Her guidance and advocacy made an overwhelming process feel manageable, and we are incredibly grateful for her help. We truly don't know what we would have done without her. My grandmother, well into her 90s, came down with pneumonia. After a harrowing ordeal with the hospital staff, who quickly counted her out, and a fight with them to approve and provide the therapies she so desperately needed, she was able to return to her home. Unfortunately she was severely weakened by the bout and couldn't care for herself. Shawn from Custom Home Care, LLC was recommended by someone in my grandmother's retirement community. He scheduled a meeting with us in my grandmother's home and assured us that his company would be able to assist us. Boy, did they deliver! Initially she as unable to walk for any length of time after returning home. She couldn't even roll herself over. After a few months of in-home care, she had regained her confidence to use her walker to move around the apartment. The caregivers were patient, adhered to the daily schedule that I provided as well as her weekly therapy schedule, and displayed skills that left me feeling confident that my grandmother would be safe while I was not there. Whenever I visited her, which was quite often, the home was clean and she looked great! Shawn maintained contact with me and/or my mother and was always responsive to our needs. We had a caregiver of theirs for over a year during which time he started asking my elderly relative for money. The staff at Custom Home Care made a mild attempt to reprimand him. In hindsight they should have let him go and we should have insisted on a new caregiver - but we were new to this and trusted CHC to deal with it appropriately. Several months later, we realized that the caregiver stole my elderly relative's credit card information and had charged over $10,000 to my relative. (The guy used it to pay his car payments, taxes, utility bills, so it was really easy to catch him.) Custom Home Care's response was that THEY had felt so cheated by their employee. They did NOTHING to apologize, repay us, or take legal action against him. All they did was offer us the names of a few other CNA's on their staff that we had already tried out and were not a good match for us. The county investigated the crime, had a stack of evidence against the CNA, and entered into legal proceedings against him, during which time it became clear that the CNA could be deported. The CNA then started calling us non-stop and showing up at our doorstep to ask us not to press charges. Finally he plead guilty, has a record, and 2000 hours of community service. We never heard from Custom Home Care again beyond the initial week when we discovered all of this. What does it matter if an agency is bonded if they are not going to come forward and be responsible for their employees financial transgressions? On top of caring for a loved one with dementia, we don't have the time or energy report CHC to the state. And I think they know this. read more

I can highly recommend this agency after dealing with several care givers - all wonderful (I'd like to mention Stephany, Edith and Resenita in particular). There is excellent communication among the team members and you never feel alone, which is huge when you are the caregiver / point person for an elderly parent. My mother recently passed away, and even though she was living in a memory care unit we felt it was important for her to have additional on-site care. Her last six months or so were made much more manageable and full with the input of this thoughtful and gentle team. Shawn is great - always returns calls and emails, and offers a lot of insight when things get challenging. Dementia is tough, and this group was up to the challenge. read more

I am POA for a dear friend of mine who lives at a continuum of care facility in Evanston. I live 40 miles from the facility and hire CHC to assist me in caring for my friend, now in the memory care unit. They have helped me for several years now and always put the client/patient first. The CHC nurse/wellness coordinator, Jennifer, and weekday companion, Zia, are true professionals and always are focused on providing the best care for my friend, who now is in late stage dementia. CHC also provides weekend companions for my friend and I am grateful to all for their fine efforts. They share positive insights, work smart to keep her safe, stimulated, and I know I can count on them to provide trusted compassionate care. I have called on them to help me with care taking my friend outside the facility (surgery, physician appointments, etc.) and they always provide excellent professional care (friend is wheel chair bound and unable to verbalize clearly at times). We even had a situation at Evanston Hospital day surgery that ended up with the hospital releasing her at 9:30 pm with a last minute recommendation for private nurse care over the next 24 hours. Her continuum of care facility could not provide such care, so I called CHC and they were able to provide a private nurse within an hour of our return to the facility. If you are looking for an agency that provides excellent, professional staff and service....Custom Home Care is my recommendation. There are many caregiving organizations out there, but CHC is five star in my experience. read more

My mother lived until recently in a senior residence serviced by Custom Home Care, Inc. As her health declined, she became increasingly dependent on their nurses, caregivers, and medication management. Several live-in caregivers came and went. One was conscientious and compassionate, though inexperienced. The others, however carefully screened, had less desirable traits; one was cavalier, two more did not speak understandable English, and still another was preoccupied with "ratting out" other caregivers. There was no evidence of abuse, but we were made aware of several instances of neglect, i.e. sleeping on the job or otherwise leaving my mother unattended for inordinately long periods of time. One nurse (who is no longer with Custom Home Care) was utterly incompetent at managing my mother's prescriptions. Our pharmacist described her as "rude and abrasive," and her failures were inexcusable. On one occasion, she placed a prescription on auto-refill but neglected to instruct the caregivers to administer it. I knew nothing of this until the day I discovered a several-month supply of unopened vials stashed on a shelf. Unfortunately the nurse who replaced her (also no longer with the company) was no better, failing to follow hospital discharge instructions right off the bat. Ultimately I moved my mother elsewhere for her own safety. Determined to do everything in my power to have Custom Home Care's license suspended, I consulted with attorneys and filed complaints with the Illinois Department of Health. The State concurred with my allegations and took corrective actions against Custom Home Care. Unfortunately for an unknown number of current and future patients who may experience similar "care," Custom Home Care is still in business. read more

I have used Custom Home Care for over 5 years for my grandmother. I have never had a concern with the caregivers, the staff, or owners. Everyone has always been more than amazing every time I have spoke with them. I really like that they have nurses on staff that the caregivers can contact when guidance is needed. I do believe that every company has a bad apple that needs to be removed every now and then. It is unfortunate that a family had to encounter the bad apple, but I cannot believe that Custom Home Care made a "mild attempt" to handle the situation. My grandmother has been in and out of the hospital numerous times and Custom always worked with us. Custom also assisted us in finding other resources such as a home health company to privide skilled nursing to my grandmother. When my family had difficulties understanding and getting through the red tape of the healthcare system, Custom was always there to help guide us in the right direction. I will never be able to thank them enough for being the light in the fog and the constant in our lives as my grandmother's condition has continued to change. Thank-you Custom Home Care!! read more
