We have one caregiver from Home Instead/ Honor. Her name is Sharon Ly'burtus. She is amazing. My father connected with her right away. She is thoughtful and caring. She cares for my dad from 8 pm to 8 am four nights a week. She provides toileting help, dressing and undressing, and all mobility and transfer help she does it with grace and care of the details. What we like most is how much she engages with dad. Dad is 93 with advanced Parkinson's, and some heart issues. They talk about the past, sing songs together. Home Instead has been wonderful through my Dad's tenure with them. What started as 4-8 hours a day after he came out of rehab in 2016 following a UTI infection became 24x7 in 2020 with little notice after another UTI-triggered hospitalization. Sorry. Mom was end of life and we needed care. Rainbow Hospice had this company on their list. Bridget came out and was great. We were very clear about our needs and this company failed to provide someone with Hospice training. We opted for 27/7 knowing we were end of life and we were tired. The worker showed up telling Mom, "we're gonna get you better." When I told her Mom was end of life she said I was too negative. Her constant chattering with Mom not only took away from family members who wanted to spend valuable time with Mom, but also wore Mom out. I called Home Instead when another agency had let me down by not providing service the day after I was discharged from the hospital. They are awesome! I spoke with Tessa, one of the case managers. She was very reassuring and kind. Less than 2 hours of my call, she was at my home with the caregiver for the weekend. In addition, she had a plan going forward. I have been extremely impressed with the caregivers and care managers. The caregivers are very proactive, friendly and caring. My wife was hospitalized for 2 months and then went to a nursing home for a month and was still fairly weak. On a friday our insurance company told us that my wife would have to leave the nursing home on the following Wednesday. Our doctor told us my wife would need a companion to help her while I was at work. I was at a loss as to which service to use. A very good friend of ours gave me a glowing report about Home Instead he was using for his wife.. I called the Skokie office on Saturday and they set up an appointment for me on Monday. A very wonderful person Ritka came to my home and explained everything fully to me and made me feel at ease. She asked me some questions so she could get a better idea of the fit between the companion and my wife. I explaned to her what my wife wanted and told Ritka that I had the next few days off and would need a companion on the following Monday. On Wednesday my wife was released and on Thursday Ritka came back to my house and talked to my wife and also asked her some questions. Ritka was so great and friendly and she put our minds at such ease we signed the contrat knowing Ritka would find us a good match. Monday came and Shelly the companion from Home Insead walked into our house with Ritka and my wife tells me they are great friends. Shelly is very proactive and protective of my wife, my wife loves having Shelly in the house. She cooks and does light house keeping. I feel very safe and relived that Shelly is there. Ritka did such a good job of matcmaking it is unbeliveable. I would reccommend Home Instead to anyone that needs a caretaker or companion. End of life management for my mother was an education for my family, in large part because we never had to deal with it directly. My mother suffered for 12 years with Parkinson's Disease. Each stage in the disease progression brought different issues and challenges. At the beginning, and for many years during my mother's journey, my physician father, who is a saint, managed her care. As the disease progressed, he realized he needed assistance. Both my parents wanted to stay at home, so our father brought in Home Instead. Let me say that my mother was not entirely on board with having a stranger come into her house. We used Home Instead for several years and towards the end, my mother loved her caretakers and they loved her. Home Instead's role was not only caretaker, but educator, family nurturer, nurse consultant. The management always worked with my father in choosing the caretaker he felt was right for Mom. We had four women who rotated around the clock at the end and we could not have been more blessed. The women taking care of Mom were warm, nurturing, and smart. As my mother's situation worsened, Barbara guided us from how to choose an appropriate chair for Mom, to using a hospital bed. Was Mom already at that point? Yes. I have seen a very positive change in my uncle being more conversant and engaged. As I live at quite a distance away in New Jersey, Chelly does an excellent job at keeping me apprised of how things are going and about any concerns or suggestions that the caregivers may have expressed.
