elsewhere or be ready to turn over a paycheck because you'll need to order a lot to fill up. It is worth it, however, if you fancy a light-filled room with views of the sparkling ocean and sounds of the waves crashing on the golden sands of Capitola!

I had the spicy Devil's Ginger vodka martini with the calamari appetizer and with dinner, the Lava Top Sauvignon Blanc ($13), a perfect complement to the swordfish. My swordfish was perfectly sautéed in a tapenade beurre blanc sauce ($40) with deliciously creamy and decadent polenta and buttery chopped bok choy. The way they served the bok choy was perfect- never change it. It was artsy, buttery and didn't look wilted. My son had the grilled boneless pork chops (two boneless chops) with fries and smoky beans ($28), loved. He devoured the berry fruit crisp à la mode for dessert ($12) and I had two small bites: It was like granola over compote with ice cream. I didn't complain. The best part was the incredibly flawless service. We could have felt rushed dining since it was towards the end of service. Instead, Genevieve paced the meal perfectly so we felt spoiled and unrushed. Next visit I would love to dine in their "secret garden" courtyard; it was beautiful. Their 'secret garden' would be beautiful for a private party like a birthday or wedding anniversary, bridal or baby shower.

Food was good , not great we started with the a poke appetizer. It was supposed to a spicy poke but it lacked any heat. The seaweed salad was great, along with all the other toppings. I had the loco moco burrito, along with my youngest son. It was great. Rice, Mac salad, egg, and burger had it going on. The brown gravy was great as well. Served on the side so you can dip the burrito in it. My oldest son had the teriyaki bowl, and downed that sucker in 5 minutes. So, I take he loved it. My wife had the beef short ribs and were spot on. The Mac salad was a little dry. Taste was off as well. Not sure if it was missing some salt, but it was ok. Beer selection was great local brews and a full bar was great. Had the pina colada and it was tasty The place overall was terrific. Fantastic patio, great decorations, and was able to watch some baseball. Music was a little off. Was hoping for some island vibe music like John Cruz, but got the Beatles, and some 80's songs.
