I'm pissed off and I need to warn other families about Home Instead Seattle. They completely screwed up caring for my mother who has dementia, and I'm done being polite about it. They kept sending different people every day. My mom has dementia - she needs routine and familiar faces, not a parade of strangers confusing her even more. This made her anxious and upset constantly, but apparently Home Instead doesn't give a shit about what patients actually need. Half these caregivers had zero experience and some didn't even have the required licenses to care for my mom. Are you kidding me? I'm paying you to send qualified people, not random folks off the street who don't know what they're doing. This is my mother's safety we're talking about. I called management multiple times trying to fix this mess. Talked to some woman named Needy who gave me the most fake, corporate apologies I've ever heard. No solutions, no changes, just "sorry you feel that way" bullshit while nothing got better. This company took our money and provided garbage care that made my mom's life worse. They don't care about your loved one - they just want to cash your checks and send whoever's available that day. Don't waste your time or money with Home Instead Seattle. Find a company that actually knows how to care for people with dementia instead of this amateur hour operation. read more

I used Home Instead after my husband suffered a debilitating stroke. All of the caregivers that helped my husband and I for the 5 years until his death were compassionate and well trained. The office staff was supportive and knowledgeable. Of note for his follow through and expertise was Kevin Ledgerwood who helped us all through the entire process. The services of Home Instead allowed my husband to remain at home and be a part of family traditions. I always had peace of mind that he was well care for if I needed to leave home. Home Instead helped my mother regain her ability to live independently and they provided excellent and professional care during a difficult time. I called them late one night to leave a message after learning my mother was being discharged from a rehab facility to a nursing home because she wasn't progressing with walking or eating. I knew in my heart that my mother would be happier and would make progress if she could return to her own home but she would need 24-7 caregiving for a while. To my surprise, Kevin Ledgerwood answered the phone that night and met me the next day at my mother's home. Then, he went to the rehab facility to meet my mother and speak with the staff and assure them that Home Instead would provide caregiving immediately. Shelby Coffee carefully arranged caregiving schedules so there was no gap in coverage and she updated me often about my mother's condition and she made home visits multiple times a week. The caregivers went above and beyond, encouraging my mother to walk and eat and, under their kind and patient care, my mother regained strength and happiness. I am soooo frustrated with my experience with this company. I hired them to provide companionship care for my mom who is 85-years-old. I did this because my brother and I cannot be there all the time, and she is lonely and just lost her husband in February. (In the last two years we have had three deaths in the family including my son and my sister. We are all working very hard to manage life and grief.) I was excited at first based on my initial conversation and meeting that included a staff member and my mom. We had a plan for a caregiver to come the first time who my mom really liked. The next week, I was called and told that caregiver wasn't available anymore, so they were sending someone new. This was the day before she was supposed to come. This meant I needed to be available when that new person showed up, so my mom wouldn't be confused. That person was not going to be a regular, so the following week, I had to go again to meet with a new person. He seemed great, and my mom really liked him. After just two weeks with him, they called and said due to staffing shortages, they are requiring a 12 hour a week minimum for any clients. Given that this isn't a covered service (and is $43 an hour) that is financially unavailable to us, so we can no longer afford to use their services even though they had us sign a contract for the time we were doing each week. I was told we could have a two week grace period before they pulled their services. Though I was mad, I said yes to that so I could prepare my mom for another change. This morning, the first of the two week grace period, I was called and told that someone called in sick (not even sure that was our assigned care giver) and they had no one to cover. I got this message after texting my mom back to answer her question about when her care giver was coming today. Inconsistent and uncaring. I got lots of, 'oh, I am sorry' comments on the phone, but this kind of drama is not good for an elderly, early stage dementia patient who is struggling with loneliness. Dependable care? NO. Putting the patient / client needs first? NO. I also had huge challenges trying to get someone on the phone to discuss a billing issue (I left 4 vmails and spoke to two people who were going to get me to the right person...) I would absolutely NOT recommend them to anyone who needs care for someone they love. read more

Hired Home Instead for a medical transport. They were supposed to pick my father up, take him to his MD appointment, take notes on what the doctor said, and return him home. I gave clear instructions when I booked the appt., that it was a round trip deal. I gave them the address of his assisted living community and the address of the clinic. I even called the day before to ensure that all the details were in order. Still... the day of, they never showed. My father waited at the curb of his home for 20 min beyond when they were supposed to arrive, without even receiving a phone call to inform him they were running late. He had no idea what to do so he canceled the doctor's appointment - rather than be a "no show". As the point of contact, I never received a call from Home Instead either. I only received a call from my father informing me that he was still at home and had already canceled his appointment. Of course I immediately called the company, and they told me the transport had gone straight to the doctor's office. read more

I used Home Instead for two months to help an aging parent recover from a serious fracture. HI was very helpful to provide reliable support and in matching my mom's needs with the skills of the available caregivers. Support was organized in 48 hours or so. The caregivers skills ranged from average (a few) to truly outstanding (many). Some caregivers speak foreign languages, so ask in advance if that is needed. Services included helping with showers and cooking meals, but the best caregivers also took mom on city trips and museum visits (which was beyond what they were supposed to offer) The service does not come cheap, so check if your insurance covers it, but surely worth it if you can afford it and if a stay and a nursing facility is not an option. All caregivers are vetted, reliable and show up on time every time. Overall the support from HI was crucial to ensure my moms' recovery. read more

I was able to work around school, childcare and other jobs, and earn a competitive wage. I have always felt supported when I am out in the field. The office staff is very warm and receptive, and the staffing team works hard to make a good match between caregiver and client. We hired Home Instead Senior Care to care for my grandmother when she could no longer navigate the stairs in her home. She needed assistance doing laundry, cleaning house and with errands. She found her caregivers to be trustworthy, kind and hard workers. Our family had peace of mind knowing we could rely on Home Instead caregivers to be there 'just in case.' My grandma is very social, so having the caregivers there made her more chipper, too! We could not be happier! read more

We hired Home Instead at great expense for 24 hour care for my mother while she was in the last weeks of her life. The night caregiver failed to assist my mother when she tried to get out of bed to use the bathroom and my mother fell, sustaining a facial and head injury. The caregiver did not immediately report the incident but waited until the morning. My mother was taken to the emergency room and could not returned to her home where she wanted to live out her last days due to the negligence of the caregiver. The agency refused to acknowledge responsibility for my mother's injuries. She died in a skilled nursing facility instead of her home. The sole job of the night care giver was to keep my mother safe. She completely failed my mother and our family. read more

'Mom' was in Hospice from 3/17/15-3/23/15 when she passed away. We used Home Instead (HI) Seattle to assist in care for her for 5 evenings before she died. After she dies, we sent a nice note and were mostly happy with our experience (two of the three Home Instead caregivers were really great - the third was a warm body and was not a natural fit). For over two months now, we have requested copies of Mom's care notes and the billing statement be submitted to Mom's long term care insurance company (we provided everything needed from our end nearly 6 weeks ago). The timeline: * Six weeks after Mom's passing, we called HI to find out where this paperwork was as the insurance company said they were still waiting for it. The person at HI said the employee who handles these things was "on vacation". We asked if someone else could follow up on our request/paperwork. * We received a message two days later saying that someone at HI would follow up. * 10 days after that call, we still hadn't heard from anyone so we called again. The person at HI was very apologetic and said the person who had been on vacation was back the "next day" so we should be able to get this taken care of. We asked that she contact us as soon as she got back. * Two days later we received a voicemail from the Client Care Supervisor saying that they had forgotten to pick up the caregiver notes after Mom died. We arranged to have them picked up the next day. (They wanted to schedule an appointment since the caregiver notes were "legal documents" but that would have meant arranging our schedules to be home so we left the notes on the porch. They could not have been too concerned about these being "legal docs" as they were at our house for two months). * Five days after the notes were picked up we called again to talk to the person who had been on vacation. She informed us she'd been gone for over two weeks (18 days I believe) and "just got the paperwork" the previous week. (Can a business afford to not have someone able to process paperwork while someone is on vacation for that long?) She was neither concerned nor empathetic and when pressed as to when we could expect her to submit the appropriate paperwork to the insurance company we were told, "Sometime this week". * That same day we sent a detailed letter to the manager of the Home Instead team thinking he/she would be appalled by our experience and would apologize and explain what might have occurred. In short, we thought they may care; however, after they received our letter we received the following three messages from Home Instead (same morning) without a single apology or mention of our journey on any of them: 1. They received our letter and would process paperwork once they got the care notes (remember the ones that were left at our house for 2 months)? 2. They researched and it looks like the info was faxed to Insurance on the day before we called (again) the person who had been on vacation 3. The insurance company received info the day after we called that last time. No apology, no explanation, nothing. Interesting... the Home Instead website says, "For dependable warm-hearted care..." and the only thing we have been able to depend on is the lack of organization, follow-through and empathy. They also state, "We work with many long-term care insurance companies to bring you the covered services you need over the short or long term" but we certainly have not experienced that in our multiple communications (most of them initiated by us). We were very close to Mom and this devastating time has been made all the more difficult because of lack of follow-through from Home Instead. The fact that no one at the Home Instead office seemed to be able to put themselves in our place and just take a few minutes to copy the care notes and billing info and fax it off to the Insurance company pretty much sums up their lack of concern and professionalism. A little integrity would have gone a long way but obviously it would need to be leadership that sets the example and expectations and just as obviously, that is not the way this company operates. read more
